We can finally let the cat out of the bag! You’re reading THE most anticipated issue we produce each year – our Best of Berks issue! That’s right. The winners in 35 categories have had to keep their lips sealed for months, but now that our issue is out, the reveals and celebrations can begin!

Readers like you voted by the thousands to select the honorees featured starting on page 31. It’s a joy to make the congratulatory calls to the winners tapped as “Best” each and every year. This year is the 22nd of our Best of Berks readers choice awards, and we think it’s a strong class once again.

We want to extend a special thank you to students at Albright College, overseen by professor and Berks County Living freelance writer Marian Wolbers, for their hard work in crafting the profiles in this year’s issue. They did an outstanding job telling the stories of just why YOU voted each winner as the best of the best.

Also in this month’s issue, and in the spirit of celebrating the holiday season, we invite you to dress up a bit with some of the shimmering silver and glittering gold goodies featured in The Look Just flip to page 24 and see which suit your taste. Brewing Coffee Creations and Farm-Fresh Meals

If you’re in search of a fabulous cup of coffee and one of the best brunches in Berks, you must head to the Morgantown Coffee House at 4997 N. Twin Valley Rd., Elverson. Says owner David Backus, “We’ve created a space where guests have become friends.” Just what do those guests enjoy when visiting? Consider ordering the customer-favorite classic egg sandwich featuring a boiled and then baked bagel topped with a farm egg and local aged cheddar. Says David, “It’s always a win.” The Avocado Toast, Banh Mi and Classic BLT also receive rave reviews. Per demand, the coffee house will now be open for dinner Friday and Saturday nights. Any time is the perfect time to enjoy a cup of Collective Coffee. “From single origin coffee blends to their Synergy blend, we are able to source a crowd-pleasing coffee program that’s fresh and interesting,” asserts David. Berks Sign Company

Celebrates 30 Years

From a small, three-person sign shop to a more than 100-person, large-scale production facility at Third and Buttonwood streets in Reading, L&H Companies is proudly celebrating 30 years in 2022. L&H owner Chris Heinly explains that “In our world, it boils down to two words: design and build. We don’t like to refer to ourselves as a sign company, but rather as designers who happen to do work in the sign and graphic business. I have long said that a well-built, poor design is still a poor design. If you don’t start with a great design, you can’t have a great result.” You may have seen their work across the county and beyond. L&H customers include Redner’s Fresh Market, Tower Health, Fromuth, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Consol Energy Center and many more. Heinly grew up in Reading and uses his success to give back to organizations like Olivet Boys & Girls Club. Currently, L&H is partnering to help Hope Rescue Mission to donate interior and exterior signage for the nonprofit’s new Women & Children’s Center. Learn more at lhsigns.com. – NIKKI M. MURRY

8 DECEMBER 2022 | berkscountyliving.com AROUND TOWN BERKS BITS

A Decor Dream Come True:

ANITATrinket

It started with a dream and a love for the world of interiors. ANITATrinket, located on Richmond Street in Fleetwood, is a family-owned shop offering a range of unique home décor items and gifts along with other beautifully crafted pieces — many of which are made by local artisans. Shop owner Anita Tempesco holds both interior design and graphic design degrees as well as a love for interior aesthetics and furnishings. After obtaining her degrees, Anita was employed by Sherwin Williams for more than 30 years, growing, moving and thriving until her retirement in 2018. That’s when her dream began to unfold.

Anita’s longtime desire was to open a trinket shop when she retired. She and her (late) sister were excited to turn that dream into a reality. Her sister even named the shop ANITATrinket before it came into existence. The moniker has lived on not only for the business, but as a special memory in Anita’s heart for her beloved sister. In keeping the family-owned atmosphere, Anita’s entire family helps: her husband makes industrial lighting fixtures, while her sons assist with fresh, creative ideas and help run and maintain the business. Today, ANITATrinket continues to grow and flourish since it first opened in 2018.

A Unique Experience

Stepping inside is an experience all its own. The building dates back to the 1800s and was originally the Fleetwood Stone Saw Mill. The interior still exposes and shows off original materials such as the stone wall along the staircase, which gives the shop an added unique detail. Anita says, “It’s such a cool building. We tried to keep a lot of the integrity of the wood floors, the stone building and the beam ceiling.”

After taking in those physical details, you’ll then delight in some cozy scents — touches of cinnamon mingled with a hint of a woodsy fragrance creating a warm, rustic feel. Your eyes will wander from the floor up the walls and to the beautiful beam ceiling as you discover all sorts of items, from take-home rag wreath kits to trendy live-edge furniture pieces. Plus, there’s a small clothing boutique and much, much more. The impressive variety of décor items sweeps across the floor and continues upstairs to the second level where more handcrafted items and a special event space are housed. The facets of the building, the shop’s merchandise and the friendly staff will surely keep you coming back again and again to explore new products, seasonal items and fun workshops.

Wonderful Workshops & an Inviting Event Space

The Barrel Loft on the upper level of ANITA Trinket, managed in part by Anita’s daugh ter-in-law, Brianne, can be rented for events such as baby and bridal showers, birthday parties or business meetings. It’s also the stage for the many workshops that the shop offers. Some of those include pasta classes where you’ll make scrumptious homemade pastas like ravioli and pierogies. Other ses sions include wreath making, basket weav ing, cupcake/cake decorating and more. The Paint A Piece workshop invites you to bring in a piece of furniture from home to paint. No matter your skill level, these workshops will bring out your creative side!

FUN FACTS.

Open House. ANITATrinkets Holiday Open House is planned for Dec. 4 and will include photos with Santa and sparkling decorations to enhance the holiday atmosphere.

Get Advice. Looking to spruce up an interior space of your home but not sure where to start? Anita is happy to assist with your décor needs or questions.

IN THE LIMELIGHT WITH James Beidler Author & Genealogist

Nearly four decades ago, James Beidler began what he calls a “genealogy quest.” Since his initial foray into his family genealogy, he’s become the “go-to” speaker for German genealogy lectures across the country, and he’s written four commercially published genealogy books.

How did you become interested in genealogy? Almost 40 years ago, I was helping my mom with research on our church at the time, Bern Reformed United Church of Christ. I saw family names that were familiar to me based on the small pieces of genealogy I already had then, so I decided to go to Bern’s historic cemetery and see what else I could find. I guess you could say I never made it back from the cemetery because I’ve been on a genealogy quest ever since.

Can you tell me about the genealogy books you’ve written? The first book is a German genealogy guide, and the second book is a guide about online genealogy resources. The third is a guide about using newspapers in genealogy research. I used to be a copy editor for the Harrisburg Patriot-News , and I know how important newspapers are in research.

Newspapers are often used for the obituaries, but they should also be used for the rich cultural context added to your genealogy research. Finally, the fourth book is a genealogical historical atlas of Germany.

In addition to writing books, what other genealogy activities do you do? I’m literally living the dream as the interim executive director of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania; I was the executive director from 1999-2003, and now I get to do it again and finish some things I didn’t have time to do before. I do lectures and webinars. I also create document albums about historic properties tracing their history to William Penn, which is why I named that project From the Penns to the Present. Finally, I do a lot of freelance writing; in fact, I had a family history newspaper column, Roots & Branches, in the Altoona Mirror. You can learn more about these projects and my books and schedule me for webinars and presentations via my website jamesmbeidler.com. Outside of my genealogy work, I run my own small, part-time tax service.

Your home is also filled with family history, right? Yes. I live in a house in Berks that’s been in my family for more than a century. My great-great-grandfather purchased it in 1920, and he also claims to have laid the foundation for the house 50 years before he bought it. I inherited seven trunks full of family history items from multiple generations.

It sounds like genealogy is how you have fun. But how else do you relax and enjoy your free time? I enjoy going to the Jersey Shore, and I like going to festivals with Pennsylvania German history. My work and my fun really come together.

LEARN MORE.

For the genealogy buff.

The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania plans to release a Pennsylvania genealogical almanac and host a virtual genealogy event in 2023.

Fighting hunger. For more than 30 years, Beidler has participated in the Reading-Berks CROP Walk, which is part of a nationwide fundraiser to fight hunger.

TINAmisu at G.N.A. Ristorante

What’s special about this featured drink? When I was asked to make a specialty cocktail, I wanted to make a drink that would appease everyone’s palate a drink that someone who prefers beer, wine or liquor would enjoy. This is how I came up with the TINAmisu. I wanted to make a drink that described my manager/great coworker. Tina Grande Cirandine is exactly that. She runs a restaurant and aims to please and “appease” her customers as well as her employees. Tina loves bringing people together for celebrations of any kind. She not only works hard, but you can tell she loves what she does and treats her restaurant with the same dedication and love she gives her family. That is also how I feel about my job at GNA and my own family.

For what occasion would you recommend this cocktail?

The TINAmisu was created to adapt to any occasion. Due to the ingredients and the physical appearance of the drink itself, the occasion could be a wedding party, a night out with your friends, or something as simple as unwinding at the bar at GNA after a hard day at work. Every hour is a happy one at GNA. Besides the delicious food and drinks, you will get to experience some classic and entertaining candid moments between staff all while I am making your drinks, socializing and laughing with customers, and prepping to make sure your experience is one that you will love.

TINAmisu

• Chilled martini glass

• Shaker

• 1-ounce Italian espresso

• 1-2 dashes chocolate bitters

• Refrigerated homemade amaretto-infused whipping cream

• Ice

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Add all ounced ingredients and ice into shaker. Shake vigorously, then pour into chilled martini glass.

2. Top with homemade infused amaretto whipped cream and garnish with cocoa powder and chocolate shavings.

HAVE A DRINK WITH

Dana Loose

Dana was born and raised in Lancaster County and started working in the restaurant business at the age of 14 as a server at a campground. She was hooked. Explains Dana, “The restaurant business was in my blood. I fell in love with the chaos, the hustle and bustle of the business itself, all the knowledge of food and drinks I gained along the way, and most importantly, the relationships I developed with different customers; some who ‘til this day are still great friends. I ended up establishing my life in Berks County and being blessed with my husband of eight years and our two beautiful daughters who are my world. I have not turned back since and have no plans on disappearing from GNA. I would like to say they are ‘stuck with me.’”

PAIR IT WITH...

A secret optional ingredient if you’re ordering it at GNA. Ask your server or bartender for the ultimate fun pairing to this delicious drink.

Trauma Mama!

305 N. Park Rd. Wyomissing, 610.816.7473 willoughbysonpark.com

How does a full-time medivac paramedic become the winner of Best Coffee Spot? One CPR at a time. Mike Adams, owner of Firehouse Coffee, had a problem: where could he get a cup of coffee with great flavor, that could also sustain him throughout his workday? Rather than wait for someone to solve the issue, he developed a computerized coffee system that produces and duplicates delicious blends every time. Through lots of experimentation, Mike created blends like CPR, Cardiac Cath French Vanilla and customer-favorite Trauma Mama, which can be purchased and brewed at home. For customers who want to share their favorite Firehouse blends, Mike offers his coffees in gift baskets. If merch is more your thing, you can join the “Bean Team” with a t-shirt. Asserts Adams, “You won’t be able to come to Firehouse Coffee without finding a coffee you love.”

Best LASIK Surgery Practice Eye Consultants of PA

For the eighth year in a row, Eye Consultants of PA has won this award! LASIK surgery, where specialized laser technology corrects vision, is — as ophthalmologists Dr. Jonathan Primack and Dr. Adam Altman say — “the art and science of getting people out of glasses.” Dr. Primack asserts, “We’re very honored to have this recognition. We work very hard to make sure our patients have the best outcomes.” Both he and Dr. Altman are involved with every step, including the preoperative evaluation: “That’s where we do the testing to make sure someone is a good candidate.” They follow a 22-point safety check prior to surgery. Importantly, adds Dr. Altman, “Both of us are the only Fellowshiptrained cornea specialists in the area,” and patients must be 100 percent qualified as candidates. He notes, “The happiest part of our practice is seeing our patients afterwards. They’re amazed with their quality of vision.”

Best Consignment Shop From The Heart Consignment

From The Heart Consignment aims “to lift women up,” says owner Katherine Scheese, likening it to a retail ministry that aims to do good works through the store for the community. Says Scheese, “We want women to feel special, cared about and heard.” From The Heart hosts an annual fashion show fundraiser every year to benefit Hannah’s Hope Ministries and also has a Purse Project campaign during the holidays to support women in need. Most recently, the shop partnered with Breast Cancer Support Services to dress two models for the store's fashion show. Popular with shoppers are the shop’s designer handbags and name-brand women’s tops, both new with tags and gently used. Also available is an assortment of home goods. Scheese is certainly not a fan of filling local landfills, especially when so many items have lots of life left in them. Her store is a place to rediscover these great finds. The amazing amount that From The Heart gives back to the community is what sets it apart, making it a Best of Berks winner. — ISABELLA RAZZANO 4600 Penn Avenue, Ste. In times of need, Helping Harvest wins the top award for successfully adapting to the increased demands of the community. According to President Jay Worral, the workers of Helping Harvest are able to “serve 125,000 clients in Berks and Schuylkill counties by providing food to be distributed to those families through pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other organizations.” Over the course of the past six months, in excess of $1 million worth of food was provided to households throughout Reading — a significant change from the $7,000 dollars a month prior to the pandemic. Increasing needs come with more opportunities for volunteering, says Worral. Three ways to assist are through financial donations, physically packing of food in the warehouse and at mobile markets. — ELIZABETH CHURCHILL

Best Kids’ Menu (non-chain)

BERKSHIRE Family Restaurant

Most parents hate the words, “I don’t know” at dinnertime, but they can avoid them at Berkshire Family Restaurant, a two-time winner in this category. Their kids’ menu is any picky eater’s dream, consisting of meals like the “I don’t care,” a grilled cheese with French fries, or the “I’d rather starve,” a bowl of mac and cheese. The restaurant cares about affordability as well, with meals ranging from $4.99 to $6.99, including a meal, drink and even dessert. “We named the dishes after what parents would hear their kids say,” says Manager Allyson LaRocca, and some names were inspired by owner Manny Vlastos’ children. The yummy entrees and affordability have families coming back for more. Children under 10 years of age love stating the names of the dishes because it makes them laugh every time.

— MICHAEL THOMAS

Another year, another win! This marks the third year the Greenhouse Café has been open, as well as the third year they have brought home the win for this award. Co-owner Uday Shah says the restaurant’s mission is “to share our plantbased lifestyle that we live and have with people, and to create flavorful dishes.” Even meat eaters won’t be disappointed as Shah, laughing, adds, “When we ask customers if they miss the meat, they say ‘no.’” The Greenhouse Café sets itself apart by creating dishes from scratch with original reci pes that are constantly being refined, like their hummus, which one dairy farmer calls “the creamiest hummus ever.” Co-owner Nikki Motichka hopes to continue innovating and expanding, to “make [vegan food] accessible for people who want a more plantbased diet.”

Making Fabulous Holiday Memories

Making Fabulous Holiday Memories

Katie Broskey bides her time, but breathes a huge sigh of relief when the last trick-or-treater turns away from her front door and heads for home Halloween night.

It’s not that Katie doesn’t enjoy the lure and laughs of that haunted holiday. But when it comes to spirits none can compare, at least for Katie, to the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

LIVING IN STYLE
54 DECEMBER 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

Every November 1, the Halloween décor comes down and finds its collective way into storage. In quick succession, the boxes of Christmas decorations come out of attic hibernation and into the basement, first and second floors of the century-old Hampden Heights residence Katie, her husband Matthew and daughter Addison called home for nine years until this past spring.

“I start decorating as soon as Halloween is over,” Katie says. “I love to have everything done early. I pack up Halloween as soon as the trick-or-treating ends.”

A Beautiful Memory

While that home has welcomed new owners, the holiday decor of its 2021 Christmas past is preserved in family photos, in Katie’s Facebook posts and on these pages. And, Katie’s style, process and passion for Christmas decorating can apply to other residences as well. In fact, as an awardwinning real estate agent, she’s more than happy to share seasonal decorating tips and does so on her very active Facebook page.

The Broskeys’ former home is a circa 1929 Tudor-style all-stone stunner built by a Carpenter Steel executive. It boasts a turret, slate roof, two wood-burning fireplaces and curved open doorways.

The main floor consists of a living room, dining room, expanded kitchen and great room addition.

There is a master bedroom with en suite bath, two other bedrooms and another bath, all off the upstairs hallway. The basement level, Matt’s domain, has wood paneling, a half-bath, stone wood burning fireplace, and hand-painted tiled flooring.

Added to the original footprint is a backyard flagstone terrace with a Berks County brownstone retaining wall, outdoor stovetop and fireplace, and a waterfall feature and koi pond.

The 3,500-square-foot residence also has wrought-iron stair rails and deep windowsills, boons for seasonal decorations and displaying objects de art…and holiday greenery.

In her Reading home, Katie put up five 7-foot or taller trees as well as placing small trees throughout the many rooms. These trees are of the artificial genre. The “real” one arrives later.

Katie likes to say that no matter where anyone stands in the home, one could always see at least two trees – a few more than during her growing up years.

“My parents had one tree, maybe two,” she recalls, “and the family always decorated the tree.”

An Organized Approach

Katie’s approach to holiday decorating is systematic.

“My set-up time is two weeks,” she says, “so I really focus on it. I’m an organized person so I have everything labeled for each tree and room. I start in the formal living room and with the mantel and the windowsills there.”

Pencil trees dominate — two in the entryway alone — and each has a theme of sorts. One of her favorites is a peacock-themed tree that stood at the top of the stairs. The inspiration was to have the peacock ornaments complement the jewel tones of the carpet.

“I take it one tree at a time,” she says. “I focus first on getting everything I want for it.”

Planning ahead – she likes to add another tree honoring Addison’s birthdays – is both helpful and economical.

“I always shop post-Christmas at Boscov’s, Riverview Gardens and other shops for good

quality pieces,” she says, “and I always make sure to label the bins.”

Her young daughter is already an avid holiday assistant.

“Addison loves it and helps with everything,” she says. “She’s at the age (5) where she can help. She has certain spots where she knows things go. She helps with unwrapping and wrapping the ornaments in bubble wrap.”

The “real” tree is a feature of the large dining room. The Broskeys favor Frazier furs. Their go-to source is the Beck Tree Farm in northern Berks. The weekend after Thanksgiving, weather permitting, is harvest time and the family, particularly Addison, enjoys the wagon ride to find and cut the perfect tree.

“This tradition is really good for our daughter,” says Katie.

A tree of six-and-one-half feet fits perfectly in the dining room next to one of the two built-in corner cabinets facing Alsace Road. The circa 1920s dining set — table, chairs and china cabinet — were gifted by a friend and perfectly complement the age of the house while

affording ample space for the tree that boasts multi-color bubble lights, popcorn garland and tinsel highlighting its treasured ornaments.

“I call it my keepsake tree,” says Katie. “The ornaments mark different milestones of our lives.”

LIVING IN STYLE

Addison enjoys the wagon ride to find and cut the perfect tree
.

Each summer the family travels to Ocracoke Island in North Carolina and every Christmas a new handcrafted ornament from there joins the sentimental adornments.

One of her favorites is a “baby’s first Christmas tree” trinket gifted to her by her mother along with a ceramic tree that, she says, “is a lot older than me.” That tree is part of Katie’s ceramic glass tree collection on display in the dining room.

When it comes to Christmas lights, Katie’s displays run the gamut from mid-century multicolored strings to bubble lights to miniature lights and now those with LED illumination.

“I love a mix, especially incorporating an old-fashioned, vintage vibe in the dining room,” she says.

Most of the pencil trees have warm white mini lights. Two flocked pencil trees become fraternally lit companions – one in white, the other multi-colored.

Katie’s “starting” point, the expansive living room, is dominated by three features: a large fireplace and mantel, a six-foot-high pier mirror and an antique square grand piano.

For Christmas 2021, the mantel was adorned with a mélange of small trees, miniature houses and a church, a pinkish reindeer at the center, a couple of candles, sparse evergreen sprigs intertwined with a string of decorative cube lights and a homemade garland of hard candies. Attached to the mantel are four sizable heavy gray fur stockings. Standing guard of it all is a three-foot nutcracker who is moved safely aside when the fireplace is fired up. Nearby, a small Santa stands whimsically assessing it all.

The pier mirror is placed opposite the fireplace, making the living room seem even larger and dispersing the many lights.

The Sound of Christmas

The American-made 1876 Centennial Edition Emerson Square Grand Piano is the attention grabber of the space and replaced its predecessor, a Hazelton Brothers piano, in early 2018.

Katie, an accomplished pianist since childhood, researched and looked at a number of pianos before deciding on this elaborately carved and engineered unique piano (the keys get longer from left to right) that weighs 800 pounds.

At the holidays, the piano is sparsely decorated, adorned with a miniature manger scene, a poinsettia and a Santa figure. And it is a piano that is used. Katie, in accordance with her family’s tradition, takes to the keyboard at the holidays.

“Each Christmas (starting in elementary school) I would usually have some type of piano solo in my school’s band/chorus Christmas concert…and boy would I be nervous,” she recalls. “My family would always ask that I play them songs during our annual extended family Christmas Eve party. My (late) grandfather Clifford Sloppy would always ask me to play The Little Drummer Boy ; it was his favorite Christmas song. I think of him every time I hear the song. My grandmother Eleanor Sloppy helped me to purchase this antique square grand piano which ties this all together.”

The sounds of the holidays poured through the first-floor rooms that easily transition one to another through the entryway hallway and generous openings. A great-room addition between the remodeled open-concept kitchen and dining room hosted the largest tree — a pre-lit 12-footer. The open-wooden beam work pays tribute to the home’s Tudor-inspired construction. An enormous Palladian-style window brings in abundant light.

Outside Lights

While Katie and Addison handled the indoor décor, the man of the house took on the exterior.

“The outside décor is 98 percent Matt,” says Katie. “He does the two porch pots, the bushes, lines the walkway and makes sure there are blow-ups, Mr. Grinch and Santa among them, for Addison.”

Matt, an Oley Valley School District educator and administrator, also pays tribute to his country.

“He is a Marine Corps veteran and works with red, white and blue lights,” she says.

While neighbors and passersby on foot, cycle and vehicle can enjoy the view from the road, it’s a lucky group of family friends that spend time with the Broskeys during the holidays.

“Every year we have an ugly sweater Christmas party, and it’s always a great time,” she says.

In the days after New Year’s when the Christmas décor is taken down and returned to its respective boxes in the large attic (think Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation , Katie muses), it’s time for another holiday — Valentine’s Day — to take center stage in the Broskey home.

“We love to decorate and create different holiday displays throughout the year,” she says.

Craft+Barrel in Topton: A

FEAST WITH FLAIR

When sister and brother Kaylynn and Shane Gruber decided to turn Topton into a prime dining destination, they knew they wanted to focus on delicious comfort food. “But we didn’t want our food to be like everyone else’s,” says Kaylynn. “We wanted a lot of homemade foods on the menu — smoked foods, fresh foods” with originality and flair. They also wanted to highlight local craftspeople, giving diners an opportunity to browse and purchase made-in-PA honey, cheeses, candles and interior décor items with a farmhouse-cool feel. Revamping the interior of what used to be (some years ago) the Topton House Hotel, the Grubers accomplished their goal by updating both the old-time elegant bar area and the larger dining area to line up with their catchy motto: “Eat, drink, shop!” The result is a charming, vintage-chic destination for lunch or dinner on Thursday through Sundays from Noon to 8pm. Best of all, they enlisted their dad Rick’s restaurateur expertise to include an onsite smoker that produces everything from unrivalled smoked brisket, chicken, pulled pork and baked beans, to several cheeses and — believe it or not — smoked candy! Great fun. Additionally, their mom Robbin’s home cooking, influenced by her Hawaiian ancestors, weaves its way into some of their most popular dishes.

Lobster & Crab Soup; Buffalo Bowl Salad

From their mouth-watering soups — a cup or crock of luscious Lobster and Crab, classic French Onion, or Soup du Jour — to unique salads and greens that can be served as salads or made into wraps, this restaurant has something to please everyone. Mixed textures and harmonious ingredients reign supreme here. The Buffalo Bowl is well named and a meal in itself, comprised of grilled buffalo chicken, buffalo fries, spring mix, tomato, onion, CheddarMonterey jack cheese and tangy bleu cheese dressing.

The burger and sandwich menu is similarly intriguing. Three examples: the Ol’ Smokey is loaded with smoked sausage, peppers, sauteed onions and C+B steak sauce, while the Boss Chick features smoked pulled chicken enveloped with peach bourbon BBQ sauce, plus cole slaw and a toasted bun. Their Reuben adds Guinness kraut to the corned beef and Swiss on rye.

DINING OUT
BRISKET SKILLET

Pretzellas to Start

Never heard of pretzellas? That’s because it’s a new (and legally protected), fabulous invention. With a glass of Clover Hill Riesling or Yuengling Lager, or one of Craft+Barrel’s refreshing cocktails, this starter is a big winner. Make that a champion in the pantheon of terrific appetizers. Think fried mozzarella sticks only with a supertoasted taste created by a crunchy pretzel coating. The fresh, soft, cheesy interior contrasts in a delightful way with classic pretzel flavor and crunch — a truly Pennsylvania appetizer. It comes with warm marinara sauce for dipping…SO good.

Other alluring appetizers include pierogies, chicken wings (with numerous flavor choices), a smoked hot dog and personal pizza. For seafood lovers, aim for the Sesame Tuna or Sweet & Spicy Shrimp.

A Brisket for the Ages & Heavenly Shrimp

If you’re new to Craft+Barrel, Kaylynn recommends trying one of their two most popular entrees. The first is Brisket Skillet. “That’s our in-house, slow-smoked brisket over homemade mashed potatoes with a homemade whiskey peach BBQ, homemade cole slaw and our smoked baked beans on the side,” she explains. Talk about a meal that coordinates in every way! The brisket possesses a perfectly delicate smokiness, practically falling apart on the fork, mingling with mashed spuds enhanced by potato skin, lending an old-school lumpy texture and delivering a magical, memorable taste — all presented in a hot cast-iron skillet à la campfire. Creamy and dreamy is the super-fresh slaw, a cool breeze in the mouth to experience right before those just-spicy, deeply smoked beans conquer the palate with their own riotous splendor.

A second “most popular” dish is the Thai Ginger Shrimp. “This is breaded jumbo shrimp over Thai rice noodles tossed in a sweet ginger sesame sauce with steamed broccoli,” says Kaylynn. Imagine the tenderness of fat shrimp enlivened by a deep-toasted, crunchy outer layer, marrying up with twirls of rice pasta exuding a penetrating heat in every bite. Black sesame seeds dot the jumbled pile of noodles for this Asian-inspired sensation. Utterly satisfying.

Double Chocolate Hot Fudge Brownies — Unabashedly Yummy

A final surrender comes with dessert. Admittedly, the Waffle Sundae issues a siren call…but so do the Homemade Fudge Brownies, any chocoholic’s pure joy. The sheer amount of chocolate involved in this un-shy dessert is unreal. Such a treat, served warm with a dollop of melting ice cream. It is indeed rich, though, and a generous portion, so consider requesting two spoons to enjoy it with a loved one.

Also top-notch is the Homemade Cheesecake, which not only is truly cheesy but rich in integrity — a true cake-style cheesecake — and comes from a cherished home recipe attributed to mom. On a recent evening, the topping was raspberry vanilla for a tart touch.
