I think what separates an artist from everyone else is passion.

Passion to continue creating in the face of adversity, to go to college for writing or fine arts when everyone sneers at your choice of a major. Artists don’t do it for money or recognition; they do it because they can’t imagine doing anything else. This is our arts edition, which is one of our favorite issues to put together–from the original artwork on the cover to being able to immerse ourselves in creativity–it’s a fun one. I hope that enthusiasm comes through on the page.

I’d also like say thanks to everyone who came out to the fundraiser for the Northern Lehigh Food Bank at our office on September 6. It’s great to see the community come together to support a good cause.

LCCC Ribbon Cutting Ceremony For New Lounge

Submitted by SEAN DALLAS Veterans are invited to attend the open house and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Veterans and Returning Adults Lounge at Lehigh Carbon Community College on Sept. 24. The event is being held from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the main campus in Schnecksville. The ribbon cutting will be at 10 a.m. with remarks from Dr. Ann D. Bieber, president of LCCC. Were you involved in the arts as a kid?

Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: I’ve always enjoyed writing, which is a natural extension of my love of reading. One of my most prized possessions when I was a kid was an old typewriter that I used to write short stories.

Danielle Tepper, Editor: I wrote my first poem at 8, short story at 9, and began my first manuscript at 10. I played the flute, devoured book after book, loved going to plays, and watched just as many movies then as I do now. I think the love of my own abilities and the fascination of others’ talents in dance, theater, film, music, painting, etc, played

Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: I read and wrote a lot of poetry growing up. I haven’t written anything in a really long time, but I’m exploring other forms of art and am currently trying to learn to play the guitar.

Catherine Stroh, Staff Writer: When I was a little kid, I would constantly write short stories and poetry. As I grew older, those developed into photography and photo essays. I have always found it easier to express myself through photography or the written word and I will always appreciate the pure talent of artists and what they do.

Tony Pisco, Art Director: I acted in plays in high school and college, but now I just explore artistic endeavors through graphic design.

Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: I attended Lincoln Elementary School in Slatington. Art classes were with Mr. Garrity. One of my memories from art class was sitting on the school playground and having to draw the school. Not sure why this particular memory sticks in my head, but I remember this as though it was just yesterday on a nice fall day, drawing and coloring red brick—maybe because when my mother now lives in the high rise center where Lincoln Elementary originally was.

Submitted by BRENDA RICHARDS Christ UCC Walnutport will be recognizing the important role pets play in our spiritual lives by presenting a Blessing of the Animal Ceremony Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. The service will be held on the front lawn of the church at 309 Main St. in Walnutport. The church invites all pets and their human companions to come and receive a blessing.

The church wants to reach out to everyone whose life has been blessed with a pet or pets. “I know this type of service has been done before,” Pastor Brian Haas states, “but I have witnessed many shut-in individuals with pets who rarely can leave their homes, yet these pets still provide daily comfort and companionship to their human guardians. Therefore, if the owners or pets cannot physically be present at this short service, Christ UCC will accept photos of these pets for the blessing.”

Thursday Top Tens I think it goes without saying that writers love to write about things that they love. Common sense, right? For our “Focus On The Arts” issue, which you now hold in your hands, it got me thinking of how I came to fall in love with my particular artsy side: I paint with words. I’ve loved to do it practically since I learned to read and turn pen strokes into lovely cursive letters.

As I grew up, I indulged in countless literary adventures, cinematic experiences, and stage spectacles. I was in awe of what other people could do with their minds and bodies. That fascination never wavered as I eventually entered high school, attended that very first journalism class, and came to the realization that I could make a living out of writing about things that I loved.

“Pajamas Over People” was born as a way for me to keep my cheeky sarcasm intact while gushing over moments in television, music, and more that brought me simple joy. It’s an addiction, but it’s a fun one.

In December of 2013, I teamed up with my Gazette partner-in-crime, Joe Korba, to bring some fun filler to our website for the weeks where a new issue doesn’t come out in print. We dubbed it the Thursday Top Ten and we basically ramble about whatever our little hearts desire. They’re mostly entertainment-based, but there have also been topics like food, travel, bucket list items, throwbacks, thrill rides, vacation spots, and time wasters.

For our readers who are web-savvy, we hope you’ve been checking it out. If not, I’ve compiled a sampler platter of some of the moments in pop culture I’ve been all too happy to write about. Top Ten Stand-Up Comedians Ellen DeGeneres Ellen barely has to try to make people laugh, just her vocal inflections and facial expressions are enough to make you grin along with her, as if she just winked at you and you love being in on the joke. She doesn’t have to stoop to being offensive or crude and her language is perfectly PG. I particularly love her second HBO stand-up special entitled, “Here And Now” from 2003. It’s one hour of Ellen pointing out life’s strange quirks, like store packaging techniques (“You need scissors to get into scissors!”), movie theater etiquette (“Is the popcorn really that delicious we must shovel handfuls of it into our mouth?”), and cell phone reception (“Are the bangs shorter? THE BANGS!”), to name a few.

FACE-OFF: Books VS. Films Harry Potter It should come as no surprise that when I first met Daniel Radcliffe with his little lightning bolt forehead and adorable British accent, I was hooked. He was truly the perfect Harry. The films paid beautiful homage to J.K. Rowling‘s beloved book series and the franchise only improved as the years went on. A decade of my life was dedicated to the anticipation of the next film. When I finally turned the last page of the last book, I thought to myself, how in the world would the film live up to it? I needn’t have worried. Yates performed magic. The trailer alone completely riddles my body with goose bumps and when I saw the film on opening night, I had heart palpitations for the entire two hours. I cried like no 23-year-old should cry while watching a fantasy film “for kids.”

Top Ten TV Series Finales Boy Meets World | May 5, 2000 “Brave New World” The two-part finale to my all-time favorite show, although disjointed and lacking continuity from a storyline perspective, was a fitting send-off to the TGIF sitcom. It was one of those perfect hour-long clip episodes that took you back through everything you knew you loved about the show. Seven seasons’ worth of favorite moments play at rapid speed, so even though the show ends in tears, at least it has the good form to give you 45 minutes of hysterical laughter first. The very second Mr. Feeny tells them to believe in themselves … dream … try … do good … the tears are already flowin’. I cannot handle this finale, no matter how many times I’ve seen it. I’m a sobbing mess by the time Cory says, “You’ll always be with us. As long as we live, OK?” (Because truth.)

And when Feeny finally says those final words? Oh, it hurts so good.

Ten Favorite Concerts Justin Timberlake | The 20/20 Experience World Tour | Madison Square Garden I. Lost. My. Mind. End of story. Most I’ve ever spent on a show ($175) and I would only ever spend that much on this man. Worth every penny. He was getting over being sick and still flawlessly powered through a 32-song set list. He played the majority of 20/20 but also revisited hits from his prior two albums. “Cry Me A River” threw the stadium into complete pandemonium. He launched into Sinatra’s “New York, New York” and that was it, I was done.

And that was before the first set even ended. It was the best night ever spent with three of my best girls and our beloved JT. Mmph.

Winners Announced For Slatington Sesquicentennial Scamper 5K Submitted by ROBERT STETTNER Under pleasant racing conditions, over 65 runners and walkers participated in the kick-off event to the Slatington 150 Celebration by entering the Slatington Sesquicentennial scamper, sponsored by the Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission. The race was held on Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Slatington Trailhead, which began at 9 a.m. when Slatington Mayor Walter Niedermeyer shot the starter pistol.

Music mogul partners with The Nature Conservancy in admirable attempt to slow ivory demand

I

n 1980, an estimated 1.2 million elephants roamed Africa. Today, that number has tragically dwindled down to a mere 430,000, with approximately 20,000 being killed each year.

These staggering statistics recently caught the attention of Christian Frederick Martin IV, CEO of Nazareth’s own musical gem, Martin Guitar. “I started to pay attention to the information that was coming out of the media about the declining number of elephants and the poaching and the extraordinary amount of ivory coming onto the market in China,” said Martin. “I decided to look into it.”

Martin Guitar had been using ivory in their guitar construction for years, mainly for two pieces called the nut and the saddle. “It’s where the strings start and stop,” explained Martin. “Where the vibration is transferred and secured. It’s the beginning of tone generation. It’s beautiful and durable; that’s why it was used for guitars.”

In the ‘60s and ‘70s, they started phasing out its usage and switched from elephant ivory to preserved mammoth ivory in the late 1960s.

“Some enterprising people went into the tundra and uncovered these petrified mammoth tusks. They had a funky look to them, but they were still ivory,” Martin explained. “This was pre-CITES, but even so, these animals died years ago. Through different sources, we realized it was a pretty cool alternative.”

CITES is the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which acts as “an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.” (www.cites.org) Which should spell protection for the elephants, but clearly hasn’t done much to deter poachers from going after them anyway.

Martin Guitar eventually decided to stop using the preserved mammoth ivory as well, for a clean break from the trade.

“The fear is, somewhere down the line, you don’t

really know where it’s coming from,” Martin said.

“Someone could take a new tusk, make it look old, bury it for a while, and then try to market it. And that’s very disappointing, because it was a way for us to more authentically make replicas. Consumers were disappointed, but just to be safe, we said, we’ve got to stop.”

Recently, Martin remembered a hang-tag stating their position on ivory usage that had been placed on their guitars around the time of the phase-out and dug one out of their archives.

“I thought, my goodness, even back almost 40 years ago, the company made a very bold statement: we’re done,” he said. “And I thought, 40 years later and there’s still a market for ivory when, in fact, it’s been at the top level of CITES for a long time. And I thought, this just isn’t right.”

Martin hopes their confident stand against the ivory market will encourage people to think about where certain materials originate.

“It sure seems like there has to be a lot of fuss and bother in the media to get people’s attention. That’s what got my attention,” he said. “The fear is that the population will decline to the point where they’re no longer in the wild, they’re just in zoos. And this was the concern back when we first had that hang-tag.

That’s what appalls me; there’s been no change.”

Enter The Nature Conservancy (www.nature. org) with a plan. The partnership initiation with TNC was a “perfect storm,” according to Martin Guitar’s Vice President of Brand Marketing, Amani Duncan. Martin’s public relations agency, Dan Klores Communications in New York, was working with The

Nature Conservancy and connected the two. TNC had been working behind the scenes for years on their African elephant initiative and were just getting ready to launch. “Because of our conjoined histories with this cause, it was a perfect marriage because it comes from a place of credibility and authenticity,” said Duncan. “We also wanted to make sure we married ourselves to someone with the muscle to actually do some really profound work and make a mighty voice.”

“They saw our hang-tag and they said, hey, here’s a company who used ivory and stopped and we’d like to partner with them,” said Martin. “I don’t want to be arrogant about this, but the Martin brand is very wellknown. So they said, it’s a high quality product and they seem to be ethical, this could be beneficial to us.”

“There wasn’t yet a guitar manufacturer that was making a stand,” Duncan explained. “So we said, you know what, we believe in this, this has been our truth since the late 1960s.”

Martin Guitar became the founding sponsor of the TNC’s Save Elephants campaign, which they jumpstarted with an auction; a left-handed D-28 signed by Sir Paul McCartney sold for $50,000 in 15 minutes.

“Artists have become leery these days of signing guitars because they usually all end up on eBay. He knows his signature is valuable, and he’s behind it, which is great,” said Martin.

According to Duncan, this campaign is all about raising funds, which will go directly to who she calls the “boots on the ground.”

“They’re the people fighting the battle every day,” she said. “They’re like the elephant SWAT team, the elite force patrolling in Africa. Their lives are in danger every single day, going up against these poachers. 20,000 elephants slaughtered a year is heartbreaking. These animals are in protected environments and poachers are going in there anyway.

It gives me chills just thinking about it.”

Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. “We got a nice video clip from a bunch of folks in Africa saying, Martin Guitar, we thank you for the partnership and the financial support—so they can keep an eye on the elephants and let the poachers know they’re watching,” said Martin.

It will take at least a year before they start to really see the impact of their efforts.

“20,000 elephants are killed per year, that we know about,” said Duncan. “That’s just in Africa; we haven’t even begun to tackle India. When we start to see that number decrease, that’s when we’ll know.”

“I do believe that there is power in numbers, but

you also can’t be everywhere and do everything. It can be a very daunting prospect when you think about it,” Duncan admitted. “I say you always have to think about the why—why do we do this, why do we buy this—and when you take a step back, why we’re doing this is to change a cultural system. They’re impoverished and desperate; desperate people do desperate things.

We have to put in resources to change their economic environment, so that these senseless crimes against animals are not an option. It’s overwhelming; we have to change an entire mindset, one step at a time. We would feel defeated every day if we tried to bite off this huge chunk. We can’t do everything, but we try to do what we can to make an impact.”

Martin added, “The key is, we can get all excited in America and we can give all this money, but we can’t legislate what goes on in Africa. What has to happen is, the people in Asia have to realize where the ivory’s coming from. Right now, they’re in denial. It’s a work in progress, but I am hearing that word is getting out in China that you should be embarrassed for using ivory.”

“China thinks ivory is prestigious and that’s what’s driving the demand,” said Duncan. “We just need to create enough of a social movement, enough chatter, to say otherwise. It’s all about engagement, to get people to start talking.”

Duncan continued, “This is not the charity initiative of the moment so we feel good about ourselves when we go home. It’s something that we believe in, which speaks a lot about Martin Guitar. We all get caught up in our day-to-day. It’s a nice reminder that there’s a big world out there; it’s not just about hawking your product and reaching your sales goals. This is something that everyone can really rally behind. We need people out there preaching the good word that we have to save these amazing creatures.”

Dana Carey Artist, Bethlehem

My name is Dana Carey. I am a local artist, originally from South Plainfield, NJ, now residing in Bethlehem, PA. I have spent my whole life constantly doodling, painting, drawing, finding any creative way to allow my imagination to spill out. I was lucky enough to maintain such an imagination throughout my teenage years and continuously into my adulthood through my art.

I attended Northampton Community College majoring in Fine Arts. After finishing at NCC, I moved to Philadelphia and attended Tyler School of Art majoring in Studio Arts, with a minor concentration of Early Childhood Education at Temple.

My imagination and my need for constant creativity has allowed me to dabble in a little bit of everything in the artists world. I manage to get use out of any type of medium I can get my hands on. When I have a Sharpie in

hand, I tend to focus on line-work as well as a pointillismesque style. When I am painting, it is usually an explosion of color in an abstract realm. When I am using charcoal, I focus mostly on portraits and realism. I also dabble in spray paint (which tends to lean towards a more galactic theme), jewelry making, album design, and tattoo design.

I have been lucky enough to get the opportunity to show my work at multiple exhibits and shows in the Lehigh Valley as well as Philadelphia. I have shown my work at such places as The Quadrant in Easton, Artifest in Allentown, The Bethlehem Art Walks, The Allentown House Tours, numerous independent galleries of First Fridays in Philadelphia, and multiple other independent shows in the Valley.

Art has had such an important impact on me and who I am as a human being. I am so grateful to have such a strong creative side allowing me to express myself as well as incorporate my art into not only my personal life but my professional life.

ARTIST SHOWCASE Brian Xander Singer/Songwriter, Schnecksville

Brian Xander is a singer/songwriter from Schnecksville whose songs “Still Not Over You” and “Drive Fast Turn Left” reflect his influences by some of the most powerful voices and musicians in music history.

Brian didn’t pick up playing guitar until his junior year in college, which is around the time he began writing lyrics and songs. After a few years, Brian began playing locally as a solo acoustic act and has since found success opening for country superstars Phil Vassar, Neal McCoy, Josh Turner, and Tim Rushlow. Brian enjoys playing locally and has had a career highlight of performing at the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville, TN. He has also played at the Opry Mills Entertainment Complex as a featured artist. Outside the Wall Tribute Band, Lehighton

Outside the Wall is a Pink Floyd Tribute Band, which faithfully brings the timeless music of Pink Floyd to the stage. The band has been playing locally in Allentown, Bethlehem, and Stroudsburg for about three years. They started out in a local Lehighton pub at an open mic night regularly and soon realized that they had a special bond and talent together and formed a band.

Members are Gary Wehrkamp (lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, keyboard) from Stroudsburg, Sean Simpson (vocals, bass, and keyboard) from Bethlehem, Chris Forgione (electric and acoustic guitar, bass, and percussion) from New York, originally Stroudsburg, and Mark Marina (drums) from Bethlehem. They also have three back-up singers, plus they feature several other drummers in their show as well. Outside the Wall has played at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, First Energy Stadium in Reading, Barley Creek in Tannersville, Camelbeach in Tannersville, Summer of Love Festival in Wind Gap, and a few other places.

I create wire tree sculptures using a variety of different sizes, colors, and types of wire. I then place the finished piece on different bases such as glass, rocks, driftwood, and other natural forms. I’ve been creating them since 1977. I have, all my life, had a need to create art in one form or another. My art is an expression of who I am and what I want to do. I moved to Coplay in May of this year, so I have not yet had a chance to explore the local art environment, or place my work in any galleries. However my work can be seen on over 90 websites, including my own. I do accept commissions and have created hundreds of pieces for clients all over the world. The inspiration for creating my sculptures grew from a lifetime love of trees. I am in awe of the stately presence and silent majesty they posses. I find the structure of trees to be one of the perfections in nature. With their roots embracing the earth; in winter they show their bones, in spring gentle buds, in summer a canopy of green, and in fall a magical kaleidoscope of colors. This is the farm which the PA Folklife Society bought with the profits that were made at the Folk Festival at Kutztown this year. The profits were large enough this year to buy these grounds and for the first time to hold the festival on their own grounds next year.

Of course, profits were made at the Folk Festival in Kutztown every year, but never was enough turned over to the society to buy their own grounds. What the profits were used for we can not say or who used it we also do not know. It was Dr. Shoemaker’s dream already for many years to do what was done here.

Last Sunday Dr. Shoemaker called an assembly, for all those that helped put on the Festival at Kutztown this year, at this farm, which now shall be the home of the Folklife Society. There were approximately a few hundred people at the meeting to look over the place and start planning for next years Festival.

It rained hard that Sunday, else even more people would have been there.

As far as we could see, this place is very suitable for the festival in the upcoming years. Our interest was focused on the house that is there and we looked it over very well to begin planning for next year’s Festival. The rooms are large, there is a spring in the cellar and at the next festival the butter churning woman has a normal place to work, the cook can work in the kitchen, and the cleaning lady can have a normal place on the back porch. The washer woman can wash in the wash house and on the second floor we can make the spare room look like such. In other words, we can better make everything look more ‘natural’, than we could on the fairgrounds.

What we do not want to forget to say, is that this will take many items and much work to get this place in order for next year’s festival. We want to ask you, if you have anything that you no longer use or do value, please do not throw it away or burn it.

Well a couple weeks ago, YouTube user Josh Gottsegen says he “caught this little guy refusing to leave the dog park. His owner claims they visit the dog park every day and he throws a fit each time they leave.” Gottsegen added his own humorous spin—subtitles—and the clip wound up on HuffPost, People.com, Thought Catalog, AOL.com, Reddit, and many, many more. Jonathan Tropper brings us a cleverly written novel of 352 pages of comedy and family drama filled to the brim with sex, confrontation, lust, love, and divorce, just to name a few. This Is Where I Leave You is an easy page-turner, yet intelligent and deep enough to make one ponder all aspects of life.

Our main character Judd finds himself at a horribly depressing rocky bottom when he walks in a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are grieving the death of someone close to them.

To make matters worse, Judd receives the news of his father’s passing after a long battle with cancer. Judd must return to his hometown for his father’s funeral services, along with his three other siblings and their immediate families as well. Between Judd’s sarcastically cynical sister, polar opposite brothers, provocative mother and old exes, things get rather interesting while the family is obligated to honor the deceased’s wishes and sit Shiva (seven days) under one stifling roof.

Repressed conflicts and decade-old grudges arise within the family and Judd is forced to confront his past and present head-on. While coping with his current marriage woes, he runs into and begins to rekindle an old high school love.

told his father, and things he repressed up until the present. When Judd is made aware of some life-changing news (for instance, his mother is now a lesbian and he is indeed the father of his wife’s coming baby), he must make the decision to move forward, forgive, and start becoming whole again for his future baby girl. Despite the fistfights, tears, screaming, and affairs that all occur over the Shiva, the broken family somehow manages to become whole again and receive some muchneeded closure.

The characters and events in This Is Where I Leave You are so relatable that I think it will reach audiences of many ages and tastes. At one point or another, every family has problems and every person has conflict they must confront eventually.

Every character is credible and portrayed perfectly; at least one of these personalities will jump off the pages and into your heart. By the end of the book you will feel like you are part of their family, like you know these characters inside and out, and you’ll be sad to see them go their separate ways. You may also be sad to put the book down when the time comes to finish it; I know I was.

This Is Where I Leave You teaches us that one must forgive to move on, to laugh at the little things, and to stop and appreciate one’s life and the people in it, for they will not always be there.

This book was my first by Jonathan Tropper. I was instantly hooked and pleasantly surprised to find a new favorite author. I plan to read his other novels and look forward to the film adaptation of This Is Where I Leave You, which stars Jason Bateman as Judd and hits theatres September 18.

School Year Kicks Off With A Haircut

Submitted by ALLISON CHRUSCIAL The beginning of the school year for Slatington Elementary students proved to be very interesting when their principal Mr. Scott Pyne agreed to have a student cut his hair.

As part of the school’s PSSA incentive, Nicholas Miller, current sixth grader, was given the pleasure of cutting Mr. Pyne’s hair. Nicholas had the highest combined PSSA math and reading score in the entire school.

In addition to the coveted prize of cutting Mr. Pyne’s hair, all students who scored advanced and/or proficient at Slatington Elementary received tickets that were entered into a raffle for two tablets and six Barnes & Noble gift cards. The PSSA incentives created noticeable excitement prior to the PSSAs and at the beginning of this school year.

Historic Demonstrations Teach PA Dutch Culture

Submitted by JODI BETH WAGNER Kutztown University’s Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center (PGCHC) will host Hemmet Fescht from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27. The PGCHC is located at 22 Luckenbill Road in Kutztown. Come and celebrate harvest time traditions and Pennsylvania Dutch culture. This year’s demonstrations will include hearth cooking, fraktur designing, Civil War encampment, hex sign painting, and more.

Bring the whole family. Hands-on children’s activities include pumpkin painting, sand art, wagon rides, and a petting zoo. The Acoustic Roadshow's “Make Your Own Music” tent will be up for the second year in a row. Both children and adults will enjoy learning how to create music.

Visitors won’t want to miss the Old Time Plow Boys’ kitchen, where they will be cooking delicious Pennsylvania Dutch favorites and desserts. The Plow Boys will also have antique tractors on display, conduct plowing demonstrations, and provide hay rides through the beautiful fields of the historic Sharadin Farmstead.
