You might recall that in our last issue we asked recent brides to “tell us your love story.” We are thrilled to report that thanks to Debby and Joe Moyer, Kelsey and David Goodhile, Gabrielle and Cody Remaley, and Kristy Horwith-Abreu and Pete Abreu, we have four of the most wonderful love stories to share with you in this issue. We are even including magical photos from each of those special days.

We also give you insights and insider tips from Bride.com on how to plan your wedding successfully working as a team (a couple). If your partner isn’t the “just tell me where to show up” kind, this article will definitely help you avoid butting heads in the process.

Here We Walk Again Lehigh Township Rails to Trails is conducting another of its popular winter walks, this time in Nazareth. If the weather cooperates, it will be held on Saturday, February 13th. The walk will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Whitefield House property, at the corner of S. Whitefield and E. Center Streets. We’ll meet in front of the smaller building, known as the Gray Cottage. Street parking is available. We will be seeing some of the beautiful old homes and buildings in town, learning some of their history, and visiting an old Moravian Cemetery. LOVE STORY:

Debby and Joe Moyer

W

e are Debby and Joe Moyer and this is our love story.

In late April of 2016 a mom of two teenage boys was on Match.com looking for someone to spend some quality time with. He was a widow who had lost his partner of 20+ years, not quite a year earlier.

He was also on Match.com looking for companionship. Finally he said “hi” and asked me out to the movies.

I wanted to meet first to make sure he was legit so I had him meet me at my part-time job where I had coworkers on the lookout. When they saw him they gave me two thumbs up.

We went to dinner and the movies. Sad to say he was not ready to move on and that was ok. We went on several dates here and there, dinner, movies, and just hanging out. Jump to October 2016 and we were officially dating. We had several things going for us: my mom liked him, my boys liked him and the dog liked him. His parents really liked me, as did his brother and sister.

With me living in Kutztown and him living in Walnutport we only saw each other every other week. Jump forward to September 2018 and Joe's mother passes away suddenly. In August of 2019 Joe decided that it was time to settle down and buys The Ring. At that point, my youngest would be graduating from high school and I would be alone. Then in September of 2019, his father passes away. Joe was going to tell him that evening that he was going to ask me to marry him.

On October 5, 2019 Joe pops the question. I had no idea it was coming and of course I said yes. We both decided that our wedding had to be at the Filbert Bed & Breakfast, which was a place we had visited with Joe's mother the year she passed away.

On October 10, 2020 my boys walked me down the aisle and Joe and I were married. The day was perfect, the flowers, the dress, the weather, not a cloud in the sky.

Love Story: Kelsey & David Goodhile

K

elsey of Slatington, PA met her true love in high school. They are high school sweethearts.

Kelsey was a sophomore and David was a senior.

Kelsey was looking for a homecoming date for the dance at Northern Lehigh High School at the time and she decided she was going to start messaging a few of the seniors, because she was not interested in anyone in her grade. Her true love was one of the guys she messaged.

They had their first date at Sal's Pizza in Slatington on September 26, 2010 and have been inseparable since. Together they enjoyed the homecoming dance, as well as many more dances including David's senior farewell, Kelsey's prom and Kelsey's senior farewell.

In September of 2019 David proposed to Kelsey in a sunflower field. Of course she said yes! It was one of the happiest days of her life.

Love Story: Gabrielle and Cody Remaley

O

ur story starts on August 27, 2014. My sister Eva and I were at the West End Fair to enjoy a night out. Shortly after I got home, I had a Facebook messenger notification from Cody. I recognized the name because he played football for Northern Lehigh and I was a cheerleader for Palmerton. I opened it. The message read, “Heyy, how are you?” I replied, “Heyy, I’m good how are you?” The conversation continued for a few hours.

Then we exchanged phone numbers and I went to bed. Before seven in the morning, I received a text from Cody. We carried the conversation throughout the day, and he decided to ask me out on a date.

We decided to go to Platz (P.J. Whelihan’s) and then the West End Fair for the truck pulls Saturday night. We talked every day until Saturday, growing more excited each day. On Saturday he drove to my house, picked me up, and we were on our way.

We ended the night with our first kiss. He texted when he got home saying he had a great time and would like to go on another date soon. Cody was at college all week, so when he came home, we wanted to spend as much time together as we could.

Three weekends later I met his parents, and the following weekend he met mine. On September 26, 2014, he asked me to be his girlfriend, making it official.

The days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years. We talked about our future and our plans. On June 20, 2018 Cody proposed while on vacation in Ocean City, Maryland surrounded by my Mom, Dad, brother, two sisters and my niece. Then the wedding planning began.

The first thing we decided to do days after becoming engaged was set a date. We knew we wanted a fall wedding. Anyone that knows Cody knows how much he lives for hunting season, so I knew it was going to be a challenge to pick a date we both agreed on. We began looking at the fall months of 2019. Nothing stood out to us, so we looked at fall 2020. When we saw that September 26 fell on a Saturday we knew right away that was going to be our wedding date.

Six years after we officially became a couple, we were set to get married. At first, wedding planning was easy and fun. As time passed many things became difficult and were up in the air, thanks to COVID. Thankfully, we were able to have our wedding day. We did have to cut back on the number of guests and also had to push our reception to September of 2021.

They say everything happens for a reason. In our story, even with the obstacles, everything worked out better than we could have dreamed.

We are happily married with our two cats and are more than excited to have found each other and grow old together.

y husband and I were married on October 10, 2020, during an exceedingly difficult time in our country, but we were not going to let a pandemic stop us from becoming Mr. and Mrs. Our story began in September of 2017 when we met. We began working at the same place within a few weeks of each other. We were in different departments, but our lunch hour was the same.

We started talking and after a few weeks I found myself looking forward to that hour each day.

Even though I thought he had a bad haircut and he thought I was too tall and outspoken, we really enjoyed each other’s company. We began sharing lunches. He loves to grill and I like to eat, so it was the perfect match!

As weeks passed, he began asking me about my faith and from there the conversations became deeper and more intense. We had a great friendship at this point and during the summer of 2018 he asked me out on a proper date. I wasn’t sure if I was ready for a “real date” yet, but I said yes. It was an awesome day of fun, shopping and of course, eating. We found that we both have a love for target shooting. The range is still one of our favorite date spots.

Fast forward to the engagement: Pete kept telling me he was going to marry me one day and I just kept telling him, ok, but not yet. I wanted to be absolutely sure and I wanted God to be the center of us, always. One night he said to me, when you are ready, let me know...

So, I bought a set of pre-marriage workbooks for us to do together and we spent the next few months working on them. We learned so much about each other, but most of all we learned how compatible we are and how we see things the same way.

We joke that we learned that I am basically just a guy trapped in a girl’s body, because I like all the things men typically like, food, guns, getting News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || FEBRUARY 4, 2021

dirty and a cold beer on a hot summer day! I was his perfect match, and he was mine.

A few weeks later, we were sitting on the couch watching a movie and I looked at him and said, “I think it’s time we go shopping” and he said, “Ok, for what?” I replied, “My engagement ring.”

Three days later we were standing in the jewelry store choosing the perfect rings. So we didn’t have a grand romantic proposal, but it isn’t about all of that. The little things we do for each other every day count more than one grand gesture.

That was February 2020, just before COVID-19 hit our perfect little world. We began planning and I had my heart set on the date of October 10th.

It’s a special day to me, as it was my great grandfather’s birthday. We called our parents and his mother told us that October 10th was Pete’s grandfather’s birthday as well.

So, the date was set! We wanted something small and intimate with our closest family and our dearest friends – just the two of us, our children, our families and friends celebrating together. I found a dress that I could believe was made specifically for me. Everything was going as planned but then COVID, fear, shutdowns and quarantines. We kept on planning without fear and in the end it all worked out perfectly. When I saw my soon-to-be husband look down the aisle at me, I knew right then and there that our greatest adventure was about to begin.

“A story from 100 years ago” There was once a man who lived in our town [Souderton] with the name Martin Bechtel, who once told one Jake Freed [A deacon in the local church.] that when he was young and single, he had been a tramp.

He told him that he and another fellow once walked to Ohio, now about 100 years ago.

A preacher told him at which house they should stop for a room, where good people lived that he knew well.

There was at that time still a big wilderness between here and that house in Ohio. They walked [on roads, or rather, wagon lanes] that went through big, thick, dark woods where they didn’t see any man or house.

One evening when it was beginning to get dark they came out of a big woods and to a small house, where the preacher had said the good people lived.

The boys decided they wanted to see whether these were such good people. They asked whether they could stay overnight. The man said that they

could. The boys didn’t introduce themselves and also didn’t tell them who told them to stop there.

That evening they told the people that when they were going through the woods they had heard a man holler or cry, but they didn’t go and look for him. The man told them that it was lucky for them that they hadn’t gone to look for him, because it was a hungry panther that was crying.

The boys were tired, hungry, and thirsty, but the people didn’t bring them anything to eat. They also thought the man watched them all evening with one eye. It was a small one-story house. On one end was a ladder, and when it was bedtime, the man told them they could climb up the ladder and sleep upstairs. When they were almost asleep, they heard the man saying something downstairs.

Then they heard that he was praying to God that He would keep him and his family safe from evil people. Then the boys felt safe.

In the morning when they were ready to leave, the boys told them who they were and who told them that they had rooms and were good people.

This made the man sorrowful, and he told them to eat breakfast before they left. But they said, no, and then left. [So in the end then, who felt more ‘sorrowful,’ that man or the boys who did not properly introduce themselves right away?]

[This Pennsylvania Dutch story was originally submitted to the Souderton Independent newspaper by local historian Henry Hagey and printed December 22, 1933. It appears to be a true story, collected by Hagey from deacon Jake Freed (1851-1929) of the Franconia Mennonite congregation. The story was told to him by one Martin Bechtel, presumably Martin G. Bechtel (1797-1890), buried at Blooming Glen.

to journey on foot long distances. Also, because of the source, we may assume that it is about two young Mennonite men traveling west and staying overnight with a Mennonite family. In any case, it’s a story about tentative hospitality and the fears accompanying a lonely life in the wilderness. The translation was done by Mrs. Arlene Clemmer for the MHEP Newsletter, March 1980 [MHEP: Mennonite Historians of Eastern Pennsylvania].

It’s helpful to know something about the personality of the story teller, Jake Freed, as Hagey would have known him growing up in Franconia.

Freed represents the last vestige of an older Mennonite culture that changed rapidly in the 20th century under the influence of modern evangelicalism.

He was well liked in the community as a successful businessman, and in the congregation as a practical,

down-to-earth deacon. In the nineteenth century the church did not have convictions against the use of alcohol and tobacco, such as emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Today, ministers and deacons would be faulted for the use of alcohol and tobacco. Freed, however, was a man of his time. As was the custom then, Freed would stop at the hotel for a drink. Once in a while it happened that he overindulged.

When this occurred, at the next Sunday worship service he made a confession. He did this with the expectation that members of the congregation who experienced this same shortcoming would be equally ready to confess their failures. When conviction grew against the use of tobacco and the spittoon behind the pulpit, members confronted Freed about his habit. He responded to them, “No tobacco, no Jake Freed!” And that was that.]

The gold-standard N95 masks are still hard to find, but the KF94 resembles an N95, with a few differences. The KF94 is made of a similar nonwoven material that blocks 94% of the hardest-

to-trap viral particles. When compared to the N95, the KF94 has ear loops, instead of elastic head bands. That means it won’t fit as snugly as an N95 – although double-masking can help close any gaps.

You could consider saving KF94 masks for higher-risk situations, like spending time in a store or going to a doctor’s appointment, and doublemask with two cloth masks on a regular basis.
