A New Year & Newlyweds

Happy 2023! Welcome to our annual Weddings Issue. Inside, we’ll showcase the nuptials of three Berks County couples, serve up some big wedding inspiration with LEO Design Gallery of Wyomissing in our Living In Style feature and so much more. After all, what better way to celebrate a new year than with some local newlyweds? I don’t know about you, but I always enjoy a great love story.

Also inside this issue, we celebrate YOU! That’s right. Flip to our Check It article on page 9 for 10 ways you can indulge in some muchdeserved, and likely much-needed, self-care. While the holidays are filled with joy and laughter, they can also be hectic and somewhat stressful. These spots have the cure for that.

Now is also the perfect time to sort through your wardrobe to see what you can purge and what pieces you should be investing in. Need a bit of texture? If you answered “yes,” we have just the solution in The Look starting on page 18. From warm wool pieces to fabulous faux fur items, there are a lot of great finds to be had at local retailers.

Finally, if you’re planning a wedding or special event of your own, or if you know someone who is, don’t forget to flip to our reception guide on page 30. From small restaurant get-togethers, to functions set at bed & make breakfasts, concert halls, museums and rustic barns, the options are endless.

Cheers to the New Year!

BLOWING UP BIG FUN

When you’re looking for a fun and elegant way to dress up a celebration, look to Mon Balloon by Montse. Owner Montse Wawrzonek crafts balloon decorations with biodegradable latex balloons and fringe décor suitable for walls and ceilings. From garlands, arches, centerpieces and balloon bouquets to balloon walls and columns, backdrops and themed parties, she can do it all. Montse explains, “My designs are creative and original. The technique is called ‘organic style’ which is a trend using between four and five different balloon sizes to make a fuller, trendy, unique and fun display.” Montse started in the design industry nearly 10 years ago, but when she looked to plan her son’s first birthday party about six years ago, she discovered balloon art and took on the task of teaching herself. “My hobby became a passion and then a business,” she says. Today, her creations continue to bring her joy, but pleasing her clients is what excites her most. She says, “My favorite part is seeing happiness on their faces and knowing my creation was a success!” Find Mon Balloon by Montse on Facebook or Instagram or call 610.401.1429.

Banish the “I’m Bored”s

Winter usually equates to spending more time indoors. For families with younger members especially, that can lead to some challenges to keep them entertained. Here are a few ideas to consider…

1 . Piece it together.

Purchase a large jigsaw puzzle you can place on a table in an area where everyone can sit and work on piecing it together. Set a goal of a completion date and make it a joint mission.

2. Play with science.

Head to the Reading Science Center at 645 Penn St., Reading, and explore STEM through the more than 45 exhibits on display. It’s proof that learning can be fun! readingsciencecenter.org

3. Roll with It.

Head to Berks Lanes in Sinking Spring for some bowling fun complete with black lights, soft lounge seating and huge HD video walls. Arcade games and billiards are on hand, too. bowlero.com/ location/berks-lanes

One More Thing

Warm Up with Some Spice.

The 6th Annual West Reading Ice N’ Spice Festival is set for Jan. 27-29. Led by professional carver Danny Kissel, ice sculptors will chisel their way through hundreds of pounds of ice to craft something beautiful to see between the 400-700 blocks. Drop into local businesses for hot drinks, spicy bites and merchandise specials. Hours are Fri: 4-9pm, Sat: 11am9pm and Sun: 11am-5pm.

Bethany Children’s Home Celebrates 160 Years

FROM THE CIVIL WAR ERA TO TODAY

Bethany Children’s Home, positioned on 385 beautiful acres in Womelsdorf, is celebrating its 160th anniversary in 2023. The nonprofit has been growing and thriving since Civil War days. In fact, those days are the reason Bethany exists. Dr. Joseph Birli, President and CEO asserts, “We started in 1863. It really came out of a true need when the Civil War children were left behind due to the war and orphans just needed care.”

The aim of Bethany Children’s Home is to provide a safe place to nurture, protect and provide supportive care for residents as they grow and heal, striving toward a brighter, healthier future. Dr. Birli says, “Our mission statement has evolved, but we’ve always been doing the same thing — we’re in the business of helping children and youth and their families heal.” He continues, “That is something that hasn’t changed in 160 years.”

In its early days, the home was comprised of cottages accommodating different age groups of children, each with its own house parents. Today, a very similar design exists and in addition to aiding younger children, Bethany also serves the 18- to 21-year-old population. Dr. Birli says, “Part of the program is to gradually expose those youth, starting at 18. If they finish school, they can go to college, they can have jobs, or both, but not just live in an apartment on their own and not have support.” He continues, “When we interview the youth, we really work at ‘how can we help you be successful while you’re here?’” Bethany is also Joint Commission Accredited — the highest standard within the US — and it’s no wonder that the nonprofit has held this accreditation for many years.

AN EPIC ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

An anniversary this large deserves a celebration of epic proportions, and that’s exactly what Bethany Children’s Home has planned. Each month throughout the year, a special celebratory event is planned, aiming to really bring Bethany’s history to life. One of these special events is a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the opening of the new educational historical center. This center is located in one of the campus’ oldest buildings and its interior reveals a museum-like atmosphere, displaying archives and a history of the organization. Here you can explore the archives to uncover some fun and interesting facts including records of those who lived at Bethany dating back to the 1800s.

Other events to watch for through the year include Bingo games, a bus trip to NYC and even a cruise planned for June. As the weather chills, October is the perfect time for some haunting tales and as Dr. Birli says, “One hundred and sixty years sometimes comes with some ghost stories.” There are many more exciting events throughout the year to participate in and be a part of celebrating this amazing anniversary filled with rich history. Stay tuned!

FUN FACTS

Former resident.

Carl Bloss, Archivist Emeritus, was once an orphan living at Bethany until his high school years. He is now a historian who researches the history of orphanages.

Nature gives.

Sitting on a natural spring, Bethany sells its own spring water. The money brought in from sales helps subsidize the work the nonprofit does for youth.

Kelly Piccioni

OWNER, EVENTS

Kelly Piccioni is a fourth-generation horticulturalist from Berks. Although her family roots are in Christmas tree farming, she branched off into the floral business and teaching.

I’ve been a florist for 20 years. I enjoy it because flowers have such power and symbolism and really pull an event together. My focus is on weddings and other events, not every day floral arrangements. I enjoy weddings the most. It’s an honor to be part of one of the most important days of someone’s life. It fuels my soul when clients trust me to help make this day special and memorable. Regardless of the event, I customize everything for the client so the arrangements match their vision and their needs.

Q: You also teach, right?

Yes. I’ve been teaching horticulture at Berks Career and Technology Center for 11 years, and I truly love it. I’m also their Future Farmers of America advisor. I’m an advocate for agricultural careers and communities, and I find many people have a narrow view of farming and agriculture careers; these careers are more than just crops and livestock.

What suggestions

to work with you or other vendors for floral arrangements?

Before booking, really look at your florist’s portfolio and see if their strengths and styles match your vision, then book early even though you won’t plan details until about a year ahead. I am booking fall weddings two years out because of the demand. When you plan, choose a color palette and a design instead of specific flowers; since the pandemic and supply chain issues, it’s difficult to guarantee specific flowers will be available. Also, choose a florist who will work well with your photographer and make sure the flowers display well in photos. Finally, trust your florist to do their job and give you what you want.

I renovated my shed, which was my studio, into a micro event space named Wrennie Ruth's. Micro events are 75 people or less. I’m also a certified wedding planner, so I would like to use Wrennie Ruth's to focus on micro weddings and handle all of the event details for my clients. Then they can focus on the fun details while I handle the nitty gritty, from set up to clean up and everything in between. I’m also doing more custom home and porch decor for clients’ home events.

I enjoy spending time with my family, particularly outdoors, but as long as we’re together, it doesn’t really matter what we’re doing.

HELENA & PHILIP

How they met: Helena (Woytovich) Bennethum and Philip Bennethum III met when they were in 8th grade and became good friends until sophomore year of high school at Berks Catholic when they started dating. They dated throughout high school and college, attending different colleges. After graduating, they moved back to the area and into their first home in West Reading and adopted a puppy they named Barley.

Tell us about the proposal! Remembers Helena, “Apparently Philip stopped in my dad’s office, feigning an urgent need to use his printer, only to pull out a diamond and ask permission for my hand in marriage. A few weeks later, he suggested we celebrate the beginning of spring break by going to Mom Chaffe's, West Reading, for dinner. He almost gave away his well-planned surprise when he nervously told me that maybe he should wear a vest, not mentioning that he secretly needed a pocket to hide the ring. After finishing dinner and chatting with a sweet couple sitting beside us, Philip got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I really was very surprised, and it was perfect!”

THE BIG DAY:

The ceremony, attended by Helena’s parents – Jeff and Betsy Woytovich – and Philip’s parents – Philip Jr. and Katie (Distasio) Bennethum – saw Helena’s sister, Madison, serve as Maid of Honor, and Philip’s best friend, Joseph Stiles, serve as Best Man.

The reception in the Stone Terrace Tent at the Reading Public Museum boasted shades of sage green and silver, and saw the newlyweds share their first dance to Mango Tree by the Zac Brown Band. Guests enjoyed an Italian meal catered by Panevino, Wernersville, including a Mediterranean table for cocktail hour, salads and pastas, seafood and a carving station. A dessert table tempted with chocolate mousse, cannoli, caramel and cheesecake. The wedding cake was baked by Rose Dobson of Shillington and was chocolate chip with white buttercream icing. During the cocktail hour, The Noah Gibney Trio performed.

Married June 18, 2022 at Sacred Heart Church, West Reading | Photos by Marisa Kimmel Photography

Highlight for the Bride: “My favorite part was that I was marrying my best friend and throwing the best party with all of my favorite people.”

Highlight for the Groom: “Spending time outside on the lawn on that beautiful summer evening.”

The Honeymoon: The couple enjoyed a fabulous three-week honeymoon traveling Europe, including cities in Spain and Italy. A particularly special moment occurred in Palermo, Italy. In May of 2022, Phil ran into a man from New Jersey in a cigar bar in Clearwater, FL. They chatted, and Phil mentioned he was getting married, and that part the honeymoon would be spent in Palermo. The man was so excited because his cousin had recently opened a restaurant there. He gave Phil his phone number, told him to find Giuseppe at Ponticello Taverna Gastronomica, and they went on with their days. Two months later when the newlyweds found themselves in the restaurant, they found Giuseppe and told him the story. They had an incredible night chatting and drinking with the owner and his staff and enjoyed one of their favorite meals in Italy there.

Future Plans: The pair plan to travel and experience new places in the United States and abroad with Barley, especially during the summer months.

Advice for Future Couples Planning their Big Day: Enjoy every step of the planning process and try not to stress too much. It’s a day you plan for months (even years) and it goes by so incredibly fast. Everything might not go exactly as planned and that’s okay. The day will be perfect no matter what.

CASSIDY & HOUSTON

How they met: Cassidy (Chelius) Bortz first laid eyes on Houston Bortz eight years ago when he attended a Christmas Eve party hosted by her parents. He was an old friend of her brother’s that was in town for the holidays. Shortly after, as a music fan exploring the area nightlife in Berks, she bumped into Houston as he worked at a few events around town. The two mingled and took things slowly, eventually dating. And as Cassidy says, “The rest is history!”

Tell us about the proposal! On Dec. 5, 2020, knowing Cassidy’s love of Christmas, Houston planned a trip to the Lehigh Valley Zoo’s Winter Light Spectacular. They were joined by their best friends Jenna Hiester (later Cassidy’s Maid of Honor) and Alex Humphrey (Houston’s future Best Man). Recalls Cassidy, “I was really in my element because it was one of our first times out in public after a long and dreadful 2020. We made a pitstop at the gazebo for a photo op, and Houston got down on one knee and proposed to me. I looked over and my mom and dad, John and Denise Chelius, were there to surprise me, too. It was truly a magical moment I will never forget!”

THE BIG DAY:

Asserts Cassidy, “It was nothing short of perfect.” She woke up at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Reading before a team of makeup and hair professionals from Salon Avanti in West Reading came to work their magic. Arriving at IronSpire later that day, Cassidy and Houston enjoyed a first look and read private vows in front of their wedding party and parents, including Houston’s father, Justin Bortz, and mother, Maggie McDevitt. Cue the happy tears. The formal ceremony officiated by friend Andy Donnell followed, brought both laughter and more tears.

The reception, catered by the DoubleTree, included chicken fontina bites, scallops wrapped in bacon, mini cheesesteak hoagies, braised beef short rib with pan au jus, lemon thyme French-cut chicken, parmesan smashed potatoes and roasted root vegetables. A dessert bar included cupcakes baked by their friend, Taylor Ford Lee.

The simple and elegant ambiance carried out in white, peach, blush, tan and toffee shades acted as the perfect back drop as the couple shared a first dance to Unknown Legend by Neil Young.

Married August 27, 2022 at IronSpire Complex | Photos by Jonathan Pretz, Jon Athans Photography

Highlight for the Bride: “About 30 minutes before our ceremony, I started to feel a little overwhelmed, anxious and excited. I looked at Nancy, my concierge for the day from LEO Design, and said, ‘Nancy, I need to breathe!’ She immediately grabbed by hands, the hands of my mother, grandmother and my bridesmaids, and led us through the most beautiful breathwork meditation. It was everything I needed to feel present and in the moment the rest of the day.”

Highlight for the Groom: “Walking down the aisle after we said ‘I do.’ We had a special song queued up that really elevated the room and felt very special; looking around and seeing all the people we love was just a beautiful moment.”

The Honeymoon: The Sinking Spring couple spent two nights at a historic hotel in Newport, RI, touring old mansions, eating amazing seafood, enjoying a surprise firework display on the beach and relaxing for a bit.

Future Plans: Cassidy, an IT Trainer at Tower Health, and Houston, an event producer/project manager at JPL, recently purchased a home that they share with their cat, Boogie.

MARTHA & BRIAN

How they met: It paid off for Martha (Blackwood) Balthaser to be the assertive one! On Jan. 31, 2015, she private messaged Brian Balthaser on Facebook, asking if he’d like to get a bite to eat sometime if he wasn’t seeing anyone. Sorting through conflicting schedules, and after a lot of private messages, the pair had their first date on Valentine's Day at the Bowers Hotel, which has been a regular hang-out ever since.

Tell us about the proposal! Coming full circle, five years later, Brian proposed to Martha on Valentine's Day of 2020 with flowers and on bended knee. He personally designed Martha’s engagement ring using two of his parents’ diamonds. Says Martha, “It’s something I’ll always treasure.”

VENDORS

THE BIG DAY:

The ceremony, officiated by Eric Goldsborough, GT North, was held in the Wine Cellar at Stokesay Castle, Reading, with the reception following in the Lord's Dining Room. The couple shared a special moment with their children – Martha’s two daughters, Katie and Lauren, and Brian’s two sons, Brad and Kyle – performing a unity prayer in which they all combined sand from individual vessels into one. The act represented the joining of two individuals and the creation of a new union and family. The joined vessel symbolizes the marriage of both Martha’s and Brian’s hopes, dreams and values.

At the reception, the children gave touching toasts, expressing their love and wishing their parents happiness in the future. The Lord’s Dining Room was decked out in green, ivory and gold and guests were treated to chicken bruschetta and panko encrusted salmon with Dijon cream entrees. The cake, by Unique Desserts by Chef Ann Louise in West Reading, was white with Chambord and raspberry filling. The newlyweds first danced to Starting Over by Chris Stapleton.

Highlight for the Bride: “Walking down the candlelit aisle of the Wine Cellar to meet the love of my life while an instrumental arrangement of A Thousand Years played.”

Highlight for the Groom: “Celebrating our love with family and friends.”

The Honeymoon: The couple, originally from Kutztown, traveled to Captiva/Sanibel Island, FL, to enjoy their favorite place on earth. They kept things laid back for the most part: having morning coffee on their balcony, searching for seashells, dining at amazing restaurants and watching gorgeous sunsets on the beach.

Future Plans: The newlyweds currently reside in Topton. Martha is a paralegal at Kozloff Stoudt in Wyomissing and Brian is Senior Solution Leader at Volvo Group North America, Macungie. They live by the quote: “Grow old with me, the best is yet to be.”

Advice for Future Couples Planning their Big Day: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Things will inevitably go wrong, so stay focused on the big picture of marriage, not the wedding.

Wedding Décor

With so many options for wedding decorations , décor themes offer a helpful framework to focus on what fits your style. We talked with Heather Pasko, executive event planner, creative director and owner of Leo Design Gallery in Wyomissing to learn more. Explore the range of possibilities for your special celebration.

LI VING IN STYLE

Dé co r

Rustic décor provides couples with an opportunity to combine a love of nature and history. “The perfect settings for rustic weddings are barns, historic farm homes and woodlands,” says Pasko. Each of these venue choices offers its own distinctive variation on rustic style. The frame of a wooden barn, the craftsmanship of a stone farmhouse wall, or the breathtaking beauty of a forest can all serve as an eye-catching background in your photos. You can even mix and match locations between the ceremony and the reception, such as having the ceremony outdoors and the reception in a barn.

Rustic décor is all about working with what’s on hand, and letting nature and the location set the tone. “With an emphasis on organic, natural accents, and a loose, gathered look, the décor emphasizes lots of texture and layering elements like moss, branches, leaves and different types of greenery,” says Pasko. Time of year can also play a role in your decorating decisions, whether you want to revel in the golds, oranges and crimsons of autumn, or the brilliant leafy greenery of a summer day. “Flowers may include: blue globe thistle, pods and dried elements, like grasses.” These complement rustic décor’s bucolic, natural feel.

Beyond flowers, rustic style is a great way to get creative and personal with your decorating choices. “Wood slabs, lanterns and fairy lights are great rustic accents, and the organic nature of this

design invites clients to incorporate their own favorite pieces,” says Pasko. Wooden planks can be utilized for stylish signs, while lanterns can be used for décor and lighting. Combined with a candle, lanterns provide warm illumination and rustic centerpieces. Fairy lights offer a soft, firefly-like glow whether they are hung in trees or wrapped around the beams of a barn.

As far as color schemes go, Pasko says, “Think neutral color palette and elemental tones for this theme.” Since rustic décor is organic and inspired by nature, earthy tones like browns and greens are often used. Because this style focuses on incorporating the surrounding scenery, it showcases one of rustic décor’s advantages. “It is the most budget friendly as it allows you to incorporate less expensive flowers,

ENDURING ELEGANCE:

“The classic theme is rooted in tradition and is often regal and formal,” Pasko says. This timeless style is all about honoring and preserving the past. Couples who gravitate towards classic décor aren’t interested in scoping out the latest trends; they prefer traveling the path of time-tested style. Since classic weddings tend to be more formal, they offer a great opportunity for guests to dress up in their finest suits and ball gowns. In addition, receptions can include a multicourse sit-down meal as a more formal option.

Pasko describes classic décor as incorporating a wide variety of venue types and sizes. “Picture the charm of a home wedding, country club or ballroom with elements like monograms, soft lines and flowing fabric,” she says. Besides celebrating

have a long history, dating from the time of ancient Greece and Rome. They also have an association with royalty, family heritage and prestige. These versatile symbols can be incorporated on a mirrored sign to welcome guests, on the cake, on the wedding program, or even on the dance floor.

When it comes to color choices, classic décor celebrates all the elegant shades that we associate with a wedding. “Tried and true is the key to this theme,” notes Pasko. “Color palettes include soft pastels, champagne, blush, ivory and traditional seasonal ones.”

For florals, the classic theme is a champion of traditional wedding favorites. “This theme transcends time with flowers like roses, spray roses, hydrangeas and seeded eucalyptus.” Given their long-standing

Eucalyptus is also a timeless favorite that adds texture and greenery, and is a symbol of protection and abundance. With their lush, round blooms, both roses and hydrangeas create visually stunning floral arrangements. Hydrangeas symbolize perseverance and heartfelt emotion, making them a beautiful and meaningful addition to classic style. Accompanied by tealights, these blooms can be arranged in bowls for an elegant table display.

Another strength of classic décor is that its price has some flexibility and “falls in the mid to high budget range,” according to Pasko. With its enduring style, a classic theme can provide lasting satisfaction years later. “Timeless design choices guarantee that when you look back at your wedding photos decades

Romanti c Dé co r

Set your sights on romantic décor to create the glamorous fantasy wedding of your dreams. Right now, this style is more lavish than ever. “Micro weddings were very 2020, but the shift in wanting to celebrate on a large scale signals the return to the big, ‘blow out’ wedding,” notes Pasko.

“Perfect venues include historic ballrooms, castles and mansions.” With high ceilings, stone towers and other awe-inspiring architectural details, each of these locations will make you feel like you stepped out of the pages of your favorite fairytale.

Romantic décor celebrates the magic of love and provides a memorable, upscale experience amid an enchanting atmosphere.

“There is less emphasis on color palette; it’s all about grandeur and opulence, incorporating large centerpieces and floral installations,” says Pasko. Since the color palette is not taking center stage, this style encompasses a wide range of options. If pinks and pastels aren’t your style, go with deeper, vibrant colors. “You may use soft tones or bold jewel tones,” Pasko notes.

Like a fine dining experience, romantic style sets out to engage all the senses. Comfort and softness are key aspects of this theme. Festooned draperies hung from the ceilings and walls make a soft, elegant contribution. Lighting also plays a key role in creating an ethereal feeling. “It is characterized by lots of candlelight, fine china and flatware, upgraded and textured linens, soft seating and mood lighting.” The warm ambience of candlelight suits the romantic mood to perfection and is an ideal way to create an intimate atmosphere, no matter how large the guest list.

Since this theme emphasizes grandeur, romantic décor choices are frequently bold and eye-catching. “It often features solid floral centerpieces, tall vases and luxury candelabras. Floral choices for this theme include roses, peonies, dahlias, ranunculus and even orchids.” With their large, beautiful blooms and layers of petals, these flowers are perfect for romantic décor’s maximalist style. For example, a cascading floral display curved around a sofa creates a romantic spot for photographing the newlyweds.

Not surprisingly, romantic décor often has a budget that reflects its emphasis on opulence. “This theme could be in the higher price range due to the amount of floral and grand centerpieces used,” says

Pasko. Even so, romantic décor is an ideal opportunity to create a once-in-a-lifetime event that you and your guests will be reminiscing about again and again.

OF-THEMOMENT ART:

Modern Dé co r

Modern décor is a go-to choice for couples that want their wedding to reflect the here and now. This style tends toward minimalism and carefully planned décor decisions. “The modern theme is defined by clean lines, a contemporary vibe, and is usually monochromatic and tonal,” says Pasko. Sticking with one color choice helps cultivate modern décor’s fresh, less-is-more vibe.

This trendy, sophisticated style works well in indoor and outdoor locales. “Perfect settings include open-air tents, urban lofts and museums,” notes Pasko. Contemporary venues often contain a built-in aesthetic that’s an ideal backdrop for modern celebrations. Museums, for instance, don’t require a lot of added décor since they already have their own in-house collection of extraordinary objects. Tents, on the other hand, allow couples to start with a blank canvas and make intentional décor choices from there. Tents also provide plenty of natural lighting and are a great way to integrate the outdoors.

“Design components include clean tablescapes, geometric shapes, metallic decor and unusual or art-inspired installations,” Pasko says. Geometric shapes can be used in a myriad of ways, from connected hexagons used as a ceremony backdrop, or 3D shapes incorporated into hanging décor or light fixtures. Disco balls combine metallic décor and geometric

shapes and can be hung from the ceiling, or smaller versions can be used as table decorations.

Greenery is a versatile element in modern décor. Besides contributing to a clean, monochromatic style, leafy additions create an airy, outdoor feel anywhere. “White with greens, greenery chandeliers and even asymmetrical design is characteristic of this theme,” Pasko says. Hanging greenery in tandem with chandeliers makes a dramatic statement and draws the eye upwards. It also can be a delightful accompaniment to a dance floor.

For florals, “Great modern floral choices are calla lilies, orchids and tulips.” With their elongated blooms and long sturdy stems, calla lilies are a trendy choice for modern weddings. They can be arranged into breathtaking centerpieces or spectacular hanging displays. Luxurious, exotic-looking orchids also make a perfect modern statement. With their colorful variety, tulips are also a trendy choice and ideal for elegant centerpieces.

Like classic décor, the price point of a modern wedding varies. “This theme falls between mid-level to high, based on opulence and design choices,” Pasko says. Price aside, the results of this décor style can be awe-inspiring. “When this theme is well done, you may feel like you’re entering a piece of artwork.” ◆

3 CELEBRATION LOCATIONS

It’s no secret — Berks County is known for wonderful restaurants. But where do you go for a culinary experience that is so special that it’s one for the memory books? Not surprisingly, these three locations — noted for the finest of food and drink, attentive service and uniquely warm ambiance — are no secret to residents who pen them onto their special-occasion calendars year after year.

SAVORY GRILLE

Shawn Doyle is the chef-owner of this extraordinary restaurant in the countryside, now celebrating 25 years in business. Intimacy and excellence are the hallmarks of Savory Grille, with diners who adore their fine foods — especially the sea scallops, petit filet mignon and duck entrees.

“We’re in Berks County,” says Doyle, “but close enough to Lehigh, Montgomery and Bucks,” which means the restaurant draws attention from all corners. When it comes to special occasions, Savory Grille is often foremost on people’s minds, especially anniversaries, says Doyle. “We have a good amount of repeat business.”

In fact, he says, “We still get those days of having anniversaries on the same night in the restaurant. This year, we had a night where three couples celebrated 50-ish wedding anniversaries! They all started conversing with each other.”

Savory Grille is also a great place to pop the question. Doyle laughs, “It’s nice seeing people drop down on one knee. Or being really discreet about it, like asking us to place a ring in a dessert — which always makes me a little nervous, actually.”

For wedding-related parties, especially for close-knit weddings on the smaller side, Doyle says it’s best to just call and talk it over.

Dans at Green Hills

“People come for anniversaries, birthdays, holidays and all sorts of special events — or they have a party here for their parents’ anniversaries, retirement parties, and so forth. We do rehearsal dinners and small weddings, and we even have ceremonies on the patio in warm months.”

In the winter, the main dining room has a fireplace that makes it “nice and cozy,” says Monir. “Also, we have a very big Christmas tree outside on the patio from Thanksgiving to mid-January, which people love.”

Naturally, this spot lends itself to popping the question. “We do have people who get engaged here, yes!” says Monir. Bob Inman, who works closely with Monir, asserts that champagne and other celebratory beverages are always ready for pouring. “We have at least 10 different kinds, from $35 to $300 in price range.” Monir adds, “We have a six-page wine list — one of the biggest in Berks County. We offer very expensive French ones and more modestly priced champagnes from California, plus modestly priced French wines and sparkling wines.”

Eternally popular with diners are the filet mignon and the rack of lamb. For seafood, the scallops and the salmon rank high. “Those four items never change,” says Monir, “because people come for them — they’re always on the menu.” Their signature soup is a luscious sweet potato soup. For dessert, crème brulee and bread pudding are favorites.

“This is a special place,” says Monir. “We have many regular, loyal customers. Some customers come every week, or at least two or three times a month.” Importantly, Dans honors personal requests, so as to accommodate for allergies, gluten-free diets and more. Says Monir: “Nothing is pre-made, so everything can be tailored.”

JUDY’S ON CHERRY

Proprietor Judy Henry is celebrating 20 years of being in business and shares just one of many keys to her success: heartfelt enthusiasm. “I think that heartfelt enthusiasm is very contagious! I make a particular effort to ask people whether they’re celebrating a special occasion, and my staff does that as well — we can make their experience very special. We recognize our newcomers in the same way as our many repeat customers, to convey the intimacy and connection we feel about dining here.”

Judy’s Mediterranean-inspired ambiance and delicious entrees seal the deal when it comes to celebrating a special day: “It’s all about having an intimate and friendly experience — with, of course, really good food!”

Engagements are a big part of what happens here, in addition to birthdays and anniversaries, wedding rehearsal dinners, retirement dinners, and the like. “We have a good number of engagements happening here — and couples come back to that same table to celebrate year after year.” Many times, she adds, the customer “will come in for a preinspection and pick out the table they want to be seated at.” The fact that they choose to celebrate a significant occasion thrills this chef-owner: “It delights me! I am very happy to be in the business that I am in.”

Warm, attentive service is crucial, Judy notes. “I always train staff to be smart and to read people. We read our customers really well and adapt our service to their needs.”
