It’s hard to believe that summer has slipped through our fingers so quickly and it’s already time for the Northampton Street Fair, as well as all of the other fall events throughout our area. It seems like I was just getting excited for baseball season, planting my tomatoes, and lamenting the lack of air conditioning in my car.

Now it’s almost time to bust out the Halloween decorations and stock up on pumpkin-flavored everything.

We are currently looking for “Blue Mountain’s Best” nominations for 2015. We will consider any exceptional or unique neighbors, friends, or family; even charitable or nonprofit organizations are fair game. mouse or a country mouse? Why?

Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: City mouse. I grew up and still live in a small town, but I’ve always enjoyed the energy of the city. I don’t know if I’ll ever end up living in an urban area, but who knows what the future holds?

Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: This past winter, I visited Fort Lauderdale, FL and navigated the bus about 13.25 miles to the beach. I was so proud of myself, I think I sent a text message to everyone in my contact list of my accomplishment. Clearly, I belong in the country!

Tony Pisco, Art Director: I’m a country mouse, mainly because that’s how I grew up. My hometown never even had a traffic light and we never locked our doors until after I went off to college.

Danielle Tepper, Publishing Assistant: Is there such a thing as a beach mouse? No? Well, I was born and raised on the bustling Jersey shore where trips into Manhattan were a regular occurrence. I fell in love with it when I was just eight years old and even when I was a kid, I knew that I would want to someday work and/or live there. I made it for a few months in 2011 while interning for a travel magazine, but I’m still working on the dream of making it permanent. I’ve lived in the Lehigh Valley for 12 years now, and while I do think it’s a beautiful area, small towns just aren’t for me.

Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: I was raised in Slatington as a country mouse. They just celebrated their sesquicentennial and I attended some of their activities, proving that I still prefer to be a country mouse. Living in Lehigh Township for the past 35+ years has made me appreciate the quietness and less hustle and bustle of a city.

Catherine Stroh, Contributing Writer: I love what cities have to offer, but when it comes down to it, I am a country mouse at heart. I love my peace and quiet, beautiful mountains, trails, lakes, and yes, even the endless corn fields.

Jimmy Millikin To Speak At Northampton Assembly of God Revival Services Submitted by PASTOR DANIEL LUNDMARK

The Jimmy J. Millikin Musical and Evangelistic Family of Claremore, Oklahoma, will conduct revival services beginning Sunday morning, September 7, and continuing through Friday evening, September 12, at Northampton Assembly of God (3449 Cherryville Road) in Northampton.

Services will be held at 10:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday and at 7:30 p.m.

Monday through Friday.

Evangelist Jimmy Millikin and his wife, Shauna, minister through inspirational combinations of gospel songs and instrumentals. Shauna plays the piano as they sing, and Jimmy plays soul-stirring saxophone solos. In previous ministry in the church, they were a great blessing to the congregation as Jimmy preached anointed gospel messages and emphasized seeking the Lord at the altar.

The services will also emphasize joyful congregational singing, praise, and worship to God with special times of prayer and seeking God around the altar. All services are open to the public.

Annual Family Picnic

Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund

Submitted by BILL HANKEE Mollie Maher and her PPL's Administration Contract coworkers teamed with a wide range of additional coworkers and together raised $750 for the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund's "Miles that Matter" gas card program with donations collected this month through a fundraising effort at PPL. The Hankees visited PPL Plaza to receive the donation. Mollie and her coworkers asked that the gas cards be given to families transporting children to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. On Tuesday, Bill, Chris and Kyle Hankee were joined by Cheng Tan in delivering the donation in the form of Giant gas gift cards to Caitlin Mulligan, Patient Navigator, at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. With a little additional giving by the Krysta Fund the total gift was $1,000 worth of gas cards. Thank you Mollie, 2009 Krysta Hankee Leadership Scholar, and her team at PPL for their act of kindness toward families needing help with the costs of ongoing medical travel for their children.

Historian Ed Pany To Speak At Sept. Meeting

Tuesday, September 23 at Northampton Area High School. Ed Pany, founder and curator of the Atlas Cement Company Memorial Museum in Northampton, will share his vast knowledge of the industry that was once dominant in the borough and the people who worked in the cement plants.

Pany, a member of Northampton Borough Council, taught American History at Northampton High School for 38 years. He spent many years accumulating artifacts and memories from those who toiled in the cement mills. Working with fellow teacher Roger Firestone, Pany created a one-of-akind museum dedicated to the cement industry that draws visitors from around the world.

Tyler Correll, a graduate of Catasauqua High School, is the Hall of Fameâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 15th Scholar-Athlete Award recipient. The son of Thomas and Barbara Correll, Tyler will be attending Boston University as a chemistry major. Tyler was a member of the National Honor Society, and an Honor Roll (Distinguished Honors) student his entire career at Catasauqua High School. He was the first team Colonial League second baseman, as well as a

Legion All-Star for Fullerton Legion. He compiled a GPA of 96.59 and achieved a class ranking of 6th in a class of 117. Changes At Pathmark Affect Library Rewards Submitted by LOUISE BECHTEL Attention Pathmark shoppers: If you signed up to donate to the library with your rewards card, you need to use your rewards card at the register.

Pathmark has moved to automatically give savings to all shoppers, but the Slatington Library will not get credit unless you scan your Pathmark shoppers card.

The Slatington Library has a brand new circulation/catalog system thanks to three grants from local organizations: Trexler, Horsehead, and Mickley/Fravel. We now belong to the same system as Lehighton, Palmerton, and Dimmick libraries. If you go online to our webpage (www. slatelibrary.com), there is now a link to our online catalog. You can set up an account and renew your books or place a hold on books you would like to take out.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health will be holding a blood pressure screening the last Friday of each month at the library from 10 a.m. to noon.

-Florence Baver September 27, 1962 Last week the man who thousands of people came to see, came to this Dutch region. Lawrence Welk is no Pennsylvania German since he was not born or raised in Pennsylvania. But he is one of us since his roots stem from a region of Europe where they spoke Dutch just like ours.

His parents taught him the dialect when he was young. Lawrence Welk was asked last Friday evening, that we ourselves heard, if he would understand what we said and he replied, “Yes, I can understand it.”

The organization that goes by the name, Fereinicht Pennsylfawnish Deitsch Fulk, Inc., [from Berks County (Are they still active?)] gave Welk a poem in Dutch this last Friday night in his room under the stage at the Allentown Fair during intermission of the show that ran from six to eight o’clock.

We were allowed to be there with our tape recorder and get it on tape what was said at that time. We did not have much time and everything was very brief. Governor Lawrence and his party were also there behind the stage waiting to come in and talk with Welk.

First a poem was presented to Welk and a photographer took a picture of that. Welk asked if they would translate the poem for him and send it to him, as he had trouble reading or writing Dutch.

[Ethnicity of Lawrence Welk: Welk was born in the German-speaking community of Strasburg, North Dakota, a son of Ludwig and Christiana (Schwahn) Welk, ethnic Germans who emigrated to America in 1892 from Selz, Kutschurgan District, in the German-speaking area north of Odessa (now Odessa, Ukraine [?], but then in southwestern Russia). Submitted by JUDY SNYDER On August 10, the celebration at the Northern Jean shared her knowledge and experiences while Lehigh Middle School commenced at 10 a.m. traveling on the Berksie.

Closing our history presentations was Terry with a multi-denominational church service. The pastors from the local churches participated with a Stoudt. He spoke about the 1950s sports era and forty member choir directed by Anna Milot. After the current sports era in the Slatington/Northern the church service, we journeyed to the Slatington Lehigh area. After each presentation, there was a American Legion at 510 Main Street. Several question and an answer period.

In addition to the above presentations, a historic displays, such as Dr. Mazepa’s Indian artifacts, wagon tour was led by local historian, Christy old Slatington pictures, and memorabilia, were Haydt. The tour started at the park on Second and featured.

Beginning at noon, several speakers offered Main Street and traveled through upper Main a variety of topics. The first guest speaker, Jim Street and along the Slate Heritage Trail.

PA Builders Association Wins Awards For Best Website and Service Submitted by MELANIE WISE The Pennsylvania Builders Association (PBA) has been recognized for its outstanding member services with two Awards of Excellence from the Executive Officers Council (EOC) of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

“We are greatly honored to have the hard work and dedication of PBA staff recognized with this Association Excellence Award,” said Kevin Coutts, president of PBA. “It is our goal to continuously strive for excellence when it comes to the benefits and services we provide for our members and local builders associations.”

The Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to join them on Saturday, September 13 from 10

a.m. until 5 p.m. at the annual Historic Northampton Street Fair. The fair is held on Main Street from 21st Street down to 18th Street. This year’s fair will again feature a multitude of food vendors, crafters and tours of the beloved Roxy Theatre.

The street fair is a nice community event, a time to relax and enjoy walking Main Street and seeing friends, getting some of your Christmas shopping done early, and taking in the sights and sounds of entertainers and sociable vendors. While wandering the streets, visitors can enjoy live music by Steel Creek Band, Celtic Adventure, and Henry Laurito.

If you’ve ever visited Northampton and either drove by or took in a movie at the Roxy, you know how much of a treasure this beautiful, art deco-adorned theatre is, not only to Northampton, but to the entire Lehigh Valley.

If you haven’t seen the theatre, make it a point to stop by for a tour given by owner Richard Wolfe. Then head outside to enjoy the street fair and all of the crafters, food vendors, and entertainers that make this street fair a pleasant, relaxing family event for all. Of course, the fair is free to all visitors as are the tours of the Roxy Theatre.

Recycled Vinyl Record Bowls

I am a music addict. That being said, you can guess that the décor in my space reflects my love for all things melodic. (And you would be correct).

I love the idea of repurposing vinyl records into functioning art for around the house. DO NOT use a record you’ve loved, are currently loving, or one day may love again. I picked up a few at the local thrift store for pennies and the artist’s music is easy to find on CD and digital download.

•One vinyl record, any size •Deep bowl or coffee mug – oven safe •Cookie sheet

Steps

Step 1: Preheat oven to 240°F Step 2: Place mug (or bowl) upside down on a cookie sheet and carefully center the vinyl so that the label is resting on the mug.

Step 3: Place in oven for 3-5 minutes; carefully watch for the record to become floppy.

Step 4: At this point, you can shape the vinyl by hand (or use an oven mitt as the record may be hot).

Woman’s Club Of Slatington Celebrates 75th Anniversary Submitted by DEBBIE BARHIGHT As a club, celebrating 75 years from 1939 to 2014, the Slatington Woman’s Club recently participated in the 150th Celebration of Slatington parade. The theme of the float was Woman’s Club of Slatington—Supporting Woman’s Interests and the Community Through Generations. The float chronicled women’s changing roles, dress, major happenings, and club interests through the generations it has been in existence. The club motto was seen on the banner leading the float: “Woman’s Club of Slatington…keeping the flame of friendship and service burning bright.”The float won second place in the “Present” category. The Woman’s Club would like to thank the Slatington 150th committee and volunteers who made the week-long celebration a well-organized success.

We would also like to acknowledge the Byler Family, Lori Vernon, Scott Barhight, and Kevin Fegely for their help and generosity to our club.

The Woman’s Club of Slatington is beginning a new club year on Monday evening, September 15 with a pot luck dinner meeting. October’s meeting will be craft night. The community service club has five basic areas of interest: home life, education, conservation, public outreach, and

the arts. Meeting monthly, interesting programs are presented and a local high school senior girl of the month is honored. Community support is a focus as well as fun and fellowship. Meetings are held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Second Street in Slatington at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month from September through May. Membership is open to women ages 18 and over.

Laurys Station Community Day

Submitted by TAMMY MARUSHAK Laurys Station will hold their annual Community Day celebration on September 20 from 2 p.m. until the fireworks at sundown.

Laurys Station Fire Co., located at 5314 Egypt Road in Laurys Station, will host the event.

Community day is free; organizers are asking for a donation of a canned good for Agape NTF food pantry. There will be live music by “DJ Dave D.” and “The Deadliners” as well as games for kids of all ages. Food offerings will be provided by Newhard’s Corn, Bad Bones BBQ, Geiger’s Potatoes, and Troop 144 Food.

High School Football Preview LEHIGHTON

Coach: Tom McCaroll (3rd season, 9-12) 2013 Record: 6-5 overall, 4-4 in MVC Thoughts: Lehighton showed a great turnaround in 2013 by qualifying for the District 11 3A playoffs just one season after going 3-7.

Last year generated enough clout for the Indians in their first season in the Anthracite Football League as they were picked second in the preseason coaches’ poll and also received two firstplace votes. Head coach Tom McCaroll doesn’t put much too much stock into that, but he still believes this season will be a thriller.

“We feel good about the approach we have,” he said. “We feel good about the turnaround that we are in the process of here in year three. It is just excitement. We are getting our local rivalries back as well as face some new unknowns. Playing against some of these teams, I know the energy

they bring and it will be physical.”

Physicality will reign supreme in the AFL, like usual, but the Indians will provide the skills as well. Junior quarterback Tyler Cann, who had over 1,400 passing and rushing yards last year, as well as junior running back Wyatt Clements, who amassed just under 1,000 rushing yards in 2013, will be essential to Lehighton’s offensive attack and if they repeat their success from last year, the pre-season poll may be a very accurate indicator of how the league shakes out.

NORTHAMPTON Coach: Mark Scisly (1st season) 2013 Record: 0-12 overall, 0-9 LVC Thoughts: When Mark Scisly took over this struggling program, he knew there was going to need to be a major overhaul. The first thing and the most noticeable one is the attitude of the players.

“I want to see the whole attitude of the program change,” Scisly said.“The attitudes of the kids have been great. They really work hard.”

Scisly, who is known for turning teams back into winning ways, does not have many returning starters this fall. He does have returning seniors Alex Ardle and Ty Marinelli and also junior lineman Logan Koehler, who may be one of the Continued on Page 52

NORTHERN LEHIGH

Coach: Joe Tout (9th season, 60-32) 2013 Record: 2-8 overall and in CL Thoughts: 2013 was only the second losing season for Northern Lehigh since 1998 and they haven’t had that many losses in a single season since the late 90s. However, most of that was attributed to injuries and inexperience. After healing and maturity, head coach Joe Tout, who usually only knows winning, is ready to start fresh.

“We never focus on the previous year. Following successful seasons we remind our team that it is a new year and we focus on the new year. We are taking the same approach this year,”Tout said.

The Bulldogs return senior Nate Farber who amassed over 1,000 yards on the ground last season.

They are going with junior Chad Cederberg under center after he missed most of last season with an injury. This squad is young but experienced and if they stay injury free, Tout believe they can compete. Their return to prominence, however, may still be a year away.

Northwestern was happy to make the Eastern Conference playoffs last season, but still wants more. The Tigers are the pre-season favorite in the Colonial League and rightfully so as the rebuild in New Tripoli has finished and it is time for Snyder and his team to cash in.

PALMERTON

Coach: Chris Walkowiak (4th season, 6-24) 2013 Record: 2-8 overall and CL Thoughts: Palmerton hasn’t had much pull in the Colonial League in recent years, but since Walkowiak took over, there has been considerable progress. That trend has given the coaching staff a new philosophy for this fall.

“It has been a great summer and camp thus far with the experience we have coming back both in the skill area and on the line,” Walkowiak said.

“We want to play with a sense of urgency this year and make sure we execute on every snap. If all 11 players execute their assignments on every snap, we should win that play. If we win the most plays in a game; we should have a good chance of winning more games.”

The Blue Bombers want to turn the tide and play competitive games that are meaningful late in the season. Led by senior linebacker and running back Tre Nelson, who is a pre-season All-State

“I feel very good about our defense,” Morgans told Stephen Miller of The Morning Call. “A lot of these kids got legitimate letters and played in a lot of ball games, lots of crucial games and at crucial times.”

The Trojans seem poised to make another run at the league and district titles as well. They may even make some noise in the state tournament as well, but for Parkland, they are not satisfied until they claim the hardware for themselves.

Fall TV Premieres I’m like a kid on Christmas morning when fall sweeps rolls around. I giddily set my TiVo to record all my favorite shows and mark dates on my calendar for season premieres. My schedule is jam-packed with medical drama, singing students, Russian spies, and zombies (sorry, walkers). I come home from work, eat dinner, shower, and settle in with my remote for a good two to three hours. I’m a total couch potato—no shame!

Release dates for the 2014 season have recently been announced and I’m already counting down the days to when I get to see my favorite characters on the small screen once again. My schedule looks a little something like this:

New Girl—Season 4 airs 9/16 @ 9 on FOX About A Boy—Season 2 returns 10/14 @ 9:30 on NBC Normally my Tuesdays were consumed by the Fox smash Glee, but it’s been revealed that the comedy musical’s sixth and final season is only a half-er. So we have to wait until January of 2015 to see what happens next in The Rachel Berry Show.

Now my Tuesdays are sitcom nights. New Girl is one of the best new comedies to come out in years and has me cackling at decibel levels in nearly every episode.

The guys all perfectly complement one another and their coordinated facial expressions and zippy oneliners almost make up for having to put up with Zooey Deschanel’s “adorkable” personality for 22 minutes.

Even though she’s my least favorite character, I hated to see her break up with Nick last year, so I’m anxiously awaiting what happens next in their little dance. Are they the next generation’s Ross and Rachel? So far, yes.

I also gave the pilot test to a newcomer last season that featured a New Girl guest star as a womanizing neighbor to a vegan Brit and her well-bred son. About A Boy turned out to be a heart-warming and hilarious new addition to my watch list.

Nashville—Season 3 begins 9/24 @ 10 on ABC American Horror Story—Season 4: Freak Show comes back 10/8 @ 10 on FX While I impatiently wait for the butt-kicking Jennings undercover operatives to return in 2015, their timeslot is held by the Ryan Murphy anthology, American Horror Story. This year’s freak show is, well, a freak show. That alone is reason to tune in. While I was disappointed with last year’s “Coven” and underwhelmed by season 1’s “Murder House,” the mayhem in the middle (“Asylum”) was still deliciously twisted enough that I’ll tune in again just to see how this one goes. Most of the incredibly talented cast is back, and I’m interested to see who plays the bearded lady.

Then there’s the country capital of the world with its melodrama and musical distractions. I wasn’t sure if I’d keep enjoying Nashville, but it’s proven to be a substantial drama with intriguing plot twists and surprising singing talent from its two leads. Hayden Panettierre knocks it out of the park by flip-flopping between vulnerable and fierce as a starlet trying to build—and keep—her career.

Grey’s Anatomy—Season 11 starts up 9/25 @ 8 on ABC Parenthood—Season 6 premieres 9/25 @ 10 on NBC (FINAL SEASON) I’ve been with Grey’s since the beginning and it’s not slowing down. The writing is always spot-on, the drama feels real, the medicine is edge-of-your-seat intriguing, and the characters have never become two-dimensional outlines of who they used to be. The show has grown and evolved just as the titular Meredith Grey has and I

can’t wait to return to the OR. Then one of the most underrated family dramas of all time (my personal opinion, that is) returns with its final season. Always on the brink of cancellation, I’m anxious to see how loose ends are tied up now that the showrunners have had the time to carefully plan and execute the end of a heart-warming and, at times, heart-wrenching show. Amber is my favorite character, and it looks like they’re about to give her one hell of a storyline after the finale’s semi-cliffhanger. Grab the tissues, since you know it wouldn’t be a Thursday night with the Bravermans without the waterworks.
