September covers two topics that can be difficult to discuss: business and finance. When the economy is thriving, it’s wonderful. When it’s not, tensions can be at an all-time high. But just as investment professionals will tell you: it’s not all gloom and doom.

“The uniqueness of this shop is the people,” she says. “The customers enjoy our selection, and we enjoy the customers.”

A History of Fun Melissa says the Port Clinton Peanut Shop dates back to the 1800s. It has always been a penny candy store, but back then the owners kept it as a multi-purpose country store, selling hardware and local amenities as well. In the 1960s, a woman named Grace Sunday lived in the building and managed the shop. She began to focus the goods more on candy, nuts and other local specialty candy and food items. In 1998, Grace sold the the store to Romeo D’Aurizio, a peanut wholesaler who began selling to her back in 1975. Melissa started selling candy and nuts with Romeo in 1985.

The shop is always open, closing only on Easter and Christmas. Hours are seasonal and listed online at portclintonpeanutshop.com and on Facebook @portclintonpeanut.

According to Melissa, this is one of the main attractions of the Port Clinton Peanut Shop: the variety of product lines available.

FUN FACTS

favorites are the caramel corn, homemade potato candy, peanut brittle, gourmet chocolate pretzels and, of course, their freshly roasted peanuts, available in four different temperature varieties (light, medium, brown and extra brown) and servedExpectwarm.toleave happy, Melissa says. Often customers will be reminded of days passed when a simple piece of candy triggers memories and stories.

Family Traditions. For 60+ years, generations of families have made visiting the Port Clinton Peanut Shop a tradition in their families.

There is an abundance of novelty candies and vintage treats, such as Beeman’s gum, Broadway Rolls, Pop Rocks, candy cigarettes, Washington Twin Cherries, Mary Janes and Necco Wafers, to name just a few. There are also gourmet chocolates, Kopper’s panned chocolate, nut mixes, gourmet nuts and seasonal sweets. And you can’t miss the large collection of gummies: jelly and juju candies and a large collection of licorice from around theInworld.addition to retailing a large variety of confectioners’ candies, Melissa says they also make their own fudge, potato candy and dipped favorites, such as chocolate caramel peanuts and cashews, bacon, almond bark, peanut rolls and a few others. Is your mouth wateringCustomeryet?

T ake a drive to Port Clinton, a little borough nestled on the edge of Schuylkill County. As you enter the town, the smell of freshly roasted peanuts from the Port Clinton Peanut Shop will tickle your nose. Walk in to discover not just a variety of roasted nuts, but also a sweet tooth’s“Everyparadise.inchof the shop is covered with candy,” says the manager, Melissa Swenk.

“It is a labor of love,” she explains. Everything that she has learned about the business of dried fruits and nuts and candies has been through the ever-changing years of managing the businesses and networking with other established candy retailers.

A Taste for Nostalgia Enter the tiny storefront, and you’ll delight in the floor-to-ceiling confectionaries. It may be more candy than you can ever imagine.

What is your favorite part about ReadingFilmFEST? I love the films, the art of filmmaking, the local community coming together; I love everything about it. It allows us to showcase the best of Reading and our culture.

BY CHRISTINA J. STEFFY | PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS Cammie Harris didn’t set out to work in the arts, but her previous careers in project management and the restaurant business allowed her to work with community arts events. She discovered a passion for working with community arts organizations and changed her career to pursue this passion. How did you get involved with ReadingFilmFEST? When I moved to the area in 2015, I started working with the WCR Center for the Arts in Reading. I then began working with ReadingFilmFEST. I’ve been with ReadingFilmFest for four years now, and my goal is to grow film production in the city. Why is Reading an attractive filming location? Since the COVID-19 pandemic, big cities that have traditionally supported independent (indie) filmmakers are facing production backlogs and limited resources, and priority is being given to big studios. Reading offers access to a variety of locations, a New-York based film studio, and a close community of business owners who can easily be reached and are eager to accommodate indie filmmakers.

10 SEPTEMBER 2022 | berkscountyliving.com AROUND TOWN IN THE LIMELIGHT

How do you relax and have fun? Work and my children keep me busy, but I enjoy reading, going for walks and going to New Jersey to visit family and go to the shore.

IN THE LIMELIGHT WITH Cammie Harris Executive Director of ReadingFilmFEST

ReadingFilmFEST is now in its eighth season. What can festival attendees look forward to this year? The festival is a four-day event. It will kick off Thursday, Oct. 27 with an international student film festival and a local student film screening. We will also host LUNAFEST, which features films made by and about women. On Friday, we have our opening gala at WCR and then film screenings at GoggleWorks and the Reading IMAX through Sunday. The event ends with our reception and awards ceremony on Sunday. Also, since the festival falls on Halloween weekend, we will have a live showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Finally, we’re partnering with local organizations to have smaller pop-up events.

How are films chosen for the festival? The process starts Feb. 1 when we begin accepting submissions from all over the world in a variety of film categories. Submissions close at the beginning of July. Each film is reviewed and rated by three community jurors who are local film lovers or community leaders. Films that are chosen for the festival are then reviewed for awards by a professional panel of judges. We also have a viewer’s choice award given to a film chosen by festival attendees.

LEARN MORE. International talent. ReadingFilmFEST has featured filmmakers from all over the world, including Portugal, Great Britain, South America and Australia. Films by women, for women. LUNAFEST premiered in 2001 as the world’s first all-women traveling film festival.

Why are independent film festivals like ReadingFilmFEST important? Indie filmmakers need an audience. In order to get their work out to audiences, they have to submit to film festivals. Film distributors attend festivals to offer filmmakers deals to distribute movies to larger audiences. ReadingFilmFEST has connections with film distributors.

HAVE A DRINK WITH Demitri Aziphat

Demitri Aziphat is General Manager at Paradise by the Slice. He started at the Wernersville spot as a bartender about 2.5 years ago, just as COVID-19 began to spread. Aziphat has been bartending for 10 years, and has worked in the restaurant industry for about 15 years. He got his start as a Busser/Dishwasher at ViVA Bistro & Tapas Lounge, later gaining experience in multiple departments. Says Aziphat, “Since I’ve become a part of the Paradise family and grew into a management role, my aspiration of opening my own business is becoming progressively viable.”

PHOTOS BY TANIA COLAMARINO, AMA PHOTOGRAPHY What’s special about this featured drink? The taste profile is dominated by the Ginger Beer which amplifies the spice of the bourbon itself and gives a swift kick to the palate while clearing the sinuses, too. The copper mug in which it’s served also makes the cocktail more appealing, keeps the drink cold and enhances the flavor properties. For what occasion would you recommend this cocktail? As fall approaches and the leaves start to change, the Kentucky Mule becomes a great option for all to enjoy. It warms the soul. Sit back, relax and enjoy one by the fire with loved ones. Founded in 2011, The gulf coast soul group from Houston made its start locally and eventually broke out internationally with their debut EP, Make Some Room. By 2018, they went on to release their sophomore album, Everything Here, gaining them global recognition. 24 SEPTEMBER 2022 | berkscountyliving.com BUSINESSES THAT OPENED DURING COVID-19 BY JON FASSNACHT PHOTOS BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS

Starting a business can be incredibly stressful, even in the best of circumstances. Making the leap during a once-in-a-century global pandemic is another thing entirely. Yet many Americans found opportunity in adversity. Among them are four Berks County entrepreneurs who, whether through choice or necessity, used the COVID-19 pandemic to pivot into new careers.

berkscountyliving.com | SEPTEMBER 2022 25 TO BEE OR NOT TO BEE. THAT WASN’T MUCH OF A QUESTION FOR BRANDEN MOYER. IT WAS MORE OF A NEED. After returning from a yearslong stint in Florida working for The Walt Disney Company, the Governor Mifflin grad returned home to start a cleaning company using the knowledge and experience he gained housecleaning at the Happiest Place on Earth. The resultant company, Homecare Solutions, was going strong. And then the unthinkable happened. “It was May 17, 2020,” Moyer says. “I remember the day just like yesterday. I went from 19 employees down to two.”

“Bees were just categorized as the single most important living crea ture in the world,” he says. “They are the reason why we have fruits and vegetables. They’re the ones who pollinate 70 percent of the crops that we need to sustain ourselves.”

“My all-time goal is to buy a big property, buy one of those trains you see at Knoebels, and tour people around the property explaining the bees,” he says. “And then at the end, just like Disney, you’ll exit through a gift shop.”

It’s nothing to sneeze at –literally. Local honey can also help alleviate“Withinallergies.20to30 miles of where you live, that is the honey you ought to eat,” he says. “Anything outside of that, the types of pollen really aren’t affecting you. They’re different profiles. You want to make sure you consume the right profile so you can build up a tolerance.”

A year earlier, Moyer shadowed a friend who was a small-time beekeeper and fell in love with the profession. Once it became apparent that the COVID shutdown was going to last longer than two weeks, he buzzed into action.

“Our goal is to make downtown Reading the bee capital of Pennsyl vania,” says Moyer, who swears by the efficacy of apitherapy, or beevenom therapy, after an accidental sting helped him regain feeling in his thigh for the first time in a decade. He also published The Adven tures of Uncle B and Ruby Catching a Swarm, the first in a planned series of children’s books that aim to teach the youth about the benefits of using honey in place of sugar and about the importance of its producers.

Moyer offers tours at his Kenhorst property and recently launched the master class “Beekeeping for Begin ners,” providing a more detailed instructional view of raising bees, allowing attendees the opportunity to go inside the hive.

“We were shut down for four months, and that gave me ample time to use the money the govern ment was giving us to invest in something that could possibly pro duce another income,” says Moyer, 33. “And beekeeping was that.”

Uncle B’s Honey Company is based in Kenhorst, where the business manages over a dozen hives and where Moyer serves on borough council. Its product can also be found at the Shillington Farmers Market and at the Dou bleTree by Hilton hotel in down townAndReading.Moyerhas grand plans to take his initiative countywide with the help of Pollinating Penn. The nonprofit contracts Moyer to help take care of its hives and provide tours of the colonies on the roof of the DoubleTree.

UNCLE B’S HONEY COMPANY

Moyer remains involved with Homecare Solutions, but he hopes to ramp up that business to the point where it’s self-sufficient so he can sell it or have other people run it for him. Then he can devote all of his time to the bees’ needs.

“It’s completely case-by-case; that’s the beauty of it,” Williams says. “We are a small company who listens to our customers’ needs, working with them to figure out a plan specifically tailored for them.”

SOCIAL CLOVER MARKETING Visit socialclovermarketing.com.

The growth in Social Clover allowed Williams to sell Cairn Collective. Its new owner will continue to partner with a global nonprofit, planting a tree for every item sold.

NOT ONLY WAS SOCIAL CLOVER MARKETING STARTED DURING THE PANDEMIC, IT WAS STARTED BECAUSE OF IT.

26 SEPTEMBER 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

Though the company is based in Sinking Spring, its employees spend much of their time out of the office traveling to clients’ sites for photo shoots, one-on-one consultations and whatever else they need.

“The pandemic was really a silver lining for us because we had this great opportunity to do what we already knew how to do,” says Williams, 41. “A lot of business owners multitask. This allows them to say, ‘Okay, you can handle this part, and I can focus on higher-level and more important items and know that this was taken care of.’ Basically, we become an extension of the team, helping them get their messaging out and achieve growth through creative marketing efforts. We’re able to offer a streamlined process that frees up a ton of their time that they didn’t even realize they were missing.” Those efforts include advertising, social media, marketing strategy and search-engine optimization.

The four-leaf clover is a fitting logo as Social Clover has had plenty of good luck since launching in May 2020.

So, while her old business continues to grow trees, Williams hopes her new one will continue to grow in size.

“Right now we have a really, really good group of clients,” she says. “My goal would be to be able to have a full-time staff of anywhere from three to five employees within the next five years.”

“We have grown exponentially within two years,” Williams says. “I was able to onboard a great employee, Samihah Ali. I had her as an intern, and she was just fantastic, so I was able to offer her a position with the company. She’s basically my right-hand girl and brings fresh ideas to the table. We definitely have plans for growth, but it’s just the two of us now.”

Longtime marketer Tricia Williams noticed that COVID dramatically altered the way people did business. With in-person interaction eliminated seemingly overnight, businesses realized they needed a new strategy to reach customers in the online world. Williams gained plenty of experience in that arena through her first business adventure, Cairn Collective. Founded in 2017, the eCommerce and retail business sold jewelry and apparel, mainly through the use of social media, making her well-positioned to help businesses adapt to the new normal.

73 CHARCUTERIE

“So, I went online and looked them up and literally that same night created a Facebook page and ran with it,” Lebo says. “It’s completely taken off.”

“People are a lot more germ-conscious now,” says Lebo, who operates the business alone, with occasional help from her husband and daughter. “So, we introduced charcuterie cups and boxes so everything’s already individually portioned. If someone’s not comfortable having that shareable aspect of it, they can have their own portion without sharing germs.”

Interested parties can order everything through the Exeter Township-based company’s website, 73charcuterieco.com. Lebo says she can accommodate most dietary restrictions.

“There is a lot of thought that goes into a board and trying to hit everyone’s different tastes,” says Lebo, 40. “You have to have an assortment of sweet and salty. You have to have different textures, something creamy, something that’s a little firmer. For your crackers, you want a dry, crispy cracker. Buttery ones absorb flavors and moisture. And you don’t want to make a board with a picture in your head, because it will never turn out the way you picture it –ever. Just let it flow as you’re making it.”

ERIKA LEBO WAS A PRO IN THE FOOD-SERVICE INDUSTRY. Her 20 years of experience included everything from working in restaurants to handling food distribution. But it wasn’t enough to protect the ServSafe-certified veteran from the ripple effects of the persistent pandemic, and she lost her job in January.

“Short term, I just want to continue to build our brand, because right now we’re known in Exeter and that’s about it,” she says. “And I’d also like to have an event space where people can come and have an upscale event with our grazing table as the center focus. Ultimately, the goal is to have a physical location where we can offer our charcuterie boards all the time. People can just kind of do a grab-and-go.”

While discussing what might come next, her husband suggested a charcuterie business since they were always making them for their parties.

73 Charcuterie – the number represents Lebo’s initials flipped upside down – offers ready-to-eat charcuterie in different sized boards along with grazing tables. Lebo also teaches classes at sites including Ridgewood Winery in Cumru Township, Exeter and Kutztown community libraries, Folino Estate in Kutztown and in clients’ homes.

So, what makes a good charcuterie board?

Starting a business offering products that require patrons to stand around a board sharing small servings of food is not ideal during a pandemic, to say the least. But Lebo found a solution by getting creative.

Earlier this year, Lebo received publicity most can only dream of when she and her partner won $5,000 on You Bet Your Life with Jay Leno, a reboot of the Groucho Marx game show. But despite that brief moment in the national spotlight, she’s content to grow 73 Charcuterie organically.

“There were plenty of situations in which somebody told us they chose us because our guys showed up wearing masks,” he Mochonsays.started with one truck, and he would often tag along to lug the junk. Today, he has five trucks and 11 employees.Andhewants those numbers to continue to grow. “We want to achieve $1 million in sales this year, which when you think about it for a business that started during COVID, our second full year is going to be our first milliondollar year,” he says. “Long-term we want to add more teams, more trucks, and hopefully in five years we have 15 trucks covering this area.”

THE JUNKLUGGERS OF BERKS, CHESTER & LANCASTER

FED UP WITH THE CORPORATE WORLD,

JAKUB MOCHON SOUGHT A CLEAN BREAK. INSTEAD, HE FOUND JUNK. In 2020, the Sinking Spring resident brought the Junkluggers franchise to Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties. The national company differs from its competition by focusing on sustainability, not merely hauling away unwanted items, but donating, repurposing or recycling them wherever possible.

Visit junkluggers.com.

“We live in this consumer society where everybody buys stuff and no one thinks what will happen with it,” Mochon says. “It’s amazing how often they are overwhelmed by it. I’m not even talking about a hoarder situation. I’m just talking about people who have stuff in the attic or the basement, now it needs to be gone, and they’re like, ‘What do I do with it?’”

28 SEPTEMBER 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

Owning a junk-removal business may not be as exciting as owning a Subway or a gym, Mochon says, but it’s necessary. And what gets him most excited about it is the process he calls the triple win: the company makes its customers happy by removing unwanted items from their houses, it makes donation centers happy by giving them quality items they otherwise wouldn’t have, and it makes donation-center shoppers happy by expanding the stores’ offerings. It even provides donation receipts to customers if something winds up with one of its partners.

“A good month for us is 100 to 150 appointments,” says Mochon, 47. “Some of our appointments are gigantic. We’ve had jobs where we removed like 20 trucks’ worth of stuff. But the majority of them are like: ‘Hey, I’m getting a new couch, and the old one has to go. Take it away.’”

All of the work is done by teams of two; Mochon likes to recruit young people who are seeking something interesting and different.

The Junkluggers of Berks, Chester & Lancaster officially opened on June 1, 2020. At the time, the franchise’s entire area of operation was considered at high risk for COVID spread. So, Mochon took precautions, making sure all of his workers had masks and protective equipment, and maintaining the same worker pairings to try to contain any potential outbreak. Not only did those measures help protect his team, it also landed him some customers.

HAVE A FINANCIAL PLAN?

Customers Bank has come a long way since its start as a small community bank in 2009. Today, we have nearly $20 billion in assets and sales teams delivering a variety of financial services across the USA. But we’ve never lost the personal touch. We still take time to understand your business and your banking needs. Reach out to Tim Romig, Managing Director & Market President of Pennsylvania and New Jersey to learn what his team can do for you! Get in touch

One of the biggest steps you can take toward feeling less anxiety around your finances is to have a well thought out financial plan.

customersbank.comLet’sPAMarketPresident@customersbank.comtoday!takeontomorrow.

“A certified financial planning professional can help you take into account your current situation, your goals, and provide recommendations and guidance on how those goals might be achieved,” says Tom Williams, CEO and Senior Wealth Advisor at local wealth management firm Domani Wealth. “It’s also important to work with someone who is a fiduciary –which means they are always required to act in your best interest. Not every financial advisor is.”

Whew. Deep breath. The world is still turning, and with the right supports, you can reduce financial stress.

Sixty-four percent of us report finan cial anxiety affects our mental health, according to data published through Empower.Wehave so many questions! How long will high inflation last? Will the supply chain ever straighten out? Will gas prices ever go down? Will housing prices calm? Will I be able to afford higher education for my children? Will I be able to retire when I want to?

A comprehensive financial plan can include recommendations on options to protect and manage what assets you have and what steps to consider taking to help you reach your financial goals. Everything from tax ramifications, risk levels and asset allocation may be included.

DO YOU

Having a plan that can be revisited and adjusted as needed when life or economic changes occur can help you feel peace of mind.

“Having someone in your corner who is regularly thinking about the details of helping you manage your finances can be an enormous stress reliever,” says Mike Dinan, Senior Wealth Advisor at Domani. “You know they are there to answer questions and are being proactive in assisting you with keeping your finances on track.”

• What credentials does their team have?

• Are the investments they recommend for clients proprietary, or do they choose from a wide variety of options?

ABOUT TAXES? Taxes are a must to consider when navigating a financial plan. It’s not just about a goal and a recommendation to get there, it’s about awareness of how taxes will affect you along the way.

“Periodically, your financial situation should be reviewed to best minimize your tax position,” Williams says. Regulations change consistently. Maximum allowable deductions are often updated annually by the IRS. These facets and more will have an impact on you directly, so partnering with someone who has experience, who keeps you informed about the planning recommendations and who can work with your tax preparer can help you feel less anxious.

WHATWHO

If you’re looking to meet with a financial planner, you should come prepared with questions to gain greater comfort before you move ahead with a relationship. You might ask:

• How do they get paid? Most fiduciarybased firms will be paid by fee, rather than commission.

• What is their investment philosophy – how do they approach investments for their clients?

• Do they work as a team or does each client only receive the expertise of one person? Being prepared can help you choose a great advisor that fits your needs moving forward.

• What services do they provide?

Knowing a professional is helping to keep a very close eye on your assets and your financial plan means you may worry less and sleep better, even when the headlines and your blood pressure are not the best. WHAT HOW

Are you relying on someone you trust to help you with a plan and your needs? What expertise do they have? How long have they been managing the technical aspects of someone’s finances, and have they worked with someone with your needs before?

DO PLAYINVESTMENTSAPART?

“A portfolio management team can keep and monitor your investments, rebalancing your portfolio to help improve results over the long term as markets shift,” Dinan says. “A great investment team strives to ensure your investment strategy is well coordinated with your financial plan.”

• How much do they communicate with clients?

ARE YOU RELYING ON?

SHOULD YOU ASK?

Personal and business banking, home, auto and investment needs and more are met with the latest technology, backed by stunning branches staffed by caring friends and neighbors known for award-winning service they call "younity."

RESTORING

According to their Berks ∙ Fire ∙ Water Restorations, Inc.’s website, bfwrestorations. com, “restoring lives” is one of their core beliefs. While businesses have unique needs, there are some common ways this company provides comfort and support during a loss.

As a preventative measure, Lavender suggests talking to her company to develop an emergency response plan before a disaster occurs. “When there is an established plan, all necessary resources and contacts will be notified.

Berks ∙ Fire ∙ Water Restoration harnesses technology to make planning even easier. “Because plans are so important to response

emergency, “insurance companies, agents, first responders or other associates may reach out” and connect the business owner to Berks ∙ Fire ∙ Water Restoration.

Emergency service providers, like us, are prepared to respond,” she says.

“In recognition of September being National Preparedness Month, we also provide free tools and consultation to businesses that need help in their preparedness initiatives,” says Lavender. “This is an extension of our care and support as planning and preparedness has a direct impact on an organization’s resiliency during the recovery process.”

and recovery efforts, we recently released the BFW Preparedness & Recovery App,” says Lavender. “We offer this as a free tool to develop, store and execute plans in the case of a loss. It also allows for us to be easily notified by the organization in the case of an emergency.”Whenemergencies happen, business owners may be surprised to find service providers seek them out. “It is not uncom mon that a variety of service providers will respond to losses by listening to scanners. It is important to be aware of this, mak ing sure your company’s response team is prepared to manage solicitations,” cautions Lavender. She notes that this is not her company’s procedure. She asserts, “Berks ∙ Fire ∙ Water Restorations does not deploy to a site unless we are invited to respond.”

MITIGATION RESTORATIONAND

Once the damage is assessed, the next step is restoration. “Depending on the type and extent of damage, most anything can potentially be restored,” notes Lavender. “We had the pleasure of even restoring an ATMLavender’smachine.”team works to restore impor tant items first, such as linens. “We have had a few occasions where the core business is hosting events. In addition to preparing the facility to maintain commitments that are days away, the linens and textiles were re stored with the greatest urgency so that com mitments could be honored.”

When Berks ∙ Fire ∙ Water Restorations is called, “the details of the process will vary greatly depending on the type of loss, extent of damage and the priorities of the organization,” says Lavender. “The common elements of mitigation are to reduce or eliminate further damage and/or disruption to the property, the organization and address any safety-related issues. For business operations, other considerations will include, but not be limited to, auxiliary locations, business interruption and employees, etc.”

To keep Sieker’s surgery center up and running, the Berks ∙ Fire ∙ Water Restoration added temporary barrier walls so patients could come in the following morning. After a week, the walls and ceiling were dried out. “They provided clear communication and expectations that made it easier for me to plan what we needed to work around the problem,” says Sieker. In addition to Berks ∙ Fire ∙ Water Restoration’s fast service, “the most impressive thing about the company was their accuracy in expectations,” he notes. “This allowed me to plan and make arrangements so that we didn’t have to close the facility. This was good for our business, employees and most importantly the patients that we serve.” AFTER AFTER

GETTING BACK TO BUSINESS WITH SPEED Time is of the essence during restoration. “One of the most important things to consider for any facility and its contents is that with the passage of time, the severity of damage will increase and/or restorability may decrease,” cautions Lavender. “The faster anything critical to the organization is handled, the better. Again, in preplanning for a response, identifying the most critical things, maintaining inventories and having plans in place in the case of an emergency service allows for optimal outcomes in the recovery process.”

BEFOREBEFORE

RESTORATION

“Computers and anything with electronics can be restored through an electronic restoration process. This is different than the repair of a defective unit or recovering data,” Lavender says. “The process will stop any deterioration from an exposure and remove any contaminates that could degrade the electronics.”Forhardcopies of important papers, “Even in the day and age of technology, there are still documents that are critical, required or of high value to an orga nization,” Lavender notes. “Processes like freeze dry ing and gamma radiation can be employed to restore them.” When planning for the unexpected, “organiza tions should deliberately address documents of this nature. This allows for the most effective and efficient document recovery.”

After a broken sprinkler pipe flooded his business, Jeff Sieker called on Berks ∙ Fire ∙ Water Restoration. “They immediately assessed the situation and began working quickly to start cleaning up the water,” says Sieker. He was impressed by the company’s clean-up equipment, including a special vacuum. “With only one pass, the carpet felt almost dry to the touch, and the amount of water it sucked out was incredible. Watching that, I felt reassured that they were going to be able to minimize the damage to the facility from the water.”

From start to finish, the length of the restoration process can vary. “The best approach is to execute an emergency response and recovery plan that allows the business to resume operations as quickly as possible,” advises Lavender. “A strategy to minimize down time will vary but may include anything from getting an auxiliary location up and running or moving a critical operation to an unaffected area or building. Many losses are not severe and can be handled with minimal or no impact to operations.”Whendeveloping a just-in-case plan, Lavender suggests thinking about “different scenarios and considering the probability of, and vulnerability to, the organization. When there is a keen focus on the continuity of the business, resuming operations is a possibility even when damage is being repaired.”

The two-story, 1,800-plus-square-foot, circa 1900 structure was designed to be the Shoe makersville train station. It was a stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad when passenger service between Philadelphia and Pottsville and be yond was a primary means of transportation into the first half of the 20th century. That service terminated in 1981 and the property was ultimately converted to a singlefamily, at times two-family, residence. Marianna and “Big Ed,” as he is best known, immediately saw the property’s potential. They also had a long-seated respect for its history.

It was six years ago that Ed and Marianna Burns decided to move their growing business, Burns Logistics Solutions, out of their rural Tilden Township home. The business required the hiring of new staff. The Burns wanted to stay close to home. As they mulled their move, they noticed a newly posted “for sale” sign at a familiar building just a five-minute drive away. It wasn’t long before that sign was removed and the property was theirs. And what a storied property it is. Though it had prior to 2016 been a private residence for some years, it was, for most of its existence, a hub of activity in its northern Berks borough.

The couple took on much of the renovation themselves, although they did work with a con tractor who shared their vision and were happy to accept some help from family when needed.

And, there’s a bit of irony or historic sym metry: Burns Logistics focuses transportation, specifically the effective shipment of goods.

“We build relationships with carriers and shippers so that we know who to bring together and when,” says Ed. “We connect the right carrier with the right shipper at the right time.”

Taking on History Moving into the old train station building and renovating it into a first-floor business space and second-floor apartment occupied the couple and their family and friends for more than four Locatedmonths.attheapex of Main and Fourth streets and Pennsylvania Avenue, the striking Craftsman-era building sits on a one-third acre“Welot.always thought this was an iconic building,” says Marianna. “We wanted to make the community proud of it again.”

There was the need to make the renovation ADA compliant, and there were some surprises along the way. They found an old hand-dug well under some floor boards. It was likely the source of drinking water for passengers when the train station was new. That, of course, needed to be permanently sealed. The old gutter system running along the roofline had seen its best days and needed to be replaced entirely. Interestingly, that gutter system is clearly visible on an early photo of the building that Marianna found on the Internet and purchased from a seller in Australia.

“Our first house had needed a lot of cosmetic work, so we sort of cut our teeth on that,” she says. “When it came to family, I sort of took the Tom Sawyer approach of: ‘Do you want to paint the fence?’”

“There was some molding missing, a stainedglass window had been removed, and the oak floors needed to be restored,” she says. A visit to the Centre Park Artifacts Bank in Reading solved some of the problems – one in particular was the acquisition of an unusually tallThedoor.couple also found a stained-glass window to replace the missing one; however, the window frame had to be retrofitted to accommodate it.

There was one artifact disappointment: the Burns learned a missing ticket window was being stored in a farmer’s barn. The hopes of re-acquiring that piece were dashed when they learned the barn had burned down.

Painting – interior and exterior – was key to the renovation. A buttery-hued cream dominated the interior walls calling to attention, along with some reddish-brown accents, the high ceilings of the first floor. The exterior color trio of golden rod, sage green trim and cranberry-red accents all complement the handsome brown-shingled roofline and pay homage to the Pennsylvania Railroad heritage.

While it looks official, Marianna says it was actually found in a catalog and affixed by the prior owner. Big Ed and Marianna created a more-or-less open concept work space but designed it with specific areas for staffers. They retained the prior owner’s kitchen area separated from the workspace by a short natural-wood beadboard wall to maintain the openThefeeling.furnishings and lighting serve as homages to the building’s heritage: there are large ornate wood desks and bookcases, leather chairs and sofas and school-house pendant lights. Comingling with these period tributes are a large-flat screen television, printers and computers that are the requisite components of a modern, high-tech business. “We really wanted our workplace not to be sterile or ‘officey’,” says Marianna. “We wanted it to be very comfortable inside with a seating area and that kitchen area so that we can all interact.”

Marianna credits the prior owner, a gardener, for establishing some beautiful plantings, including peonies and ornamental grasses. The Burns continued the landscaping all around the building, including the railroad track side that faces Pennsylvania Avenue and one of the largest private homes in the borough. That attractive residence is believed to have been built and occupied by one of the family members of Wolfe Dye & Bleach Works, which was founded in the borough. They created a small garden seating area with annuals adding colorful notes to the perennials facing the confluence of Main, Fourth, Pennsylvania and the railroad tracks. While the tracks are used sparingly by the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad, it is still a real treat to see the train passing by the historic old train station, Marianna says.

On the second floor, a beautiful 900-square-foot apartment was configured from an original, Marianna believes, originally serving as a rest stop for conductors and engineers. Bright and airy courtesy of windows on all sides, the apartment boasts a large living area and two bedrooms with restored hardwood floors. Some natural woodwork carries over the first floor along with narrow strips of exposed brick wall. There is a large kitchen with room for a good-sized table. The bathroom features a free-standing tub with ornate brass-and-ball clawfoot legs, a pedestal sink, tiled floor and original restored knotty pine paneled walls. In all the rooms, sloped and angled ceilings provide testimony to the gables comprising the roof.

Marianna’s advice for those taking on a res toration job as extensive as theirs is to have a project plan, to work hard and efficiently to make it a reality, and to work cooperatively with the community when the building has historic and personal meaning. Indeed, when the reno vation work was completed in the early autumn of 2016, the couple threw open the doors to the community for a “harvest party.”

At that point of the property, the couple have plans to place a clock, a design-sensitive reproduction of one that long stood there. They consider themselves lucky that some vintage lamp posts on the site have survived and continue to illuminate the building and re-paved parking area.

“I’d say cooperation is always the best thing,” she says. “The people in Shoemakers ville love this building and were very excited about the changes brought about, especially with the paint job. Our business is all about relationships; being a good caretaker of this building along these railroad tracks, being a good neighbor – it all matters.”

54 SEPTEMBER 2022 | berkscountyliving.com DINING OUT BY MARIAN FRANCES W OLBERS Coffee shops tend to start out small, intimately tied to owners who possess vision, talent and drive. As such, their personalities pour forth in uniquely tasty ways. Here’s a terrific trio! PourItOn! 3 COFFEE SHOPS AND CAFÉS

Ezekiel 47 A multicultural mecca café has landed in West Reading! Novelist Janice Rodriguez describes it as “a clean, bright, cheerful space with views of Fifth Avenue and friendly, attentive owners who serve tea and coffee to the sounds of a Christian Rock radio station. The stars here are the coffee and tea. My Gibraltar coffee was bright and acidic with a long-standing, creamy layer of foam. My husband’s Americano decaf, freshly ground, was bold and strong. We overheard a patron recommending the lattes to a newcomer and called them ‘delicious.’ The tea menu is interesting and — as promised on the café’s website — multicultural.”

Brakeman’s Café

“My wife and I ordered at the counter, where the accommodating apron-clad staff took our orders. We chose sandwiches, and when I asked for suggestions for a ‘coffeeish’ drink, the server suggested their Snickerdoodle latte. Delicious — just the right blend of espresso, milk and brown sugar with a cinnamon finish that didn’t overpower the coffee. The Noon crowd filled the café, and we chose an outdoor table near an ancient magnolia and were so pleased when we tasted what was brought to us. The foundation of the café’s exquisite sandwiches is detail and quality. They made everything with freshly prepared ingredients on a base of fresh-baked rolls from the Corropolese Bakery. My wife chose a tasty Green Goddess sandwich on a brioche roll loaded with turkey, fresh avocado and mixed baby greens. My Turkey Rachel sandwich was on a Kaiser, with thick layers of turkey covered with homemade coleslaw and generously sliced Swiss cheese, lavished with tasty Thousand Island dressing. The small side of pickled cucumber drizzled with a perfectly formulated balsamic reduction was a treat. I’ll be back!” 56 S. Washington St., Boyertown brakemanscafe.com484.415.7511

“We both always loved coffee,” says Chris, “and coffee formerly known as ‘gourmet coffee.’ Twelve years ago, I was living in Baltimore, where I first tried to roast coffee at home. I actually used a popcorn maker up on the roof,” he laughs. “So, I made my own coffee, and we would roast together on the weekends. People really loved the coffee. We decided to make it into a business in 2017.”

Tom and Traci O’Connor opened Brakeman’s Café opposite the Colebrookdale Railroad three years ago in a former carriage house and stables. “We thought it would be a small shop, but it took off, and we now have a beautiful outdoor seating patio,” recalls Traci. Opening at 7am, Brakeman’s wake-up java is a clear draw. “We source coffee beans from Twin Valley, and our number-one sellers are the lattes. We have 16 different lattes,” Traci says. Numerous teas and creatively concocted drinks, such as freshsqueezed lemonade in 10 different flavor varieties, are on the menu, along with their made-daily chicken salad on a sandwich or hydroponic greens. When writer Richard Weinstein first headed to Brakeman’s, he noted the atmosphere, where “railroad prints in a rustic interior surround the cozy indoor seating.” However, it was the excellent drinks and food that hooked him.

For outrageous coffee roasted by true connoisseurs, get thee to Kutztown! Owners Colleen and Chris Eugster have raised the coffee-taste bar high. Colleen laughs, “People tell us, ‘You’ve ruined me for other coffee!’ But a lot of credit goes to Chris. He has an excellent talent for grabbing the notes out of the beans. He chooses the beans well.”

Four Monkeys Coffee Roasters and Cafe

Today, buying organic coffee in small batches from families with small farms, this husband-and-wife team roast and brew onsite. They sell directly to customers, to farmers markets and CSAs (community-supported agriculture groups). Chris favors beans “grown high in the mountains,” adding, “we focus a lot on Central and South America.”

Timor, Ethiopia and other nations are also on his radar.

On a recent visit, poet Amber Kulaga loved her pour-over Howler Blend, pronouncing it unequivocally “De-li-cious!” She believes one reason for the tasty difference lies in their process: the fluid-bed roaster. According to Chris, “We get brighter notes out of the coffee.” 100 Constitution Blvd., Kutztown 484.819.0444 | fourmonkeyscoffee.com

Gigi Benique, who co-owns the café with husband Rene, says they use an Ethiopian drip but offer specialty coffees like Espresso Shot 1: “It’s Thaddeus Espresso, a blend of Colombia and Brazil flavors with notes of plum, cocoa and brown sugar. We also offer Turkish teas, waffles and paninis from different countries, with our bestseller being the Cuban,” says Gigi. “Number two is the Dominican.”

Rodriguez says, “The owners’ interpretation of the famous Uruguayan and Argentinian choripán (from chorizo, a red pork sausage, and pan bread) keeps the original sandwich’s garlicky, piquant chimichurri sauce but swaps the chorizo for a juicy chicken sausage and the baguette-style bread for a ciabatta club roll, which is flattened and toasted.”
