So in this first issue of the New Year, in addition to local news highlights and announcements, we’re going to put some extra focus on “at home” activities, including how to keep your pets happy when there are so many more people around, all the time! As disrupted as our own schedules have been, it’s important to keep our pet’s schedules as normal as possible. We’ll give you some good ideas on how to make that happen.

For those of you looking to brighten up your living space this winter we have a list of houseplants that thrive in low light, some of which are also major “air purifiers.” Each of them will make your space a happier one, and some will even thrive in your darkest room.

We also have additional COVID-19 vaccine information, as well as tips for winter landscape photography, information on how to stay safe in a storm both at home and if you happen to be out driving, a great winter squash bread recipe, and more.

So let’s look at 2021 as a different year from 2020 and let’s make it the most positive and healthy experience we can for ourselves and everyone in our lives.

New Year’s Resolutions

Stepping into a new year is filled with traditions.

One of the enduring traditions is making New Year’s resolutions. Making them is very popular, but succeeding at them is sometimes a little tougher.

Here are a few New Year’s resolutions worth considering in 2021.

During this pandemic – even more than in normal times – we often find we have tons of commitments that are not always about us. One resolution to

consider is to make a little more “me” time just for you. Try out a new hobby, or bring back an old one like cooking, making art, or just sitting down to read a good book. A simple commitment to act on resolutions like these can have real benefits for both your mental and physical health.

Along the way, try to “live happy.” If you find yourself saying things like, “I’ll be happy when…” the suggestion here is don’t focus on waiting to get happy, but rather keep healthy habits every day and focus on staying positive.

While takeout is super-convenient, it’s not really that affordable and it’s not generally that healthy.

A commitment to cooking more meals for yourself can be a valuable resolution to make. You’ll know exactly what’s in your meals and whether or not the ingredients are fresh and healthful. A New Year’s resolution to cook more may even lead you to learn more about cooking and different flavors.

You can find almost every recipe in the world online, and you’ll likely save serious cash in the process.

Keep Moving and Connected Keeping yourself moving in the New Year doesn’t necessarily mean you have to sweat through a highintensity workout. What it really suggests is that you should stay mobile – rather than sedentary – to get that blood flowing every single day.

great for the mind. One way to work towards this goal is to walk rather than drive, whenever you can. The bottom line is if you increase your physical activity, you’ll experience obvious health benefits.

Finally, one of the biggest resolutions is to stay connected with others to avoid feelings of loneliness and isolation – and help them avoid those feelings too. In 2021, especially if you’re due for a catch-up visit with someone, make better efforts to stay in touch. Send an email, write a letter, pick up the phone, or plan some Zoom “Happy Hours” or FaceTime sessions – whatever works to stay in touch with those you love the most.

It’s been said so many times before, here’s to a happy and healthy New Year.

When it comes to being stuck inside, there’s no doubt that pets can make the time at home feel a whole lot more enjoyable. Being stuck at home with your pet can also present its share of challenges.

Here are some tips from pet behaviorists on how to keep your pet happy and engaged this winter when you are both stuck inside.

Stick to their routine / Your routine has likely been disrupted in some pretty significant ways this past year. Even so, it’s important to try to keep your pet’s routine – feeding, bathroom breaks, walks – as intact as possible.

Be intentional about rest time / Your pet may be used to having alone time when the family is normally away, so try to give your pets plenty of down time each day. Your kids may need activities to fill their days, but your cat or dog will be just fine, and will even benefit from having some quiet time.

Let them chew it out / When you have conference calls, homeschooling sessions, or just moments

when you need some rest, it can be helpful to give your pets a long-chew treat to keep them entertained.

Kongs and other sturdy toys can be filled with peanut butter and then frozen for a longer-lasting distraction.

Happy Indoor Pets Continued from page 7

to the mailbox can provide a little exercise. If you’re truly stuck inside, clear away some furniture to make room for a game of fetch or tug of war.

Play some mind games / Another great way to tire your pet out is with mental stimulation, like teaching them a new trick! You can also use feeding time as a way to mentally enrich your pet’s day.

Scatter their food around the house and let them use their sense of smell to find it.

Be a considerate roommate / Nobody appreciates a roommate who is always making noise, and your pet is no exception. Be mindful that pets can hear a lot better than we can and try to keep excessive noise to a minimum.

Keep them on a healthy diet / You may be indulging in boxed mac and cheese and one too many brownies these days, but that doesn’t mean your pet can’t stick to their healthy diet. Stick to providing their regular food as much as possible.

Create a “safe spot” / Your pet may need some personal space to feel safe and comfortable during a time when there are suddenly more people around. This is especially true for cats, but dogs can benefit from having a designated “safe space” as

well.

Get creative / Create and provide fun toys that your dog or cat has permission to destroy, something like a cardboard tube with kibble hidden inside.

Having a productive way to get any destructive energy out can be beneficial – both for your pet and your shoes.

A board of directors and mission statement were created.

A website (WWW.NLCOMMUNITYCENTER.COM) was established and fundraising began. * After raising $736,000. through state grants and citizen contributions, we purchased land, demolished existing buildings on the land, installed infrastructure for drainage, secured a 50- year lease for adjacent property, and began construction of Phase 1, the building shell. To continue with the construction, we investigated and applied for additional grants and contributions, but due to circumstances beyond our control,these funds never materialized.

Currently we are debt-free. * A Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority was formed with the advice of our then State Representative, Julie Harhart, to include the three municipalities of the Northern Lehigh School District residents and have more avenues available to obtain funding to finish the construction of the building. * Covid-19 seriously jeopardized fundraising, and one of the 3 participating municipalities, Walnutport Borough, voted to not help support the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority. With that said, the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority’s board voted to not include taking on the Northern Lehigh Community Center’s building project as one of their tasks. The NLRA has solicited funds this past December from the public to continue their recreational and educational programs and fulfill their budget deficit they face.

WHERE WE ARE TODAY *Since the NLPA relinquished the programs to the NLRA, our income stream has been severely curtailed. We no longer have the funds to pay our insurance and real estate taxes. We need help to generate $1.5 million to finish the existing Phase 1.

Phase 2 would consist of the construction of the gymnasium at a much lower cost.

Substantial donors could have their names placed on the outside of the building. *We could gift the building to be used for the positive benefit of our community— such as the school for a life-long learning center, borough or township for a recreation/educational center. *We could sell the building and land and give the proceeds to the NLRA to continue running the programs.

Winter Prep for Home Energy Savings SOURCE: PPL Electric Utilities

If you haven’t already, now is the time to think about getting some energy savings out of your home this winter. Here are a few things that will help you do that.

Capture the sun’s light and heat / During the day, leave your curtains and blinds open to illuminate your rooms naturally and gain warmth from the sun. At night, close your curtains and blinds to prevent that free heat from escaping.

Prevent fireplace heat loss / When you’re not using your fireplace, keep the damper closed so warm air doesn’t escape through the chimney. Using energy-efficient fireplace grates will pull cool air out of your room and into the fireplace, while sending warm air back in the room.

Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans / Sometimes we forget that ceiling fans are just as important for keeping you warm as they are for keeping you cool. Flip the switch to change the direction of the blades so they spin clockwise, which will push warm air downward.

Adjust the thermostat according to the time of day / When you’re home and awake, set the heat as low as it feels comfortable. Aim for 68 degrees as an optimal temperature. Wearing warmer clothing or grabbing a blanket can help keep you cozy. Then,

while you’re sleeping or out of the house, lower the thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees. Doing so for at least 8 hours can save around 10% on your heating bill.

A programmable thermostat will make it easy to save. You also don’t have to heat all rooms equally.

Using an energy-efficient space heater in your most common rooms allows you to keep the main temperature lower.

Winterize your windows and doors / If you still have window air conditioning units in place, remove them now! Then you’ll want to inspect all your doors, windows and ductwork for gaps that could leak heat from your home. Many of these cracks and leaks can easily be fixed with caulk and weather stripping – all of which can add up to a lot of savings.

Very often, the only saturated color is the deep blue of the clear sky.

Moreover, snow covers the unfitting color elements on the ground, such as non-complimentary green-brown hues of the empty fields.

During sunset and sunrise, the white snow nicely reflects the saturated tones of the sky. In extreme temperatures, I often observed rich purple and orange tones in the low sky above the horizon before sunrise and after sunset. Don’t be surprised to see bluish shadow areas in sunny conditions Make use of frost / White frost can turn almost anything into a very attractive subject. Paradoxically, that is exactly what makes it difficult to photograph. With a thin layer of frost covering everything, a landscape looks like a fairy tale, which may obscure the focus of the photographer for a good composition.

Good composition and framing should always be your priority, but do not underestimate other variables that come into play while shooting, whether it has to do with proper exposure, focusing, depth of field or simpler things related to your camera settings.

If you live in a place or have a room where sunlight is very limited, but want to dress it up with a beautiful plant, you'll want to check out this list of low-light loving houseplants. According to Bridget Zazzara, the indoor retail and seasonal plant manager for Logan’s Trading Company in Raleigh, North Carolina, these houseplants can withstand even the darkest corners of your home.

Snake Plant / The Snake Plant is known for its tall, skinny leaves and attractive foliage. Varieties can be anywhere from three- to four-inches tall to three- to four-feet tall and when in bloom, flowers resemble small lilies along a single stem and are very fragrant. This variety is drought tolerant and high on NASA's list of air-purifying plants.

ZZ Plant / The ZZ, or zamiaculcas zamiifolia, is another drought- and low light-tolerant option.

This variety comes with solid green foliage that reaches between one- to three-feet in height.

Peace Lily / Known for its beautiful large white blooms, the Peace Lily is a moisture-loving plant that can get by with a little less light than other tropicals. It is also a major air purifier.

Devil's Ivy/Pothos / If you're looking for a plant that thrives in low light, you can't go wrong with Devil's Ivy. Also known as Pothos or Philodendrons, these long vining plants can reach lengths of more than 15 feet. There is a range of foliage color from dark green to chartreuse to variegated white-andgreen. These are also easy to propagate – just place cuttings in water.

Neanthe Bella Palm or Parlour Palm / Neanthe Bella Palm or “Parlour Palm,” is a slow growing palm that can reach several feet in height. It likes to be slightly dry, so beware of over-watering.

Chinese Evergreen / Looking to brighten up a dark corner with a little color? Try Chinese Evergreen, which is known for its multicolored green or redand-pink foliage. This colorful plant, another airpurifier, can tolerate moist to slightly-dry soil in between watering. Some varieties can reach two to three feet tall.

Lady Palm / The Lady Palm is an extremely slow growing palm with unique dark green foliage shaped like a hand. The Lady Palm can grow to be 15 feet over the course of several years. These palms will tolerate some soil dryness, and will also fare well with a bit of bright but indirect light.

Spider Plant / Finally, if you’re looking for a hanging plant, the Spider Plant is the perfect choice.

It likes to get slightly dry between watering and will tolerate indirect light (so it's best for a spot where some light hits). If you want to propagate some for yourself just take one of the "baby" plants and set it in a dish of water until new roots sprout.

In the process of getting vaccines approved to fight the coronavirus, the Emergency Use Authorization (“EUA”) is a new term we’re hearing often. A major difference in the process to get EUA approval versus getting a regular FDA approval is time.

"You have these crises that require very fast action, so you need the ability to respond quickly,” says Joshua Sharfstein, M.D., vice dean for Public Health Practice at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a former principal deputy commissioner at the FDA. The FDA's traditional approval process can take years, and that sort of time frame seems almost indefensible in the middle of a pandemic that has already claimed more than 300,000 lives in the U.S. alone.

It's important to note that the evidence standard can also be lower for EUAs compared with traditional FDA approval. In the case of a potential EUA, the FDA weighs the risks and benefits using

what evidence it has. If certain criteria are met – for instance, there are no other already-approved alternatives – then it issues an EUA. "The Emergency Use Authorization is still extremely rigorous,” as Francis Collins, M.D., director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), explained in a recent AARP tele-town hall event.

“Let nobody try to tell you that this is cutting corners."

Between office work at home, binge watching Netflix, and generally spending more time being sedentary this past year, it’s safe to say that we’ve all spent significantly more time sitting down than we would have in a normal year. So now we’re stepping into 2021 and with the winter months ahead and the continuing pandemic we are looking at quite a bit more of the same.

The general consensus suggests that “sitting is the new smoking” in terms of how it affects our health. That means all this sitting around isn’t doing us any favors. That being said, you really don’t need to overhaul your lifestyle in order to counterbalance

the time you spend sitting down or being sedentary.

In fact, new research suggests that a simple daily walk may be all you need to combat the effects of sitting all day.

According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, walking for a minimum of 11 minutes a day could be enough to lessen the effects of a sedentary lifestyle. The analysis suggests that about 30-40 minutes of moderate exercise or walking per day is the most conservative model, but participants who practiced as little as 11 minutes per day did not differ in risk compared with the more active group.

In other words: if you really want to make sure you’re staying healthy, or if you’re spending most of your day sitting down, you’ll want to double or triple that daily walk – for both mental and physical health.

By Amy Herald @Meave Here is a winter squash bread recipe you are sure to love. But first, some winter squash facts: Winter squashes are an excellent source of vitamins A and C, potassium and manganese, calcium, magnesium, Vitamin E, Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, and Folate.

Squash is also high in fiber so it may help give you the sensation of feeling full, without having consumed a lot of calories.

Ingredients:

• Butter, softened: 2/3 cup • Sugar: 2 2/3 cups • Eggs: 4 • All-Purpose Flour: 3 1/2 cups • Baking Power: 2 teaspoons • Salt: 1 teaspoon • Cinnamon, ground: 1 teaspoon • Cloves, ground: 1 teaspoon • Nutmeg: 1/2 teaspoon • Winter Squash Puree, cooked: 3 cups • Vanilla Extract: 1 teaspoon • Walnuts (or Pecans), chopped: 1 cup

Serves: 8 • Prep: 15 minutes Cook: 2 hours • Method: Bake

Instructions:

Step 1: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut 1 large squash or 2 small squash in half and remove seeds, cover the tops with aluminum foil. Place the squash halves, cut-side up, on a foil-lined, rimmed baking sheet and bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes, or until squash is soft. Cool.

Step 2: When squash has cooled, scoop out pulp and mix with an electric mixer until pureed. Measure out 3 cups. (You can freeze any extra for other uses.)

Step 3: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Step 4: Cream butter and gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Step 5: Combine next 6 ingredients to create flour mixture. Then add squash puree (first) to the creamed mixture, adding the flour mixture last.

Step 6: Stir in vanilla and pecans.

Step 7: Spoon into 3 greased, 8-inch loaf pans.

Bake at 350 for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 8: Cool in pans 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.

The question is: Are you prepared to stay safe – at home and on the road? Here are 10 ways to stay safe when Mother Nature really brings the snow.

Driving • If you don’t have to travel – stay home. Winter weather causes about a half million crashes each year, resulting in over 2,000 deaths.

• If you must drive, slow down, accelerate and decelerate slowly, and increase your following distance to 5 or 6 seconds.

2021 SWC Arts Contest The Woman’s Club of Slatington is sponsoring a community arts contest during April 2021.

Categories include: • Coloring for ages preschool to adult • Photography for third grade students to adults • Two-dimensional art for third grade students to adults • Three-dimensional art for third grade students to adults • Fiber art for third grade students to adults Cash prizes will be awarded to students in grades 3 to 12 who place first, second, or third in judging by local professionals. All art will be displayed at the Slatington Public Library for the Community Arts Night which will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 19, 2021.

Crayola Experience Easton Reopening The Crayola Experience in downtown Easton, Pa., reopened on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021. The attraction and The Crayola Store will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Crayola Experience is extending expiration dates on all valid annual passes and valid general admission tickets.

The family attraction has been temporarily closed since Dec. 12, 2020, as a result of a statewide executive order affecting indoor entertainment venues in response to the increasing spread of COVID-19. Those restrictions are being lifted as of 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2021.

Previously implemented employee and customer protocols designed to promote cleanliness, social distancing and reduced physical contact in the store remain in effect including: • Requiring face masks for employees and guests 2 years and older.

• Restricting occupancy to 50 percent capacity.

• Entry screenings for employees and guests, including temperature checks.

• Recommended cashless transactions to reduce physical contact.

• Signage to facilitate a minimum of 6 feet physical 32

distancing.

• Enhanced cleaning and sanitation protocols.

• Additional hand sanitizer stations.
