As we continue moving through this year’s summer months with its seasonal uptick in outdoor activity, social get-togethers with friends and family and so forth, one activity that is not seasonal is minding our own health and wellness.

Ways to do that are the focus of this issue.

As you thumb through the pages you’re going to see us look at the nuances around “cutting carbs.” You know, carbohydrates (“carbs”) have gotten something of a bad rap over the years. The 255E South Best Ave. Walnutport, PA 18088

reality is carbs are one of the three macronutrients our bodies rely on to function properly. We’re bringing you a lot of high-caliber information on the topic in “Cutting Carbs.”

We’re also going to focus on the importance of hydration – for everyone, but with a special emphasis on older citizens. Especially at this time of year and with the kind of heat we’re getting hydration has never been more important for good health and wellness. Be sure to read “Stay Hydrated!” for the details.

We’re also going to look at the concept of “10,000 steps” and how it might relate to you. Included in that article is interesting – and also somewhat amusing – information on the origination of the 10,000-step concept. It is almost definitely going to be new information for you. Do you grind your teeth? A lot of people do – myself included. Like most people, my teeth grinding is mainly, but not always, in my sleep.

To deal with this problem I have worn a “bite guard” at night for a number of years. I used to wake up with jaw pain and a sense of loose teeth in the morning – it was terrible. The bite guard has made a huge difference for me. In “Do You Grind Your Teeth?” we’ll examine some of the causes of teeth grinding – known as bruxism – and

also look at some possible solutions.

So those are the stories we’re covering in this year’s Health and Wellness issue. We hope you find them of value. Be sure and join us next time when we completely switch gears and focus on “back-to-school” – can you believe we’ve reached that point in the year? Time flies. See you then.

Here’s the thing to know: cutting carbohydrates has benefits, but that’s not the same as eliminating them, which can be detrimental.

Carbohydrates can be part of a nourishing and balanced eating pattern. When you strategically choose carbs that are higher in fiber and nutrients and lower in added sugar you can change the carb balance in your favor.

The Carbohydrates “Bad Rap” Carbohydrates, or carbs, have gotten a bad reputation over the years, often demonized by popular diet trends and wellness influencers.

However, the truth about carbohydrates is far more nuanced.

Cutting carbs drastically may offer temporary results, but for many people, this approach isn’t sustainable. Plus, cutting carbs may result in nutritional gaps or other undesirable outcomes.

Instead of seeing carbs as the enemy, take a more balanced approach that fosters a positive relationship with food and keeps your body functioning at its best. As always, before making any dramatic adjustment to your diet, it’s a good idea to talk to a doctor first.

Why Carbs Matter Carbs are one of the primary macronutrients, alongside fats and proteins. They serve as a major energy source for the body, particularly for the brain and muscles. Carbs are broken down into glucose by the body, which fuels everything from your daily activities to intense workouts.

Complex carbs, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, also come packed with essential vitamins, fiber and other nutrients that your body needs to thrive. For many people – maybe you – walking is their preferred method of transportation. Not only is it accessible and free, but it’s low-impact and beneficial for your physical and mental health.

You’ve likely heard 10,000 steps a day is the goldstandard, but this isn’t necessarily true for everyone.

Logistically speaking, 10,000 steps a day equates to approximately five miles, though there may be some variance based on your stride. How long it will take you to get in this many steps is also pretty individualized.

“10,000 Steps” History Why is 10,000 steps the magic number? Here’s some history for you: The recommendation originated from a Japanese company’s 1960s marketing campaign for their pedometer. The name of the pedometer translated into “10,000 steps.” There was no research to substantiate the claim that 10,000 steps was the gold-standard. The manufacturer chose the name because it was a nice round, easy-to-remember number. But with the pedometer’s name, the company simply set a higher bar for their population to encourage healthier behavior.

What's not up for debate is that walking is great exercise for anyone with lower-body mobility because it is low-impact and can be easily modified with speed and intensity. It can also promote weight loss and increase muscle definition in the legs.

10,000 can be unrealistic and even unsafe. Adding steps gradually is the best way to give your muscles and joints time to adjust.

Benefits of the Steps Because walking helps to release endorphins and serotonin, the hormones that make us feel good, walking can elevate the mood by relieving anxiety and other feelings of stress. Need a midday pick-me-up? Take a lap during your lunch break or walk and talk on the phone during a work call.

“Getting your steps in” may reduce the risk of chronic disease. Walking can lower the risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and premature death. It can also decrease the occurrence of obesity, sleep apnea, hypertension, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), per a 2022 study published in Nature Medicine.

To a degree, walking strengthens your lower body muscles including the glutes, hamstrings, quads, and calves, along with your core and lower back. Like any exercise or movement performed in a standing position, walking engages your core.

Your engaged core includes the lower back and that’s why many people feel relief in their lower back once they start walking consistently.

Walking is also accessible. You can do it any place, any time – indoors or out.

How Many Steps?

There isn’t one universal answer on how many steps a day is “enough.” It depends on your ability, current fitness level, and time constraints.

That said, the sweet spot for lowering the risk of disease and premature death is walking between 7,000 to 8,000 steps a day. More steps than that may plateau benefits according to a 2023 study out of the University of Granada.

Keep in mind other factors like age, physical health, a city’s walkability, or access to a treadmill will also play a role in determining your realistic goals. If you’re in a sedentary job and don’t move much throughout the day, you’ll want to gradually work on increasing your daily steps until you reach the 7,000 to 8,000 range or greater.

• Older adults experience body composition changes that over time leave them with less water in their bodies to start with.

• Seniors are more likely to take medications that increase dehydration risk.

Additionally, older adults' bodies don't regulate temperature as efficiently as those of younger people. This means that during exercise or activity, seniors are more likely to become dehydrated through sweating.

Symptoms of Dehydration Even mild dehydration can cause an array of uncomfortable and debilitating symptoms. Early dehydration symptoms include: • Dark-colored urine, urinating less frequently • Fatigue, or feeling weak • Irritability • Dizziness • Headaches • Muscle cramps in arms or legs • Dry mouth • Confusion, decreased cognitive function The tiredness and lack of coordination that may result from dehydration can also lead to falls and injury. The best way to prevent dehydration is the simplest: drink more water throughout the day.

Hydration = How Much Water?

As a general rule, you should take one-third of your body weight and drink that number of ounces in fluids. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, aim to drink at least 50 ounces or about 6 cups of water each day.

The National Academy of Medicine suggests an adequate intake of daily fluids of about 13 cups for men and 9 cups for women aged 51 and older.

All sources of fluids – drinking water, food, and beverages – are counted in these recommendations.

However, it’s best to talk to your doctor to determine how much water is right for you.

Do You Grind Your Teeth?

If you wake up with jaw pain after what should have been a night of restful sleep, have you considered whether or not you’re grinding your teeth? Bruxism is a term that’s used to describe the habitual action of excessive teeth clenching or grinding, which can lead to both tooth and jaw pain. The condition can take place during waking hours, but more commonly it happens at night, when you are asleep.

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is repetitive jaw muscle activity that is generally characterized by clenching or grinding of the teeth. There are a few telltale signs of bruxism that a dentist will likely see which can include significant tooth wear.

Reasons for Teeth Grinding There can be a range of reasons why a person might grind their teeth, including certain medications, a high level of caffeine intake and underlying health conditions.

A definite culprit is stress and anxiety. It is one of the main reasons behind bruxism. Whether you are in the middle of final exams at school, or you are transitioning to a new job, the stress and anxiety associated with those kinds of situations can lead to teeth grinding. In situations that could be described as temporary, the related bruxism could be a temporary condition as well.

It is also possible to experience bruxism if you live with a chronic health condition. Bruxism has been associated with a number of chronic health conditions, including Parkinson's disease, encephalitis, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury and hyperthyroidism. Bruxism could also point to an underlying sleep disorder, such as sleep apnea or insomnia.

How to Stop the Grinding If your dentist says you are clenching and grinding your teeth, there are a few potential solutions: Use a dental night guard. Lots of patients may find relief from teeth grinding by using a dental night guard. Night guards can be custom-built by a dentist, or can also be purchased over-thecounter. In addition to general teeth protection, a night guard also preserves previous dental work.

Avoid stimulants. Because smoking, caffeine and alcohol have been associated with bruxism, scaling back or cutting out these habits could help manage the condition.

Treat a sleeping disorder. If it’s been identified that your jaw clenching is actually the result of an underlying sleep disorder (such as sleep apnea), treating the sleep disorder (under the supervision of a sleep medicine specialist) could help correct the teeth grinding problem.

If you are concerned that you are grinding and clenching your teeth, pay a visit to your dentist so he or she can assess your symptoms and offer potential treatment options.

Almost any medication can cause side effects, but some can create a surprising challenge: weight gain. This isn’t just a cosmetic concern – even small increases in weight can affect your overall health and, in some cases, interfere with recovery from the very condition you’re trying to treat.

Here are some medication categories that could cause weight gain, along with information on what you can do to try to address that: 1. Diabetes Drugs / Maintaining a healthy weight is an important part of any treatment for type 2 diabetes. But some of the drugs prescribed to help manage the condition often result in weight gain.

One option to address this is to look at a class of type 2 diabetes drugs known as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists that can cause patients to lose a significant amount of weight. Talk to your doctor if weight gain is a concern to you.

2. Antidepressants / If you’ve been on an antidepressant and you’ve put on weight, it could be a sign of improved mood if weight loss was a

symptom of your depression. Significant weight gain, on the other hand, is likely a side effect of the medication itself. With newer, second-generation antidepressants, there is often no weight gain. Work with your medical team to find the best treatment for your situation.

3. Beta-blockers / Beta-blockers work by slowing the heart rate, the heart’s workload and its output of blood, all of which lowers blood pressure. That’s why they’re often prescribed as a treatment for hypertension, angina and irregular heartbeat. If Continued on page 26

Conventional wisdom suggests that a fear of doing anything that could provoke a seizure would figure into why people with epilepsy are less inclined to be physically active. If you’re taking anti-epilepsy drugs and experiencing weight gain, talk to your doctor about possible alternatives associated with weight loss.

If switching meds isn’t an option, that doesn’t mean you’re powerless over the extra pounds.

Consider meeting with a registered dietitian who can help you learn how to make healthier food choices. Getting more exercise can also help treat weight gain, especially a combination of cardio (such as brisk walking) and strength training.

Sleep tips: 6 steps to better sleep

You're not doomed to toss and turn every night. Consider simple tips for better sleep, from setting a sleep schedule to including physical activity in your daily routine.

Many factors can interfere with a good night's sleep — from work stress and family responsibilities to illnesses. It's no wonder that quality sleep is sometimes elusive.

You might not be able to control the factors that interfere with your sleep. However, you can adopt habits that encourage better sleep. Start with these simple tips.

1. Stick to a sleep schedule Set aside no more than eight hours for sleep. The recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult is at least seven hours. Most people don't need more than eight hours in bed to be well rested.

Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, including weekends. Being consistent reinforces your body's sleep-

wake cycle.

If you don't fall asleep within about 20 minutes of going to bed, leave your bedroom and do something relaxing. Read or listen to soothing music. Go back to bed when you're tired. Repeat as needed, but continue to maintain your sleep schedule and wake-up time.

2. Pay attention to what you eat and drink Don't go to bed hungry or stuffed. In particular, avoid heavy or large meals within a couple of hours of bedtime.

10 ways to prevent the cold and flu As temperatures drop and cold and flu season approaches, there are 10 effective ways you can help prevent catching the flu and cold this season.

1. Get a flu vaccination. Check with your physician about getting a flu shot this year. The vaccination is available at doctors’ offices and pharmacies, so after getting the okay from your doctor, get the shot early in the season.

2. Wash your hands with soap and warm water. Wash your hands afterward every time you shake hands with someone. Washing your hands before eating and touching your face is a crucial way to prevent the spread of harmful viruses and bacteria.

If your furniture won’t all fit, label what goes and what stays. Give your future floor plan to your movers so they can see what goes where on moving day.

2. Label, label, label. Label every box with all contents and identify the room the box belongs in. Color coding can help immensely after moving day: red-marked boxes in dining room, green in living room, etc.

3. Find a reliable moving company. Moving heavy furniture is exhausting, and accidents can occur that harm people and belongings. Reputable, professional movers can save you a ton of aggravation, but if that isn’t in your budget, enlist plenty of strong, capable helpers and make sure they know the full scope of the job ahead of time.

4. Protect your mattresses and foundation. The best way is to fully encase them in plastic mattress protectors. Truck rental companies sometimes provide these, but you can easily find them on Amazon or at your local moving truck rental store in a variety of sizes. Ideally, transport a mattress flat and don’t place heavy boxes or furniture on top. If you move the mattress on its side, surround it with large pieces of cardboard to help stabilize the mattress and prevent it from folding or wobbling. 9. Check the weather. If you think there is a chance of a storm on moving day, have tarps and towels on hand to protect your furniture. Keep your furniture and mattresses as dry as possible by going through the garage or another path that minimizes exposure before going into the truck.

10. Clear the path. Clear a route for the movers and anticipate what could present a challenge. If some items seem too big for the doorway, removing the doorstop or even the door itself can create the needed space. Many sliding doors have a special release to temporarily remove one door to create a larger opening.

One of the best moving-day survival tips we’ve heard is to pack a small overnight bag with essentials and have your pillows, sheets and blankets handy for the first night in your new home. Set up and make your bed as soon as it’s unloaded. Get a bite to eat and then call it a night — the tedious chore of unpacking can wait until you’re rested.
