Barge Master

Launches Motion Compensation Platform

Drive and control solution keeps platforms stable for offshore cranes

B

arge Master BV, a Dutch company, launched the BM – 001, its first operational motion compensation platform to provide stability and safety to offshore crane operations. The moving platform utilizes a drive and control system from Bosch Rexroth to neutralize the roll, pitch, and heave caused by waves and considerably expands the uses for standard floating cranes.

Crane stability has historically been a major challenge for offshore installation and decommissioning work because even small waves on the sea produce major movements for the tip of the crane, endangering the crew.

“Right now, standard floating cranes encounter difficulty with waves cresting at 30 centimeters. Safe crane operation can no longer be guaranteed,” said Barge Master Director Jan-Paul van den Bos. Working together with Rexroth, Barge Master developed a comprehensive solution, including all the necessary drive and control components to compensate for movements in three degrees of freedom.

Special sensors deliver motion data to the system, calculating how the platform must move to compensate for the action of the waves. Three

degrees of freedom (heave, roll, and pitch) are compensated by three hydraulic cylinders that attach the crane to the hull of the ship. By measuring the motions of the vessel and controlling the motion of the actuators, the cylinders’ movements can compensate for the waves.

The remaining degrees of freedom (surge, sway, and yaw) are compensated by dynamic positioning of the vessel or traditional mooring systems.

The launch of the Barge Master platform allows for cranes weighing approximately 400 tons to operate in swells up to five times greater than allowed by current systems. “With Rexroth motion compensation, we have expanded the application window for the floating cranes—handling waves of up to 150 centimeters,” van den Bos noted.

The Barge Master system is suitable for all kinds of standard marine vessels, significantly expanding the utility of standard cranes, and drastically reducing the manufacturing costs and operating expenses for offshore projects.

‰ HOW DID YOUR CAREER WITH THE NFPA START?

I started at NFPA in July 1984 and worked for about a year and a half writing for and editing the NFPA Reporter and other NFPA publications. Part of my job was translating French ISO documents into English for NFPA’s technical department; this was my first experience with international standards work. In December 1985, Jim Morgan, who was president of NFPA at the time, gave me the opportunity to work full time on international standards, and it turned out to be a great fit for my skill set because I have done this work for the last 28½ years. ‰ WHAT ARE SOME MEMORABLE MOMENTS OF YOUR CAREER, AND WHAT DID THEY TEACH YOU?

The moments I remember best relate to projects and more important, people. Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, we worked on a suite of hydraulic connector standards

that comprehensively covered these products.

Other special projects included the fluid power vocabulary (ISO 5598), pneumatic flow rating (ISO 6358 series—working on those was like a mini-course in the physics of compressed air measurement), and the systems standards (ISO 4413 and 4414) twice—in the mid-1990s and mid-2000s. These were projects that attracted great teams of people. I have to say that it has been the people that I’ve worked with over the years—committee members, others who did the same job as I did in other countries, and NFPA, ISO, and ANSI staff—that has made my career so fulfilling. I learned how to deal with people from different cultures, how to build consensus, and how to deal with conflict productively. I was able to work closely with so many great leaders and learn what matters the most: passion for the work and the team, honesty, and focus on

setting and achieving goals (although I did not always succeed in putting that learning into practice—but I’ve tried). ‰ IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, HOW HAS THE FLUID POWER INDUSTRY GROWN AND CHANGED?

That’s an interesting question, because some of the fluid power industry’s challenges haven’t changed in 30 years. But the good news is that there is something about the technology and the business that continues to attract really good, creative people. Over the years, I’ve seen the industry grow in confidence and outreach, especially to younger people. I think the industry does a better job of explaining the unique

Stringent Testing, benefits of fluid power and the exciting opportunities a career in fluid power can offer. In standards development, industry players have come together to provide the technical infrastructure that allows the technology to be used safely and more easily. Some of this work is in response to regulation, particularly in the European market, but much of it relates to the challenges inherent in fluid power technology: leakage, noise, system design. Standards are the technical facilitators of trade and technology transfer; ISO standards perform these roles on a global scale. ISO standards make it possible • for OEMs that manufacture and sell equipment all over the world to source standardized components locally; • for component manufacturers, large and small, to sell their products worldwide; • for users and manufacturers of fluid power components to benefit from economies of scale that only a global standard can provide; • for new users of fluid power to benefit from the codification of best practices.

‰ HOW WILL ISO STANDARDS PLAY A ROLE IN THE FUTURE OF FLUID POWER?

As I mentioned before, I expect that ISO standards will continue to be a way to share best practices with new users of fluid power, both in new applications and in developing countries. ‰ WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE FLUID POWER PROFESSIONALS TO BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE NFPA?

Even though NFPA membership is at the corporate level, I think the major benefit for the people who are employed by our member companies is having the opportunity to network with their industry peers and to work together on projects that help the entire industry. I have seen so many people use NFPA committee work to develop their leadership and communication skills. ‰ WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP FOR YOU PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY?

There are some big changes ahead. Personally, I am marrying a wonderful man (Robert Mackey of Main Manufacturing Products) and moving from Milwaukee, Wis., to the Flint, Mich., area in June 2014.

Professionally, I plan to start a freelance writing and standards service/consulting business after I leave NFPA. NFPA, the fluid power industry, and international standards work have been such blessings in my life. I am grateful to have had the chance to work with so many talented co-workers and committee people from around the world and to have become great friends with many of them. I am going to miss the work but most of all the people.

This range of adjustability compensates for variances that can occur during the production of plastic tanks.

It is also used in field installations where the distance between mounting holes may be less precise than in a controlled setting. The adjustment can be made by hand, facilitating simple installation. The gauges are used to view liquid levels in hydraulic reservoirs, tanks, large steel mill pumps, gearboxes, bearing housings, hydraulic equipment, crankcases, transformers, and machinery oil reservoirs.

Center measurements range from 6" to 36".

RELIABLE PLANT 2014 RECEIVES HERO’S WELCOME IN SAN ANTONIO

ndustry experts, decision-makers, and practitioners from around the world recently gathered for Noria Corporation’s 15th annual Reliable Plant Conference and Exhibition held April 22-24, 2014, in San Antonio, Tex. The premier event for lubrication, oil analysis, and reliability professionals attracted approximately 1,000 people, including attendees from 42 U.S. states and 27 countries.

Nearly 90 learning sessions on a variety of topics were available for attendees to choose from, with case studies on how Domtar achieved a world-class lube room, how W.R. Grace improved equipment reliability through root cause failure analysis, how Saudi Aramco overcame problems and challenges with lube oil condition monitoring, and how Sinclair developed a lubrication program and achieved a change in culture.

“The learning sessions offered very good information,” said Tony Dunsky of ACH Foods. “There was a lot to take home. We can evaluate our systems from this information very easily and see our strengths and weaknesses. This will provide a path to improve our operation.”

The exhibition hall featured more than 100 industry-leading companies and organizations showcasing a broad range of products and services. Many innovative products were also unveiled, including new offerings from Luneta, Air Sentry, Esco, Intertek, SKF, Turner Industries, and NanoMech.

“I loved the format of learning sessions mixed with exhibit hall time,” noted NV Energy’s Kasey Davis. “I found several products and vendors on the exhibit hall floor that I never knew existed. It is a great place to learn firsthand who the leaders in the industry are.”

Providing an ideal stage for learning, analyzing, comparing, networking, and benchmarking, this year’s event saw an increase in the number of organizations sending groups of employees for the valuable training presented. Group attendance helps assure that everyone is on the same page and exposed to the same training and product information while also offering an opportunity for offsite teambuilding and camaraderie. Among the companies with multiple representatives in attendance were Boeing, DuPont, Holcim, Michelin, MillerCoors, Nissan, and International Paper.

In the opening general session, Noria’s CEO Jim Fitch gave an update on the state of the industry. The International Council for Machinery Lubrication’s Suzy Jamieson then presented the John R. Battle Award for lubrication excellence to the Sinclair Wyoming Refinery.

The keynote address was delivered by Jim Morris, whose meteoric rise from 35-year-old high school teacher to major-league baseball pitcher in three short months was the inspiration for Disney’s blockbuster film “The Rookie.” Morris spoke about the power of dreams and their ability to inspire and transform human life.

Before the event, half-day pre-conference workshops were presented on managing the implementation stage of a world-class lubrication program, interpreting oil analysis reports, and the fundamentals for designing and procuring equipment to increase reliability.

“I attended the pre-conference workshop on managing the implementation stage of a world-class lubrication program with Noria’s Alejandro Meza,” said Craig Pederson of Land O’Lakes. “He is very knowledgeable, and his presentation was great. I took quite a few notes. What I gathered from it will be very useful.”

The International Council for Machinery Lubrication (ICML) offered onsite testing for those looking to earn certifications during the conference. The social highlights of the week were the end-of-day receptions, which gave attendees the opportunity to network with their peers while enjoying hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and local-flavor entertainment.

“This is a great place to come as far as networking, getting to know people, and getting revitalized to go back to your job,” remarked Holcim’s Larry Blevins. “I have a fairly new program, so it is nice to come and talk to some people who have gone through the same thing and maybe made

some mistakes I’m making. It’s always nice to hear someone tell you that this is a mistake before you are about to do something.”

The event came to a close with two random drawings for show-prize giveaways. All registered attendees who visited each of the sponsoring exhibitors’ booths were eligible to win two Craftsman extreme garage tool sets, including workbenches, premium heavy-duty tool chests, rolling cabinets, and lots of extras. The lucky winners were Richard Salazar of Southwest Research Institute and Brad Little of Greenheck Fan Corp.

“I thought I was dreaming,” Salazar said of hearing his name called. “I said, ‘Wow, that’s me.’ I don’t win very often. I haven’t won anything in like 15 years, so I was surprised.”

Little was also stunned to hear his name announced. After he had driven nearly 26 hours from California to San Antonio to attend the conference, winning the show-prize giveaway helped make the journey well worth his time and effort.

“This has been a fantastic experience,” Little added. “I’ve learned a lot and met a lot of people here. Fluid Power MOOC to Debut at University of Minnesota

Have you ever heard of a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC)?

This is a recent trend in academia whereby courses are offered free online to interested students, which is an excellent means for reaching a high number of interested participants. In fact, some MOOCs have been taken by over a million students! Two CCEFP researchers, Professors James Van de Ven and William Durfee, will be offering such a course this fall titled “Fundamentals of Fluid Power.” This course will introduce students to the fundamental principles of fluid power systems, circuits, and components. Students will learn the following: • The benefits and limitations of fluid power compared with other power transmission technologies • The function of common hydraulic components • How to formulate and analyze models of hydraulic components and circuits • How to design hydraulic circuits for specific system requirements The course will be delivered through short, focused video presentations that will include lectures, laboratory demonstrations, large system demonstrations, and interviews with industry experts. The target audience for the course includes entry-level engineers, seniorlevel undergraduate students, and entry-level graduate students. The six-week course will first be offered during Fall 2014.

Students in the ME2110: Creative Decisions and Design class at the Georgia Institute of Technology used pneumatic actuators and control valves to make monkeys fly during a design competition. The project was made possible by a teaching grant from the NFPA Education and Technology Foundation, and the use of pneumatics.

The ME2110 course consists of various lab activities as well as the end-of-semester competition. Student teams are supplied with an air tank, actuators, control valves, tubing, and connectors. During the mechatronics portion of the course, students include these pneumatic components in the design and construction of their competition devices. During the process of designing and building their mechanisms, they receive a large amount of hands-on experience with the pneumatic components.

The size of the ME2110 class has been steadily growing. In the fall 2013 semester, 268 students were enrolled in ME2110. The support provided by the NFPA Foundation has enabled Georgia Tech to expose a larger number of students to pneumatic systems, and introduce them to a variety of pneumatic components.

Hydraulic hose and hose assemblies require careful selection, fabrication, installation, and maintenance to reduce the likelihood of component or system failure, thereby reducing the risk of personal injury or property damage. This article is a review of the application guidelines for hydraulic hose and hose assemblies listed in ISO/TS 17165-2, which was updated and published in April 2013.

Hydraulic hoses, due to their pressure, temperature, and proximity to the operator, can cause severe personal injury and property damage. Some of the recommendations in ISO/TS 17165-2 can also apply to other hoses, such as industrial and automotive hoses.

This part of ISO 17165 provides guidelines for selection, routing, fabrication, installation, replacement, maintenance, and storage of hose and hose assemblies for hydraulic fluid power systems, which are manufactured from hoses conforming to ISO 1436, ISO 3862, ISO 3949, ISO 4079, and ISO 11237, and hose fittings conforming to the six parts of ISO 12151.

The main reason for this technical specification is to promote safety when using hydraulic hose assemblies.

The list of potential conditions and situations that can lead to personal injury or property damage described in ISO/TS-17165-2 is not necessarily all-inclusive. Reasonable and feasible means shall be taken into consideration to reduce the risk of personal injury, property damage, or both. Training, including the information in ISO/TS 17165-2, for operators, maintenance personnel, and other individuals working with hose assemblies under pressure is encouraged.

Below are some of the most common injuries with hydraulic hose: • FLUID INJECTIONS: Fine streams of escaping pressurized fluid can penetrate skin and enter a human body. These fluid injections can cause severe tissue damage and loss of limb.

• WHIPPING HOSES: If a pressurized hose assembly blows apart, the hose fittings can be thrown off at high speed, and the loose hose can flail or whip with great force.

• BURNS FROM CONVEYED FLUIDS: Fluid power media (that is, hydraulic fluid) can reach temperatures that can burn human skin.

• FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS FROM CONVEYED FLUIDS: Most fluid power media, including fire-resistant hydraulic fluids such as phosphate esters and polyol esters, can burn under certain conditions. Fluids that escape from pressurized systems can form a mist or fine spray that can flash or explode upon contact with an ignition source.

• FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS FROM STATICELECTRIC DISCHARGE FROM FLUIDS: Fluid passing through hose can generate static electricity, resulting in static electric discharge. This can create sparks, which

can ignite fluids in the systems or gases in the surrounding atmosphere.

• ELECTRICAL SHOCK: Electrocution could occur if hose conducts electricity through a person. Most hoses are conductive. Many contain metal or have metal hose fittings attached. Even nonconductive hoses can be conduits for electricity if they carry conductive fluids. This should be kept in mind when routing or using hose near electrical sources.

• MECHANISMS CONTROLLED BY FLUID POWER: Mechanisms controlled by fluid power can become hazardous when a hose fails.

Each system should be carefully analyzed.

Routings should then be designed, and hose and related components should be selected to meet the system performance and hose service life requirements, as well as to minimize the risks of personal injury, property damage, or both. The following factors should be considered: • System pressures (internal and external) • Suction

• Temperature • Permeation • Compatibility between hose materials and system fluids • Environment • Static-electric discharge • Sizing • Unintended uses • Specifications and standards • Unusual applications • Hose assembly cleanliness • Hose fittings • Vibration • Hose cover protection • External physical abuse • Swivel hose fittings and connectors • Rotary connectors • Slings and clamps • Minimum bend radius • Elbows and connectors • Lengths • Motion absorption • Tolerances and machine motion • Change in hose length due to changes in pressure • Hose movement and bending

Persons fabricating hose assemblies should be trained in the proper use of equipment and materials.

The manufacturers’ instructions and the practices listed in ISO/TS 17165-2 should be followed. Properly assembled hose fittings are vital to the integrity of a hose assembly. Improperly assembled hose fittings can separate from the hose and can cause serious injury or property damage from whipping hose or from fire or explosion of vapor expelled from the hose. The following steps should be taken when fabricating hose assemblies: • COMPONENT INSPECTION: Prior to assembly, components should be inspected for style, type, cleanliness, loose covers, corrosion, nicks, dents, scores, burrs, sharp edges, size, inside obstructions, visible defects, damage, length, and blisters.

• HOSE FITTING PARTS: If hose fitting parts from different manufacturers are used in the same hose assembly, the performance of the hose assembly should be verified by testing in accordance with ISO 6605.

• COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN HOSE AND HOSE FITTINGS: Hose from one manufacturer is not usually compatible with hose fittings from another, and they should not be intermixed without approval from both manufacturers.

• HOSE ASSEMBLY EQUIPMENT: Equipment for fabricating hose assemblies from one manufacturer is usually not interchangeable with that from another manufacturer. Hose and hose fittings from one manufacturer should not be assembled with the hose assembly equipment

CLEANLINESS OF HOSES AND HOSE ASSEMBLIES: Hose assemblies can be contaminated during fabrication. Hoses and hose assemblies should be cleaned to specified cleanliness levels.

TEMPERATURE: The fabrication of hose assemblies should be performed at an ambient temperature over 0°C or 32°F, unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer.

ASSEMBLY INSPECTION: After assembly, examine hose assembly for visible defects and interior obstructions, such as tube bulges, etc.

MARKING: Hose assemblies shall be marked

The manufacturer should make available additional instructions on mounting, storage, and operating conditions.

1. Do a pre-installation inspection.

2. Handle the hose assembly with care during installation.

3. Secure and protect the hose assembly from external damage.

4. Route the hose away from any obstructions.

5. Do not twist the hose.

6. Follow the recommended assembly torques.

7. Do a system checkout.

A system of age control should be maintained to ensure that hose is used before its shelf life has expired.

Shelf life is the period of time when it is reasonable to expect the hose to retain full capabilities for rendering the intended service. Hose should be stored in a manner that facilitates age control and first-in, first-out usage based on the manufacturing date on the hose or hose assembly.

Unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer: • The shelf life of rubber hose in bulk form or hose made from two or more materials is 28 quarters or seven years from the date of manufacture, with an extension of 12 quarters or three years, if stored in accordance with ISO 2230.

• The shelf life of thermoplastic and polytetrafluoroethylene hose is considered to be unlimited.

• Hose assemblies that pass visual inspection and proof test should not be stored for longer than two years.

Hose and hose assemblies should be stored in accordance with the storage conditions defined in ISO 8331.

When storing hose, care should be taken to avoid damage that could reduce hose life. The manufacturers’ information for storage and shelf life should be followed. Examples of factors that can adversely affect hose and hose assemblies in storage are • temperature and humidity; • ozone, ultraviolet light, direct sun, or heat rays; • oils, petrol or gasoline, kerosene, or their vapors and solvents; • corrosive liquids and fumes; • rodents and insects; • radioactive materials; • sharp edges and abrasive surfaces; and • electric or strong magnetic fields.

THE WAR FOR TALENT is over, and talent has won. Technology and globalization have dramatically changed the way we work over the last 20 to 30 years. However, very little has changed in how we hire and manage staff, which has led to low employee engagement and productivity, as well as high employee turnover.

Instead of doing the routine, tactical, and predictable work of yesteryear, the Social Age requires us to be more strategic, creative, and innovative—more solutions oriented. Yet, for the most part, we are still hiring for skills and experience, and using the same levers we have used for decades (if not centuries) to motivate and manage staff. We must evolve our business practices to remain competitive in our digitally connected, globally oriented economy.

With any evolutionary process, a guide or roadmap proves invaluable. When your company decides to take the leap and join the Social Age, there are 5 C’s to adhere to so you can maximize employment efficiency and effectiveness, retain your staff, and ensure that your employees are fully engaged on a daily basis.

CORRECT HIRING We must start this evolution with hiring the right people; without them, efforts to engage and retain staff become moot. The Industrial Age paradigm emphasized hiring for skills and experience. But skills can be taught, and in today’s rapidly changing world, experience is far less important than agility and the ability to learn and adapt.

To not only survive but also thrive in the Social Age, companies need to hire for both culture fit and competencies—those innate abilities that can’t be taught, but will make people successful in the job.

Proper interviewing technique is essential to guaranteeing you get the right hire. Unlike the stock market, when it comes to potential job candidates, past performance is indicative of future results. The majority of interview questions have to be answered with past examples of how the candidate actually dealt with realworld scenarios.

Do not fall into the old trap of believing what a candidate would do is what they did do, or more important, will do.

CLASSIFY AND MANAGE APPROPRIATELY Even when you do everything right during the hiring process, you may still be surprised once the employee comes on board. Team dynamics or changing personal circumstances can affect individual behavior and performance.

You must continually keep your finger on the pulse of your staff—a daunting task to many managers who either try to devote equal time and energy across the board or who spend time with the wrong people.

Employees typically come in three “flavors”: Critical People, Squeaky Wheels, and the Fat Middle. Most managers end up spending most of their time trying to grease their Squeaky Wheels, which perpetuates poor performance

or behavior. Counterintuitively, by devoting the majority of your attention to your Critical People, you will bolster the productivity of the whole team. Squeaky Wheels? Train, motivate, or move them on. Quickly.

COMPENSATE FAIRLY Many companies diligently strive to create attractive incentive programs in an effort to engage and retain staff. Unfortunately, these efforts actually may be counterproductive to accomplishing these goals.

Studies have suggested that rewards can narrow our focus, innovation, creativity, strategic thinking, and problem solving—the very things needed from a Social Age Workforce. Higher pay does not necessarily equal higher productivity. Managers should set their salary benchmark at or a little above market rate for individual functions. Even more importantly, managers should ensure that employees feel they are being adequately compensated for the work they do, and this can only be accomplished by speaking to them directly.

CURRENCIES OF CHOICE Once your staff feels well paid, real productivity and engagement can be unlocked by tapping into their internal motivators or Currencies of Choice. What your staff really needs to be fulfilled and to “go the extra mile” is to • work for someone they trust and respect in a company they support,

• be appreciated and have their voice and opinions respected, • have a firm career path that allows them to grow and develop, • realize their underlying motivators, and • be able to do what they do best every day.

By understanding and acknowledging your team’s individual Currencies of Choice, you can help to keep them engaged and decrease turnover.

anufacturers of construction equipment are always looking for ways to make their equipment more efficient and cost effective. And now these manufacturers are specifying high-performance hydraulic fluids formulated with DYNAVIS® technology to “factory-fill” their excavators, wheel loaders, and many other types of equipment operating with hydraulic systems.

Most of the movements performed by construction equipment are powered by hydraulic systems, and much of the fuel consumed is used for operating the hydraulic pump—the heart of the hydraulic system. he development of DYNAVIS® hydraulic fluid technology was born out of a fundamental desire to focus more closely on the fluids used in fluid power, rather than the mechanical systems. We realized that with our know-how, we are able to modify fluid viscosity in a controlled way to minimize “internal leakage” in hydraulic systems. The result is increased overall hydraulic efficiency.

vonik saw a trend in the fluid power market that was moving in the direction of creating higher-efficiency hydraulic systems. It was obvious to us that OEMs were putting a lot of resources into the effort to improve the efficiency of their hydraulic equipment, both mobile and stationary. From our perspective, we saw that hydraulic fluid was not being sufficiently considered as a major contributor to achieving higher efficiency.

We wanted to be part of the development of a new generation of highefficiency hydraulic fluids, and we began with fundamental studies in our

Shortly thereafter, we began a series of performance demonstrations in the field. At that time, no standardized testing protocol was available to us.

Global Manufacturing Update

May 9, 2014 – The global economy continues to expand, boosted by strengths in North America and Europe. Yet, there are also notable weaknesses, particularly in Asia and South America, where growth is decelerating. As a result, four of the top 10 markets for U.S.-manufactured goods experienced declining manufacturing activity levels in April, up from two in March.

The four countries with manufacturing contractions were Brazil, China, Hong Kong, and Japan.

Fortunately, our two largest trading partners— Canada and Mexico—expanded modestly in April, albeit at a slower pace than a few months ago. At the same time, the fastest pace of growth among our top trading partners was in Europe, including the United Kingdom and Germany.

Even with the easing, growth in manufacturing demand and output remained positive, increasing modestly. Roughly one-quarter of the global PMI data stems from activity in the United States, which continues to see a rebound from winterrelated slowdowns earlier in the year. In fact, Markit reported that production growth (up

from 57.5 to 58.2) was at its highest level since March 2011. Nonetheless, even with recent progress, the U.S. market continues to have its challenges, with stagnant real GDP growth in the first quarter, mixed news about the labor market, and lingering uncertainties about the economy and governmental policies.

Most notably, one of the larger U.S. concerns so far this year has been export growth. Manufactured goods exports in the first quarter rose just 1.1% relative to the first three months of 2013, continuing a trend of decelerated growth in international sales over the past two years.

On the positive side, manufactured goods exports achieved an all-time high last year, with $1.38 trillion in goods sold overseas. We remain hopeful that the export market will pick up in the coming months. Moreover, most of our top markets saw modest gains year-to-date

relative to the same time frame last year. The exception is Canada, our largest trading partner, with exports down 0.4% year-to-date.

Trade negotiations and legislation, as well as NAM trade events, are top of mind this month, aptly designated as World Trade Month (an annual designation by the President). Debate on Capitol Hill is heating up on the reauthorization of the Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank, a top priority of manufacturers, and efforts also continue to move forward the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB), which expired more than 17 months ago. Bilateral and plurilateral discussions on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) talks as well as U.S.-EU trade negotiations are also ongoing.

On key policy issues, manufacturers won a partial victory on conflict minerals, but are awaiting action on their request to stay the May reporting deadline. The Obama Administration released its annual report on intellectual property (IP) rights overseas, echoing manufacturers’ concerns in several countries, including China, Russa, Brazil, India, Canada, and others.

In April, Sens. Chris Coons (D-DE) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced new trade leglislation, on which manufacturers are seeking action.

Bosch Rexroth Expands Hydraulics Operation in Pennsylvania Distribution Center

Manufacturing Facility

‰ Bosch Rexroth marked the opening of its new hydraulics manufacturing and distribution center in Bethlehem, Pa., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and facility tour for customers, distributors, and local officials.

The new manufacturing facility houses the company’s valve and manifold manufacturing center for mobile and industrial hydraulics, while the new logistics and distribution facility handles shipments to over 500 customers, including its nationwide network of Drive and Control distributors.

The $2.2-million Brodhead Road expansion adds about 150,000 square feet, giving the company approximately 200,000 square feet over two buildings for the distribution and manufacturing operation.

In addition to valves and manifolds, the new manufacturing facility produces industrial, mobile, and compact controls, and provides testing and service support. The new distribution and logistics facility supports customers with functions such as shipping, receiving, logistics, quality control, traffic management, and accounting. The company’s overall Bethlehem operations also include production for large hydraulic systems and power units, which are produced in its City Line Road facilities. www.boschrexroth-us.com.

KOMET and SCHUNK Hold Joint Distributor Event ‰ KOMET, a global manufacturer for bore machining, reaming, and threading, and SCHUNK, a worldwide leader in clamping technology and gripping systems, held a joint distributor event on April 9, 2014 at KOMET of America’s facility in Schaumberg, Ill. The five-hour event consisted of morning presentations of products that were shown working together seamlessly in the afternoon in the machining center on the production floor. Three demos were displayed on the machining center using SCHUNK work holding and tool holding with KOMET cutting tools. All types of work pieces and various materials, such as cast iron and aluminum, were machined, showcasing both company’s tools and technology. www.schunk.com

Bigger pieces are cut by a CAT 330 excavator with shears attachment then sorted and piled high by a Hitachi 450 excavator with claw attachment at Rumetco, a recycling plant in Wilmington, CA. None of this would be possible if not for the power of hydraulics.

In Memoriam Arthur W. DesMarais, III Arthur W. DesMarais, III, age 76, passed away at his home while surrounded by his family on Thursday, April 24, 2014. Arthur was a retired rebuilt supervisor for GM’s Hydramatic Plant and former president of the National and Detroit chapter of the International Fluid Power Society. He served on the S.A.E. Standard Committee, was a former teacher at both Henry Ford College and the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Career Technical Center. Arthur enjoyed golf, making custom gulf clubs, and model trains. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
