CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH IN BERKS
“The observance of Juneteenth is about the journey and achievement of African Americans – from a horrific period of sanctioned enslavement to the pinnacle of human endeavors. It is a story of pride, resilience and determination that will always be of historical and spiritual importance as it serves us well to understand that together, we can overcome all obstacles in our path,” explains Stacey Taylor, President of Juneteenth Reading PA. To that end, a Juneteenth Weekend Celebration is planned for June 15-18, and includes the 34th Annual Dr. Ronald E. Smith Awards and Recognition Scholarship Banquet on June 15, a Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall and Kickoff Luncheon and Opening Ceremonies on June 16, as well as a Community Family Barbecue on June 17, and Praise & Worship and Closing Ceremonies on June 18, including a prayer walk in the community addressing healing, violence and salvation. Times and up-to-date information for those interested in attending and celebrating can be found at facebook.com /JuneteenthReadingPA. – NIKKI M. MURRY
Farm Fun at Swartz’s
Roadside Stand
The Mohnton spot is far more than its name implies. Make a day of visiting. Here’s just a taste of what’s offered…
1 . Baby Goat Yoga.
On select dates, yogis and animal lovers alike can sign up for Baby Goat Yoga with a certified instructor. Held outside in the goat pasture or inside the pole barn in the event of bad weather, classes run for an hour. Check the Facebook event page for more info and to sign up.
2. Sheep Walk.
Swartz’s is one of the first farms in Berks to offer sheep walks. For 30 minutes, walk a sheep while a farmer answers any questions you may have about the animal, or any others on the farm. Must be 12 years or older to walk a sheep on your own.
3. Rent a Chick.
Want to raise chickens but aren’t sure you want to commit long-term? Inquire about the Rent a Chick program. The plan provides all essential items a chick needs for its first two weeks of life. At that point, you can decide to return or keep the animal.
