The Importance of Wellness By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette

Welcome to our health and wellness issue. As my mom used to say, “The importance of your health cannot be overstated.” In this issue we’re going to discuss health and wellness from several angles. The first thing we’re going to look at is a “wellness hour.” Have you ever considered creating a wellness hour in your weekly schedule?

The benefits can play out across many of the functions of your life – everything from clearing mental space for new creativity to a clear, new focus on your daily life and work. We found a source article at ahealthyliving.com that is packed with valuable information. Please see “Creating Your Own Wellness Hour” for all the guidance. If you want to supplement your wellness hour you might consider also creating a short “wellness getaway” to ease some of the stress of daily living. By prioritizing self-care and making time for yourself to have a massage, a facial or a restful overnight getaway you can give yourself a valuable reset. We’re also going to look at the function of sweat in our lives. According to the Cleveland Clinic, Continued on page 4 “The Beautiful Stone Church at the Top of the Park”

sweating does have benefits for us, but maybe not quite all the benefits we are often led to believe. In “Is Sweating Good for You?” we examine the primary benefit of sweating, as well as benefits derived from the activities we undertake that lead to sweating. Moving to mental health and wellness, we look at what it means in this time of big ideas and accomplishments to celebrate the small personal victories in life. With doomscrolling pulling our

mental health downwards into negative territory, learning how to acknowledge and then celebrate more “everyday” personal victories has major positive mental health benefits. Learn how you can celebrate the smaller victories in your life in “Mental Health: Celebrating Small Victories.” We are also taking a look at gallbladder health and the dreaded gallstones. Gallstones, which can be as small as a grain of rice and can cause major pain, are something to be avoided. We share how nutrition is key to gallbladder health, as well as which foods can have a positive impact and which to avoid if you can. See “The Gall Bladder and Nutrition” to learn more. You know, we were going to have a story on “how the body ages”. It’s quite interesting, because it does not age as a single unit – different parts of the body (organs) begin their aging processes at different times. But instead, we’re looking at the danger we all face from extreme heat, particularly when we have “heat dome” situations as we recently encountered. Please see “Weathering Summer’s Heat as a Senior” for more information. So that is this year’s health-and-wellness issue. We hope you find the information valuable. Please join us for our next issue that will focus on backto-school and eye health. See you then! Creating Your Own Wellness Hour SOURCE: ahealthyliving.com

In our fast-paced world, where responsibilities often overshadow personal needs, the concept of dedicating time to wellness can feel like a luxury rather than a necessity. However, prioritizing your well-being is crucial for maintaining balance and happiness. One effective way to do this is by creating a “Wellness Hour” in your week. This dedicated time allows you to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with yourself, ultimately fostering a healthier lifestyle. Let’s explore how to design your very own Wellness Hour. Wellness Hour Importance A Wellness Hour is more than just a time slot in your calendar; it’s an opportunity to focus on your mental, emotional, and physical health. In a world that often glorifies busyness, carving out this hour can lead to significant benefits in these areas: • Stress Reduction: Taking time for yourself helps to alleviate stress and anxiety. • Enhanced Creativity: Engaging in activities that you love can spark creativity and improve problem-solving skills. • Improved Relationships: When you take care of yourself, you are better equipped to nurture your relationships with others. • Increased Productivity: Paradoxically, stepping away from your work can boost your efficiency when you return. By committing to a Wellness Hour, you are investing in a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Scheduling your Wellness Hour The first step in establishing a Wellness Hour is to identify when you can realistically set aside this time. Here are some tips to help you schedule it effectively: • Choose a Consistent Time: Whether it's Sunday morning or Wednesday evening, consistency helps turn this hour into a habit. • Block It Off: Just like you would a work meeting, block off this time in your calendar to minimize scheduling conflicts. • Communicate: Let your family, friends, or coworkers know about your dedicated Wellness Hour. This way, they can support you in preserving this time. Remember, the goal is to create a sacred hour that you look forward to, so choose a time that Continued on page 6

Here are some common challenges and ways to overcome them: • Time Constraints: If an hour feels too long, start with just 20 or 30 minutes. Gradually work your way up as you become more comfortable. • Guilt: Remind yourself that taking time for self-care is not selfish; it’s essential for your overall

well-being. • Distractions: Put away your phone and other devices to minimize interruptions. Consider using apps that promote focus and mindfulness. By acknowledging and addressing these barriers, you can make your Wellness Hour a reality rather than a goal.

Mental Health: Celebrating Small Victories SOURCE: ahealthyliving.com (edited)

In a world that often emphasizes grand achievements and milestones, it’s easy to overlook the smaller victories that pave the path to success. Yet, celebrating more minor accomplishments can have a positive effect on our motivation, selfesteem, and overall well-being. Let’s dive into why celebrating small victories is essential to our mental wellbeing. The Power of Small Wins Small victories are those moments where we achieve a goal, no matter how minor and everyday it may seem. This could be anything from completing a workout, finishing a book, or even getting out of bed on a tough day. Each contributes to a sense of progress, reinforcing the idea that we are capable of achieving our goals. Research in psychology indicates that celebrating

small victories can trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. This chemical boost not only enhances our mood but also strengthens our motivation to pursue further goals. The Psychological Benefits When we take the time to acknowledge our achievements, we engage in a form of selfvalidation. This recognition can combat feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, which are common mental barriers to motivation. Moreover, celebrating small victories can reduce Continued on page 10

stress and anxiety. In our fast-paced lives, we often focus on what we haven't accomplished rather than what we have. By shifting our perspective to celebrate our progress, we create a more balanced outlook on our journey. Building Momentum Celebrating small victories isn’t just about feeling good in the moment; it’s also about building momentum for future success. When we recognize

our achievements, we create a sense of progress that fuels our drive to tackle larger goals. The more we celebrate, the larger our victories become. Whether it’s treating yourself to a favorite snack after completing a challenging task or sharing your success with friends, these celebrations can reinforce positive behaviors and encourage continued effort. By creating a culture of celebration, we surround ourselves with positivity, which can also be contagious to those around us. Tips for Celebrating Create a Celebration Ritual: Establish a personal ritual for celebrating your victories. This could be as simple as a private “victory dance”, a special treat, or taking a moment to reflect on what you’ve accomplished. Share Your Wins: Don’t be afraid to share your small victories with friends, family, or social media. Sharing can amplify the joy of your accomplishments and inspire others to celebrate theirs. Visual Reminders: Use a journal, a vision board, or an app to track your small victories. Visual reminders can serve as a motivational tool, showcasing your journey and progress over time. without judgment. Understand that every step forward, no matter how small, is worthy of recognition. The Long-Term Impact Incorporating the practice of celebrating small victories into our daily lives can lead to long-term benefits. As we consistently acknowledge our achievements, we foster a mindset that embraces challenge and resilience. This shift not only enhances our motivation but also impacts our relationships, work, and overall happiness. Over time, the skills we develop through celebrating small victories can help us tackle larger challenges with confidence. When faced with setbacks, we can draw on our history of accomplishments to remind ourselves of our capabilities.

The Gall Bladder and Nutrition SOURCE: coast-chiropractic.co.uk (edited)

The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ, located on the right side of the body, directly under the liver. It acts as a storage facility for the pint or so of bile the liver produces every day. Bile is a substance containing bile acids that are essential for digestion and absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins, as well as aiding the digestion of proteins, starches and more. The gallbladder stores the bile until food arrives in the stomach. When that happens, the cells of the intestinal walls secrete a hormone that causes the gallbladder to contract and release bile into the stomach where it gets to work, digesting fats and aiding digestion. Dreaded Gallstones If the liver is over-loaded, toxins can get dumped into the gall bladder which can lead to gallbladder issues, including inflammation and gallstones. Poor diet is a main contributor to gallstones, as well as food sensitivities, including both gluten and cow’s milk proteins.

juice in water, for example, helps stimulate the production of bile, which acts like a natural laxative, and increases stomach acid, helping you break down food more effectively. Bitter foods include limes, grapefruit, artichokes, celery, spinach, watercress, swiss chard and kale. Essential Fatty Acids: Use unfiltered extra virgin olive oil, walnut and avocado oils for salad dressings. Lecithin: Adding lecithin granules to your morning porridge/muesli improves the way your body breaks down fat. You can also sprinkle 1 tablespoon into yogurt or juice. Vitamin C: A deficiency of Vitamin C can lead to the formation of gallstones. Aim for 3,000mg daily. Oranges, tomatoes, kiwi fruits, berries and dark green leafy vegetables are all great sources of Vitamin C. And finally, as always, water is essential to your health and that includes the health of your gall bladder.

Weathering Summer’s Heat as a Senior SOURCE: Various

According to aarp.org, high temperatures claim more older victims each year than floods, tornadoes and hurricanes – combined. As heat waves and heat domes strike in more and more places, including our own greater Lehigh Valley region,

you might be wondering what you can do to protect yourself or an elderly person you may know. Because when it’s hot these days, it’s dangerously hot. Extreme heat gets more dangerous every year for all of us, but especially for seniors – if only because we’re one year older. In this article using information from aarp.org, we are going to look at how you can help yourself, or a senior you know, survive a heat wave. A Coolable Living Space Your objective here is to create a “coolable” living space. If you don’t already have air conditioning,

you should consider getting it. But you don’t have to take on the expense of cooling a large house. In an overall larger living space, just having a single coolable room can get you through the hottest days. In addition to an air-conditioning unit – either a window unit or a unit that stands on the floor and vents out through a window – install opaque blinds or curtains to close during the hottest part of each day. If you are unable to have an air-conditioning unit, install screens so you can at least open your windows for cross ventilation on cool nights. Review Your Meds In case you don’t know, some medications including diuretics, blood pressure medications,

antidepressants, sedatives, antipsychotics and others can affect your heat tolerance and hydration. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist about any precautions you should take during heat waves. Going back to the start of this article, it’s worth repeating: High temperatures claim more older victims each year than floods, tornadoes and hurricanes – combined. Taking precautions and maximizing daily hydration are key to weathering the hottest days. is overheating gets help. During a heatwave or heat dome episode, time is of the essence for those in need. Cool Early and Often The time to take precautions and get prepared is before the extreme heat settles in and becomes too oppressive. If you have air conditioning, turn it on early to establish a level of coolness in your overall living space before the temperature gets too high. One of the things you can do to keep yourself from overheating is to take cool showers. Also, use damp cloths on your neck, wrists and forehead, or hold your wrists under cool running water. Having a small fan nearby to promote evaporative cooling throughout the day and night is something else to do. Protect Yourself When temperatures skyrocket, the body relies on an arsenal of responses to protect itself. But as we age, the body’s cooling system becomes less

effective. Older people feel less thirst, even when dehydrated. As blood vessels stiffen, the heart has to work even harder to push blood to the surface to radiate heat outwards. When an older person overheats, their blood pressure drops and core temperature rises. If they don’t find a way to cool down, what begins as heat exhaustion – with symptoms such as dizziness and nausea – can progress to heatstroke, an urgent condition that can cause irreversible organ damage or death. Protect yourself: hydrate and create a cooling space.

The way antiperspirants work is that they temporarily reduce sweat production in the areas where they are applied, most commonly the underarms. Note that the body has millions of sweat glands distributed throughout the skin, so blocking sweat in one small area doesn’t prevent the body from cooling itself effectively, which is the primary function of sweat. For those who have excessive sweating, antiperspirants can significantly improve their lives without impeding the body’s cooling system. Lehigh Township Historical Society News submitted by Ruth Hall Kent

The historical society is gearing up for a busy end of summer and fall with events and fundraisers that are typically part of our schedule. We have also had a lot of visitors to the Historical Centre Museum the past few weeks. People are doing research on families and properties as well as stopping by with items to donate and tour the museum. We are open on Tuesday mornings except the second Tuesday each month. Our meetings are held on the second Monday at 6:30pm every month so we are working at the museum starting at 3pm that day. While we are open each week, our next Open House will be on Sunday August 16th from 1 to 4 pm at the Museum in Pennsville. The St. Paul’s Schoolhouse will not be open until September 20th. If you are retired (or not), looking for something to do a couple hours a week (or more), and if you have an interest in local history, stop in and check us out. We are always looking for people to volunteer their time and skills in the museum and with events and fundraisers. Helping with

Our Gravestone Preservation Workshop has been cancelled the past two scheduled dates due to lack of interest. We do not have any future dates planned at this time. We will post any future dates on our Facebook page and website. Mark your calendar for Saturday October 24th for the society’s 25th Anniversary Historical Tour of the Township. We are planning a bus ride around the township to see landmarks and hear the history of places in Lehigh Township. (This is similar to the tour of the one-room schools we held in 2017 but with more information.) Ticket prices and times with more details will be coming in the near future, so stay tuned for more details so you can sign up and join the society in learning about our Lehigh Township history!

Northampton Area Public Library Submitted by Veronica Laroche

Another lively Summer Reading season is coming to a close at Northampton Area Public Library, but the activity is far from over. As the library celebrates a summer filled with reading, programs, prizes, and community participation, preparations are already underway for the Annual Online Auction & Basket Raffle—one of NAPL’s most important fundraisers of the year. This summer, 85 children, teens, and adults participated in NAPL’s Summer Reading program. Together, participants read 1,075 days while attending library programs, exploring new interests, and building reading into their summer

routines. The library congratulates this year’s prize winners, including 59 children, teens, and adults. NAPL also extends its sincere appreciation to the PPL Foundation, whose generous support helped make the program’s incentives, activities, and special events possible. Summer Reading is about more than keeping track of books, minutes, or days. It brings residents of all ages together, encourages children and teens to maintain their reading skills outside the classroom, and reminds adults that reading can remain a source of discovery, relaxation, and Continued on page 34

Off the Shelf connection throughout life. The enthusiasm shown by participants and families once again demonstrated how strongly the greater Northampton community values its library. Here are a few dates to remember as Summer Reading concludes: August 8 is the last day to log your reading and turn in your reading log for NAPL$, and August 22 is the last day to turn in your NAPL$ for well-earned prizes! With summer’s end, NAPL is turning its attention toward Basket Social season. The library is now accepting donations for its Annual Autumn Online Auction & Basket Raffle. Local businesses, organizations, families, and individuals are invited to contribute themed baskets, merchandise, gift certificates, experiences, or monetary donations to create raffle packages. The online auction will open on September 27 and continue through October 3, giving supporters an opportunity to bid from home on a variety of donated items and experiences. The season will culminate in the in-person Basket Raffle on October 9 at 6:00 PM at the Northampton Banquet

& Event Center, 1601 Laubach Ave, Northampton, PA 18067. Proceeds from the Online Auction & Basket Raffle directly support library collections, programs, technology, outreach, and other services available to residents throughout the Northampton Area School District. This year’s fundraiser carries particular importance as NAPL responds to a $180,000 reduction in annual funding. While a single fundraiser cannot replace that entire loss, every donated item, auction bid, raffle ticket, and sponsorship helps protect the services the community relies upon. Strong community participation also demonstrates that residents value a responsive, accessible library where people can connect, discover, and grow. Donations will be accepted through October 3. Those interested in contributing, volunteering, or learning more may visit northamptonapl.org, call 610-262-7537, or contact info@northamptonapl. org. Summer Reading may be ending, but a new season of community participation is just beginning. NAPL invites everyone to celebrate a successful summer—and then help fill the baskets that will support the library throughout the year.

Eligible Veterans in need Urged to seek support Through the Veterans Temporary Assistance Program submitted by Joseph Butera

Veterans and their dependents can apply for up to $1,600 per year to cover unexpected financial hardships, such as utility bills, rent payments, and groceries. The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) offers financial assistance to veterans who are facing an unexpected financial hardship. The Veterans Temporary Assistance (VTA) program provides eligible Pennsylvania veterans and their surviving dependents with financial relief for necessities of life such as food, shelter, fuel and clothing. “No veteran should have to navigate financial hardship without support,” said Maj. Gen. John Pippy, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general and head of the DMVA. “The Veterans Temporary Assistance Program is designed to help eligible veterans and their families through challenging times. Providing this support is one way we can recognize and thank veterans for their service to our country.” Since the inception of the VTA, DMVA has awarded more than $8.6 million to assist over 9,650 service members, veterans and their families with emergent financial needs. Eligible veterans or their survivors can qualify for an amount not to exceed $1,600 in a 12-month period. To be eligible, a veteran must have served a period of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and received a discharge under conditions other than dishonorable. PPL Electric Utilities is helping customers save energy and money by offering free pickup and monetary rebates for qualifying old appliances, along with additional incentives for eligible energy-efficient replacements. Customers can receive $35 for recycling a qualifying refrigerator or freezer and may be eligible for up to $75 toward a qualifying ENERGY STAR-certified replacement. Removing older, inefficient appliances can also help reduce ongoing electricity use while freeing up space and ensuring the equipment is recycled responsibly. Thomas Jefferson University to establish Regional medical College campus in Lehigh Valley submitted by Ashley Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson University has announced plans to establish a four-year regional campus of Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, further expanding access to medical education and strengthening the healthcare workforce across the Lehigh Valley. Located at One Center Square in downtown Allentown, the campus will include more than 54,000 square feet of newly constructed medical education space. Students will complete the same rigorous JeffMD curriculum offered at SKMC’s Philadelphia campus, including identical learning objectives, assessment standards and graduation requirements. Clinical training will be conducted at Jefferson Health – Lehigh Valley Region hospitals and outpatient locations. “This new campus reflects our ongoing focus to expand access to exceptional academic and clinical training, while making a lasting investment in the future of healthcare in the Lehigh Valley,” said Chief Executive Officer Joseph G. Cacchione. “We are committed to building a stronger regional physician

College. The new campus marks the latest milestone in Thomas Jefferson University’s academic expansion and growth. In June 2026, SKMC was selected by Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer to establish the state’s first four-year medical school. “With the expansion of Sidney Kimmel Medical College into the Lehigh Valley and Delaware, and the continued growth of our academic and clinical programs, this is a time of tremendous opportunity,” said Susan C. Aldridge, president, Thomas Jefferson University. “These initiatives reflect our commitment to address critical workforce needs while building sustainable academic pathways for future healthcare professionals.” SKMC’s Lehigh Valley campus will leverage the legacy of the SELECT program, a partnership between Lehigh Valley Health Network and the University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine, whose final cohort will graduate in 2027. The program’s critical medical education infrastructure and faculty expertise will transition to support the new campus. “When Jefferson and Lehigh Valley Health Network joined together nearly two years ago, we shared a commitment to forge new paths for academic and clinical expansion,” said Chief Operating Officer Brian A. Local Girl Scout, Delia Winas, Receives a Gold Award by "Crocheting a Better World" submitted by Naomi Winch

Allentown Central Catholic graduate Delia founded a high school crochet club, supplying handmade comfort items to local shelters and hospitals. Delia, a recent graduate of Allentown Central Catholic High School and a dedicated Girl Scout of 13 years, has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award— the highest and most prestigious achievement in Girl Scouting. Her initiative, titled "Crocheting A Better World," successfully tackled community comfort needs while establishing a sustainable creative outlet for students. Recognizing a dual opportunity to teach a valuable life skill and give back to those in need, Delia founded a crochet club at her high school. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || August 6, 2026

medical school and pursue a career in infectious disease or developmental pediatrics. About the Girl Scout Gold Award The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, available exclusively to Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts. It recognizes individuals who demonstrate extraordinary leadership by tackling a community issue with a sustainable, measurable solution.

Third Annual Scrapple Eating Contest Returns to Allentown Fair submitted by Jessica Ciecwisz/Staci Horvath

The club welcomed all students, regardless of their initial skill level, with Delia personally teaching beginners how to knit and crochet. Under her leadership, the club members crafted a wide variety of essential items for local organizations: • Scarves for a local homeless shelter, which were personally distributed to community members at the school’s food pantry. • Baby blankets for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). • Chemo caps for patients undergoing treatment at Lehigh Valley Hospital. • Tiny octopi to comfort young patients at Reilly Children’s Hospital. Delia personally managed the logistics and distribution of all crafted items to their respective locations. Demonstrating the project's long-term sustainability—a core requirement of the Gold Award—the crochet club continues to actively meet and create items at the high school even after her graduation. Delia’s journey in Girl Scouting spans over a decade, including seven years in traditional troops and her final six years as a Juliette (Independent Registered Girl). Her extensive list of Scouting accolades includes the Bronze and Silver Awards, the Trifecta Award, serving as a GSEP Girl Delegate, and participating as a Take The Lead Chorus member, Emcee, and Girl Coordinator. A member of the Allentown Central Catholic Class of 2025 and a designated Principal’s Scholar, Delia is poised for a bright future. She will be attending Dickinson College to major in Biochemistry, with long-term aspirations to attend August 6, 2026 || townandcountrygazette.com
