According to Punxsutawney Phil, we’re going to be saddled with six more weeks of winter. I never did like that groundhog, and regardless of some rodent catching a glimpse of his shadow or not, winter officially isn’t over until March 19. Frankly, after all of the havoc the snow has caused on our deadlines and production schedule, I’m looking forward to warmer days ahead.

The Gazette you are currently holding in your hands is our annual Valentine’s Day edition, and this just may be our best ever. There is an awesome Valentine’s Day spread on 20, courtesy of Danielle, our publishing assistant and a markedly non-romantic (but still great) Q & A with a local former WWE Superstar and professional athlete, Gene Snisky on 40.

Local Student In Inauguration Parade

HOMETOWN NEWS, VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE Nicholas H. Millward of New Tripoli marched in the inauguration parade for new Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Richmond, Va. Cadet Millward's parents are Mr. & Mrs. Harry T. Millward of New Tripoli.

Approximately 250 of VMI's 1,600 cadets returned early from Christmas furlough on Thursday, Jan. 9, to prepare for marching in the inauguration parade. All cadets holding rank in the Corps of Cadets returned to march, along with many volunteers.

The Jan. 11 parade marked the second time in as many years that members of the Corps have participated in an inauguration parade. The entire Corps marched in President Barack Obama's inaugural parade in Washington, D.C. in January of 2013.

HOMETOWN NEWS SERVICE Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Aaron M. Kostick has graduated from the U.S. Navy's Enlisted

Nuclear Power School at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C. Nuclear Power School is a rigorous six-month course that trains officer and enlisted students in the science and engineering fundamental to the design, operation, and maintenance of naval nuclear propulsion plants.

Graduates next undergo additional instruction at a prototype-training unit before serving as an Electronics Technician, Machinist's Mate, or Electrician's Mate aboard a nuclear-powered submarine or surface warfare ship.

Kostick is the son of Kelli and Michael Kostick of Northampton. He is a 2011 graduate of Northampton Area High School.

Meet the Staff The start of a new year is the time to look forward to what’s ahead in the upcoming months. What special events or trips are you most excited for in 2014?

Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: My fiancé, Jess, and I are going to get married in October. I can’t wait.

Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: I love traveling, despite my inability to do so without Dramamine and nausea. This year I am looking forward to visiting historic Frederick, Maryland and a weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I have always wanted to spend some time taking in the sights and (mostly) sounds of Nashville, TN and I am really hoping to get there this year.

Tony Pisco, Art Director: I am looking forward to going to all of the amusement parks again that we went to last summer. We started with Dorney and then made it to Hersheypark (twice), Knoebels and Dutch Wonderland. We might even get to one in Florida this year, too.

Danielle Tepper, Publishing Assistant: I’m trying to see more concerts this year. In a couple weeks, I’m going to see Justin Timberlake at Madison Square Garden and in June, Fall Out Boy and Paramore.

Then in July, I’m spending a week in St. Lucia with my family. All fun things!

The Slatington Woman’s Club has recognized Abbey Sauerwine of Slatington, Pa. as the Girl of the Month for February 2014.

Abbey is the daughter of Pamela Jean and Clay Sauerwine. She has one sister, Maggie, and one brother, John. Abbey serves as a member of the Student Council at Northern Lehigh High School. She is the President of the Interact Club and is in the National Honor Society. Abbey is the treasurer for the Library Club, is a member of the E7 Environmental Club and Rotary Observers. She participates in the Cross Country and Track teams. Abbey enjoys the outdoors and running. She is also employed at Weis Markets. Abbey plans to attend a four-year university upon graduation, although she has not yet settled on a major.

Submitted by CINDY JONES A basket social will be held this April in conjunction with the annual Multiple Sclerosis walk held by the National MS society. The basket social will take place on April 6 at the Vigilant Fire Co. in Slatington. Donations for the basket social are currently being sought. Businesses are asked to donate baskets, items to make a basket, gift certificates or other items. Please consider supporting the raffle by donating to this event.

Rails To Trails

Submitted by NANCY THATCHER Do you enjoy walking or biking local trails?

Are you interested in local history? Lehigh Township Rails to Trails is involved in projects and recreational opportunities involving both of these interests. Individual memberships are $15 and are good for one year. Being a member entitles you to attend meetings and to help work on projects.

This past year we cleared and developed the Lock 25 area along the Walnutport Canal, an area that lies in Lehigh Township. This spot will be opened as a picnic area in the spring. We also created informational signs for the site with the help of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor organization. More work needs to be done, which will involve both maintenance and fundraising.

Meet Robert Berger & Michelle Raber

S

latington is known as a bedroom town, as are most towns in this and many other areas of Pennsylvania.

For those who have never heard the term, a bedroom town or commuter town is a place with a generally low cost of living that primarily serves as a place to sleep for those who travel to more urban areas for work. A decent length’s drive is usually required to find things to do. This is all too true for Slatington, according to Robert Berger.

“If you’re familiar with Slatington, you know there’s not much going on,” explained Berger.

“There’s no Y[MCA], no senior center, no movie theater. The closest thing for a gathering point is a bowling alley. There’s nothing in town.

If you need anything, you either go toward Whitehall or Allentown, maybe Palmerton and Lehighton, but they don’t have much either.

There’s nowhere for people to meet besides churches or school activities. There’s nowhere to socialize … at all.”

Berger and Michelle Raber sought to rectify that with the vision of a community center. In 1997, they sat down in Berger’s house and outlined their hopes to see a central location in town where residents could gather for both recreation and education. Such lofty ambitions had to start somewhere and they chose to try to build on an existing organization that had successfully launched back in the ‘60s.

“There was a Playground Association that was started by the superintendent of schools,” said Berger. “It was volunteers from all the playgrounds in the school district that came together and put on a summer recreation program. It provided things for kids to do during the summer mornings or afternoons at each playground.”

That continued until the ‘80s, when there was then a push for the association to become a nonprofit 501(c)(3), which they did. Funding came from the three municipalities with a big helping hand from the United Way. When those funds dried up almost two decades later, that was when Raber and Berger decided it was time to build something permanent and long-lasting, and with a group effort on behalf of everyone who wanted to see it come to fruition, they established the Northern Lehigh Community Center

“If it was going to happen, it had to come from the residents,” said Berger. “We were bringing three municipalities together and also working with the state.”

They still operated as the Playground Association, as Berger said it would’ve been too difficult to start over and deal with the state regulations. They put together their bylaws and Constitution. Local presidential representatives were initially involved as well as various playgrounds and other organizations, which eventually evolved into their board of directors, most of whom are volunteers. Their mission statement: “To touch the lives of people in the area from tots to seniors.”

After slogging through “miles of red tape,” the organization has been implementing programs, activities, and functions for all ages ever since, even without the actual tangible center.

“Programs were created based on the need at the time,” said Berger. “We’ve had skiing clinics, tennis and soccer clinics, you name it. We do bus trips. We’ve gone to New York, to Phillies games, to wineries. If there’s an idea and we can explore it, we’ll do it. The problem we run into right now in this area is the lack of facilities we have available to us.”

They utilize a couple local fire halls and churches for everything from yoga and Zumba classes to arts and crafts and Girl Scout meetings. “All of those things will eventually move over to the community center,” said Raber.

They spent countless years fundraising like crazy in order to be able to finally start construction.

“We’ve done everything,” said Berger. “We did an animal touch program. We’ve done carnivals, Halloween parades, a North Pole event. There’s something every month. It’s been fun.” And they managed to do it all without a central location.

Through it all, the community has supported them even when it looked as though it would never happen.

“The school district has been wonderful to us. They always want to see us move forward,” said Raber. “We wouldn’t be at this point without them,” said Berger. He

continued, “When we first started, we had no loans. We did this from scratch. Slatington is known today as a trail town. It’s not very rich. It’s a small community and everyone’s after the same money.”

“Hopefully if people hear about it and want to be able to use it, they’ll want to help out. We’re looking for our sugar daddy!” laughed Raber. “They think it’s not going to happen; it’s been so long. But now hopefully they know that we’re for real.”

The Northern Lehigh Community Center finally broke ground on phase one in fall of 2011—nearly 14 years after its inception as an organization. The 10,000 square feet located at 545 W. Church St. will house exercise equipment, locker rooms with showers, a kitchen, and a banquet hall large enough for wedding receptions. Phase two, which will be 6,000 square feet, will be home to large gymnasium, perfect for the birthday parties Raber said people are always asking about.

They hope to see phase one come to final completion by the end of 2015, making the entire process 18 years long.

“Good things take time,” said Berger. “We’re not giving up.”

“Two of the highlights for me is when I came here and saw the kids who don’t play organized sports; they have nothing to do,” said Raber. “That drove me to work on this project, to help them, and another thing is that even though it’s taken this long, and some days I want to throw in the towel, I can’t because that’s not showing the kids to stick to something and get it done. They have to see a role model do that.”

“Michelle is still enthused and so am I,” said Berger.

“We may moan and groan, but we have too much invested.

This is our contribution to the community. We want to be a resource. We want to bring the community together and get kids away from the TV and video games; they’re losing their social skills!”

Slatington may be a small town, but the NLCC aims to show residents that they can still get out and do things. “It could be a very vibrant area, we just need a little push to get going,” said Berger.

Their ultimate goal is to see the center become a place for both physical and education activities. “We want it to be a fun place, for all ages,” said Raber. They envision classes for art and music, cooking and computers. They imagine the hours will be from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

“We see the need,” said Berger. “It’s like a snowball going down a hill; someone has to start it rolling.”

Off The Shelf Diabetes Talk at Slatington Library

Each month a new topic will be explored and a diabetes-friendly recipe will be distributed (there could be samples). She wrote articles and provided photos for multiple markets including newspapers, magazines and books. Library To Get A Makeover

Makeover plans include replacing the carpet throughout the library, replacing the front desk, and revamping the floor plan. These changes will make the library more comfortable and more efficient. Library staff is also hoping to make even more improvements including more seating, compact shelving, and adding a new coat of paint, but funds are limited. Submitted by DIANE DANIELSON The Palmerton Area Library located at 402 Delaware Avenue in Palmerton will be offering a new series of Computer Classes beginning in March.

Classes offered will include Beginners, Advanced (which will cover Word Processing and Microsoft Excel), Basic Digital Camera Operation and Photo Editing and Learning the iPad/Tablet and other Mobile Devices. All of these classes are taught at the library on Thursdays evenings. Class size is limited and the classes fill up quickly so call the library at 610-826-3424 or stop in the library if you wish to sign up for a class.

The library is planning many events for the coming year. On March 30, the library will host their annual Photography Show from 2 through 4 p.m.

This year, the attorneys and staff of Steckel & Stopp collected $750 and had the honor on Jan. 10 of presenting it to the Director of Slatington Public Library, Rosanne Pugh, who came to Steckel & Stopp Law Office at 1036 Main Street to accept a donation. (You’re not alone.) Try these instead; they couldn’t be any easier.

1. Buy some cute and colorful straws from a baking website such as www.bakeitpretty. com and cut a small slit in the bottom of each marshmallow (or risk smushing them) before insertion.

2. Freeze for 5-10 minutes to ensure they won’t slide off during dipping process. Meanwhile, melt white chocolate in microwave, stirring every 30 seconds. Add food coloring if desired.

3. Dip in chocolate and gently scrape excess.

What we are, however, thinking on right now, is how much our PA Dutch forefathers depended on living things to determine how the weather would develop through the winter. Just the first [thing] that they watched was the brown wooly caterpillars which crawled all around during fall.

If they were very black [more black than brown], that told them it would give a hard winter.

They also scrutinized the wool of the sheep and the hair on the dog. If the sheep had a heavy fleece and the dog a thick coat, that foretold of a cold winter. They always considered that God takes good care of the living things [creatures], before he would let winter set in. The bristles on the pigs and the hairs on horses and cows predicted the same thing. When the snow geese flew south early that meant that winter would set in early.

When the dog barked at the moon in the evening that said a cold is spell coming. The cat was also closely watched. When the cat curled up to her tail as she slept that predicted a storm coming. It was also said that if a cat sunned itself in February, it will be again be [found] under the stove in March.

Many people also rely on the goose bone at Thanksgiving. Some people today want to say what kind of winter it will be when they read the goose bone. [The breastbone of a goose, as

practiced in Berks and Lehigh Counties: Fogel, Edwin m.; Beliefs and Superstitions of the Pennsylvania Germans.] If they are right or not, we will let that go and let that remain the way it is.

One thing that we ought to watch is if the rooster crows from the top of the manure pile. When he does, that foretells of a change in weather coming.

And that is what we are all looking for!

Celebrating 50 Years of Traveling Down The Winding Road Of Life Submitted by ROGER SMITH Bob and Connie Reinhart celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary ‘ to the day’ on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at Woodstone Country Club. They met while both were attending Penn State University and they were married at the Helen Eakin Eisenhower Chapel on the Penn State campus.

Bob brought his young wife back to Palmerton where he went to work at the New Jersey Zinc Company. They shared a love of photography and both made a hobby of it. Shortly after being married, they started a family with the birth of their first child, their daughter Cindy. Shortly after, their second child, Bob, arrived. A threeroom apartment would not do, so they bought a nice little place on Princeton Avenue in Palmerton.

It turned out to be such a great place, they still reside there now.

The couple joined the Palmerton Camera Club where Connie was President for many years; they are still very active in the club today. Club meetings were held at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where Connie sings in the choir. She still sings with the choir and the club still meets there Your friends at

The anniversary party was attended by family and friends from the many paths the couple had taken. Dining, dancing and a great time was had by all. The high note of the evening was the roast/ toast to the couple given by their grandson, Ben.

Lehigh Township Launches New and Improved Website

By JOE KORBA Lehigh Township has recently launched a new website to keep the people in the community informed of news, events, and much more. The site, designed by na studios, is fully responsive, meaning it adapts to whatever device you are viewing it on, whether it be a cell phone, computer or tablet. It is also easier to navigate and offers many new features that weren’t available on the old site. The cell phone accessibility allows residents to load the website for information in an emergency.

“We can do emergency bulletins even if electricity is down. You’ll still have access,” said Cindy Miller, Lehigh Township Supervisor.

has a navigable bar of links and includes historical photos as well as general township contact information and news.

“The website should be the central information and communication hub of the Township,” Miller said.

4-H Tree Seedling Sale Underway Submitted by JANICE MARTIN The Northampton County 4-H program is once again sponsoring the annual tree seedling sale.

This sale benefits the 4-H youth in the county, supporting various programs such as camp, fair, trips, achievement banquet, and the clubs in general. The pick-up date for the trees is Saturday, April 26 at various pick-up locations, including a location in Lehigh County. Trees must be ordered

by March 1 to guarantee availability.

The trees offered this year are: Eastern White Pine, Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Douglas Fir, Concolor Fir, Sugar Maple, Red Oak, White Oak, American Arborvitae, Japanese White Birch, and White Flowering Dogwood. The tree seedlings are offered in bundles of 10 per type.

Prices start at $10 per bundle; multiple bundle discounts are available.

New this year is an offering of fruit trees. These will be sold as individual trees for $11 per tree. Being offered this year are: Nittany Apple, Shrizuka Apple, Aunrise Pear, Seckel Pear, Raritan Rose Peach, Redhaven Peach, Redgold Nectarine, Artic Glo Nectarine, Montmorency Cherry, and Hedelfingen Cherry.

1; orders received after that date will be filled on the availability of trees. Zion Opera Workshop To Present “The Pajama Game” For Its 2014 Performance

Submitted by BRAD CRESSLY Smith Auditorium of Zion United Church of Christ in Lehighton is currently filled with pajamas but there is very little sleeping going on! The cast and crew of Zion Opera Workshop are feverishly working in preparation of for their production of “The Pajama Game.” The musical is based on the book 7 1/2 Cents by Richard Bissell. The musical was created by Bissell and George Abbott, with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross (the creators of “Damn Yankees”).

This show was originally presented in 1954 and won the Tony award for best musical that year.

It tells the story of factory workers in the Sleep Tite pajama factory in their quest for a 7.5 cent raise. In the midst of this ordeal, love blossoms between Babe (played by ZOW veteran actress Jessica Schafer), the grievance committee head, and Sid (played by ZOW newcomer Chris Pavlick), the new factory superintendent. Jessica Shafer is also the stage director for the performance and has appeared in many lead roles in Zion Opera

Workshop. Although Pavlick is a newcomer to Zion Opera Workshop, he is no stranger to the musical stage. He has performed in many musical productions in Hazleton and beyond.

The show is filled with crazy and hilarious characters including Heinzie who is played by ZOW’s very own Dave Krum who has been with the group since 1976 and his comedic sidekick and love interest, Gladys, played by Becky Herd who is returning for her third performance with the group. Other lead characters include Mae (played by Evy Heckman), Prez (played by Josiah Behrens), Mr. Hasler (Brandon Cressley) and Mabel (Laura Cressley).

Other characters in the show include Poopsie (Casi Reichard), Brenda (Tara Crowe), Max (Doug Rau), Joe (Adam Reichard) and Pop (James Blakeslee). Rounding out the cast are factory workers, singers and dancers including Martha Cox, Matt Poirer, Noah Smith, Tina Becker, Mikayla Blakeslee, Lexi Young, Tim Herd, Aleigh Smith, Thomas Phelan, Ben Glueck, April Walker, Schyler Cordova, Nathan Kroboth, Sophie Coombe, Erin McGinley, Kristin Campbell, Brian Kesek, Jessie Salinas, Candace Malcowicz, Emily Snyder, Miguel Gonzalez, Parker Fairchild, Chris Short, Autumn Williams, Bethany Evans and Ashley Harrington.

The show is filled with larger than life characters and wonderful banter with a touch of romance thrown in. Solo and group dance numbers are choreographed by ZOW’s resident choreographer, Deb Strausberger from TNT Dance. Memorable songs from the show include Hernando’s Hideaway and Steam Heat. As always, the show will be accompanied by ZOW’s live orchestra.

Most of the action takes place in the Sleep Tite Pajama factory. The stage at Zion is being transformed into the factory complete with sewing machines as well as various other sets including a realistic looking 1950s apartment kitchen. The stage design, construction and props are ably handled by Zion Opera Workshop’s technical directors, Pati and Duane Reichard with backdrop design by Ben Glueck.

The show will be presented on Thursday, Feb. 27, Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a matinee performance on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. Advanced tickets are recommended for all performances as it is anticipated they will sell out.

The Valentine’s Day Cliché: RomComs

Let’s talk Valentine’s Day … I’ve seen one or two (or ten or 100) too many romantic comedies and I have to say, Garry Marshall’s 2010 ensemble spin on the holiday itself really threw the whole thing into perspective. Admittedly, I spend almost every February 14 as Jessica Biel’s character—openly bitter and armed with a weapon to ward off Cupid’s arrow.

Valentine’s Day has always been the most overly hyped holiday in my book. Maybe this is because I was robbed of a sweet romantic gesture on this day back in high school, who knows. But I still don’t think we should dedicate one day a year to telling someone how we feel. That should kind of happen every day. Which brings me into this nice segway here … love stories. Ironic, right? I’m anti V-Day, but I love love? Well, sure.

It’s easy to get swept up in a great love story. It’s the backbone of nearly every box office hit. We root for it. Anyway, with the dreaded day right around the corner, I figured now could be a good time to wax rhapsodic about my favorite fairy tales.

So, here are the soul mates who have given me hope that I’ll eventually find mine:

Enchanted, 2007 | Starring Patrick Dempsey & Amy Adams:

This is my default bad mood movie. I absolutely adore it. Technically it doesn’t quite qualify as a typical romcom; it is Disney, after all. But it’s funny and such an adorable mash-up of their best classic animation moments with a modern live-action flair. The cast is excellent and it should be noted that in a showdown with Prince Charming (‘scuse me, Edward) and McDreamy, the winner may surprise you. The songs make me smile, it’s set in my favorite city, and it always makes me feel better, no matter what.

2. A Walk to Remember, 2002 | Starring Shane West & Mandy Moore:

When everyone hears the name, “Nicholas Sparks,” their minds immediately go to the heart-breaking story of the aging Allie who can no longer remember her true love, Noah, in The Notebook. It’s THE Nicholas Sparks movie, right? WRONG! The first one I saw, and it remains my favorite to this day, is A Walk to Remember. I was in eighth grade when it came

TT: In your opinion, what is the biggest different between the WWE of today and the WWE you were a part of?

GS: “When I was wrestling, we pushed the envelope a little more. Now it is more corporate and they have to cater to the sponsors. It is all PG13. It wasn’t PG-13 when I was there. My storyline, they wouldn’t be able to do today. In that aspect it is totally different. I’m glad it wasn’t PG-13 back when I started. Back when I was there, the crazier the storyline, the better.”

TT: Why did you leave the WWE? GS: “I left on good terms. I had a meeting with Vince [McMahon, WWE Chairman and CEO] and told him that I am not here to just collect a paycheck. They weren’t doing too much with me story-wise and I was frustrated. For a while, I went back and forth with the writers with ideas and nothing went anywhere. It was just general frustration. I was never on the bench growing up and being a benchwarmer for the WWE was not my cup of tea.”

TT: When did you feel that you truly belonged in the big time of the WWE?

GS: “I felt like I did from day one, to be honest with you. I always felt like I could do this stuff and I always knew that I had a good grasp of my character. I was in the OVW, the developmental system, for a couple months and I had a good idea of what I wanted to do with my character. At no time, did I ever think that I wasn’t good enough or that I shouldn’t be there.”

TT: What is the biggest secret about the WWE that you can reveal?

GS: “It is not as glamorous as people think it is. People think that they shuttle you around in limousines and corporate jets, but that is not the case.

We fly in on a normal airline, like everyone else, meet at a central location, and get a rental car. We are responsible for our hotels. All of that is coming out of our own pockets. The only thing they provided was the flight. A lot of people think they roll out the red carpet for you, but they don’t.

That is probably the biggest misconception in wrestling at that level. There is a lot of times where we are driving for hours to the next town and 1, 2 o’clock in the morning, struggling to stay awake. There were plenty of nights where I was taking two cans of Red Bull and Fat Burner just to stay awake. It isn’t as glamorous as you think.”

Heart-Shaped Memory Box

Over the next few weeks, thousands of heartshaped boxes filled with chocolates large and small will be given as gifts for Valentine’s Day. When the box is empty, you can save the token, make it into a unique decoration for your living room, and put your love on display for years to come. Making the Heart-Shaped Memory Box is a creative way to walk down memory lane and recycle the chocolate box.

What you will need: •Heart-shaped chocolate box •One or two pictures of you and your loved one •Mementos from your relationship: movie tickets, concert tickets, first date receipts, etc.

•Glue stick •A sheet or two of scrapbook paper •Push pins

Steps to crafting a lovely heart-shaped memory box: Step 1. Using a clean and empty heart-shaped candy box, trace the pattern on a sheet of scrapbook paper. You may need to use two sheets to cover a larger box.

As always, cover your workspace with newspaper or an old tablecloth. Gather your supplies and set your iPod to romance to help set the mood to make this heartfelt décor for your home.

Bulldogs Not Missing A Beat On The Mats

After losing a state title-winning coach in Todd Herzog and a repeat state medalist in his son, Ty, last season, many were left thinking a down year was in the future of Northern Lehigh wrestling.

Oh, how they were wrong.

Behind first-year head coach, a former Bulldog wrestler himself, Steve Hluschak, NLHS has experienced one of its best team seasons in recent years. As of Jan. 31, they owned a 13-6 record overall and a 6-3 record in the Colonial League.

Their 13 win total qualified the Bulldogs for the District 11 Team Duals and the new points ranking system delivered them the fourth seed in the bracket.

“Did I expect to be the fourth seed in districts?”

Hluschak asked. “Absolutely not. I expected to see success. I knew we would get the kids to come out to the program and wrestle compared to some of the years in the past. I knew, for many reasons, that we were going to improve on what they did

Hluschak is improving with a young line-up as well. His roster includes only three seniors, Zach Leiby, Theo Young and Jayden Peters. However, his match line-up includes wrestlers from all grades as freshman Jason Schaffer, Austin Hemingway and Ryan Farber all are viable wrestlers who pick up key team points in any given match.

“Todd was a great coach here,” Hluschak said of the quick turnaround. “But I think these kids benefitted from having a new voice in the room.

They have been coached two different ways now and with my coaching credentials, they believed in me. In coaching, you have to have a program and have confidence and believe in it.”

“My coaching staff and I have been successful everywhere we have gone,” he added. “So there is no reason to change what we are doing.”

improved from last year and it is noticeable on the mats. As sophomore Matt Schmall, according to Hluschak, is poised to qualify for regionals and possibly even a run in Hershey.

The aforementioned Farber, as a freshman, in the coach’s words, “is a legit wrestler,” as he has picked up nearly 20 individual wins in just his freshmen season.

His older brother, Nate, is a junior and is a leader on the team along with one of the most improved in the room. Along with him in leadership is fellow junior Austin Arnold.

On day one of the two-day team district duals on Jan. 30, Northern Lehigh earned a first-round bye with their fourth seed and faced Colonial League foe Catasauqua, who the Bulldogs lost to by one point in the regular season.

The Bulldogs earned their revenge and defeated the Rough Riders 39-31 to advance in the doubleelimination tournament and will face nationally ranked Bethlehem Catholic on Feb. 1 (which occurred after deadline for this issue).

Hluschak, who is a former Bulldog football player, related the tournament to a postseason game on the gridiron.

“Every match is like a district playoff game,” he said. “If there is a district playoff game on a Friday night, then that is a very big game. We will need to bring our A game.”

The Bulldogs have graded high all season and already exceeded expectations. Passing a few more tests will be just extra credit towards a bright future on the mats for Northern Lehigh.
