Slatington Library’s New Plaque The Slatington Public Library is pleased to accept an additional Louise Hallman Memorial Plaque, because the original one is filled with names. The final name on the original plaque was in memory of Russell Hallman. Russell was Louise’s son, and he owned and operated Hallman’s Service Station for decades. He also was a member of the Slatington Borough Council at the time of his passing.

The Hallman family wanted to honor their beloved mother while also helping the library. Names of honorees are entered onto the plaque after a donation of $1,000 to the library is made in their name. This is a wonderful way to honor a friend or loved one while supporting the library’s mission of literacy and service to the Northern Lehigh Community.

The new companion plaque was donated by Peter Papay, owner of Penn Big Bed Slate Company, a friend of Russell Hallman Jr. The floral painting on the plaque was done by Cadence Rehrig, Louise’s great granddaughter. Clifford and Connie Rehrig Continued on page 4

On August 30th an energetic group of 18 volunteers gathered at the Veterans Memorial to assist the Borough of Slatington by pulling weeds and beautifying the landscape. This group consisted of 11 Interact Club students, 5 Rotary Club members and 2 members of the Veterans Memorial Committee.

The mission of the day was to dig out the weedinfested flower beds, install a professional grade weed barrier, and fill the beds with ¾ inch red stone provided by the borough for this project. This was no simple task and it required a lot of manual labor.

The tools used for this project were wheel barrows, shovels, pitchforks, rakes, pick ax, buckets and a assorted variety of weed pullers. After removing a large amount of ground from the beds, Richard Fogelman took charge of properly installing the weed barrier with the red stone to prevent weeds from growing in this area. A donation from the Slatington Rotary Club paid for the new flower pots at the entrance and the weed barrier material.

Flowers in the new pots were donated by Robert and Chieko Churetta. In addition to sprucing up the Veterans Memorial, the group also pulled weeds in all four flower beds and around the gazebo in the Memorial Park. These dedicated volunteers donated five hours each on this project, which amounted to over 60 hours of labor. Everyone did whatever task they were assigned, never complained, and had a fun time completing this project. This is another example of people giving of their time, talents, and money to make our community a better place in which to live.

This August, Northampton Community College (NCC) received a $163,200 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to provide free Class A truck driving training to 40 current or former members of the United States Armed Forces, their spouses and adult children. NCC will recruit qualified students, provide them with superior safety-focused training, support them through successful program completion, and provide placement services to assist them in becoming employed in the transportation industry.

“Students coming out of the CDL Class A program will be highly employable in a high demand, high priority occupation. Veterans are particularly successful in our CDL Class A Truck Driving program and get jobs at local companies such as FT Silfies, Lily Transportation, XPO Logistics, Heller Gas, Pocono Pro Foods, and more, along with regional and national companies,” Tracey Johnson, NCC grants director, says.

FMCSA awarded nearly $80 million in grants to states and educational institutions to enhance commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety. NCC was one of 20 educational institutions to receive this Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) grant. NCC’s grant will help fill a regional shortage of skilled, licensed professional truck drivers and qualified programs that provide adequate operator safety training to meet the region’s growing transportation industry’s employment needs.

Just a few days after this issue of the Gazette hits the stands, we will move into the fall season. By the time our next issue comes out the autumn leaves will be changing colors overhead and showing up underfoot. It’s my favorite time of year.

Great Beauty The autumn is a time of great beauty that many of us will capture in photographs. I know I will. If you’ve been reading the last few issues closely, you know we’ve been promoting our “Autumn Leaves” photo contest and we’ve received a good number of entries. In our next issue that comes out on October 1st, the winning photograph will be unveiled – possibly on the cover.

Warming the Home The fall season is also about warming up the home. One thing that does that really nicely is the smell of freshly baked apples - ‘tis the season! So to help you have a great apple outing before it gets too cold, you will find some apple picking tips in this issue, as well as a listing of several “pick-your-own” orchards that are pretty nearby. We have also included a real simple apple recipe that you can pull together in a half hour, and if you wish, it’s suitable to be done with the happy help of your youngest.

Fall Crafting For many, the autumn is a special time for crafting – and we have you covered. Not only will you find some great fall decorating ideas you can create for your home, but we also assembled a short list of super easy fall craft projects to help you keep your kids entertained and creative.

Find an Orchard The first step is to find a pick-your-own orchard nearby. Bring the Kids Get the kids off their phones and out into the crisp autumn air with an apple-picking excursion.

Work from the Outside In For apples that are ready to eat (or dunk in caramel), pick from the outside of the tree. Apples on the outer branches ripen first, so work your way

Pick, Don’t Shake To properly pick an apple, roll the apple upward off the branch and give a little twist. You’ll know the apple is ripe if the stem is easily removed from the spur of the branch. Don’t pull the apple straight away from the tree, and never shake the branches.

Even a gentle shake can cause a heap of apples to fall to the ground. Without a net, this can give the fruit major bruises.

Avoid Bruising Whether you opt for the orchard’s plastic bags, a reusable tote, or a wooden basket be sure to store and stow your apples with care. Gently place them in your carrying container to avoid bruising. Bruised apples rot faster and will cause the other apples to rot as well.

Apple Storage At home, if you store your apples correctly, you can extend their shelf life. For apples that will be eaten right away, keep them in a bowl on the counter for a few days. Otherwise, store them in the refrigerator, preferably in their own crisper drawer. Apples produce ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that causes other fruits to ripen faster. So it’s best to keep them separate.

Four of the following orchards are true “pickyour-own” orchards. The fifth offers wagon rides into the orchard where each rider may do a very limited apple picking. In all cases, you should call ahead to confirm the orchard and orchard-activity hours. At the same time you can generally also confirm the apple type, and in one case, the other fruits that will be available for picking at the time of your visit.

Brace’s Orchard First up, we have Brace’s Orchard (444 Brace Road, Dallas, PA; 570-333-4236). Brace’s is the orchard on this list that is not the full-blown “pick-your-own.”

But what Brace’s does offer is a great family outing.

At Brace’s you can take a wagon ride into the orchard where each passenger gets to pick an apple (a single apple) right off the tree. That said depending on the timing of your visit and the exact apple types that will be ready for picking when you’re there, sometimes everyone on the wagon does get the opportunity to pick a full bag.

Dries Orchards According to Dries Orchards manager John Bzdil,

Dries Orchards (1724 Dornsife Mountain Road, Sunbury, PA; 570-286-6723) is definitely a pick-yourown. The orchard is already up and running with its pick-your-own activities that will run through late October, or maybe even early November.

Emerald Cider Mill Carl Fritchey at Emerald Cider Mill (3571 East Grant Street, Slatington, PA; 610-767-8304) says that in addition to apples, they will have pick-your-own pears, grapes, pumpkins and sunflowers! This sounds like a great place to visit in the next few weeks for your personal pick-your-own adventure.

Graver’s Orchards At Graver’s Orchards (1600 Owl Creek Road, Lehighton, PA; 610-377-0769), the picking starts in mid-September – just about the same time as you get your hands on this issue. Be sure and call ahead to determine the orchard hours and the apple varieties available.

According to the Taste of Home Test Kitchen, these little bites are fun for kids to make.You simply wrap strips of pastry around apple wedges, shake on some cinnamon-sugar, bake and watch them disappear! Prep time is 20 minutes, bake time 15 minutes, and when you’re done you’ll have 16 little bite-sized “apple pies.”

Ingredients: • 1/2 cup sugar • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 2 sheets refrigerated pie crust • 3 tablespoons butter, melted, divided • 2 medium tart apples • Caramel sauce, optional Directions: • Preheat oven to 425°. In a small bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon; reserve 1 tablespoon. On a lightly floured surface, unroll pie crusts; roll and trim each to an 8-in. square. Brush with 2 tablespoons butter;

sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture. Cut each square into eight 1-in. strips.

• Cut each apple into 8 wedges; wrap 1 strip of pastry around each wedge, placing sugared side of pastry against the apple.

• Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush tops with remaining butter; sprinkle with reserved sugar mixture. Bake 13-15 minutes or until pastry is golden brown. Serve warm, with caramel sauce if desired.

patching of small areas, to overseeding and complete lawn renovation.

You can’t minimize the amount of effort involved in lawn renovation, including the need for soil amendments or the array of equipment required, including rakes, a spreader, a lawn roller and a wheelbarrow. All the effort however, does provide a great sense of satisfaction when you turn a weed patch into an attractive lawn.

Start with the Weeds Before seeding, you have to deal with the weeds.

In small areas you may be able to remove them with a metal rake. A dethatching rake is well-suited to this task. On larger areas, this can be tackled with rented equipment, typically a rototiller.

Lawn renovation gives you an opportunity to fix dips in the lawn and spread a layer of compost or other organic matter that will improve the soil vitality. Then, after laying the seed, you should firm it with a roller or, in small areas, by tamping with the back of a shovel or hoe. A light blanket of straw (not hay) will help discourage bird feeding and retain moisture.

Overseeding If you don’t want to tackle a full renovation, spreading seed over an existing lawn, called overseeding, is a good way to thicken a declining lawn and also introduce new, better varieties of tall fescues, grasses bred for resilience and disease tolerance. Spreading seed without adequate soil preparation is a waste of effort however because seeds need good contact with soil to germinate and grow.

In smaller lawns, this can be done by raking out the thatch and incorporating compost or other soil amendments into the soil surface. On larger areas, rented equipment in the form of a power rake and a machine called a slit seeder will work.

Slopes Steep slopes will need anchoring until the grass gets established to prevent soil erosion. This can be done with jute cloth or other erosion-control matting, pinned to the area after soil preparation and seeding. The grass blades will grow through the loose weave, and matting made of organic materials will rot away in time.

Watering Established lawns need an occasional soaking when dry to encourage deep root growth. But newly seeded lawns require a light watering twice a day.

You may reduce the frequency of watering as the lawn gets established. If watering is impractical, it is better not to irrigate at all and let rainfall and dew dictate the timing of germination and growth.

Follow up The new grass should be cut when the seedlings grow a few inches. This is also a good way to keep leaf litter off the lawn. But do your seedlings a favor and replace or sharpen the mower blade first, so the tender seedlings are cut cleanly with minimal trauma or uprooting.

Autumn home maintenance projects can help you prepare for winter weather and might help prevent some surprise repairs during an inconvenient time of year. Use this checklist to make sure your home is ready for the deep freeze, layers of ice and drifts of snow.

Heating System Your HVAC is central to keeping your home warm during the winter. These simple furnace tips can help you face the challenges of winter more easily: • Change the air filter in your furnace once a month.

• Call an HVAC contractor to give the system a tune up.

• Use a programmable thermostat to lower your energy costs.

• Clear your heating ducts and vents of anything that may have gotten into them over the summer.

Other related areas: • Check windows for leaks.

• Purchase a plastic sealing kit and place the plastic around windows so heat can’t escape.

• Check the weather stripping on your door.

Chimney Sweeping Most chimney sweeps recommend an annual sweeping. If you’ll be using the fireplace or woodstove often, call a chimney sweep for an inspection. Older, seasoned wood is best for fires, as it burns cleaner and longer.

Home Fire Safety Check fire extinguishers and replace if necessary and change smoke detector batteries. Also create and review your home fire evacuation plan with your entire family.

Gutters and Downspouts Inspect and clean your gutters. Clogged gutters cause water to spill over them and can cause foundation damage or flooding in your basement.

Downspouts should be kept clean and positioned to direct water away from the foundation and walkways.

Yard Maintenance Rake or blow autumn leaves into piles and put them at the curb according to your town’s yard waste requirements. Don’t burn leaves before checking local ordinances.

If any shingles are curling, buckling or cracking, replace them. If there is extensive damage, you might consider re-roofing with impact resistant shingles. Also check the flashing around skylights, pipes and chimneys to prevent snow and ice from creeping in.

Kutztown University's Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology programs have been accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public, as well as being well prepared for graduate study.

The process of achieving first-time accreditation requires a cooperative effort on the part of all members of a department as well as effective preparation to assure a successful on-campus visit

by ABET representatives. KU now joins the body of ABET accredited higher education entities that provide their constituents an iron-clad assurance of the veracity of the degrees they offer.

"ABET accreditation provides prospective students confidence in the quality of these two undergraduate programs offered by the department," said Lisa Frye, department chair. "The accreditation was achieved through the dedication and hard work of all members of the department, which they bring to their jobs every day in helping students be successful in their courses and programs of study."

Mako returns from Deployment to Middle East submitted by TRACY POLOVICK

Rep. Zach Mako (R-Lehigh/Northampton), a combat veteran and U.S. Army helicopter pilot in the Pennsylvania National Guard, has officially returned from deployment to the Middle East and has resumed his legislative duties full time.

Mako, attached to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 104th Aviation Regiment, Fort Indiantown Gap, which traces its history to Battle of the Bulge, received orders last year to support Operation Freedom’s Sentinel (OFS) and joined more than 50

“When I was deployed last fall, I don’t think anyone could have imagined that a virus would spread worldwide and cause such change in the world,” Mako said. “I’m pleased to be back on American soil and appreciate all the support from my family, friends and neighbors. Thank you to my staff who assisted constituents with a variety of state-related issues including unemployment problems. I’m ready to get to work to help Pennsylvanians recover from this pandemic.”

Mako enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard in January 2008 and has been a Chinook pilot since July 2011. He was deployed to Afghanistan in December 2012 for nine months as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2016, he was selected to be an adviser to Estonia’s top military officials. In 2017, he completed elite training as an Aviation Mission Survivability Officer (AMSO).
