As this season of gift-giving (and gift-receiving) nears its conclusion, we will spend some time focused on the “art of re-gifting.” It’s surprising how much has been written on the topic by etiquette experts. I’ll start off by telling you that re-gifting is considered acceptable in certain circumstances. The thing to know is that the success of re-gifting is governed by a small, but very important set of ground rules. You may find the article “The Art of Re-Gifting” very interesting. We also provide some tips for genuine “lastminute” gift shopping, as well as changes some retailers have made in their “gift return” policies. Two gift-related issues that most of us have probably had to deal with at times are last-minute gift shopping and gift returns. We’ve sourced solid information on both of those topics (see below) that should be helpful to you this year. Making Successful Gift Returns Source: cbsnews.com (excerpts) The reason we included “successful” in this section’s title – make note of it – is because this year, some retailers have tightened up their post-purchase gift return policies, specifically around the window of time you have to get the unwanted gift back to them. Returns can be costly for retailers, given the shipping and restocking costs they incur on goods that are sent back. It's led 42% of retailers surveyed by goTRG to shorten their window for returns. One in three retailers give consumers just seven days to send goods back, or tack on fees for bulky goods to discourage consumers from making returns at all. The following retailers, on the other hand, are among those with the most generous return policies in the business. Features of good return policies to look for include omni-channel returns options – for instance purchase online / return in store, free shipping and overall lengthy returns periods. American Eagle / The men's and women's clothing store company lets consumers return new and unworn items any time after purchase. There is no time limit to receive a full refund so long as you keep your receipts. Returns can be made in the store or online. Dollar General / Refunds with receipt for merchandise in the original packaging are always given within 90 days of purchase. Note there are limitations on select seasonal merchandise and opened electronic merchandise. The Art of “Re-Gifting” SOURCE: Various
It is possible that you received a gift that just missed the mark this holiday season. If that happened to you, the rules of engagement for the “art of re-gifting” are worth knowing. Rule #1 for the “art of re-gifting”: Be sure you’re not re-gifting the gift back to the person who gave it to you. This applies in all circumstances. You never want to do a direct “reverse” re-gifting. Rule #1 leads us directly to Rule #2. Rule #2 for the art of re-gifting: If you receive a gift and the first thing that runs through your mind is “are you kidding me?!” write the name of the person who gave the gift to you on a sticky note and attach it to the gift at the earliest opportunity. You never want to lose track of who gave the gift to you, so you can avoid the error of “Rule #1.” Rule #3 is a little more flexible, but worth practicing: When the time comes for you to do your re-gifting of the item – perhaps as a “gag” gift if necessary, try to calculate whether or not the person who gave the item to you is likely to

be in attendance when you pass it along. Ideally, they won’t be, but this is a critical point, especially if the item in question is something oddly specific or out of the ordinary, and therefore easily recognizable. Rule #4: If the item in question is just so ridiculous

or so awful that you wouldn’t even dream of pretending you were giving it to someone as a legitimate gift, you could sell it at a yard sale, or even just drop it into your “free” box. But if there’s any risk that the person who gave it to you could show up at your sale, an even safer option is to donate it to a rummage sale. No, But Seriously It’s probably safe to assume that everyone, at some point in their lives, has re-gifted something. Is it truly OK to re-gift an item? Or is it tacky and inconsiderate? There seems to have been a lot written about re-gifting by etiquette experts and it turns out that most consider it okay to re-gift an item. Naturally this applies when the item in question is not some monstrous embarrassment all on its own. With that in mind, the expert approval is given with some very clear tips to help you handle the situation successfully. Here is some of the expert guidance pulled from an article at goodhousekeeping. com: 1. Re-gifting is perfectly acceptable, especially with the rising popularity of sustainability. An item is better put into the hands of someone who will appreciate it, rather than left to gather dust
on a shelf in the closet. 2. When you re-gift an item it should be brand new and have its original packaging and tags whenever possible. One key thing: Before re-gifting the item be sure and check everywhere for any signs of personalization that may not apply to the person you’re planning to give it to. 3. When re-gifting an item, it must be something that you would have purchased for the individual had you gone to the store. To merely pass along an item you cannot stand is inappropriate. 4. Elevate the presentation by putting genuine effort into rewrapping the gift.

New Tripoli native serves at Aviation Enlisted Aircrew Training School By Alvin Plexico, Navy Office of Community Outreach
Airman Abigail Darnall, a native of New Tripoli, Pennsylvania, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Aviation Enlisted Aircrew Training School. The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in New Tripoli. “Growing up, I learned the importance of hard work without complaining and not expecting things to be handed to you,” said Darnall. "I also learned the importance of volunteering and helping people in need." Darnall joined the Navy seven months ago. “I joined because I wanted to travel and experience the military as a way to serve,” said Darnall. "I didn't want to go to college, but knew I wanted a long-term stable job." Aviation Enlisted Aircrew Training School provides training to enlisted aircrew and rescue swimmer candidates. The training is physically demanding and involves instruction on topics such as aircrew duties and assignments, survival,

first aid and water rescue procedures. With these skills, enlisted aviation personnel from the Navy and Marine Corps will eventually be assigned to fleet squadrons as naval aircrewmen. This year commemorates 50 years of women flying in the U.S. Navy. In 1973, the first eight women began flight school in Pensacola; one year later six of them, known as "The First Six," earned their “Wings of Gold.” Over the past 50 years, the Navy has expanded its roles for women to lead and serve globally and today our women aviators project power from the sea in every type of Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard aircraft. “I'm proud of passing my swim evolutions,” said Darnall. "It was something that I didn't think I would be able to do. Jumping off the tower and going under water was the most challenging part, so it felt good when I completed that." As Darnall and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy. “Serving in the Navy requires teamwork and being the best at your job,” added Darnall. "We can't expect everything to be easy. Sometimes you have to push yourself and not let fear of failure prevent you from succeeding."

Lancaster, in the #3 spot offers a balance between natural and commercial spaces that its residents appreciate. Air Fryer Basics

Congratulations if you just received an Air Fryer this year as a holiday gift. Your first question may be “how does an air fryer work?” Here’s the basic info: The top section of an air fryer holds a heating mechanism and fan. You place the food in a fryerstyle basket and when you turn it on, hot air rushes down and around the food. This rapid circulation makes the food crisp – much like deep-frying, but without the oil. If an Air Fryer is a brand new thing in your kitchen, you might be looking for some guidance on how to use it. According to tasteofhome.com, while using an air fryer is easy, improper use can result in foods that are less than dazzling. Here are a few common mistakes to avoid:
Overcrowding the basket / The machine needs air around it, and the food does, too. If you overcrowd the basket in your air fryer, your food won’t have a lot of exposed surface area. Stick to cooking small batches at a time. Using too much or too little oil / Most air fryers call for only a teaspoon or two of oil. If too much or too little oil is added, you won’t get those crispy, browned results. Most recipes will recommend the correct amount of oil for the dish, but when in doubt, give everything a quick spritz with oil, but don’t overdo it. Skipping the preheat step / An air fryer is like an oven: It needs to be hot so it can properly cook whatever you put in it from the moment the door shuts. If it’s too cold, the final food may suffer. Check your recipe for the suggested temperature when you begin pulling out ingredients for cooking. Then go ahead and turn the air fryer on so it can be plenty hot when you’re ready to use it. This French Fries recipe makes four servings and takes just 30 minutes total time including prep, soaking and cooking. Ingredients • 3 medium potatoes; cut into 1/2-inch strips • 2 tablespoons coconut or avocado oil • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • Chopped fresh parsley, optional Directions 1. Preheat air fryer to 400°. Add potatoes to a large bowl; add enough ice water to cover. Soak for 15 minutes. Drain; place potatoes on towels and pat dry. 2. Combine potatoes, oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper in second large bowl; toss to coat. In batches, place potatoes in a single layer on greased tray in air-fryer basket. Cook until crisp and golden brown, 15-17 minutes, stirring and turning every 5-7 minutes. If desired, sprinkle with parsley.

If one of your favorite parts of the holiday season is all the good eating after the official holiday meals – in other words, leftovers the next day or two, then this article will interest you. The history of leftovers is very interesting and also kind of surprising. Although leftovers got a bad rap along the way, it is hard to deny that certain things do taste better the next day. Beef stew, chili and a good, veggie lasagna come to mind.
The thought that leftovers could be better the next day is actually backed up by some science. Foods that are prepared with aromatics, like onions and garlic, tend to become more flavorful as they cool and then get reheated. This is because the various flavor compounds in the dish become one and taste more uniformly seasoned and a little less bitter. A New Invention What’s interesting is that in the history of food, leftovers are a relatively new invention: Since the dawn of time, humans have worked diligently to find ways to preserve and stretch their food. This was done through various methods like sun-drying, smoking, salting, fermentation, curing, pickling and, in regions where it was cold enough, developing some kind of cool storage. commercially successful refrigerator was invented by Carl von Linde, a German engineer, in 1876. It revolutionized food preservation, storage, and distribution, as well as the way people kept and consumed perishable goods. As refrigerators became more and more common, they changed the way many Americans actually cooked. The focus was less on preserving items for the long term and more on how to transform some elements of last night’s dinner into a new, hot meal. The term “leftover” was officially coined in 1890. Leftovers and World War I According to the National Museum of American History, World War I positioned saving and reusing food as a patriotic duty. A United States Food Administration poster that was created and distributed during the war directed citizens with the following message: “Food – Don’t Waste It. Use less wheat and meat. Buy local foods. Serve just enough. Use what is left.” When the war ended, Americans enjoyed a few years of prosperity, but then the stock market crashed in 1929 and the country went into the Great Depression. It became unthinkable to throw away food during the Great Depression, and refrigerator sales grew thanks to discounted prices offered by manufacturers. The real bump in refrigerator sales, however,
started in 1935, when New Deal loans encouraged Americans to make the switch to electric. Fastforward a few decades however, and leftovers had lost their luster. The 1963 edition of “The Joy of Cooking,” featured a section dedicated to leftovers that was drastically condensed when compared with the original 1931 edition that had “one eye on the family purse.” In the 1960s, food had become so plentiful that leftovers were seen less as a signal of household abundance and more like a drag.
