Accepting the Challenges of Fluid Power BY MOHANED SHAHIN, CFPS, ACCOUNT MANAGER PARKER HANNIFIN CORPORATION

I believe that the early experience I had working with hydraulics, and failing, is a relatable experience and a driving force for investigating the world of Fluid Power. For me, it all began in the Cleveland State University Fluid Power and Machining lab. My student group and I had just logged another long day during winter break working on a hydraulic powered bicycle for the Chainless Challenge (sponsored by Parker Hannifin at the time). This was our senior capstone project, and my first shot at working with hydraulic equipment. We spent a large majority of our winter break trouble shooting and solving the challenge of how to power our two wheeled bike with the use of hydraulics, far from the traditional and more efficient bike chain. In the end, after a long, bumpy road of system design, troubleshooting and rigorous testing, our bike failed in final testing, so we did not make it to the competition. For me, the experience developed into an interest to learn and understand more about fluid power capabilities. This exposure also prompted me to apply to work for Parker Hannifin, the company I now proudly go to bat for day in and day out. Parker also encouraged me to pursue several credentials in the Fluid Power Industry, Hydraulic Specialist and Pneumatic Specialist. Getting my certification early in my career was a logical next step in my technical sales training program with Parker.

IMPORTANCE OF CERTIFICATION When I was first certified, I didn’t fully understand the benefits of having my certification. Now that I have had time working in the field with hydraulics and speaking with customers regarding their fluid power systems, I feel confident that I am putting my certification to use. Not only am I able to provide my customers with premier customer service, but I am also showing them that manufacturers, like Parker, are heavily invested in helping their employees grow and develop as professionals in the world of fluid power. Now sitting on the Board of Directors of the International Fluid Power Society, I have been given a unique inside perspective of why certifications are so important.

LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE For a sales professional, looking towards the future and forecasting with our customers is an important piece of our jobs. It’s important for us to understand the market and have a strong idea of what their business’ will look like in the next 1-5 years because it will have a large effect on ours. In regards to fluid power, I think the future holds some very interesting things. First, you have the rapid advancement of Internet of Things (IOT). With that comes connected smart products and systems that can not only self-diagnose, but maybe even possibly self-heal. Secondly, I also believe with the advancement of different technologies, we may see a shift to more electromechanical and electrohydraulic systems even more than what we see today. I would encourage students that might have an interest in fluid power to check out the Fluid Power Challenges offered by National Fluid Power Association. And once you complete your degree, consider taking the Hydraulic Specialist and Pneumatic Specialist Certifications as a valuable asset to help your company and your future customers. 4

AC Hydraulic Pump/Motor PRESENTERS: RYAN FOSS, UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AND MENGTANG LI, VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY PROJECT LEADERS: JAMES VAN DE VEN, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (UMN), ERIC BARTH, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (VANDERBILT), AND KIM STELSON, PROFESSOR OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (UMN) INSTITUTIONS: UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AND VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY

PURPOSE A high percentage of electrical systems are AC, but virtually no hydraulic AC systems are available. This project will model, design, prototype, and experimentally characterize a novel pump based on AC hydraulics for the application of displacement control. The AC pump is formed by joining piston pairs from two fixed displacement pumps. By changing the phase angle between the two pumps, the displacement of the pump is varied. The majority of existing hydraulic circuits use metering valves to control the load. Such valves that throttle the flow fundamentally dissipate power as a means of controlling delivered power. A more efficient alternative is to utilize a variable displacement pump to control each actuator, termed

displacement control. Critical to displacement control is the performance and efficiency of the variable displacement pump across a wide range of displacements and pressures. For multi-actuator circuits where multiple pumps are driven on a common shaft, the package size and weight of the pump are also important.

PROGRESS The model was used to capture piston kinematics and cylinder pressure as functions of the pump’s phase shift angle. The model also captured flows between pairs of cylinders as functions of the pump’s phase shift angle. The model captured check valve dynamics and input motor torque. Leakage, viscous friction, and effective bulk modulus were considered. The simulation followed the results of the experiment well. However, results started to deviate from the model at higher-phase shifts, probably due to the large dead volume. In addition to the large dead volume, the prototype was also limited by the fact that there was no active control of the pump displacement.

NEXT STEPS Bosch Rexroth donated a radial piston pump, and the researchers will modify the pump for active phase angle control using a cam phaser.

THE EFFECT OF HIGH TEMPERATURE ON SEALING MATERIAL: Comprehensive Test of Water Glycol Fluids on Common Seal Materials Reveals Temperature-Related Issues BY JAMES SIMPSON, CFPAI, CFPS, CFPMM, SALES MANAGER, OIL & GAS EUROPE; AND ERIC BUCCI, SEGMENT MANAGER, OIL & GAS AMERICAS, BOTH OF TRELLEBORG SEALING SOLUTIONS

As the oil and gas industry moves to recover more challenging reserves and enters the development of High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) fields, it is imperative that operators understand the effects of high-temperature exposure of sealing materials within waterbased hydraulic fluids. Until now, these two materials have not been thoroughly tested together at high temperatures.

BACKGROUND

Water glycol fluids consist of a solution of water, ethylene, or diethylene glycol, usually a high molecular weight polyglycol and an additive package. The water-to-glycol mixture typically contains 38% to 45% water. These fluids usually contain red, pink, or other colored dye to aid in their identification. 8

JULY/AUGUST 2018

With water in the formulation, evaporation is ongoing, and upper operating temperature limits must be considered. Water loss can cause an imbalance relative to the additives and adversely affect viscosity, pH, and lubrication quality. Periodic checks of the water content must be made and water added to the system if required. Added water must be distilled or soft de-ionized because the calcium and magnesium present in potable water will react with additives, causing them to precipitate out of the fluid and compromise fluid performance. Ideally, operating temperatures should be kept below 65°C to minimize evaporation, though in practice they can be significantly higher. The polyglycol is a water-soluble polymer thickener that can be formulated to cover a wide range of viscosities. The resulting viscosity-temperature

properties give water glycols good low-temperature cold-start pump wear protection and minimize cavitation. The additive package imparts corrosion resistance, metal passivation, seal and hose compatibility, oxidation resistance, antimicrobial properties, antifoaming agents, and antiwear properties. Water glycol fluids also have better thermal transfer properties than do other fire-resistant fluids.

WHY USE WATER-BASED HYDRAULIC FLUIDS?

Water-based hydraulic fluids are widely used in oil and gas, mining, hot-rolling mills, and similar applications where the potential for fire could cause catastrophic consequences. They are also replacing traditional oil-based HLP fluids in applications where environmental regulations must be observed. As a result, they have become more prevalent in many applications within offshore energy production as a means of protecting people, the environment, and resources. Low- viscosity versions operate more effectively than do oil-based HLP fluids over long distances, and the low compressibility of water gives faster response times. The International Standards Organization (ISO) classifies fire-resistant, water-based hydraulic fluids into four categories: • HFAE, which includes oil-in-water emulsions, typically with more than 80% water content • HFAS, which are synthetic aqueous fluids, typically containing more than 80% water WWW.FLUIDPOWERJOURNAL.COM • WWW.IFPS.ORG

• HFB, which are water-in-oil emulsions typically containing more than 40% water • HFC (also known as glycol solutions, polyalkylene glycol solutions, and water glycols), which include water polymer solutions, typically containing more than 35% water HFC fluids are the most common hydrous, fire-resistant hydraulic fluids because they have the best fire resistance and hydraulic properties. They are also used wherever hydraulic fluid escaping under high pressure can ignite on contact with hot materials. At temperatures above 600°C, these fluids should not ignite or continue to burn. They can be used at ambient temperatures of -20°C to +65°C and up to working pressures of 250 bar. The fire resistant and environmentally friendly qualities of HFC fluids make them ideal for use in offshore installations, whether on surface equipment, such as motion compensation cylinders, or on subsea equipment when used as a control fluid to operate valves and blow-out preventers. The fire-resistant properties mean greater fire safety, offering more time to initiate fire-fighting measures and bring people to safety in the event of an accident.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS WITH HFC FLUIDS

As they are made mostly of water, HFC fluids have vastly different lubrication properties as compared to oil-based fluids. In hydraulic fluids, the interrelation between viscosity and temperature is described by the viscosity index (VI). HFC hydraulic fluids have a better viscosity temperature behavior than HLP mineral oil. In HFA hydraulic fluids, the dependency of the viscosity on the temperature is negligible. The differing viscosity temperature behavior should be taken into consideration when selecting hydraulic fluid for the required temperature range. Owing to high vapor pressure, in comparison to a similar HLP mineral oil, the maximum operating temperature when working with fire-resistant, water-containing hydraulic fluids must be limited. Reservoir temperatures above +50°C must be prevented in open systems because they can lead to serious water loss and accelerate the aging process in the hydraulic fluid. Furthermore, in HFC hydraulic fluids, water losses that are too high can lead to both an increase in viscosity and a reduction in fire-resistant properties. The minimum operating temperature for HFA hydraulic fluids is +5°C. HFC hydraulic fluids respond very well at low temperatures and have a lower pour point compared to HLP mineral oils. It’s critical that the hydraulic fluid does not negatively affect the materials used in the components within any system that uses HFC fluids. Compatibility with coatings, seals, hoses, metals, and plastics should be observed to prolong the service life and integrity of equipment.

AVOIDING DOWNTIME

Oil and gas hydraulic applications often involve demanding dynamic movements. For instance, sealing systems in offshore motion compensation cylinders can be subjected to significant wear due WWW.IFPS.ORG • WWW.FLUIDPOWERJOURNAL.COM

to long strokes. Compared to oil-based HLP media, the water base of HFC fluids typically produces different reactions within the traditional sealing materials used in these applications. The different reactions can range from lower lubricity relative to dynamic sealing elements, to corrosion concerns of supporting metal hardware, to compatibly with sealing polymers.

TESTING HFC FLUIDS

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions and fluid producer MacDermid partnered to investigate the effect of water glycol fluids on common seal

materials. In 2015, they developed a series of tests involving seven seal materials, six fluids, and three temperatures. The MacDermid fluids tested were: ERIFON 818 TLP, COMPENOL OCEANIC HW 525 P, OCEANIC HW 443, OCEANIC HW 740 R, OCEANIC XT 900. Trelleborg materials tested were: • XploR® H9T20: Explosive decompression resistant HNBR • XploR® H9T21: Low temperature explosive decompression resistant HNBR • XploR® V9T20: Explosive decompression resistant FKM

Relative to elastomer materials, the testing highlighted that while HNBR (XploR® H9T20 & H9T21) exhibits relatively small changes in hardness, volume, and strain with Oceanic HW 740 R (and other HFC fluids) up to +70°C, there is a more pronounced change in these properties when the test is performed at temperatures of +135°C. The HNBR property change from +70°C to +135°C is expected and typical because rubber materials generally lose properties as temperature increases. Therefore, the test results for HNBR are well within acceptable seal performance and operational limits and suggest the best combination of compatibility and material property retention at temperatures up to +135°C. In applications where temperatures are above +135°C, industry professionals would typically look to FKM (Fluoropolymer) materials to provide a solution. However, our testing illustrates that water-based HFC fluids create a significant change to the properties of FKM at both +70°C and +135°C. As a result, FKM would not typically be recommended for any applications involving these fluids. By comparison, we see relatively small changes in the properties of perfluoroelastomer Isolast® J9513 and Turcon® PTFE materials. At temperatures above +135°C, these materials offer a potential solution when dealing with high temperature applications that involve HFC fluids. More and more deep sea wells are reaching temperatures up to +200°C and additional testing within Trelleborg has shown Isolast® J9513 and Turcon® materials retain a significant portion of their material properties in the high temperature water glycol fluids, such as MacDermid Oceanic XT900. The testing reveals the importance of fluid type and seal material choice in ensuring optimum seal performance and service life. Traditional sealing materials, such as FKM, often inert in most fluids, are exhibiting disadvantageous behavior in HFC fluids. The material compatibilities mentioned here may not automatically result in success. Offshore operators are free to add extra additives to suit their particular application, and the extra additives were not included in the Trelleborg test. The extra additives may lead to seal material incompatibilities and could have dramatic adverse effects on sealing materials. Material incompatibilities may lead to an accelerated aging process in the hydraulic fluid and to increased wear and degradation of the sealing components. Each application must be reviewed uniquely to optimize the seal materials with the HFC fluid. It is important that seals are proved in specific applications with specific fluids and under actual operating conditions to ensure seal performance and life. Rotating Stage’s Hydraulic Motor Keeps Leaking

OIL-HEATER PROBLEMS WITH A HYDRAULIC POWER UNIT (HPU) LOCATED IN AN UNHEATED SHED

SOL. 1A

A large entertainment stage is rotated by a Geroler type hydraulic motor shown on the circuit. The regenerative center position on the directional valve eliminated a sudden jerk when first started since both ports were already pressurized. The pilot operated directional valve also had a smaller pilot pressure orifice installed to slow down the shifting speed softening the acceleration phase of the start cycle. The problem they were complaining about was the big puddle of oil leaking out from under the stage every couple of months that required replacing the hydraulic motors that were leaking out through the shaft seal. They changed to a different Geroler brand motor and still suffered the same failure. Any idea what the problem could be?

The system that had problems with a tank heater was generating 45 Watts per square inch and hydraulic oil should not be subjected to anything above 15 Watts per square inch. If you purchase a 3-phase 460-volt heater and run it on 230 volts with the three elements wired in a Delta configuration, you would get ¼ of the normal 45 Watts per square inch or 10.25 Watts/S.I. The rebuilder did not inform the owner that the heater was ordered as a 460-volt unit. The new heater was ordered the same as the old as far as they knew but 230-volt 3 phase was specified causing the heater to over-heat the oil, turning it into a carbon solid surrounding the heater elements. COMPRESSED AIR SYSTEMS: CHECK YOUR ASSUMPTIONS By Ron Marshall

When it comes to compressed air, it is best not to assume too much. Many people think that their compressed air system is running efficiently because their service company does regular maintenance on their compressors. Or they expect that a new cutting edge VSD compressor will save them money because the salesmen told them it would. Or they believe their compressed air system has been installed correctly by their top-rated contractors. In many cases these assumptions can be correct, but sometimes unexpected problems will cost their company significant dollars.

COMPRESSORS It is difficult to tell if air compressors are producing the correct output for the expected power consumption. Just because a compressor is running does not mean it is actually producing air. In fact, there are many instances where running compressors will be producing very little or no air at all, but still consuming significant power. An example of this was found at a medium-sized paint manufacturer, where one of the air compressors was consuming about 70 percent of its

full load power, but due to mechanical failure it was producing zero air. It ran this way for a few years; nobody was the wiser. Problems can happen when different types of compressors are mixed without special considerations about pressure coordination. A common problem occurs when a variable speed compressor is introduced into a system of fixed-speed units. Consider the experience at a wire manufacturer who purchased a VSD compressor at a 50% premium and proudly showed it

Figure 1: This dust collector was consuming 40 hp worth of compressed air

off to a compressed air professional. After a few quick checks, the expert informed the staff the new compressor was not saving any power at all. This was clear from the data in the compressor controller. The compressor provider had sold the compressor, but did not advise the customer that new pressure settings were required. As a result, the compressor was inefficiently fighting with all the other compressors.

AIR DRYERS Problems can happen with air dryer installations. A car dealership purchased a refrigerated air dryer to remove the water that was contaminating their system and affecting their paint shop. After installation, they found that the water problems had a short hiatus but then continued. A careful inspection revealed that the air dryer was removing moisture, but the installer of the unit had improperly piped the water drain, causing a restriction, preventing the water from being expelled from the system. Sometimes the dryer will not work correctly in the first place. A food processor purchased a very expensive heated blower desiccant dryer to process their compressed air to minus 40 degree dew point. When an auditor measured their system he noticed that whenever the dryer operated there

PIPING Less than desirable piping practices can often be found after installation of new equipment, especially for turnkey jobs where the contractor supplies the piping at a fixed price. The purchaser assumes the contractor has the purchaser’s best interests in mind, but unfortunately, sometimes this is not the case. An installation was found at a printing plant where a 75 hp and 25 hp were both installed using one inch aluminum piping. The installation looked very neat and tidy, but when the pressure was measured, a 20 psi pressure differential was found at full load, robbing the plant of much needed pressure.

END USES Quite often problems with the compressed air consuming equipment in a plant can cause issues. At an aircraft engine service plant the air

compressors were found to be running out of capacity, so a new unit was being considered. In the past only two compressors were required, but now they needed three. A system audit was conducted, and during the leak detection process, a dust collector was found to have a failed valve. A blast valve had failed to open and was consuming compressed air worth 70% of one compressor. It is best not to assume your system is running correctly. Always check your assumptions, or have someone with experience do so for you.

was a large swing in compressed air flow, so much so that a second compressor was required. Close inspection revealed that when the dryer was assembled, two solenoid valves were swapped by mistake. This dryer had run incorrectly for 5 years, costing this factory thousands of dollars per year in extra power costs.

Indicator-Light Technology Reduces Time, Cost for Fluid Power Managers

8901-D Flex-Core

BY FRED BEHNKE, ENGINEER, CANFIELD CONNECTOR

Imagine being responsible for a large fluid-management system that relies on dozens of solenoid valves, many of them arranged sideby-side, to keep an operation dry and smooth. When one solenoid valve isn’t properly energized, the performance of an entire cluster of valves can deteriorate. Moreover, identifying the one problem valve in a bank of up to 50 can take a while. It was this scenario that led to the development of indicator light technology, through which solenoid valve connectors equipped with lights shine brightly when a connector is relaying power but turn off when the connector has lost power. This simple but effective visual cue continues to save fluid power managers considerable time and cost. A BOOST FOR TROUBLESHOOTING

When an operator surmises that a solenoid valve is not working and begins to investigate the source of the failure, indicator-light

Indicator light technology has been a mainstay in electrical connectors since the 1980s, even as the designs and materials used in connectors have changed. In recent years, with the rise of smaller Deutsch connectors as alternatives to the larger DIN standards, indicator light technology continues in demand. Components used to deliver the technology have changed, however. When this technology was new, connector manufacturers used neon bulbs. Today, some are using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that add both durability and visibility to connectors. In the future, as better component materials and options become available, more change is likely to deliver the technology better and faster. Saving time and money in the troubleshooting and testing solenoid valves and connectors remains a priority for service technicians and facility coordinators. This ensures light indicator technology will remain popular in industry.

Fred Behnke is an engineer at Canfield Connector, a leading supplier of electrical connectors for fluid-power applications.

technology communicates right away whether power is getting to the suspected solenoid. That means the operator doesn’t have to troubleshoot and test individual connectors to see whether they’re relaying power to their solenoid valves. This can represent a huge savings in maintenance time — and production downtime.

2018 OTC CELEBRATES 50 YEARS Offshore energy industry experts and leaders from across the world came together at NRG Park in Houston 30 April–3 May to celebrate the 50th edition of the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC). As it has since 1969, the conference convened professionals to make critical decisions, share ideas, and develop business partnerships to meet global energy demands. In addition, OTC directly benefitted the advancement of the energy sector by supporting the conference’s 13 nonprofit sponsoring organizations, and the Houston community. The 50th edition of OTC focused on subjects such as the current state of the industry, reducing costs and improving overall value, breakthrough technologies in a low oil price environment, and industry-leading safety practices in addition to recurring topics.

More than 61,300 attendees from more than 100 countries gathered at the annual conference while the exhibition covered more than 585,000 net square feet, including outdoor exhibits. This year’s conference also had more than 2,300 exhibiting companies representing 44 countries. Nearly 300 were new exhibitors, and international companies made up 55 percent of exhibitors. “We are very pleased with this year’s attendance, as it is above our 52,570 attendance average across OTC’s 50 editions. We are also seeing high interest in next year’s event. 2019 exhibition space in NRG Center was sold out before our 2018

make OTC what it is today. Former OTC Board Chairs Dennis Gregg and Susan Cunningham were joined by Cindy Taylor, CEO and President from Oil States—a company with a long history of exhibiting at OTC—to share their memories of OTC. OTC’s annual Spotlight on New Technology Awards recognized 17 technologies from exhibiting companies for their new and innovative products and services, including two companies who won the Small Business Award. OTC’s Distinguished Achievement Awards Luncheon raised USD 150,000 for its beneficiary, the Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy. During the luncheon, OTC presented its 2018 Distinguished Achievement Award for Individuals to Brian Skeels and the Distinguished Achievement Award for Companies, Organizations and Institutions to Shell and SBM Offshore. OTC’s Heritage Award was presented to Cesar del Vecchio, and Tom Sifferman received a Special Citation. The topical breakfasts and luncheons featured top executives from international and national oil companies on a wide range of management, research, and technology-related issues. In one of Thursday’s breakfasts, PEMEX provided an update on its E&P activities following the Energy Reform, including how it is tackling challenges derived from a legacy complex cost structure, a maturing E&P portfolio, and limited access to financial resources. Carlos Treviño Medina, CEO of PEMEX, was among those in attendance. OTC also hosted the Rice Alliance Startup Roundup for the fourth time, where 50 emerging companies met one-on-one WWW.IFPS.ORG • WWW.FLUIDPOWERJOURNAL.COM

with investors. More than 275 attended to learn more about these startups and enabled potential partnerships as well as investments. The WISE (Women in the Industry Sharing Experiences) event, a staple at OTC since 2012, offered an opportunity for women and men to share experiences and collaborate on topics such as improved diversity, mentorship, and communications in the workplace. OTC’s The Next Wave program, “The Next 50: The Evolution of the Industry,” included keynote speakers Ashild Larsen, CIO and Senior Vice President Corporate IT, Statoil and Emeka Emembolu, Vice President, Reservoir Development, Gulf of Mexico, BP. The program helped young industry professionals with open communication between the generations by providing a forum for attendees to share, learn, and network with their peers. Additionally, as part of OTC’s continuous commitment to education, the Energy Education Institute conducted two events during the week – one for high school students and another for all grade level teachers. Participating teachers and students engaged in grade-appropriate, hands-on energy exploration experiments provided by the NEED Project. Finally, a separate group of 60 local high school students also participated in the OTC Energy Challenge, which asked them to solve real-world energy challenges. Teams from Stratford High School, Westside High School, and The Village School were recognized for their creative solutions. OTC 2019 will take place 6 –9 May at NRG Park. JULY/AUGUST 2018

ISO STANDARDS AWARENESS FOR FLUID POWER PROFESSIONALS

ISO 4405 LAB STUDY UPDATE

(DETERMINATION OF PARTICULATE CONTAMINATION BY THE GRAVIMETRIC METHOD)

By Sneha Swaminathan, Hollingsworth & Vose, and Susan Goldsmith, IBR Laboratories

This update is a technical summary of work done by the ISO 4405 (determination of particulate contamination by the gravimetric method) United States Technical Advisory Group to ISO/TC 131/SC 6 and participating U.S. laboratories.

GRAVIMETRIC ANALYSIS Gravimetric analysis is an important component of several standards (Table 1) for filter testing of lube, fuel and hydraulic filters to determine efficiency, life and verify system cleanliness. The general guidelines of the method are dependent on a number of factors, such as dust level, type and properties of solvent, membrane type and process conditions, such as drying time in oven, desiccator, and weighing. As with most methods, accuracy is dependent on the technique used, as well as on the materials and equipment used.

INTERLAB STUDY To share best practices of ISO 4405 test technique, solvent, and membranes, seven U.S. laboratories met at IBR Laboratories in Michigan on 5th March 2018 for an interlab study. Filtered hydraulic fluid and dust suspension of 10 mg/l was given to each company. Each company representative demonstrated the company’s ISO 4405 technique for 20 minutes and shared the company’s procedure with the group.

• rinsing technique of the funnel and membrane • drying time and time in desiccator • drying temperature and membrane handling technique. Some of the solvents used in the study included heptane, PET Ether, hexane, pentane, Bioact, isopropanol and d-limonene. The membrane types included polycarbonate, cellulose nitrate, mixed cellulose ester and polyethersulfone. Table 1: Standards using gravimetric analysis

CONTINUED WORK OF ISO 4405 GROUP Each lab and company was comfortable with its solvent and technique for ISO 4405. Therefore, instead of specifying solvents, membranes and process conditions, the team wanted to suggest making ISO 4405 a more outcome-based method. We will develop informative recommendations for technique, solvents, and membranes. But these will not be normative (required). Our work will focus on how to define the targets for an outcome-based method. The outcome based targets will include how to determine method detection limit (MDL), accuracy, precision, and range of usability as mg/L. The ISO 4405 is used for determining mg/L in filter capacity and efficiency testing. Therefore, the MDL should be expressed as mg/L rather than mg. The MDL in this case is not affected by the instruments, since the specified balance limit of 0.01mg is much lower than the measured values. In this case, the detection limit is affected by sampling, sample volume, solvent, membrane, and technique. For many labs at the meeting, this low limit was in the 2-5 mg/L range. This can have significant impact on calculated capacities for fuel and oil filter methods. The group will work on defining these parameters and acceptable ranges for given mg/L ranges.

HOW TO

DESIGN

AN EFFICIENT AIR LOGIC SYSTEM A step-by-step approach that takes the guesswork out of pneumatic control BY MIKE KETTERING, TECHNICAL SALES, CLIPPARD

Electronics have been a dominant control method for decades, but conditions sometimes exist that prohibit the use of electronic controls. For example, magnetic resonance imaging machines emit strong electromagnetic fields that are incompatible with strong ferrous metals and external electronic fields. Strong radio-frequency fields can interfere even with hard-wired electronic controls. Furthermore, equipment operating in close proximity to explosives or fuels and other volatile fluids must be explosion-proof—a requirement that adds considerable bulk and expense to control components. These conditions may not be the norm, but any one of them can leave control system designers wondering what alternatives are available. This is where pneumatic control provides a surprisingly wide array of solutions.

A COMPACT ECONOMICAL SOLUTION Modular air-logic systems are often a good bet when a compact, economical solution is a must, especially for applications where space is limited. They typically consist of a series of valves mounted onto standard manifold subplates. Only a few manufacturers offer modular, manifold-mounted pneumatic control systems. For instance, Clippard offers a pneumatic programmable controller—a sequential controller that provides step-by-step system operation. It consists of a clear acrylic manifold for mounting sequence valves and other such components in a compact, efficient package. The system is designed to automatically generate feedback signals to initiate the next step when an operation finishes. Many types of sensors can generate feedback signals, including limit valves, proximity sensors, pressure sensors, Hall-effect switches, back-pressure cylinder sensors, and manual pushbuttons. Feedback signals provide positive, safe operation. If no signals are sent (due to a component failure, missing or jammed parts, and so on), the sequence stops and an indicator pinpoints where to troubleshoot. Internal interlocks prevent out-of-sequence feedback signals. A pneumatic output signal at each step actuates air-piloted devices, including power valves, hydraulic valves, pressure switches, and other components that may control air cylinders. The last sequence valve resets the system to repeat the cycle of operations. DESIGN BASICS

Modular systems can contain just a few valves or dozens, with many built-in functions to permit a systematic approach to circuit design. As with any control system, it is essential to outline system requirements to save time and reduce the chances of missing a critical step. Designers must also have a clear understanding both of the sequence of operations (including pressure, temperature, filtration, and other operating conditions) and the control requirements (including manual, automatic, start, stop, etc.). As a final check of circuit operation, consider proper actuation during all conceivable events. This includes startup, shut down, loss of air, panic stops in mid-cycle, restarts in mid-cycle, and control during any other event likely to occur.

CHANGING OPERATIONS START OPTIONS

Limit Sensor

Modular systems can be quickly tailored to meet specific requirements. Sequence conditions can be altered or adapted to the clippard.com application by using different control modules. Here’s a look at some common options.

3

If the application demands an input for each cycle of operations, use a pushbutton input signal and a sequence valve that provides a reset lock if the button is held actuated. If continuous cycling is required, use a selector or toggle valve at the input of the first step along with a valve that permits continuous cycle sequences. For applications requiring choosing between one cycle or continuous cycling, add a selector valve that determines the type of operation. A selector valve gives the option of one-cylinder operation or continuous cycling

SYSTEM SHUT-OFF

These controls turn off the main air supply. This prevents harming people or product from accidental machine operation. If the system has large power valves, a piloted three-way main supply valve can control a specific machine section. When electrical circuits are part of the system, an air-piloted pressure switch ensures the system has electric power only if the air is on. MULTIPLE INPUTS

When two functions actuate at the same time, a piloted 3-Way valve (AND function) ensures both functions are complete before the next step begins. MULTIPLE OUTPUTS

When two (or more) functions start with the same step, connect the output from that sequence step to both power valves. Prevents accidental WWW.IFPS.ORG machine operation

MULTIPLE FUNCTIONS

Functions that actuate twice during the sequence call for the system to connect a shuttle valve (OR function) to the pilot of the power valve. DELAYS

Applications requiring a delay before a step can use a delay-in module between the limit. RESET

This control, when actuated, returns the sequence to the start position. Reset can also place power valves in a home position. A reset circuit should only be used when the control is in manual mode. BACK PRESSURE SENSING

Many air-cylinder applications cannot use mechanical limit valves for sensing because of physical interference, temperature extremes, or other conditions. A method called back pressure sensing indicates cylinder position without limit valves. For example, as a cylinder retracts, it creates a back pressure behind the piston. Restricting exhaust air at the control valve further increases pressure and slows return of the cylinder rod. This back pressure holds the pilot down on a Normally-Open (NO) 3-Way valve. When the cylinder fully returns, back pressure diminishes at the pilot port of the Normally-Open 3-Way valve, letting a spring shift the valve to send a pneumatic signal to the next step. If the system requires a delay, substitute a delay-out module for the 3-Way valve. E-STOP

Emergency-stop controls can halt system operations in several ways: 1. Stopping the sequence only 2. Stopping the sequence and relieving pressure from the power valves 3. Stopping the sequence and activating reset controls A latching mushroom-head button is commonly used for the emergency-stop control because it gives users a positive response when activated.

Long lead times?

A shuttle valve to the pilot of a power valve lets a function actuate twice during a sequence.

PNEUMATIC CYLINDER

CUSHIONING INCREASING THE EFFICIENCY OF YOUR ENTIRE PNEUMATIC SYSTEM By Mike Guelker Product Manager - Pneumatic Actuators FESTO Corporation

With the right end-position cushioning, you can significantly increase the efficiency of your entire pneumatic system, improving cycle time and even reducing the size of the components used. All this for the simple reason that good end-position cushioning decreases the impact forces generated by changing loads and extreme dynamic stress – factors that play a crucial role in defining the travel time and speed of pneumatic cylinders.

LATEST TECHNOLOGY

In order to ensure that the cushioning performance is as effective as possible, it is important to select the most suitable type of cushioning for the application in question. We want to look at the best performing and most cost-effective end-position cushioning technologies for pneumatic cylinders.

This technology refers to the elastic cushioning rings (made ELASTIC of elastomer) that are integratBUFFER ed either as part of the cylinder CUSHIONING piston or in the end position in (BUMPERS) order to reduce the impact forces and the noise of the impact made when the piston reaches the cylinder end position. Since only a small amount of kinetic energy can be absorbed, Bumpers are particularly suited to slow operating speeds, low loads and applications with short working strokes. The performance of Bumpers also varies, depending on the manufacturer or the type of drive, because the hardness and quality of elastomer materials differ. Elastic Bumpers are a simple yet effective standard solution for end-position cushioning in pneumatic cylinders.

When the dynamic forces and loads are larger, additional cushADJUSTABLE ioning is required in order to prePNEUMATIC vent the drive and system from CUSHIONING being overloaded. Machine and PPV plant builders, therefore, often use the adjustable pneumatic cushioning system PPV. In this technology, with each working stroke, a mechanism traps a specific volume of air in the end position. This air is compressed to generate a braking effect. The exhaust air flow can be controlled using an adjusting screw, allowing manual adjustment of the braking effect. When manually adjusting PPV end-position cushioning systems, it’s necessary to take the following factors, which affect the cushioning characteristics, into account: the moving mass, the piston speed, the acceleration of the piston, the working pressure and the friction in the cylinder. It may be necessary to readjust the cushioning after a certain number of cycles in order to maintain optimum cushioning performance in the long term.

SELFADJUSTING PNEUMATIC CUSHIONING PPS

Self-adjusting cushioning PPS for pneumatic cylinders also compresses air to generate a braking effect. Unlike PPV cushioning, though, the exhaust air flow control of compressed air is altered, depending on the stroke. The patented operational principle is as follows: the exhaust air escapes through the slots in the cushioning boss. The cross-section of this exhaust method is altered by the cushioning stroke. This allows the end-position cushioning PPS to adjust automatically to the different energy levels generated by changing loads and speeds.

PPS cushioning even reacts to changes in parameters such as friction and working pressure, and ensures optimum cushioning without the need for manual adjustments. PPS automatically minimizes the effect that acceleration forces and shock have on machine components and workpieces. As there is no need for manual adjustment, PPS saves the system operator valuable time – and thus costs – during installation and maintenance of the drives. A positive side-effect of this is the increased process reliability and protection against faulty settings.

PP1 is always recommended in situations that demand extremely fast travel. This design combines the features of the adjustable pneumatic cushioning PPV with the self-adjusting pneumatic cushioning PPS, and has an additional adjustable bypass for PPS to improve the cushioning performance. When the bypass is closed, this combination of technologies thus acts as a simple pneumatic cushioning system PPS. One of the great advantages of this hybrid design over PPV cushioning is that it is much easier to adjust manually. In addition, PP1 does not usually require readjustment. This end-position cushioning system is a relatively new development with great potential. PP1 is currently only available as a special design. PP1 – A COMBINATION OF PPS AND PPV (SPECIAL DESIGN)

Compared to PPV cushioning that has been adjusted poorly or not at all, self-adjusting cushioning ADVANTAGES PPS always provides better quality OF PPS cushioning. However, its perforCUSHIONING mance reaches its limits when the energy absorption (extreme combinations of speeds and loads) is very high. In such cases, the cushioning performance is not as good as that of well-adjusted end-position cushioning PPV. However, the biggest advantage that PPS has over other types of end-position cushioning technology is that it provides optimum cushioning results for most speed/load combinations (approx. 80% of all industrial applications). This makes it a very good solution for a wide range of applications in all industrial sectors. Since PPS is easy to clean and has no dirt traps (Clean Design), it is becoming increasing popular in the food industry.

End-position cushioning PPP is a pressure-sensitive pneumatic cushioning system that is used in very special applications. When conditions are extremely demanding and the end-position cushioning systems discussed above are not powerful enough, PPP can be used to achieve very good cushioning. When the load/speed combination changes, or there are pressure fluctuations in the working air, PPP ensures optimum end-position cushioning. Like the other pneumatic end-position cushioning systems, PPP generates its braking effect by compressing a trapped volume of air. It automatically adapts to changes in load and offers a greater power spectrum than the PPV. The patented operational principle is as follows: the flow rate required to dissipate the energy is regulated automatically by a specially shaped spring-ball system. The cross-section of the cushioning is adjusted depending on the buffer pressure. As it is a special design, PPP is adapted by the manufacturer to suit the individual customer’s application. This makes it a costly end-position cushioning system. Machine and plant builders also need to plan accordingly for the development time when designing their projects. SERVOPNEUMATIC CUSHIONING SOFT STOP

Servo-pneumatic cushioning systems can regulate the cushioning process directly. Using a displacement encoder, a proportional valve and an electronic end-position controller, the approach to the end positions of the pneumatic cylinder is controlled electronically. A counter-current of air is channeled in at specific, predefined positions to brake the piston. The end-position controller regulates the air flow rate through the proportional valve. This method produces excellent cushioning characteristics. The end-position controller automatically compensates for fluctuations in the supply air and dynamic loads. Servo-pneumatic end-position cushioning is very effective, but the number of additional components required makes it expensive. It is mainly suitable for applications with very high cycle rates, strokes of more than 300 mm and loads greater than 10 kg.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT END-POSITION CUSHIONING TECHNOLOGY

There are a great many factors that play a role in this choice. Moving loads, travel speeds, the combination of the two, cylinder size and length, and horizontal and vertical alignment are all important. On top of this, the decision is made even more difficult by reciprocal dependencies. The selected end-position cushioning technology should come as close as possible to fulfilling the requirements of the application. Ultimately, the application defines the solution. There is no “one-sizefits-all” solution. However, it is still possible to provide a general recommendation for an endposition cushioning solution for many industrial applications. The scope of the self-adjusting end-position cushioning PPS reliably meets the needs of most industrial applications. What’s more, compared to alternative end-position cushioning methods, it provides financial, planning and industry-specific benefits, such as Clean Design for the food industry. Each type of cushioning technology has advantages and disadvantages that need to be weighed. There is a suitable solution for both standard applications and special requirements. The latter may require a specialist end-position cushioning system, which would necessitate a certain amount of development work. However, searching for the right solution may be easier than it seems – thanks to the self-adjusting cushioning PPS, which combines a number of advantages.

rfid pressure transmitters

Keller RFID pressure transmitters simplify the process of cylinder testing and reduce the occurrence of contamination. These passive RFID transmitters require no wiring for power, as the energy needed for measurement is provided by the close-range RFID reader. When installed in place of the maintenance plug, cylinder pressures can be measured at any time without additional hoses, connections, or gauges.
