“I saw a lot of Black women getting hysterectomies at a young age. People die for a lack of knowledge,” she said. That led her to create an article-based platform centered around promoting health awareness for Black women.
How one organization is increasing health literacy and reducing health disparities among women of color
BY DEBORAH PHOTOGRAPHYLYNCHBYKARLO GESNER
Grigsby, a former reporter for WGAL, founded Black Girl Health in 2014 after battling fibroids and realizing that not only did she want to become more health conscious herself, but also that she wanted to help other Black women.
PLACES&PEOPLE LIFESTYLE SUSQUEHANNA STYLE | OCTOBER 202212
What Tinder has done for love lives, Porcha Grigsby’s App for Black Girl Health has the potential to do for healthy lives. Instead of meeting over drinks to find a love connection, users of her app will be able to meet up for exercise or to find someone to be a diet accountability buddy–a health connection.
Since then, along with the for-profit Black Girl Health digital marketing and outreach organization, she also started the nonprofit Black Girl Health Foundation. While the two are related, they also have quite different missions.
Black Girl Health
Although the clinic is in Maryland—and Grigsby herself lives in White Plains, MD, with her husband and 4-year-old son—Black Girl Health has an office in Harrisburg, where Grigsby lived when she worked for WGAL as Porcha Johnson. Don’t let these brick and mortar buildings fool you—the reach for Black Girl Health and BGH Foundation is much, much larger. While many professional members, newsletter subscribers, and social media followers are in the Central Pennsylvania and Maryland areas, BGH has members and followers everywhere from the West Coast to Texas to New Jersey.
The sense of community Grigsby has been cultivating is what Montrella Cowan, a holistic licensed psychotherapist, certified life coach, author, and speaker from Washington, D.C., already appreciates about Black Girl Health. As a professional partner (for a fee of $100/ year), Cowan said BGH is “good at building relationships and has a track record of success…There’s a community. It’s a movement,” Cowan said. “Definitely, it’s forged a community standing for health and wellness in the Black community.”
BGH focuses on digital media, health awareness, and is 8(a) certified, which is a federal government certification that allows it to do business with government agencies. It offers professional memberships to health care providers and businesses who gain audience while also providing expertise for the organization’s content. It will also be the home for the Black Girl Health app, which will be free for basic users. The app will allow users from across the country to find health professionals, will provide live and recorded videocasts of everything from discussions on a specific health topic to live yoga classes to nutrition sessions, and will help users to match with like-minded individuals who share interests while providing a platform for in-person meetups in their community.

Black Girl Health
This past June, Black Girl Health Foundation was one of 50 recipients of the Black Women Impact grants program, part of the One Million Black Women initiative by Goldman Sachs to fund Black women-led and Black women-serving nonprofits. What that means is that BGH Foundation will share in $10 million worth of grants ranging from $50,000-$250,000 for each of the next two years. It was chosen from among 800 applicants.
The BGH Foundation also recently launched the BGH Clinic for Women’s Health in Oxon Hill, MD, the BGH Clinic for Women’s Health, which offers telehealth and some in-person mental health services.
The BGH Foundation, meanwhile, is mainly focused on outreach—providing workshops for underserved Black women around the country facilitated by its college ambassadors, and working with community partners to improve the health of Black women in urban communities. Three of its biggest programs are the Minds Matter (helping women and girls of color live healthy lifestyles through education, engagement, and empowerment), The Superwoman Project (helping new mothers in every aspect of their lives), and I’m A Survivor (a 30-day campaign every October focused around breast cancer awareness). Exercise and nutrition are key components.
Patrice Guzman, the college ambassador program manager for BGHF, estimates that the organization currently reaches more than 10,000-15,000 women a year through its multitude of programming and online resources. Guzman, who also obtains grants for the organization, says, “I really just believe in the mission and the work that we’re doing. Although we’re a really small organization right now, we definitely have the potential to grow into a powerful resource within the different communities we serve.”
It’s clear that BGH and BGHF are bringing women together and creating community. Looking for a health partner? Swipe right.
One of BGH’s signature events, the National Kickstart Health and Wellness Program, will return to live programming in June 2023 (the last was pre-Covid in 2019) with a health and wellness expo in Washington, D.C. To learn more about this, other events, and the two organizations, go to blackgirlhealth.com or blackgirlhealthfoundation.org.

Sitting at a desk all day is one of the leading causes of weakened spines, which can contribute to back pain and the aging process. This is why many doctors recommend using a standing desk. What else can you do, on the job?
Back pain, unfortunately, will affect nearly all of us at some point. According to the National Institutes of Health, 8 out of 10 people experience back pain during their lifetime. Additionally, back pain is the world’s leading cause of disability. However, most back pain is caused by mechanical issues and non-organic causes—not by medical conditions such as cancer, fractures or arthritis. So how can we prevent our backs from hurting?
Your spine, or backbone, is essential! It gives your body support and structure, as the key connector of your musculoskeletal system. Give yourself a pat on the back because you have your back to thank for key movements like standing and walking. Here’s how to “give back” by showing your spine some love this month, in honor of World Spine Day on October 16.
• Key vitamins for bone health include: Calcium, Vitamins D and K, Magnesium, and Potassium.
Back in the Game
• Collagen-boosting foods that keep connective back tissues healthy include: Manganese, Omega-3, Vitamins A and C, and Sulfur.
Maintaining a healthy weight is a key factor for spinal health. That’s because a few extra pounds can add additional stress to the back. Those bones and connective tissues can weaken with age, so eating a healthy, nutrient-dense diet is also important.
Sources: The National Institutes of Health, the Mayo Clinic, WorldSpineDay.org, and the National Spine Health Foundation
• Rest well: Your mattress should minimize any curve in the spine, so look for those rated “medium firmness,” and avoid long periods of inactivity. A healthy spine is active during the day and well-rested at night—a daily practice that’s sure to bring sweet dreams.
The Back Story: Why Spine Health Matters
• Some of the best foods for back health? Leafy green veggies such as spinach, packed with Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Manganese, and Vitamins K and A.

How to WithoutBendBack Strain
Have you ever bent over to pick something up and felt a twinge in your back? You’re not alone—it’s a common injury. Here’s how to properly bend, without adding stress or strain to your spine, according to the National Spine Health Foundation: Don’t bend at the waist. Instead, bend at your knees. Use the strength of your leg muscles to lift your body—and whatever it is you’re picking up—and stand back up.

Top Tips for Strong Spines
• Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes with no or low heels.
• Cat-cow yoga stretches
• Set a timer to remind yourself to move frequently.

• Get up from your desk frequently, even doing gentle stretches.
What types of exercises are best for your back? Those that focus on core strength, abdomen, and back muscles all keep your spine strong. Here are a few back-building exercises, according to the Mayo Clinic:

An open floor plan and high ceilings with a lofted second floor allows visitors to take everything in at once, including the vibrantly preserved moss wall. Bar 1888, the central feature of the Market, is named after the year in which the original building was constructed. The building’s interior design seamlessly combines historical elements of the building with a modern and sleek industrial aesthetic.
The sounds of busy workers or tourists taking a moment out of their day to embrace the smell of spices and sweets that waft from the old market building on the corner of Queen and Vine in Lancaster City brings the brick structure full circle to its one-hundred year past as a Farmer’s Market with a modern twist. Southern Market opened its doors this past January as an innovative food hall, office space, and small business incubation hub.
OCTOBER 2022 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE 19
The original concept of the incubator was for young or new chefs to start their business in the market with the support to eventually grow into their own space. Senior Vice President of Culinary Services for Willow Valley Communities, Sharon Habanec, works closely with each of the Market’s chefs to ensure their success. She explains that the food is prepared fresh daily in a communal commercial kitchen, increasing the collaborative nature of the process. Within eight months of opening, previous vendor Savoy Truffle has already moved into its own location in Lancaster, showcasing the incubator’s success.
The beauty of the market is in more than just its architecture. Ballentine describes the Market’s unique position in the city, stating “You can’t go anywhere else and get ten different cuisines in one place in the city. It showcases the rich cultural diversity of Lancaster and the people in our community.” Habanec loves to bring her family because it saves everyone from having to agree on a cuisine. Instead, a wide array of plates can be shared with no rush to leave, allowing visitors to savor the experience.
Each table is equipped with a QR Code that enables diners to pull up every menu. Southern Market offers everything from Latin Cuisine, to Middle Eastern, to Southern staples. Pho Life is a popular choice with customers, with pho options ranging from medium rare beef, to well done brisket, to vegetarian pho, all simmered in a savory, warming broth. For something fresh, head to Akhi Sushi and grab a Classic Hawaiian Poke Bowl or one (or several) of their many rolls.
Chris Ballentine, Community Engagement Manager for Willow Valley Communities, explains that under-utilized locations in the city were identified several years ago, including the intersection where the market sits. Addressing its underuse, Lancaster Equity offered a successful proposal for Southern Market’s potential transformation. And, after securing the vacant LNP building (across the street from Southern Market) as the future site of Mosaic, 55+ residential city living, Willow Valley Communities joined the Southern Market revitalization project as the developing partner and operator. Ballentine notes, “This project fits beautifully within the Mayor’s strategic plan for developing the City of Lancaster, and we’re proud to be a part of that initiative.”
Southern Market
While individual chef stations offer a wide variety of beverages such as Dominican sodas, Thai iced tea, and milkshakes, the market is home to a coffee shop and a bar. Butter and Bean, operating on earlier hours than the market, is the perfect stop for a caffeinated fix whether your preference is a hot black coffee or an ice-cold frappe or cold brew. The Tea Lattes are Ballentine’s pick. The Parisian Mist is a cozy concoction of lady grey tea with a touch of lavender and vanilla syrup, steeped in the milk of your choice.
Bar 1888’s cocktail menu frequently changes by offering recipes that pair with the unique cuisines surrounding it, while providing modern spins on the classics such as the Armored Car and 1888 Martini. Bar 1888 also features six rotating draft beers from Pennsylvania microbreweries, in addition to six draft wines ranging from sparkling white to cabernet.

SUSQUEHANNA STYLE | OCTOBER 202220
The Chicken Shawarma at Flavors of Morocco is a favorite of both Ballentine and Habanec. The flavors are as colorful and bright as the dish itself, which features chicken breast marinated in yogurt and spices on a bed of yellow rice, accompanied by beets, carrots, and eggplant tossed in fresh herbs. Pizzeria 211’s entrance lies right before the Market’s open floor plan, allowing them to accommodate additional hours to serve up its classic pies and subs.
The market features weekly events to bring people together, including trivia nights, trivioke, DJ’s, live music, and more. In an effort to be a community gathering place and to utilize all of the space the vast building has to offer, event spaces are available for gatherings such as bridal showers and board meetings. In-house catering is supplied vendors of your choice. Whether you come out to grab lunch on a workday or to sit at the bar on a Saturday night with friends, the market has something for everyone, along with plenty of reasons and dishes to keep coming back for more.

To help you reset your beauty routine from the inside out, we're sharing some of our favorite tips and beauty essentials for you to try this fall.
CHECKLIST Fall
Your hair's health requires maintenance and the right products to keep it strong and healthy. This fall, be sure to prioritize your hair, ensure your nutrition supports its healthy growth, and read product labels before using shampoos, conditioners, and more on your scalp.
s the seasons change, fall is the perfect time to step back from your usual beauty routine and evaluate what's working for you and what could use a little refresh. The transition from summer to autumn often means cooler temperatures, less time outdoors, and a possible shift in your diet. These factors can all influence your health and wellness, from hair, skin, and nails, to your emotional and nutritional well-being happening inside.
Prioritize your skin's hydration by using products that lock in its natural moisture, including facial oils, serums, and moisturizers.
SKINHAIR
Much like your hair, your skin requires prioritization to be healthy, glowing, and well-cared for. It is your largest organ, after all! Especially with the shift in weather, it's essential to get into a good skin routine, and remember that skin includes more than just your
Schedule a trim for your hair if you haven't had one in the past six months. Hair needs a refresh every six months or so to encourage new growth and eliminate split ends and other damage.

that you're getting enough collagen in your diet to support healthy hair. If you don't currently take a collagen supplement, you can find everything from pill capsules and gummies to powdered drink mixes that are easy to incorporate into your current routine.
Just because the height of the summer sun has lessened does not mean your use of sunscreens should, too. Sunscreen is crucial in all seasons of the year and should be applied regularly to your face, neck, chest, and other areas of the body.
Less time outdoors means more time spent inside, often in front of screens. Look into options that protect your skin from blue light, especially during the evening. With blue light exposure in a surplus from computers, TVs, and phone screens, blue light glasses, facial sprays, and other products are available to help protect your eyes, skin, and face.
NAILS
Now that you have a standard set for your physical beauty routine, don't forget to give your inner beauty as much TLC, if not more. Inner beauty helps you glow from the inside out and is vital for all aspects of your health and wellness.
While the fall season is a great time to experiment with your own beauty routine and give it some updates where needed, it is never too late to work on these areas of your health and wellness journey. Prioritizing your health should be celebrated, and with these simple tips and tricks, it can be easier to get started than you might think.
Moisturize your nails just like your skin. When your nails get the moisture they need from hand creams and products that restore their natural oils, you'll notice healthier cuticles, softer edges, and more shine.
Take note of how your current nutritional habits affect your look and feel. Healthy, whole foods that provide energy support healthy hair, skin, and nails, while processed foods with less nutritional value can make you feel sluggish, tired, and drained of energy. Prioritize fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed foods that give your body the nutrients and vitamins it needs for daily functions.
A common theme in all areas of health and beauty is hydration. Your hair, skin, and nails will literally glow from the inside out if you're drinking enough water. But you will also feel other benefits, including more energy and faster recovery from working out. Increasing your water intake to any degree is a plus, but we recommend aiming for about 64 ounces of water (8 cups) per day.

OCTOBER 2022 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE 31
While your nails need moisture, they don't need harsh chemicals and products to dry them out. Be sure to read what ingredients are in your polishes and removers and avoid anything harsh, including the 'Toxic Trio,' formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP).
INNER BEAUTY
Whether you're a 'nail person' or not, healthy nails that are well maintained are always in good style. The good news about your nails? You don't need to schedule weekly appointments at the salon to keep them healthy (although you certainly can!). Instead, a few simple tips can ensure your nails stay as healthy as the rest of you.
Trim your nails regularly, like your hair, to encourage growth and eliminate any breakage and damage.
Sleep is critical to inner beauty and is required for your body to function. It is recommended to aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and things like reducing your blue light exposure after the sun sets can help you get to that goal.

Your leaf-peeping bucket list awaits.
We love a leisurely hike as much as the next local, but there’s something to be said about activities that get the blood pumping. In the Susquehanna Valley and surrounding areas, adventure abounds. The autumn season, with its colorful foliage and crisp air, is no exception.
If you’re looking for a thrill this fall, soar across a zipline, trek difficult terrain, raft inland white caps, and more. The best part? You won’t have to go far.
By Rachel Curry
imagine launching off a zipline platform and tossing a pumpkin to see who gets closest to the target.
According to Phil True, the official Fun Scheduler at Refreshing Mountain, their zipline is the chance for people to “have a great time overcoming fears while enjoying the outdoors.” With a mix of luxury retreats, outdoor adventures, and a wildlife center featuring one of the largest Pennsylvania native reptiles collections in the state, this place has Refreshingenergy.Mountain offers three professionalguided zipline experiences, all of which end up back at the main activities center. “We zipline through the trees,” says True, adding visitors get to enjoy thousands of Christmas lights on the zipline and trees come winter.
Come autumn, Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center in Lancaster County is home to yard games from the zipline and other activities that keep people returning season after season.
Over in the Pocono Mountains, Camelback Resort offers ziplining and other mountain adventures built on enthusiasm.
canopiesthethroughZipliningcolorful
Ziplining over the entire resort, it’s impossible not to take in the beauty and breathtaking views of the Poconos. Ahead of Halloween, guests can even zipline at night for a spooky season twist.
Near the base of Camelback Mountain, guests take a shuttle to the top of the mountain for the 4000-foot zipline experience. Four guests can ride side by side, either sitting on the Sky Riders or flying like Superman on the Sky Flyers. Double barrel 1000-foot ziplines are also available for a slightly more mild experience.
While you’re at Camelback Resort this fall, check out the year-round Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark (recently ranked #1 Indoor Waterpark by USA Today) and arcade, or wait until winter for snow sports up the wazoo.
There’s nothing like a fireside nightcap at your campsite in the woods, miles from the nearest lodging. Multi-day backpacking treks open up the senses, and Pennsylvania options are aplenty. Autumn in particular is a stunning time for a backpacking trip. By peak foliage, air has cooled for the season, but that briskness is a welcome respite during peak trekking hours, and prepared campers can stay warm at night.
Naturally, Pine Creek Outfitters also offers whitewater rafting adventures along Pine Creek, an area dubbed the Pennsylvania Grand BettersonCanyon.says, “Pine Creek varies with the water level. Typically, it is a slow-paced scenic creek with Class I-II rapids. However, at the right levels it can be quite fun and a great entrance level for inexperienced boaters.”
Jacob Batterson, office manager at Pine Creek Outfitters, says about his home base, “The remote nature of this area is what is most appealing to me—the ability to find new trails and places where you know you are utterly alone in the wilderness.”
According to Betterson, the best time of year for whitewater rafting in the area depends on the water levels at that time. (Check out the creek gauge on the Pine Creek Outfitters website.) However, autumn is past the peak dry times, which can be more beneficial

Visitors can look forward to instructional backpacking trips and overnight guided hikes on the West Rim Trail coming to Pine Creek Outfitters in the future. Before adventuring in the area, Batterson says, “A little bit of research can go a long way, because our area has very limited cell coverage.” Check the rain status, water levels, and more to prepare for your trip. (Pro tip: Bring a bear-resistant canister to store any food or scented belongings, and store it at least 100 yards downwind from where you sleep.)

for rafters seeking a thrill. “Most people who use Pine Creek as an entry level to whitewater find it very satisfying, with a perfect mix of excitement and scenery,” Betterson adds.
Pocono Whitewater offers dam release whitewater rafting in Lehigh Gorge State Park in Jim Thorpe. The 12-mile Class II–III rafting trip lasts about four hours. Other styles, like family rafting and moonlight rafting, are available for different types of Wildernessexperiences.Voyageurs in Ohiopyle offers opportunities for different skill levels in lower, middle, and upper portions of the Youghiogheny River, or the “Yough” (pronounced “Yok”) for short.

Pennsylvania has even more opportunity for whitewater rafting, including in the Poconos and Ohiopyle.
Wherever you go, the thought of getting your blood pumping while enjoying the richly colored leaves is incredible. Many places that offer whitewater rafting also provide kayaking opportunities, a solid option for people who prefer the maneuverability and independence of a kayak.
440-million-year-old Beekmantown limestone formed as a result of water erosion. What the caverns look like today is a result of millions of years of this erosion, and you can feel it for yourself (likely alongside wildlife with a penchant for caves, like Kutztown’sbats).Crystal

Regardless of whether you know what stalactites and stalagmites are, caving is an out-of-thisworld adventure that transports you to a subterranean oasis. Pennsylvania just so happens to be rich with thick limestone, which is why we have seven show caves in our state (and an estimated 1,100 private mapped caverns).
Cave has been a public-known spectacle for 145 years. Going as far as 125 feet underground, visitors can experience the innumerable crystalline formations along the cave’s walls and ceilings (hence the cave’s name).
Caving for an ancient view
For any caving experience, visitors should wear sturdy shoes that cover the foot and bring or rent a headlamp to keep hands free for easier exploring. If you’re going without a guide, make sure you understand the cave route and avoid squeezing into too-tight spots. As a final word of caution, particularly for caverns that are off the beaten path, watch out for venomous snakes that may inhabit the shallow dwellings.
Guided caving is one thing. Going solo like a true troglobite (yes, that’s a cavedwelling creature) is another level of adventurousness. If that’s more your speed, take yourself on an unguided tour of Wind Cave in Pequea. It’s a unique option for those experienced at trekking in caves or cave-like environments, or who are comfortable going deep.
Two men named William Merkel and John Gehret discovered Crystal Cave in 1871 after blasting for limestone. All these years later, the cave has kept its charm.
Indian Echo Caverns at Echo Dell in Hummelstown is open year round and, according to the facility, maintains a cool 52 degrees regardless of outside temperatures. Along the Swatara Creek, the cave cuts through

“We are all equal in the sky.”
That’s what Harv Selway, long-time skydiver, says.
Selway says it’s not the size of the drop zone that matters most. “Much, if not most, of the long-time attraction is the people you jump with.”
That community is what attracts skydivers of all experience levels to Maytown. “As a club, not a commercial operation,” Selway says, “we bring new folks into the community and they feel comfortable here, more than other places.”
Whether skydiving above the autumn scenery or another time of year, Selway says the sport is the great equalizer. Since starting in 1969, he says, “I’ve been fortunate to meet and get to know some amazing people. Some lawyers, doctors, construction workers, you name it. The only thing in common is the sport itself.”
Maytown works hard to minimize risks in what is generally considered a risk-taking sport. Selway says, “We all wear an AAD [automatic activation device] which will deploy the reserve parachute if, for some reason, the jumper can not. We all wear two parachutes. We have minimum opening altitudes for different skill levels and we take immediate action if we see risky behavior.” And, he adds, everyone jumps tandem until they’re a licensed skydiver and can jump alone.
Selway has been skydiving for longer than most people—53 years, to be precise. A retired operator for a maintenance supply distributor, he calls Maytown Sport Parachute Club at the Donegal Springs Airport in Marietta his home drop zone. “I started skydiving in 1969 with York Skydivers, and when they disbanded, I joined Maytown Skydivers back in the early 70s,” says Selway.
Not so sure about skydiving yet? That’s fair. Maytown welcomes spectators so you can see the process for yourself before deciding to literally take the leap. Here, too, you can feel the community that Maytown fosters.

Under Stoudt’s ownership, Rooster Street is expanding its repertoire of cocktails, burgers, and butcher cuts with an on-site craft brewery.
Stoudt says Rooster Street’s success is a multifaceted puzzle: “Combined with excellent food, craft cocktails from our partners at Thistle Finch and Stoll & Wolfe, and a lively atmosphere, we are a unique establishment in the heart of America’s Coolest Small Town.”
For David Stoudt, owner of Rooster Street Butcher in Lititz, getting into the restaurant biz wasn’t planned. “I always enjoyed cooking, the culinary arts, and restaurants, but I never saw myself as owning or running a restaurant— let alone a butcher shop that is transitioning into a brewery,” he says.
Rooster Street is open to even more evolution while honoring its historic roots and commitment to inclusivity. For Stoudt, the goal is to build on the foundation of Rooster Street’s previous owners, Tony and Kristina Page.
Stoudt also owns the Bulls Head Public House and Lititz Springs Inn, both local staples in and of themselves. Soon, Stoudt says, “We’ll brew craft beer for the property on Cedar Street, along with the Bulls Head, Lititz Springs Inn, and local area restaurants.” Guests will also be able to get beer to-go.
Stoudt says, “Rooster Street is a beloved part of the community, and we look forward to continuing their legacy of hospitality excellence on Cedar Street.
