It’ll be fall and the Gathering in Slatington in no time if the summer keeps slipping by like it’s been. success with $6,300 raised in sales and donations. The entire donation will be used to help pay for funeral costs. Ritchie, from Coaldale, along with his nana Wanda Wentz, 49 of Lehighton tragically lost their lives in a drowning accident last month. Thank you to everyone who helped and supported the family, especially Dakota Miller for making it all happen.

Basket Raffle for Nolan Raises $6,000
The Blue Mt. Community came together in an outpour of love and compassion for Tiffany Ritchie and her family following the tragic death of her seven year old son and her mother. A basket raffle and bake sale in memory of Nolan Ritchie and his grandmother Wanda Wentz was held on July 7 and July 8 at Northwest Children’s Center in New Tripoli. Business owners and members of the community donated baskets filled with items for the raffle and in under two weeks, over 160 baskets were collected. The basket raffle and bake sale were a

4th of July Bash
Woodstone Country Club and Lodge hosted their annual 4th of July Bash on July 6th. The event was full of live entertainment, games for the kids and adults, hot air balloon rides, great food and a fantastic fireworks show. The celebration went well into the evening following one of the best firework shows in the area.

What is it about a cold milkshake on a hot summer night that makes you feel like a kid again? I love ice cream and therefore love milkshakes! I love chocolate, mint, coffee flavored and strawberry but by far my favorite milkshake is a simple vanilla, extra thick. If I am at home I use this recipe (courtesy of PaulaDeen.com) to blend up a good ol' fashion vanilla milkshake. Makes 4 servings. Ingredients: 8 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 4 cups vanilla ice cream, 2 cups milk, less for thicker milkshakes Directions: Using a blender or milkshake machine, blend all ingredients together until smooth. Serve in tall glasses with a straw.

The Ice Cream Lab wins our 2012 Reader’s Poll 2012

The cavalcade of votes has been totaled and our readers have chosen their favorite local business that specializes in cool treats in our 2nd Annual Coolest Treat contest. The Ice Cream Lab, located at 350 S. Best Ave in Walnutport, edged out the competition this year to take the prize. Ice Cream lab proprietors Tim & Wendy Pitts have owned the business since 1993, when they bought Ice Cream World and redesigned it to their vision. The Pitts were big fans of the original business and didn’t want to pass up an opportunity when Ice Cream World went up for sale. “We were some of the best customers there, and then the place went up for sale. We just wanted free ice cream,”Tim joked. Tim and Wendy wanted to combine the fun of ice cream with education and began to hold classes in the “lab” side of their ice cream parlor. The Ice Cream lab hosts educational sessions, with different packages available for field trips, including sessions on things like the history of ice cream and origins of certain delicious dairy creations. All of the Ice Cream Lab’s “Technicians” that work field trips and birthday parties are certified teachers. “We’re blending education and entertainment around America’s favorite dessert,” Wendy explained. The Ice Cream Lab is constantly coming up with new and interactive Ice Cream activities including a “Creation Station” on weekend evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. where both adults and children can make their own ice cream treats. They also have a reading program during the week and lots of other activities throughout their year-round schedule. The Ice Cream Lab’s popularity with locals is no surprise given the quality ingredients that make their products stand out. According to Tim, they are one of the few local ice cream places that make their own ice cream from scratch. “The secret to good ice cream is the butter fat content, ours is 14 – 16%, which really means we have gourmet ice cream,” Tim said. Their ice cream, ice cream sandwiches, and all their other products, including their popular ice cream cakes, are all made in house. The next step in their continuing evolution is going to be the addition of a healthier, gelato based product, not to be confused with the inferior similarly named product from a wellknown franchise. This low-fat option is made by being slow churned with ingredients that will be imported from Italy. So, keep an eye out for that and all the other delicious cool treats that Tim, Wendy and their staff will be coming up with in the future.

Night In the Country Scheduled for August 18
The Northwestern Recreation Commission is hosting their 14th annual "Night in the Country" on Saturday, August 18, 2012 from 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm. Rain date is Sunday August 19. Fun is planned for all. A live country band, huge car cruise, DJ, Chinese auction, bingo, etc., plus great food and activities. To end the evening, a fireworks display is planned. Suggested admission donation is $3 for adults and $2 for children under 12. Any group interested in participating is asked to contact Janice Bortz. It is really nice to see the community organizations participate in this event; and a fun way to earn a little extra money for your favorite group. to training at an actual police training school. The camp programs are focused on discipline and teamwork and offer the cadets training and instruction in the law enforcement field. This includes self-defense, firearms, marching, physical fitness, usage of the helicopters by the State Police and Med-Evac from the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, FBI, Untied States Secret Service, County Sheriff Dept and Canine demonstrations. It was a week filled with excitement for the cadets.

On June 17th local teens attended Camp Cadet in Orefield. Camp Cadet is a weeklong summer camp for boys and girls between the ages of 12-14 who are interested in learning about law enforcement. Pinecastle recording artist Nu-Blu will perform at The Lehigh Valley Bluegrass Festival, located at 4550 Old Packhouse Rd, Schnecksville on July 21 & 22. The festival begins at 10am. Also performing, Dan Paisley, Darren Beachley, Carrol County Ramblers, and many more. Through the years, Nu-Blu has worked hard to develop a group that would give the listener a diverse experience. By mixing their original songs along with traditional material, and even incorporating songs from other genres, the group has certainly created a unique and driving blend of music that keeps audiences coming back for more. Nu-Blu was founded by husband and wife team, Carolyn and Daniel Routh. Carolyn, on bass, provides her trademark lead vocals with impressive clarity and vocal range and Daniel, on guitar, brings his songwriting and vocal talents to the group. The two young guns, Levi Austin (banjo and vocals) and Austin Koerner (mandolin) fill out the ranks providing the band with a solid and talented backbone. In May 2010, Nu-Blu released their first album, NIGHTS, along with the single, “Spin on the Red Brick Floor.” Radio immediately welcomed the album as evidenced by its debut at #10 on the Euro Americana Chart, reaching as high as #7 on the Roots Music Bluegrass Report, and spending more than 5 weeks on the Americana Music Association’s Top 40 chart as an indie release. Several months later, the band was awarded the “2010 Country Band of the Year” by the Carolina Music Awards. Blue Jeans & Country Dreams The 13th annual Carbon County Fair located on Little Gap Road, will run Tuesday, August 7 thru Saturday, August 11. Fair hours are 3 to 11 p.m. Tuesday thru Friday and 12 noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday. The fair offers an alternative to a costly family vacation. This year’s fair theme is “Blue Jeans & Country Dreams.” There are five days of fun for everyone! The agricultural fair is open rain or shine. CHIP Program announced In Palmerton Park
Lehighton Lodge #621 Free & Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania and the Community Services Committee of the Carbon County Association of Realtor's have announced a joint project creating a Kids Fair in the Palmerton Community Park on Saturday, August 4th, 2012, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. This event is centered around the safety of the children in communities throughout Carbon County. The goal is to have a day filled with programs, informational displays and short seminars that will provide valuable information that will hopefully help keep children safe and provide them with safety tips that will help them make good decisions when they are in questionable situations. The highlight of the day will be a CHILD ID PROGRAM (CHIP); when parents will be given an Amber Alert System compatible CD-ROM of the digital information collected. (Supplies are limited, so you may want to arrive early and complete the registration process.) In the event that your child should ever become missing or separated from you, the Masonic CHIP "Purple Packet" gives law enforcement and recovery officials essential materials to help find your child. All identifying materials generated during a Masonic CHIP event are given to the child's family. The program is free of charge to participating parents, as a result of generous public and private donations. In conjunction with this Kids Fair, the Realty Association will hold a community yard sale.

NOVA Strong with Community Support Members of the Board of Directors of Northern Valley EMS [NOVA] held a round table providing financial and operations updates to the municipalities and counties in its coverage area as well as the State of Pennsylvania and the Federal Government. NOVA, a non profit ambulance corps, covers a broad area including Washington Township, North Whitehall Township, the Borough of Slatington, the Borough of Walnutport, and parts of Lowhill Township. United States Senator Charles Dent attended the discussion personally and representatives from the offices of Julie Harhart, Robert Casey and Pat Toomey participated in the discussions along with representatives from Washington Township, North Whitehall Township, and the Borough of Slatington. The round table featured input from members of the Lehigh County Emergency Management Agency, the Lehigh County Ambulance Association and the Eastern Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Services Council. NOVA is advocating 2 Federal bills. One is the MAAPA Bill (S. 424, H.R. 1005) to increase funding from Medicare and the second is the Public Safety Officers' Benefits Improvements Act of 2011 (S.
1696, H.R. 4018) to provide compensation to EMS personnel killed or disabled in the line of duty. An additional bill from the State of PA is HB 1344. HB 1344 will mandate insurance companies to pay directly to the EMS service and not the patient. The Bill passed the House 197-0 resting in the State Senate with an unpredictable future. Throughout the State of Pennsylvania ambulance corps are experiencing shortages in staffing of trained and experienced emergency personnel, decreased compensation from insurance companies, Medicare, and Medicaid, increased operations costs, and the need to increase salaries to compensate for the cost of living. In many cases these circumstances are leading to financial difficulties which result in sudden stoppage of operations until financial breakdowns are rectified typically from outside sources such as local municipalities and private enterprise. In the midst of these growing concerns NOVA was happy to report financial stability. Coming back to my Roots Today some people say we must come back to our roots. Now, we know that people do not have roots like trees or plants. Our roots, that gave us life, are our elders and forefathers. Then to what must we come back? They mean that we must come back to our elder’s values. And I will say to you that it also means more to me, and that is what I’ll try to explain here. My wife and I were married in 1976. Four years later we moved into a new home in Lower Nazareth Township. Later I became curious concerning who my ancestors were and where they had lived. The court records and the church registers were looked into and the local histories of that area were read. And what did I find? For one, our house and our neighbor’s houses were naturally built on the fields of a very old farm. That farm was first a part of the Penn family’s Dryland Manor, which was larger than 12,000 acres. The Penn’s hired a surveyor, William Parsons, and he laid out many farms on that manor and the majority he brought in to work them was Pennsylvania German farmers. He said that the Dutch are hard working people and they can get by with little in life. The Dutch were just tenant farmers, but they created really nice farms out of nothing. The first tenant farmer on the land where my neighbors and I now live was Nicholas Schall, a direct ancestor on my dad’s side. He moved here in 1758, after his first farm was burned down in the French and Indian War. Before the 19th century commenced, the Penns sold all the farms on their manor to the tenant farmers. If the farmer who owned this land in about 1850, walked across the wagon lane that ran along his property, his neighbors at the next farm would be Daniel and Anna Maria Schortz. Mary was an older sister of Daniel Gradwohl, a second great grandfather to me. Yes, I can say I returned to my roots, to the land where my forefathers lived and where they earned their living.

Do you ever wonder what life was like years ago or wonder how things were done years ago? Well, you don't have to go farther than Pennsville to find out. You can find vacuum cleaners from the

early 1900s and irons that were not electric. You will find old toys, tools, books and most recently, a handcrafted wooden lathe was donated to the society which would be of particular interest to the men. These are just a few items from years ago that are on display at the Lehigh Township Historical Centre , off Route 248 in Pennsville. The memorabilia at the historical centre would be of interest to the whole family. If you have not visited the centre, plan to do so sometime soon. The historical centre is open on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, from 1 to 4 p.m. for visitors or by appointment. Plan to visit the centre in air-conditioned comfort and learn about the past. Monthly meetings are held on the second Monday of each month, at 7 p.m., in the rear of the historical centre. Everyone interested in LT history is welcome. The society members are selling tickets for takeout dinners made by Lorah's Roasters.. Purchase your ticket now for a chicken dinner on Saturday, July 28. Dinners consist of: 1/2 chicken, baked potato, applesauce, roll. Dinners can be picked up at Indian Trail Park, pavilion #1, on the 28th, from noon to 5 p.m. A limited number of dinners will be sold that day without advance tickets. Under pavilion #1, there are tables and benches and you are welcome to eat your dinner at the pavilion. Join your friends in the cool shade of the trees at the pavilion to eat your meal. Congratulations Kevin Kromer on Your Victory! The Super Cup Stock Car Series made its annual visit to Motordrome Speedway with Jody The Hurricane Harrison setting the fastest time in qualifying. In the 50-lap feature, which was completed with only one caution flag, Walnutport, PA resident Kevin Kromer used an engine borrowed from previous event winner Todd Peck. As one of only a few Keystone State drivers on the tour, Kromer drove to victory in his home state, defeating a field of drivers from WV, IN, VA, and NY. Kromer also grabbed bonus points for leading at the halfway point and for leading the most laps. Series standings leader Harvey Harrison finished second, with Jody Harrison third, Indiana Late Model legend Jim Crabtree fourth, and his son, rookie J.P. Crabtree fifth.

Writing is a way to express yourself. People blog, keep journals and diaries, have pen pals or write as a career. I plan to do this for the rest of my life. Writing and journalism means so much to me. It gives me a way to let my thoughts out on paper. My opinions and style gets portrayed eloquently in words for others to read. The euphoria I feel when I get complimented for my writing is just too powerful to not keep writing forever. My love for writing; sports writing in particular is the reason why I love and am so gracious for the opportunity I got here at the Town & Country Gazette. More than one year ago I approached the Gazette proposing the idea of me penning a local sports column that publishes occasionally. Alice Wanamaker, an associate publisher for Innovative Designs & Publishing, the parent company of the Town & Country Gazette, seemed intrigued by the idea and invited me to the offices for a meeting with her and the editor of the Gazette, Joe Korba. The meeting went fabulous and we all knew that this could possibly be great for not only a young writer like me, but also for the Gazette as readers have been without a sport column for some time. It started out printing just once a month. Then it expanded to writing a column for every issue. The Gazette increased my passion for sports writing which lead me to enter another writing endeavor at the beginning of this calendar year. In January of 2012 I became a member of the Fansided family as I was hired as a staff writer for the Philadelphia sports blog, Section 215. Section 215 is a total Philadelphia sports blog where we discuss everything from the Phillies to the Union. I began my tenure there as the Eagles and Phillies writer and put countless hours of research and writing in to my posts to increase our views and

build an up and coming sports blog. All that I poured in to that blog has paid off as in May I made an appearance on the local sports talk radio station, 1470AM The Fox. I was on air for one hour on the drive-home show, After Further Review, with Bob Holder and Jeff Warner, talking about the Phillies and the Eagles and it was a great experience for a young sports journalist like myself. Also, another great reward of my hard work is my promotion at Section 215 from staff writer to Editor-in-Chief that will go through this week. That new position will enhance my writing career. I wanted to take time to express my gratitude to everyone in my life that has boosted my writing career at such a young age. My biggest thank you’s go out to Joe and Alice for giving a motivated 15 year old a chance to get experience covering sports and giving me freedoms with my columns. I want to also say thanks to Frank Higgins, the current Editor-in-Chief of Section 215 and the man that hired me as a staff writer. Frank taught me all about sports blogging and how to generate some buzz with my online writing. Viral stories are very important as the future of journalism is more online based than paper based. To wrap it up, I just want to say thank you to you, my readers, for being so nice. I have received so many compliments from acquaintances about my columns. Brad and Hope share the love of motorcycles and passed it to their son Jr. who helped them open the shop and works with them today. Brad Jr. has two kids, a ten year old daughter Shelby who has already made two trips to Florida on back of a bike and the newest member of the Reiss family, Bodie who was born earlier this year and will be riding in the near future. History: Brad was born a biker and he always wanted to open his own shop. In the summer of 1993 Brad, Hope and their ten year old son moved to Florida while Brad attended the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI). He graduated on June 6, 1994 and four days later they were back in PA to start the family business. Reiss Cycle originally operated out of their 20 X 20 garage. It took just over a year for the business to outgrow the location and they moved into their current location on Route 248 in July of 1995. Since then, the building has been expanded four times, including the latest addition of the showroom. Brad, Hope and their son Jr. were there at the beginning and continue to work together

Miller-Keystone Blood Center Issues Call For Donors
Miller-Keystone Blood Center has issued a call for blood donors of all blood types. “While all blood types are needed at this time, we are critically in need of O-positive and O-negative donations,” says Joseph Yelo, Vice President of Administration, confirming that hospital blood usage escalated significantly over the holiday weekend. “Over the past 5 days, our regional hospitals have required approximately 1,200 units of blood to treat the victims of several critical accidents,” Yelo explains. “However, only 685 units of blood have been donated during this time. This has caused our community blood inventory to drop to critical levels. We are asking all eligible donors to schedule an appointment today.” As the only blood supplier to our regional hospitals, he notes, the Blood Center needs approximately 500 blood donors to walk through its doors every day, in order to meet patient needs. These blood products are required to care for premature infants, accident or burn victims, surgical patients, or individuals undergoing

chemotherapy. Donating blood is completely safe and easy, and takes less than one hour. In order to donate, individuals must be 17 years of age or older, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in general good health; they must not have donated in the past eight weeks. 5th Annual Trout Creek Trot Announced
The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission’s 5th Annual Trot Creek Trot 5K Run and Walk will be held on Saturday August 18, 2012. The course is mostly on the Slatington portion of the Slate Heritage Trail, and begins at 9am. Registration and check-in begins at 8am. The city of Buffalo, New York, is an old working class rust belt town that some may say has seen better days. However, something great was born there that changed the face of junk food forever. It is sometimes disputed, but most connoisseurs of fried and spicy deliciousness agree that the Buffalo Wing was spawned when the owner of the Anchor Bar, Teressa Bellissimo, concocted a dish from left over chicken wings, fried after being marinated in a buttered chili sauce, and served with blue cheese dressing and celery. That was way back in 1964. The wings were an instant hit and soon caught on nationwide. Since that fateful

The Amazing Spider-Man is a solid addition to the Marvel Comic Book Movie canon. Ted – (Dir. Seth MacFarlane. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis) C: The first directorial effort by the creator of Family Guy is pretty much exactly what you’d expect. The plot is loosely developed and the jokes are random and mostly based around a cursing teddy bear and lowhanging fruit pop culture targets. The story, or what passes for one, is about the character played by Mark Wahlberg’s seemingly inability to grow up and get serious with his long-time girlfriend played by Mila Kunis. Both Kunis and Wahlberg are game and have good comedic timing and play a couple that is fairly believable given the circumstances of having a drunken, stoned, hedonistic anthropomorphic stuffed bear living with them. It’s a funny, occasionally hilarious, but ultimately forgettable summer popcorn flick.

Celebrating 40 years in Business Carl Grega opened Carl’s Service Center in 1972 in the former Lentz’s Garage, located at Route 873 and Old Post Road in Washington Township. The garage was built in the mid 1930’s and was owned and operated by Dewey Lentz from that time until 1972. Carl opened for business in July of that year as a full service gas station and auto repair shop. In the 90’s, Carl Jr. joined his fathers business. By that time, the gas pumps were gone and the garage became a state of the art diagnostic center. Mallory Bomboy Continued from Page 64 presented a $500 gift to a “Softball family” from Schnecksville, who recently lost their husband and father to a car accident. He also distributed $1,000 to Hokey Playground to help them prevent flooding on one of their 4 fields. Salisbury Softball also received $2,000 to help them with field improvements. The committee also distributed $2,500 back to the Bomboy family scholarship. Seven Parkland League 18 & Under seniors were given scholarships at the 18 & Under All-Star game on June 30th to continue their learning at various colleges and universities. The committee also gave MVP plaques to girls in all nine of the Parkland League Championships held on June 24th.
