Local Author Pens Book Addressing Kids’ Food Allergies

When Megan Herr’s son was just six months old, her life changed within hours after he was diagnosed with extreme allergies to eggs, tree nuts, peas and dairy. One bite of the wrong food could seriously harm or kill her child, so she made it her mission to learn everything to keep him safe: from researching ingredients to how to give Epinephrine. To help spread awareness for children living with food allergies and to open dialogue between children, parents, caregivers and their peers, she wrote a book. Herr explains, “The concept I wanted for this book was for it to be fun, bright and engaging, but be equally educational.” Lucas takes his Food Allergies to Daycare explores a realworld setting that poses a challenge for young children with food allergies and explains the importance of washing hands after eating, of not sharing food, and why a child may have to sit at another table. Want to take a leisurely walk somewhere new? The Exeter Community Library StoryWalk® is a free, fun and educational outdoor activity where children and adults alike can see a story come to life as they stroll down the walking trail behind the library. The path is nestled in a wooded area and features a book.

Its pages are spread on posts throughout the path for visitors to read. The featured book changes quarterly. StoryWalk® is open during daylight hours every day, year-round. Everyone is welcome to visit; the trail is also wheelchair accessible. “I have seen on the StoryWalk® family friends meeting for a Saturday morning activity, couples walking their dog at the end of the day, a father teaching his little one how to ride a tricycle, an elderly gentleman getting in his daily exercise, teens needing a safe space to talk on a bench and school-aged kids swapping books at the Little Free Library, all while immersing themselves in nature and enjoying the story at the same time,” says librarian Laura C. t all started with a dream to open a small business. Malorie Waters decided it was time to leave her corporate job and pursue her vision. In 2019, this dream began to blossom more quickly than she’d ever imagined: while driving through the lively college town of Kutztown she passed by an empty building for rent. Malorie knew instantly that it was the perfect spot for her to sell crafts and antiques. Driven by passionate determination, she obtained the necessary permits within a mere 30 days and was on her way to realizing this new venture named Mayfield on Noble. She says humbly, “Mostly what happened was I just knew I wanted to do it and the opportunity came up immediately and I did it.”

Always feeling a deep connection to her hometown, Malorie named her store after the place that warms her heart.

The possibilities are endless at Mayfield. Be on the lookout for a wide diversity of items such as seasonal products, special art classes and fun events offered. For example, Mayfield features murder mystery dinners where everyone enjoys great food and all are active participants in the production. According to Malorie, “If you come, you are involved in the game.” In the summertime, be sure to drop in for shopping and wine slushies or grab a treat from one of the food trucks set up on weekends. Next door is Hazel’s Café, where you can relax with delicious food, tea, coffee or wine made by Berks County’s own Cork Dork.

AROUND TOWN IN THE LIMELIGHT I was hired, and I started in March 2020, two weeks before the pandemic caused disruptions and remote work.

What volunteer roles did you have with United Way? I volunteered with the Community Impact Office, the office I’m working for now. I reviewed applications for agency partners. I served on grants committees, and I served on the technology committee.

I attribute my ability to successfully onboard during the pandemic to being a volunteer in this department for so long because I was already familiar with the functions of my department.

What do you enjoy most about your role with United Way? In my role, I work with a team that identifies community needs, works with agency partners and oversees grants. The Ready.Set.READ! initiative is also part of my office. I enjoy working with people to improve the community. I also enjoy being able to provide the funds to make changes. As a funder, I believe we can truly make impactful change. It makes me happy to go to work every day knowing we’re fulfilling our mission to make Berks County better for everyone.

How can people get involved with the United Way? My office maintains the volunteer center, and we can help people identify an opportunity they’re interested in. Some examples of experiences we’ve connected people with in addition to Ready.

Set.READ! are mural paintings in the city, our annual Day of Caring with various community projects, and the Big Cheese where volunteers package food for Helping Harvest food bank.

Businesses can work with us on grant reviews, focus area panels, and they can even create a “wish list” that identifies their volunteer needs to help us connect them with volunteers.

When you have some downtime from all of the work you do for our community, how do you relax and have fun? I enjoy cooking and trying new recipes, working out and listening to audiobooks.

Ashley Chambers came to Reading from Western Pennsylvania in 2004 to attend Albright College. Upon graduation, she chose to make this community her home.

She’s spent most of her time since graduation working with the United Way. Since college, your jobs have focused on serving the community. Tell me about that experience and how it led you to your current role with the United Way. I began my career working for United Community Services in Reading. I eventually became their executive director, and in that role I was a non-voting board member of the United Way. I also volunteered for the United Way for about 10 years. I then worked as a children and youth services director for Congreso de Latinos Unidos in Philadelphia. When I saw the VP of community impact job for the United Way posted in December 2019, I applied.

LEARN MORE. Nurturing Young Readers. The United Way is expanding its Ready.Set.READ! program to early childcare centers in addition to schools to help encourage reading at an even younger age.

Special Programming for Family Businesses

The family-owned and operated business Pagoda Apparel has been a role model for the community. It has not only continued to operate as a family-owned business, but has also given back to the community through advocacy and donations.

Pagoda Apparel is a print shop located in downtown Reading. The business mostly prints and creates apparel for businesses, though it also makes various other customized items such as banners, home décor and accessories.

Pagoda Apparel was initially founded in 2012 by co-owner Dele Olaewe as a side gig. He had previous experience in the print industry and wanted to create some adult soccer shirts for his friends. Over the years, the family business steadily grew, even through the pandemic. For that reason, just a few years ago, Pagoda Apparel become a full-time commitment for Dele and his wife, Barbara Olaewe.

Being a small family-owned business brings many benefits and challenges. According to Barbara, one of the main advantages is “working together as partners for the same goal.”

On the flip side, a challenge that Barbara and Dele face is that they never get away from their business. As Barbara puts it, “You don’t get to disconnect when both family members are working the same business with the same goal.” In addition, one of the hardest things for a small, family-owned business is letting others know you exist. To attain greater success, the business needs to move past word-of-mouth referrals and to intentionally connect with the community.

Pagoda Apparel has demonstrated its community values by giving back.

For one, the company promotes Reading. “We like this city. We want people to know and love Reading,” says Barbara. This is reflected in their signature Pagoda logo and in their Reading souvenir line.

In addition, Pagoda Apparel has joined many philanthropic endeavors.

The business donates clothes with small manufacturing defects that can’t be sent to consumers for quality purposes. Some of the beneficiaries include the New Journey Community Outreach Center and the Olivet Boys & Girls Club of Reading & Berks County.

The business has also been grateful for the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance’s (GRCA) support and family-owned business programming over the years. GRCA has helped Pagoda Apparel by featuring the business in its Rebuild Berks campaign and also ordered shirts for the staff to wear at its annual picnic.

Barbara and Dele are regular attendees of the Berks Family Business Alliance (FBA) programming. FBA is a signature program of the GRCA. It serves family-owned and operated businesses of all sizes by providing diverse programming and numerous interactive opportunities. The goal of FBA is to help to lead these special, family-owned businesses to success. Mother’s Day THE HISTORY OF

While Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 8, this year, it is said that the day of tribute was founded on May 9, 1905, after Anna Reeves Jarvis lost her mother, and she looked to create a day to honor mothers as a group. Anna began her movement in West Virginia. The state prides itself for hosting the first official Mother’s Day celebration in 1908. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Jarvis’ idea, making Mother’s Day a national holiday to be celebrated the second Sunday in May. Today, Mother’s Day is a $25 billion holiday in the United States. It is the most popular day for buying flowers, second to the Christmas and Hanukkah seasons. The white carnation is regarded as the official Mother’s Day flower as Jarvis sent 500 of them to Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in her mother’s honor for that first Mother’s Day celebration in 1908.

Outdoor Space WHEN CYNTHIA LYNN notes that her Wyomissing abode is just a mile or so from her childhood home in the borough, you might think she’s not ventured far in life.

But, oh, how wrong you would be about this Wyomissing High School Class of ’69 grad.

Cynthia’s roots in Berks expanded exponentially over the decades. She raised her children on a farm in St. Alban’s, VT, near the Canadian border. Then, she spent years circumnavigating the globe in her apartment aboard “The World” cruise ship. Now she divides her time between homes in Wyomissing and Florida when she’s not in transit visiting her many far-flung friends.

For this outgoing and always-on-the-move woman, it might seem that spaces for quiet reflection and relaxation are an anathema to her peripatetic personality. But the opposite is true.

Cynthia’s key passions – travel and gardening – are not necessarily complementary in character, but they are complimentary to her character.

Despite the modest size of the lot, her Wyomissing residence is a study in how to group plantings into designated areas with more than a nod to nutrition and wellness, also primary forces in her life.

In Vermont, Cynthia’s 21 acres contained specific gardens dedicated and designed for meditation as well as areas planted with species to assist in upper respiratory and gastrointestinal healing. The homestead also included a labyrinth.

But raising and nurturing plants in far northern Vermont could be challenging.

“We were in the 3 and 4 zones, three or four miles from Canada, often with gale-force winds,” she says. Indeed, Vermont has five different zones for plant hardiness – classified as 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a and 5b. Generally, the lower the numbered zone, the briefer the growing season as the frozen soil takes longer to warm.

Contrast that with Pennsylvania with a zone in the 5b to 7a range. And then there’s southern Florida, where her residence in is a growing zone of 10b. There, she concentrates on container gardening, favoring varieties of basil, thyme, lavender and Phaedra that thrive in the subtropical climate. All told, understanding those zones and the plantings they can support has made Cynthia a seasoned gardener.

She left Vermont and re-established her life in Wyomissing at her mother’s residence in 2013. Three years later, Cynthia began her noble quest to transform the property into a one-of-a-kind garden compound.

BRINGING IN AN

Expert

Essential to the creation of the many garden areas was renowned local landscape design expert Bruce Dingeldein of West Reading.

Dingeldein has designed and created some notable public landscaping, including the median on Hancock Boulevard adjacent to — as well as — the private lot of Tom Masano Inc. on Lancaster Avenue in far southwest Reading, the side yardage of Gage Personnel in West Reading, and the frontage of In-Home Oxygen on Lancaster Avenue near the Route 10 intersection. For years, he provided landscaping services for the Boscov’s stores and for the residence of the late Albert Boscov.

Dingeldein undertook the assignment for Cynthia in 2016, creating the first garden a year later in the front of and to the west side of the house. In 2019, he completed designs for what had been the backyard as well as Cynthia’s treasured secret garden.

“And then he retired on me,” she laughs.

The natural designs, executed by Garden Keepers of Myerstown, became reality.

Dingeldein’s signature river birch trees are components without dominating the compositions. Also, reminders of her St. Alban’s gardens are incorporated.

“I tried to do what I did on 21 acres in Vermont in my postage stamp here, using every square inch of space,” she says.

She was determined that each area contain compatible plantings. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Cynthia, who is certified in therapeutic essential oils, was even more determined that the garden be one dedicated to health and healing. She says that her knowledge of the elements and their functions determine in which specific planting areas to spend time depending on how she’s feeling.

“During early COVID, I took it upon myself to fortify my space, inside and out, with as many medicinal plants as I could,” she says.

“For exercise, I could do a route around my property and escape any errant spike proteins by staying on site. My upper path is a chakra path with bulbs in their respective colors in March and April — red, orange, yellow — and pink and green at the bend.

“Roman chamomile blankets the property. It’s an herb known to relieve stress, anxiety and fear.

Planting it seemed appropriate for COVID. Plus, it’s a pretty May little daisy. I like it dried as tea.”

Intriguing curving graveled trails are defined by rock borders

While the sounds of birds and the presence of smaller creatures like rabbits and squirrels are part of the garden constituency, the presence of deer are quite another story.

Cynthia’s house is in a residential neighborhood, and the deer seem to feel right at home in established suburbia.

“Deer come through Wyomissing all the time,” she says. “Peppermint worked to keep them away in Vermont, but not here.”

The garden includes some electric wires embedded in the ground that serve as mild but unexpected deterrents. Most of the deer seem to reside in nearby Jack Rabbit Hill, she says.

“They rust naturally, and the veneer can be maintained,” Cynthia says. The raised containers also offer convenience and less stress on knee joints, she adds.

“The plants here all have protein,” she says. “My intent is to feed myself, and I pretty much did.”

What food she doesn’t grow, Cynthia prefers to buy at the Hershey Harvest on Kutztown Road in Laureldale.

“My mother and grandmother shopped there,” she says. Cynthia explains her customer loyalty is tied to the natural and organic quality of the meats and prepared foods. Among her favorite treats are the homemade opera fudge and ice cream.

The KIVA area was to be the setting for a fire pit. However, borough regulations regarding fire pits and placement distance from the house were not workable with the design and site.

“I called the fire chief, and it just couldn’t be approved,” she says. An interim solution was placing fake logs and lighting in the pit. The long-term solution – giving the fire pit to her daughter whose family recently purchased a new house on a two-plus-acre lot near Hartford, CT. “California bluebells line the path down to the KIVA (pretend fire pit area) that is ringed with lavender (Munstead, Hidecote and Provence varieties),” she says.

The whimsical metal sculptures that add to the gardens’ already blooming character were sourced from an artists’ studio in Boyertown that since closed its doors.

The firm, owned by an Amish family, also performs much of the maintenance for the gardens. Reuben Stoltzfus, the owner, originally worked for Dingeldein. Cynthia says Reuben and his wife, Martha, will occasionally garden barefoot in the summer months.

Reuben and his son Mark, then aged 12, also designed and constructed a panel of mirrors that float with the wind, as Cynthia poetically notes, and catch the colors of the azaleas when they are in full bloom.

Garden Keepers also installed an irrigation system that dramatically cuts down Cynthia’s time with the watering bucket and hose.

“I can get all the watering done in an hour,” she says.

Interestingly, despite her extensive global travels, she cites only one particular garden as being the most spectacular: The Bahai Gardens in Haifa, Israel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The terraced gardens in nine concentric circles are filled with flowers, small trees and sculptures, water fountains and pools. On the sides are wooded areas for wildlife and a barrier to urban noise.

Iranian architect Fariborz Sahba designed the gardens that comprise 200,000 square meters.

“There is nothing more inspiring,” she says.

Still, she says, it’s been her own personal inspirations and years of experience that have made her the gardening enthusiast she is today.

Cynthia encourages others to explore the benefits of home gardening, no matter what the size and/or scope of their efforts.

“I’d say plant what you like and keep it alive,” she says. “Once I bought a plant called a horsetail. There are challenges with that, and it took some work. Remember: If you buy it, you need to tend to it.”

ike so many charming Pennsylvania hotels that make Berks County a special destination for dining out, the Stonersville Hotel maintains reverence for its long history and country location, but it wows anew with a recent renovation and a passionate farm-to-table mission to demonstrate how locally sourced, fresh ingredients can truly become gourmet territory.

A divine sensory experience awaits diners in the comfy dining room and at the old-timey bar. After the earlier establishment closed in March 2020, it changed ownership, reopening in September 2021. Taking it slow at first — to do things “right” — Stonersville’s owners developed highly appealing fare. They started a bustling Sunday brunch business as well.

Local farms and farmers, cottage industries (e.g., cheesemakers) associated with nearby dairies, apiaries and fields yielding seasonal produce indigenous to this region lit a big spark in the culinary imagination of those involved in the restaurant’s rebirth.

This is just the beginning, says operating partner Raymond Keely, who points out the obvious opportunities at hand: “We’re on 20 acres here!” Once a full-time baker in the New Hope area, and a 54

When planning on dining hearty, order the “small” because it’s more than small, actually. You’ll choose three cheeses and two meats. Try Blue Bell cheese by Valley Milkhouse in Oley, made with cow’s milk for a “fudgy, peppery” taste. Chevre is smoothly supple, coming from Kirchenberg Farm, Fleetwood, while Sea Smoke — a bloomy rind from Elverson’s Amazing Acres Dairy — is uniquely lovely with earthy tonality and stunning on Stonersville’s

homemade crackers. You’ll love the somewhat smoky, spicy pepperoni sourced from Di Bruno Brothers (Philly), as well as the drycured Sopressata by Daniele (Rhode Island).

Accompanying are tangy Petite Pickles plus wee dishes of dips like honey, mustard and blueberry preserves.

Beverages to go with charcuterie or dinner vary widely, from a dedicated cider tap to numerous beers. Perkasie’s Free Will brews include the C.O.B. (Coffee Oatmeal Brown), a beer to remember with its tang and cocoa notes. As for cocktails, expect total satisfaction. The Orange Rosemary Old-Fashioned made with Knob Creek is a lip-licking drink indeed.

Who doesn’t love a plateful of sliders?

Selections cater to your personal preference and include tender Pulled Pork — Cuban Sliders made with pulled pork and Stoltzfus ham — and aromatic Chicken Tinga — slowcooked chicken with tomatoes and onions for a spicy-sweet effect. For the full monty, take on The Three Little Pigs, aptly named for its slow-cooked BBQ pork, Stoltzfus ham and applewood smoked bacon served on a brioche bun.

With typical care, the Stonersville Hotel dresses up its main burger options, including marvelous French fries made with locally grown potatoes. (As Keely says, “It’s in the ingredients.”) You can build your own burger, or try The Forager (with mushrooms), The Cordon (embellished with ham, cheese and thyme) or The Bacon Bleu. The latter burger indulges with savory bacon and crumbly bleu cheese, adorned with sauteed red onion and lettuce. What a juicy, full-fledged ode to hamburger-love! It’s fantasmagorical. Meats come from butchers from Berks and Lancaster counties, says Keely. He adds, “Eventually, we will be raising our own beef steer.”
