Bath Borough Authority customers Will see decrease in Their next bill

By KERI LINDENMUTH Residents who use the Bath Borough Authority for their water and sewer needs will notice a slight decrease in their next quarterly bill. The Bath Borough Authority Board of Directors has announced a $5 reduction in customers’ quarterly surcharge, bringing the total down to $65 per customer (or per EDU for commercial customers). This reduction was approved during the Board’s February 16 meeting and will be reflected in customers’ next quarterly sewer charge.

This reduction comes after a $70 surcharge for all residential and commercial customers was implemented in 2021. The goal of the surcharge was to help the authority make payments on a $13 million loan from the USDA, which was taken out to pay for a new state-of-the-art sewer plant. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection mandated the plant. The reason for this reduction, says the Authority, is due to the USDA reducing their loan interContinued on page 2

Northampton Borough Council explores Community improvement Opportunities, reports On fire department By KERI LINDENMUTH During their March 17 meeting, the Northampton Borough Council received a presentation from Victor Rodite, community planner. Rodite has been instrumental in helping the borough apply for and receive grants for community improvements like parks, pavilions, and infrastructure. The borough has recently been awarded an $80,000 grant from

the Community Development Block Program. Rodite presented several ideas for improvements to council and asked them to start exploring projects they would like to see done. Rodite suggested several park improvements, including new bathrooms or pavilions at the northern end of Canal Street Park. However, some councilContinued on page 2

Looking by Back Ed Pany Civil War veteran Theodore Howell, Part 1 of 4 We received a call from Mr. Aaron Schisler, well-known local funeral director. He had a valuable chapter of local history he wished to share with our loyal readers. Mr. Schisler handed me a notebook containing a treasure of local history - letters written by Capt. Theodore Howell, our community’s most celebrated Civil War veteran. They were written in 1862 and 1863. We had written about Capt. Howell in some columns a number of years ago. The family originally came from New Jersey during the Colonial era and purchased a grist mill on the Hokendauqua Creek formerly owned by Hugh Wilson, one of the founders of what is now the borough of Northampton. In 1844, Joseph Howell sold the mill to John Howell, the father of Capt. Theodore Howell. Theodore would marry Mary Levan, a member of a prominent Allen Township family. They were blessed with a large family. The advent of the Civil War divided the nation. Howell enlisted in October 1862. He canvassed Allen Township for recruits and was unanimously elected captain of Company D, 153rd Penn-

On July 22, 1863, he was honorably discharged and returned home. He writes: “Camp near Potomac Creek, December 1862 Dearest Mary, We are still in our old camp and expect to remain here for Continued on page 4

est rate from 2.75% to 1.75%. The Authority also allocated $1 million in its reserve fund (collected from tapping fees) toward the plant. The Authority continues to explore ways to further reduce the

surcharge. Says George Gasper, Chairman of the Board of Directors, “As the Authority’s customer base increases, it may allow for future reductions in the quarterly surcharge.” The new sewer plant went online in 2021, replacing the Authority’s 1965 plant. It has a capacity of 510,000 gallons per day. It features piping upgrades, a

UV disinfection system, a rotary press, two batch reactor tanks, two aerobic digester tanks, an equalization tank, and a control building. The Bath Borough Authority Board of Directors meets on the third Wednesday of every month at the Bath Borough Authority building at 7 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.

March 24-30, 2022 3

"This is a heartbreaking tragedy that occurred while these troopers were protecting and serving," said Gov. Wolf. "This mournful incident is a stark reminder of the risks—and sacrifices—our law enforcement officers undertake every day to keep us safe. My heart goes out to their families and the communities they lived in and served."

Trooper Martin Mack III, left, and Trooper Branden Sisca, right.

Submitted by PSP Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Commissioner Robert Evanchick confirmed Monday that Trooper Martin F. Mack III, 33, and Trooper Branden T. Sisca, 29, were struck and killed by a driver early Monday morning on I-95 south in the area of milepost 18 in Philadelphia City, Philadelphia County. A male pedestrian was also struck and killed at the same time. The troopers were dispatched after receiving reports of a man walking on I-95 south. As they were helping him into the back of their cruiser, the female suspect attempted to drive past the scene. She fatally struck all three and the cruiser just before 1 a.m. and remained at the scene. "Our department is heartbroken with the tragedy that occurred early this morning in Philadelphia," said Colonel Evanchick. "We ask our fellow Pennsylvanians to keep the families of our troopers and the pedestrian in their thoughts. This is an extremely difficult time."

Mack enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police in November 2014 and graduated as a member of the 141st cadet class. Sisca enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police in February 2021 and graduated as a member of the 161st cadet class. Both troopers spent their entire careers assigned to the Patrol Section of Troop K, Philadelphia.

The Moravian Historical Society (MHS) is pleased to announce its newest publication, “Tracing the Earliest Moravian Activity in the Mid-Atlantic: A Guide” is now available. The book, researched and written by Scott Gordon, is beautifully designed by Heather Reinert. The volume traces sites and structures from the Moravians’ earliest activity in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. During their first two decades in the mid-Atlantic region, Moravians preached the gospel, built churches, established missions and schools, and launched ships. In most cases, little remains at these locations to mark this extraordinary work. This guide describes these places and provides addresses, when possible, so that users can visit the sites. The 32-page volume is in full color with richly illustrated images and maps. On Saturday, April 9 at 4 p.m., Scott Gordon will discuss the process of researching the book and the challenges of tracing the earliest Moravian sites, some of which no longer exist. The talk is free. Seating is limited, registration in advance is requested through our website: moravianhistory.org. The book can be purchased from the Moravian Historical Society through its online store, moravianhistory.org/store, or at the museum store located inside the Whitefield House. Located in Nazareth, Pennsylvania the Moravian Historical Society is open every day from 1 to 4 p.m. Special thanks are due to our sponsors who provided funding for the publication, Moravian Village of Bethlehem and Moravian University. Founded in 1857, the Moravian Historical Society is one of the oldest historical societies in Pennsylvania. MHS maintains the 1740–1743 Whitefield House and the 1740 Gray Cottage, the oldest surviving Moravian structure in North America. The Moravian Historical Society shares the fascinating stories of the Moravians and their contributions to worldwide culture through educational programs, guided tours, engaging museum exhibits, publications, and public activities.

Natural perspectives For the health-minded individual

May I Ask You a Question?

by DR. GLENN CLEARIE, DC

By and large, a significant part of being a Doctor of Chiropractic is asking questions. That seems rather obvious, I know, yet some questions you want to ask you simply can-

not…until I am in a closer relationship with my patients. Yes, clearly the nuts and bolts that surround the real reason to come to my office are covered: “Where is the pain?”, “What caused this?”, “Who else have you seen?”, and all the rest. These questions are covered at length so care can be appropriately rendered. When I was a younger practitioner, I thought that my job was only to address and fix as best able the pinched nerves and aching backs. Now I kind of laugh as to what decades of daily practice has shown me. While it has much to do with health and healing, it has a large component of understanding and connecting with the

person as a whole…not just their neuropathy. In fact, at this point I can’t have it any other way. If you come here, expect that. I guess in much the same way (in the early years of being a father), I simply thought being able to change a diaper quickly and efficiently put me in the running for Father of the Year! Boy, how little I knew back then. Nowadays, after caring and getting to know my patients on a deeper level, I feel I am able to ask the truly meaningful questions that can impact their health today and for many years to come. As an example, last month I asked a patient, “May I ask you a question?” The person looked at me and said, “Yes, you can ask me anything.” I responded, “Do you consume too much alcohol?” We both knew the answer from the first day we met, yet it took several weeks before this person and I were in a relationship where such matters could be earnestly discussed. Just this past week I posed “May I ask you a question?” to a woman who is one of the kindest people I know. She looked at me a little astonished and then replied, “Yes.” I asked her how she would feel 30 days from now if she took her health seriously and not for granted. Did I offend her? Probably so if I had asked her the first day we met. Yet after some many years of caring, she knows my heart is in the right place. We had such a nice conversation, one that was free from judgment, emotion, and the rest. Together, we simply looked into the future, her future, to see how much more amazing she could feel and become if she addressed what she knew was long overdue. Imagine if a doctor had asked you a similar question years ago.

Could it have perhaps reduced an ailment that afflicts you presently? We really do not know but, by golly, it sure would not have hurt any. Candidly, I’ve been asking myself similar questions as of late. “What if ” I took my health a little more seriously? How would that impact not only me, but my patients, family, or friends? At the end of the day, you need to realize that your health is extremely personal and is nothing to be taken lightly. I believe it

NAZARETH AREA During National Library Week April 3-9, Connect with your library Submitted by JILL SILVIUS During the week of April 3, the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity encourages all community members to visit their library to celebrate National Library Week. Throughout the week, free books for patrons of all ages, plus a children’s take-home craft, will be offered. On April 4 at 10 a.m., the MLNV will host

a patron appreciation reception with cookies and lemonade. On April 5 at 4 p.m., special guest Allison Didden will join staff to offer Sign Language Storytime, and on April 6 at 4 p.m., children are invited to a Stuffed Animal Storytime and Sleepover. Also that evening, teens are welcome to a new Zine Club. On April 7, both teens and adults are invited

to Harry Potter Night. April 3-9, 2022 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the essential role that libraries play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Connect with Your Library,” which promotes the idea that libraries are places to get connected to technology by using broadband, computers, and other resources. Libraries also offer opportunities to connect with media, programs, ideas, and classes, in addition to books. Most importantly, libraries also connect communities to each other.

We need your help! Moravian Hall Square is looking for dedicated volunteers to help in the Good Spirit General Store located inside Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth. Do you have an outgoing personality and can commit to 4 hours each week? We would love to have you join our team of valued volunteers. The Good Spirit General Store offers specialty gift items, cards, essential grocery items, and many other treasures. The store is run entirely by volunteers who assist residents, staff and guests as they visit the store during regular open hours - Monday-Saturday, 11AM-3PM. Full training will be given. If you have a willingness to help others, we’d love to hear from you.

The MLNV is both proud to serve and incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of its community, its four supporting municipalities: Bushkill Township, Lower Nazareth Township, Borough of Nazareth, and Upper Nazareth Township. Libraries of all types continue to go above and beyond to keep their communities connected by expanding resources and embracing inclusion in their programming, resources, and collections. Libraries across the country are making a difference in people’s lives by providing electronic resources. The MLNV is supporting the community by offering hotspots available for checkout and with services such as Flipster, Hoopla, CloudLibrary, NewsBank, TumbleBooks, TeenBookCloud, and Ancestry Library which provide instant access to newspaper archives, movies, magazines, television shows, ebooks, audiobooks, comics, and music. This National Library Week, the public can show their appreciation and support for libraries by visiting the MLNV in person and online, following them on social media, and using the hashtag #NationalLibraryWeek. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries of all types across the country each April. Throughout the year, the MLNV also offers a wide array of programs, including children’s storytimes and toddler Shake-and-Boogie, crafts for all ages, virtual and in-person author events, and multiple book discussion groups. Other special events within the upcoming few weeks include a Titanic exhibit April 11-15, virtual author event with Wanda Morris on April 19, inperson event with YA and adult author Sara Shepard on April 30,

and free comic book day on May 7, and later this summer: Journey into Reading summer reading program, June 20-August 6. Many of the MLNV’s events are designed to promote the Pennsylvania Library Association’s 21st Century Literacies Initiative, PA Forward, and its five specific literacies: basic, information, civic and social, financial, and health. For more information about the MLNV and National Library Week, visit the library’s website at www.nazarethlibrary.org or social media pages (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram).
