Welcome back! We will be slowly opening back up to the public. Patrons will be allowed in to select books and movies. There will be limited use of the computers. Library hours are still shortened, Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9-5,

Tuesday 9-3 and Sat. 8-Noon. FACE MASKS MUST BE WORN. Thank you to everyone who has responded to our annual mailing. We encourage those who have not to consider a donation to the Slatington Public Library. All donations are greatly appreciated and needed.

Northern Lehigh Rec. Presents First Wednesday UnWind at Slatington Trailhead Kendal Conrad and Sleepy Cat Urban Winery will be featured at Northern Lehigh Rec.’s first Wednesday UnWind at the D& L Slatington Trailhead on Wednesday, July 15th.

From 6:00 until 8:00 pm people will be able to sample some of Sleepy Cat’s popular wines while listening to the music of local favorite, singersongwriter Kendal Conrad. There is a small fee for the tasting, which is waived if a bottle is purchased.

Sleepy Cat Urban Winery, located in Allentown’s Theater District, is owned and operated by Mark and Carrie Gerenscher. They opened in 2016 with a wide variety of focus on wine, a fun vibe and a winery experience, urban style. In 2018, Sleepy Cat was voted Best Winery in the Valley by Lehigh Valley Style magazine.

Kendal Conrad is a singer-songwriter from Pottstown, PA. She has opened for Blake Shelton and performed onstage with Keith Urban at Musikfest. She recently appeared on the Q on Fox 29 News, Good Day PA and WFMZ 69 News.

Her singles “Come to Your Senses”, “Leader of

the Pack” and “Bodyguard” have over 300,000 streams on Spotify Diggity Dogs and More, the popular food truck that is a staple at the Trailhead will be open for dinner. The program will be re-scheduled in the event of rain. Green zone protocols will be followed and physical distancing is encouraged.

Interstate Highways & the Gazette Car/Truck Contest

The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways (commonly called the Interstate system or simply the Interstate) is a network of freeways that forms a part of the National Highway System here in the United States.

While serving as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II, Eisenhower came to appreciate the German Autobahn network as an essential component of a national defense system, providing transport routes for military supplies and troop deployments.

Construction of our Interstate System was authorized in 1956, and the original portion was completed 35 years later. The system contributed

to shaping the United States as a world economic superpower and a highly industrialized nation. It also influenced the place of the automobile in our society.

For this issue, almost a dozen readers of Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette submitted pictures of their prized vintage cars and trucks.

Between them, these cars and trucks have been driven many miles on the Interstate system.

The submissions were entered in our “Car & Truck Picture Contest.” Originally, we planned to have three winners, but decided to add a category when the entries were reviewed. Full details on pages 8-11.

Rivalries fan the creative fires of any industry.

McNeill Reminds Residents of Fireworks Regulations

As the July Fourth holiday draws closer, so too do the calls and complaints to my office about fireworks activity.

This year, it seems as though the annual tradition in communities here in Lehigh County and across the Commonwealth has reached a heightened level of activity. Perhaps one might say people are especially keen on releasing extra stress brought out by the COVID-19 pandemic and the quarantine

that halted get-togethers. Regardless of reasoning, the displays are unauthorized and, as noted by the calls and conversations, many residents tend to feel that these nighttime displays are adding to, not alleviating stress: upsetting pets, depriving many from sleep, negatively impacting our veterans with PTSD, and, in our cities, posing a safety issue.

called upon to protect and serve, from our police departments to fire companies, have already seen an increase in demand for their services as our communities continue to come back to life amid a global pandemic. As such, the added burden placed by the uptick in pyrotechnics across our communities is not making their jobs any easier, or our streets any safer.

Just last week, I read of an incident in the Bronx where police officers responded to what was reported as gunshots only to find a teenager had been struck in his chest while lighting off fireworks.

While fireworks are available for legal purchase

by Pennsylvania residents, there are regulations and laws that limit where they can be used. Those who are caught violating existing use laws do face citations but catching people using legally purchased fireworks illegally can prove to be a taxing and challenging nightly occurrence for law enforcement.

There are strict rules about where you can legally use the aerial fireworks that a new law made available in 2017. Pennsylvanians are allowed to purchase “consumer fireworks,” which contain up to 50 milligrams of explosive material. This includes

Pennsylvania State Police restrictions include: You must be more than 150 feet away from any “occupied structure” — defined as “any structure, vehicle or place adapted for overnight accommodation” or business — whether or not any people are present there.

You can’t set them off on public or private property without express permission of the owner.

You can’t set them off from, within or toward a building or vehicle.

You can’t set them off if you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

And, keep in mind, local municipalities may have regulations that differ from state or federal guidelines.

The fireworks are likely to continue, so too are efforts and conversations to find a balanced solution to address safety concerns that ensure our celebrations are mindful of the collective whole.

Rest assured, I am working with my colleagues in Harrisburg to address this issue so that a fair and balanced solution can be found. There is no reason why our communities should feel like, as one person called it, “a war zone.”

How to Build a Campfire (excerpted) SOURCE: REI Co-op

For many, the campfire is a beloved and indispensable outdoor tradition – a kinetic, luminous, dreamlike force of nature that for generations has served as the centerpiece of backwoods gatherings. Here is guidance on how to build a backcountry campfire.

Find or Build a Fire Ring In backcountry areas where fires are permitted, use an existing fire ring if one has been left behind.

Build a new one only in emergency situations and, if the situation permits, dismantle it when you are done. If one already exists, clean it out before you depart.

Clear away all flammable material from your fire pit. Ideally, the base of your fire should be sand or gravel or mineral soil (often found in streambeds or on gravel bars). Intense heat can sterilize healthy soil, so choose your site conscientiously.

Gather the Wood To burn a successful fire, you’ll need three types fuel: tinder, kindling and firewood.

• Tinder includes small twigs, dry leaves, needles or forest duff.

• Kindling consists of small sticks, typically less than one inch around.

• Firewood is any larger piece of wood and is what will keep your fire going long into the night.

If you forage for firewood, gather only downed wood far from your site. Never cut live trees or break off branches from standing trees, even dead trees. Birds and wildlife make use of dead branches and snags.

Do not gather or burn pieces thicker than an adult's wrist. This is because thick chunks of wood are rarely allowed to burn completely and are typically left behind as blackened, unsightly scraps.

Build the Campfire Cone: Start with a small cone of kindling around a few handfuls of tinder that are loosely piled in the center of the fire ring. Once the fire is going strong and the temperature increases, you can add larger logs a few at a time as needed.

Log cabin: Place two larger pieces of firewood parallel to each other and with some room in between to form the base of your structure. Then, turn 90 degrees and place two slightly smaller pieces on top and perpendicular to form a square. Place plenty of tinder inside the square. Continue adding a few more layers of firewood around the perimeter, getting a little bit smaller with each layer. Finish with a layer of kindling and tinder across the top.

Remember to leave space between logs so the fire can get plenty of oxygen.

Upside down (pyramid): Start with three or four of your largest logs side-by-side on the bottom layer. Turn 90 degrees and then add a second layer of slightly smaller logs on top. Continue alternating a few more layers in this manner, getting smaller as you go. Place your kindling and tinder on top.

Light the Campfire Light the tinder with a match or lighter. Using fire starter that is designed to easily ignite can help the tinder catch the flame. Be sure to carry waterproof matches and fire starter.

After lighting the tinder, blow lightly at the base of the fire to provide oxygen, which will help increase the intensity of the flame and further ignite the wood. As the fire burns move embers to the center to burn them completely. Ideally, you should reduce them to white ash.

Extinguish the Campfire Always check with local land managers for their recommendations, and follow their steps if they provide them. Generally, though, you should extinguish your fire by pouring water on it (be careful not to stand where the steam can scald you), stirring the ashes, then applying more water. Repeat as often as needed.

Ashes should be cool to the touch before you leave the site. Be utterly certain a fire and its embers are out and cold before you depart.

Note that the practice of using dirt or sand to extinguish a fire is problematic because it can insulate coals, which can become uncovered later, igniting a wildfire.

Never leave a campfire unattended!

Clean Up the Campfire Burn trash items only if they can be fully consumed by fire and turned to ash. Do not attempt to burn plastic, cans or foil. If you do burn something that's not fully consumed, collect the remains when the fire is out and either pack it out or put it in a trash

receptacle.

When you’re in the backcountry, pack out any trash found in your pit. Extract any charcoal pieces left inside your ring, carry them away from your site, crush the chunks, then scatter the remnants and dust throughout a broad area.

Dismantle any structure you might have built.
