From The Editor’s Desk. I have a tendency to get nostalgic this time of year. The holiday season always makes me reflect and get a little sentimental. I take stock of all the good and the bad that has happened since this time last year. I also think of Thanksgivings and Christmases past, the family and friends that are no longer with us. It can sometimes be a melancholy exercise, reminiscing, but there is so much to be thankful for, and so much to look forward to in the future, that I never slip into the easy traps of cynicism or pessimism. This past year I was struck by what a great community our paper has the opportunity to serve. So many of the people we work with are selling products, or holding events, for charity. Our readers are truly some of the most civic-minded and giving people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. The “Blue Mountain Blowout” event back in September was a perfect example of this DISCLAIMER: This issue contains photo image content that may be controversial and graphic to some readers (page 45.)

charitable spirit. Over the course of a few hours we raised hundreds of dollars and collected over 225 pounds of food for the NL Food Bank. Who says that neighbors don’t look out for one another anymore? That’s what I’m Thankful for this year, the wonderful community that supports the Gazette and, most importantly, each other. Below I’ve included an article sent to me by Reverend Roger Rinker, of Lehigh Township, who takes the idea of charity and helping one’s neighbors global with his Operation: A Vision ministry. Rev. Rinker and other missionaries travel to impoverished nations and help the poor in any way that they can. Rev. Rinker can be reached at rink6@juno.com.

Haiti 2012 Continued from Page 3 victims in Fond Paresien, Haiti on my last mission trip, I did not hesitate when I received an invitation to return. The project this time was to help build a new marketplace. The marketplace’s importance cannot be overstated. The families living in Fond Paresien currently have nowhere to sell any crops they grow, cattle they’ve raised, or products they’ve made. It is also a place where people can start a business and ultimately give employment to hundreds of impoverished people. The mission was accomplished, in spite of Super Storm Sandy, which pounded the area, dumped more than 20 inches of rain in one day and completely cut off the Love A Child Mission headquarters where I was staying for several days. During the six weeks I was there, myself and another person cleared 16-acres of land that was previously covered in pecan trees (not the nutbearing kind, pecan in Creole means “sticker” or “thorny”) and cactuses, dug drainage ditches and built roads so that the market would be accessible. The roots of the trees we were excavating are extremely valuable. The hardwood, if processed properly, will create some of the most expensive charcoal available. Because of this, the locals all wanted to be the first to lay their hands on a precious stump. They would actually jump in front of the bulldozer I was operating to claim their prize. Of course, when more than one person thought a stump was rightfully theirs a dispute would arise. Did I mention that nearly all of the Haitians, young and old, male and female alike, were carrying machetes that when not being used to chop wood could make very effective weapons? One day, a deaf woman had an altercation with a very possessive man who also laid claim to a large stump I had just uncovered. A tug-of-war erupted, with the woman’s young daughter coming to her

Page 11

mother’s aid. The man became aggressive with the young girl, causing the mother to become very defensive. She placed her daughter in the midst of a circle she drew on the ground with a machete and threatened the man with the sharp bladed weapon, daring him to cross the line. Knowing that she clearly meant business, he walked away defeated and stump-less. It really made me think about how far you would go to protect a loved one. During my time in Haiti, which I will carry with me forever, I faced many challenges: crossing temporary bridges that had been heavily damaged by the hurricane, riding in taxis through floodwater that poured in through the doors and nearly covered the hood while trying to catch the once-a-week flight from Port Au Prince to New York City. I was sprayed with hot hydraulic oil when a line on the dozer broke. We had to brave the streets of the capitol city during a riot while we transported an orphan to the airport so she could get life saving heart surgery in NYC. The citizens of Port Au Prince were rioting for food, building roadblocks, and throwing burning tires into the street but we still managed to get her to the airport. Even with tragedy all around us, some light always comes out of the darkness. God is still in control.

Joke Corner

A man buys a parrot, only to have it constantly insult him. He tries everything to make the parrot stop, but nothing works. Frustrated, the man puts the parrot in the freezer. After a few minutes the insults stop. The man thinks he might have killed the parrot, so he opens the freezer and takes the parrot out. The parrot is shivering. It stammers, “S-s-sorry for being r-r-rude. Please f-f-forgive me.”Then, after a moment, the parrot softly asks, “W-w-what exactly d-d-did the turkey do?”

Santa Is Making Time From His Busy Schedule On December 3 through December 6 from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m., Santa will take a work break to say hello and/or write a letter to your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and any other child who might like to hear from him. Because Santa can’t possibly call and write to everyone in the world in that short period of time (he needs to save his strength to travel the world on Christmas Eve), Santa has asked the teams of the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Whitehall to help him prepare his schedule. To say thank you to the American Cancer Society‘s Relay For Life teams, Santa will donate $7.00 for each call he makes, $6.00 for each letter he writes, and $10.00 for both a call and a letter. Santa has prepared a form for you to fill out. This can be found on Shari Noctor’s, Whitehall Relay Event, website at www.sharinoctor.com. Whitehall teams already registered can be found by visiting www.relayforlife.org/pawhitehall. SMany parents have commented that their children were so excited that Santa took time from his busy schedule to call or write them. Santa always reminds kids to be good all year!!! Also, Santa is looking for men to assist the Cancer Society. If you are interested in helping,

or if you have any questions, please contact Shari Noctor at 610-2665241 or Lauren Seneca at the American Cancer Society at 610-921-2329 ext 3006. 700 N. First St. Lehighton, PA 18235 610-377-9777 www.customer1auto.com

Record-setting Golden Eagle Migration at Bake Oven Knob Superstorm Sandy brought a path of destruction to the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. But this natural event also brought an unprecedented migration phenomenon to the Bake Oven Knob Autumn Hawk Count. While no one is celebrating the storm, the hawk counters did record an amazing natural event. Veteran hawkwatchers know that storms often “bottle up” the birds for a few days, and those storms are often followed by excellent migration counts. In addition, large storms also divert raptors from their normal migration routes. In the case of Sandy, both of these effects probably combined to influence migration counts for almost a week following the storm. The most notable species to be affected by the storm was the Golden Eagle. When Hawk Mountain’s Maurice Broun reported seeing Golden Eagles migrating along the Kittatinny Ridge, many naturalists refused to believe him until they visited Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and saw them with their own eyes. In the past ten years, an average of 92 of these magnificent birds were counted at Bake Oven Knob. But in five days from November 1 to November 5, 121 Golden Eagles were counted. So far in 2011, 142 Goldens

have been counted, surpassing the previous record count of 137 in 2003, with more than three weeks left in the count season. Eastern Golden Eagles breed mostly in the tundra regions of Canada around Hudson Bay and to the east. They migrate south through Pennsylvania and spend the winter foraging in the Appalachians and surrounding areas. This population is small compared to the western population of Aquilla chrysaetos, as the bird is known by its scientific name. The Golden Eagle also occurs in Europe. To understand the incredible nature of this fiveday flight, consider that in 52 years of autumn hawk counts at Bake Oven Knob, the total number of Goldens for the season only surpassed the 121 total from these five days two times – in 2003 and 2006. The one-day total of 42 birds on November 3, exceeded the annual total for 35 of the years for Continued on Page 19

Golden Eagles Continued from Page 18 the count, which began in 1961. Golden Eagles were not the only migrants seen in larger than normal numbers. Only once in the past 30 years (in 2006) have this many Redshouldered Hawks been seen in a five-day period. Red-tailed Hawks have been seen in low numbers in the past four years, but put on a strong showing in this period, with more than 1300 of the common raptors counted. And 25 Bald Eagles made their way past the ridge over this five-day period, each one a recordsetting bird, as the Bald Eagle season record was surpassed on October 17. A total of 277 Bald Eagles have been counted migrating past Bake Oven Knob already this season. It is not too late to catch the migration along the Kittatinny in 2012. An intern or volunteers will remain on duty at Bake Oven Knob until November 25 and Hawk Mountain counts until December 15, but the migration often slows considerably after mid-November. Look for a day with moderate winds and head to the ridge with your binoculars to catch the tail end of this natural phenomenon which occurs each year along the Kittatinny ridge, right here in the Lehigh Valley.

Senior Citizens Corner Storm Damage? Don’t fall for Rip-off Repairs In the aftermath of Sandy, comes “storm chasers,” aka rip-off repair people, who descend on areas after a natural disaster looking to scam those in need of home repairs.
Homeowners facing major repairs following Hurricane Sandy should be on alert for scam artists hoping to prey on older adults. AARP Pennsylvania wants to alert people about common contractor scams during a time when members may be most vulnerable. First, check with your insurance company to see what your policy covers. Save all receipts, including those for food, hotel or other expenses that may be covered under your policy. Before doing any major repair, get at least three estimates, making sure the contractor is licensed and insured to do business in your area. Never hire a contractor on the spot. Be suspicious of door-to-door salesmen using high pressure tactics, especially those who show up without an appointment and offer to do the job. Check out repair companies by looking for consumer reviews on the BBB website and on social media sites such as Yelp or Angie’s list.
AARP Pennsylvania also recommends that you avoid the paperless contractor. Reject anyone who has no

business card or company fliers (or who lists a P.O. Box instead of a street address). This will assist in your vetting process. It is also best to make sure to get a written contract, specifying what work will be done, the materials that will be used and the price breakdown for labor and materials. Any promises made verbally should be written into the contract, including warranties. Also, make sure you have time to read the contract fully.
Lastly, never pay in advance — or in cash. While some companies may ask for a deposit, consumer advocates suggest paying no more than one-third of the job in advance. Deposits or upfront fees should not exceed 25 percent of the estimate. Pay them only after materials reach your home and work begins.
Problems with home improvement consistently rank among the top five complaints by the PA Office of Attorney General. That’s why AARP pushed to win approval of the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act in 2008 that requires contractors performing $5,000 of home improvements per year to register with the Attorney General’s Office. Consumers can find out if contractors are registered with the state by visiting the Attorney General’s website or calling toll free 1-888-520-6680

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

Peng and Pham lead Parkland to Prominence

Winning 66 straight contests in any sports is a daunting task. However, that was achieved by Parkland’s girls’ tennis team after they finished their 2012 regular season with an 11-0 record. That brought Parkland to 66-0 over the last six seasons in

Lehigh Valley Conference play. First year head coach, George Grim, came in to a very successful program at Parkland and had the job of ensuring that the victories would keep mounting for the Trojans. To assist Grim in completing that task were two stellar junior tennis players, Jenna Peng and TuQueyen Pham. Both of whom were leaders for this team as they led by example out on the court during every match. Peng did not lose one singles match until she faced Brittany Pajoe from East Stroudsburg South in the District 11 AAA singles championship. Pajoe ousted Peng, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Peng and Pham were also doubles partners on occasion and together they won the District 11 AAA doubles championship by defeating Ashley Jones and Jess Wain of Bangor, 6-1, 6-2. The duo took their D-11 title and headed into the state tournament to face off against Sarah Sambrick and Savannah Burton of Lampeter-Strasburg. The top two Trojans took that match 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and also advanced to the quarterfinals where they would meet Molly Blair and Amirah Salim of Abington Heights. Unfortunately, that was the end of the road for Peng and Pham as they were defeated by Blair and Salim in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-3. Peng and Pham weren’t the only great doubles teams for Parkland. Grim expressed to me his happiness with the others too,“Our second and third doubles teams went undefeated during the regular

season. That really shows how strong and how much depth we have.” Grim is very happy with the success of his girls as a team this year as well. He told me last week in a phone interview that he knew had a winner, “I certainly looked at what happened last year and quickly surmised that I had a great team. What really made it a successful season was having the depth that we had.” Grim told me that his team wasn’t even challenged until the postseason tournaments. After capping off that undefeated regular season, the lady Trojans charged in to the LVC tournament as the top seed and won gold in four of the six matches. The success continued in to the district tournament where Parkland knocked off Southern Lehigh, Northampton and East Stroudsburg South on their road to a District 11 AAA team championship. The team season ended for Parkland in the first round of the state tournament as they lost to Harriton, 3-0. The lady Trojans have become accustomed to success on the courts, but aren’t happy quite yet. They want to continue that incredible winning streak and also collect a few more accolades, especially on the state level. There are a lot of talented tennis players in Pennsylvania, but with the dominating team that Parkland has, expect big things from them in 2013. extrapoint@townandcountrygazette.com @extrapoint_TCG Town & Country Gazette on Facebook

Lehigh Twsp. Historical Society Receives Visitors from Canada

Recently, Dr. Marcia Falconer, a resident of Canada, presented 3 binders of tax lists of Lehigh Township for the years, 1761 to 1789, to LT Historical Society. She and her sister, Ardis Grosjean, of Sweden, are members of LT Historical Society. They researched family history and traveled to Germany to gather information for a book they will be publishing in the near future. Marcia and Ardis are descendants of the Dreisbach family, and if anyone remembers the history of Lehigh Township, the Dreisbachs were the very early settlers in Lehigh Township. Simon Dreisbach and his family settled in the

Pennsville area near Cedar Drive. Dr. Falconer researched all of the information at various sites and it is probably the most complete tax listing available for Lehigh Township from 1761 to 1789. In some cases, the tax lists contain much more than tax information. There is information which included total acreage, cultivated acres, number of horses, cows and sheep, grist mills, oil mills, servants, negroes and trades. These records will be useful to anyone doing genealogy or historical research and will be preserved by the historical society. Interested visitors are welcome to examine these old records. The society is grateful for this contribution of information, which will be on hand with other memorabilia in the historical centre in Pennsville. December 2 and 9 will be Holiday Open House dates for the LT Historical Society at the historical centre in Pennsville. The historical centre will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on both Sundays for visitors and shoppers. There are many unique gifts available such as a DVD video, books, maps, ornaments, shirts, and more for that special someone. Think about the historical society when Continued on Page 39

New License Plates Available for Decorated Military Personnel, Veterans Members and veterans of the United States Armed Forces decorated for valor or meritorious service during a time of armed conflict can now proudly display their medal through a new series of military license plates offered by PennDOT. “Members of our armed forces who have received these medals have proven their commitment to their fellow service men and women and to protecting our freedom under the worst of circumstances,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. “PennDOT is proud to recognize them once more and give them an opportunity to publicly display their distinguished honors.” PennDOT’s new series of plates offers a design exhibiting one of the following military decorations: Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star for Valor and Bronze Star. Veterans and military personnel interested in these new plates can visit PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website, www.dmv.state.pa.us, and select the “Military License Plates” link under the “Military Personnel/Veterans” Information Center for a complete listing of available military license plates. The page provides images of each

plate and links to the appropriate application form. In addition to these plates, PennDOT’s Specialty Plate Program offers a variety of license plates including those honoring individuals who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and in major conflicts from World War II to Operation Enduring Freedom. The majority of military license plates can be requested by filling out Form MV-150,“Application for U.S. Military Veteran Registration Plate,” which also contains instructions for applying for the plates and the respective fees. Specialty license plates are also offered for active-duty and reserve military personnel and members of service-related organizations. A link to the listing of these license plates is also on the Military License Plates Web page, and applications must be requested through the approved organization’s local representative.

A Touch of Dutch 15 Nowember, 1956 Die letscht Woch hen mer gfrogt, wie mer „Schpetzelcher“ macht. Die eensichtscht Fraa, as uns rausgholfe hot so weit, waar die Mrs. Robert Weiss. Sie hot mer zwee Reseede gewwe. Die Eent saagt fer’n Deeg mache vun zwee Koppcher Mehl, ee Driddel Teeleffel Saltz, ee Oi, drei Vaddel Koppcher Wasser. Des iss en Deeg baut wie nudel Deeg; soll der Deeg verschneide in gleene Schticker un in kochich Wasser duh. Es erscht gehne sie uff der Boddem vum Kessel. [Sauergraut mit Nudle? Hen ihr seilewe sell ghatt? In meinre Familye waar es immer gemaeschde Grummbeere mit em Sauergraut, nie ken Nudle. Wann ihr wisst ebbes devun, seid so gut un losst uns wisse.] November 15, 1956 Last week we asked how one made ‘Schpetzelcher’. The only woman that helped me out so far was Mrs. Robert Weiss. She gave me two recipes. The first says to make the dough from two cups of flour, a third teaspoon of salt, one egg and three quarters cup of water. This is dough similar to noodle dough; it should be cut in little pieces and put in boiling water. At first the noodles will sink to the bottom of the pot. When they rise and swim on the surface, they are done, and one should then use a spoon that has holes in it to retrieve them from the water. Next melt butter and pour over the noodles. Also if one rinses the noodles with warm water after taking them out of the pot, they won’t stick together. The second recipe is a little different. Beat five eggs really good and stir in enough flour to make dough. Cut the dough in strips and put them in boiling water just like the other recipe instructed. The noodles should be especially good with sauerkraut. [Sauerkraut with noodles? Did any of you ever have that? In my family it was always mashed potatoes with sauerkraut, never noodles. If you know anything about the noodles and sauerkraut, please let us know.]

A Long Flight Home: Back to America By Christine Zopf On July 3, I woke up to find my room cleaner than the night before. My roommates, Rachel and Chloe, looked like zombies as they stumbled around the room getting their things together at the last minute. As a team we took our bedding to be washed, emptied our trash, and left the room almost as it was when we arrived. All was in place except the picture we had taken from my brother Philip's room for decoration. After gathering in the lobby, the GAPP students

boarded a bus that would take us to Munich's airport. We quickly went through security before waiting for our plane at the gate. Most of us sat in near silence, listening to music or just waiting patiently. The realization that we were really leaving happened when the plane was taking off. We made ourselves comfortable and switched seats so we could be close to our friends. I took a window seat. I wanted to see what the ground looked like from 30,000 feet. The plane ride home was almost two hours longer than the ride to Germany. This normally wouldn't have bothered me, but I had a throbbing migraine and my compartment of the plane had four infant passengers. They cried for the entire eight hours, and no amount of Advil could alleviate my headache. It got to the point where when one baby would start to cry, I almost cried. The plane ride dragged out, and I tried to drown out the sound of infants screaming with movies and music. When our plane finally touched down in Newark, I was relieved. We made our way through customs, and out of all twenty-seven of us, my brother was the only one who needed his bags searched. Our bus was waiting out front to take us home, a short drive compared to the ones we

A Long Flight Home: Back to America had taken in Germany. Since I didn't have my phone, I used my friend Steph's phone to text my mom, telling her how long until we arrived in Northampton, and to bring Foxy, my dog, to the school when they picked us up. As the bus pulled up in front of the high school I looked around the parking lot, searching for my parent's car. It wasn't there. I can't say I was surprised, we arrived five minutes earlier than we expected, and my parents are the type of people to be right on time. When they did pull up, I saw my dog, with her head out the window, waiting for us. My family and I embraced, and the car ride home was full of questions about the trip. Although it was 3 a.m. German time, I wasn't as tired as I had expected to be. Over the next few days I tried to get back into the swing of American life. The biggest challenge I faced was readjusting to the time difference. By 5 p.m. I would be ready to go to bed, but I forced myself to stay awake. I also had to readjust to working. For three weeks, I hadn't taken a single order, but I quickly learned I hadn't forgotten anything while I was gone. After a few days I had completely readjusted to American life. It was as though I had never been gone.

Looking back on my time in Germany, I believe I made the most of it. I took every opportunity and although at times I missed things about America, I never once felt overwhelmed by the German culture or language. If anything, I became caught up in it, and embraced it as my own. The GAPP program has given me so much: fond memories, new friendships, and a more open mind to new things. One day I hope I make it back to Germany, whether it be a vacation or an extended stay as a resident. For as long as I live, I will always have a special place in my heart for the German family who took me in, and a small town called Gladenbach. So readers, our journey together has come to a close. I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have. Maybe I've even inspired you to take a tour of Germany yourself. If so, I wish you the best of luck and happy travels, and if not, well, maybe someday. So that's all for now and until we meet again, Auf Wiedersehen!

LTAA Garcia Award By Tyler Trumbauer While most of the Lehigh Valley was recovering from Superstorm Sandy the Lehigh Township Athletic Association’s U-10 A girls’ soccer team was busy working on capping off their unforgettable season.
