Fire department will give new life to Fritz Peak Observatory

Recollections of the Teller House

By Mary Peery Here begins a series of little histories about the Teller House, which will celebrate its 150 anniversary on June 25. The first history is from Muriel Sibell Wolle, who taught at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and served as head of the Department of Fine Arts. Wolle loved Colorado ghost towns and learned about their history, primarily from: her visits, tales from the locals, and library research.

Along with visiting the small mountain towns, she would sketch, draw and paint pictures to augment

her observations. During one of her visits to Central City, she had her pictures on display at the Teller Law Office, which will soon become the Eureka Street Popcorn. he iconic Fritz Peak Observatory, which has been sitting in mothballs for years, will be getting a “third life” soon. This week, the Timberline Fire Protection District will acquire the former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) building and eventually convert it into a fire station.

The public is being invited to tour the forthcoming fire station from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 9, according to Chief Paul Ondr of Timberline.

The fire department’s board will conduct a meeting in the building immediately following the open house.

“We’re very excited about this,” he said.

Timberline plans to transform the observatory into a fire station, which will house fire-related equipment currently stored in a bay at Gilpin County’s public works building in Rollinsville.

The department would like to build “two or three” new bays for other fire trucks and fire apparatus at the observatory in the future, Ondr said. “The ability to obtain this large facility in such a great location at NO cost to our residents is simply incredible.”

The Fritz Peak Observatory, at 19126 Highway 119, includes a three-story main building, a nearby two-bedroom cottage and Dutch Peak, an observation site behind the building that overlooks most of the Rollinsville and mid-county area. The building will require some roof and septic system repairs and other remodeling. “With this additional operational space, an increased number of firefighters can be on duty, expanding our current resident, shift, and overnight firefighter programs and accommodations,” Chief Ondr stated. “We anticipate reduced response times to the north end of the county once we are fully functional.”

According to Ondr, Timberline began discussions about Fritz Peak Observatory in 2017. Although NOAA stopped using the facility for its research several years earlier, it was still being used by the late Dr. Clyde Burnett, a professor from Florida Atlantic University, who conducted daily research in the building from 1977 until 2019. Dr. Burnett, who wrote several books, passed away later that year.

The observatory on the east side of the highway is about 8,790 feet in elevation. It is part of two buildings on a 5.8-acre site that also includes Dutch Peak, which is at an elevation of 8,954 feet.

Property right wars We’re in the fourth week of the invasion of Ukraine by the Russians. Slavic nation against Slavic nation, bloodline fighting to the death over the rich fertile plains of Ukraine, that provide along with Russia, one-third of the world grain products.

The major wars fought on earth’s vast domain have been over land and religion. This latest conflict appears to be over land and Putin’s vision of restoring and resurrecting the old USSR empire.

Over three decades since Ukraine split away from “Mother Russia” and was established as a separate democratic country. Putin misjudged that some of the population would not like to return to his communist regime. It was reported that some of the Russian soldiers in the war were instructed to take their dress uniforms and that they would be welcomed as liberators and heroes.

Instead, they were met with javelin and stinger anti-tank weapons.

The red army doesn’t appear to be the tough, rugged, hardened troops defending Stalingrad and defeating some of Germany’s best SS troops who perished on harsh Russian soil.

The Romans, Persians, Mongols, Egyptians, British, Japanese, and a lengthy list of empires and rulers attempted to take more land by warfare and military invasions. Some were successful and changed world boundaries forever. In the early day, Americans took land away from the Indian tribes and put them on reservations.

Germany wanted to dominate Europe and had they invaded England rather than Russia, the United Kingdom might be producing Volkswagens and better beer. Where would Hitler have stopped?

But it was not Hitler invading Poland that brought the U.S. into World War II, but the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed on Dec. 7, 1941, “Today is a day that will live in infamy.”

The United States entered the war against Japan and Germany shortly after that. Before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the death of 2403 military personnel, America was sending military supplies to England. It had not entered the war somewhat similar to the present-day Ukraine conflict.

Roosevelt, and the nation’s leadership, became fearful of the Japanese, many born in America, and forced 120,000 Japanese/American citizens into 10 internment camps across America. One of the camps, “Ameche,” located at Grenada, East of Pueblo in the Arkansas Valley, became home to 7,300 Japanese internees. A total of 10,000 Japanese passed through Ameche. This past year the camp was designated as a National Monument site. It will be preserved in history as a reminder of the harsh treatment of Japanese citizens and how hysteria can grip a nation. Our Japanese citizens were innocent, but the death and destruction of American lives and the threat of a possible Japanese invasion invoked the action at that moment in history.

Governments, when challenged, can do

stringent things and invoke certain emergency powers that may be right at the time, but looking back into history may seem arbitrary by modern-day thoughts.

The proposal to rename Mt. Evans because Gov. Evans was governor at the Sand Creek Massacre of Indians is an example of rewriting history from then to now.

Recently, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau crushed the trucking impasse in Ontario by seizing the trucks, closing their bank accounts, and seeking retribution from donors to the peaceful trucker protests.

Currently, any Russian oligarchs who owns property in the United States and worldwide are having their yachts, jets, estates, and a worldclass soccer franchise, all seized because they have alleged contact with Russia. Going back in history 30 years, only 13 percent of the old USSR was dominated by the Communist elite, who divided up much of the Soviet wealth when the USSR dissolved. Some stayed in the newly formed government while others departed over time, investing their wealth worldwide, including New York, London and even Aspen real estate.

What right does the government have to seize private property anywhere in the free world when not at war? If a war breaks out with Russia, will we round up millions of Russian/ Americans and reopen Ameche?

It is repulsive to see peaceful dissident truck drivers have their trucks and bank accounts seized. It is repugnant to see any foreigner’s property seized in the United States over a political driven civil war or uprising worldwide. Many middle east investors own property in the United States. It is reported that China owns thousands of acres of agricultural land in our farm belts, along with some of our meat processing firms. If they invade Taiwan, will we seize the Chinese properties in the United States? U.S. land and properties? Will they, in turn, take U.S. investments in China like the new Tesla factory?

Emergency powers in wartime may reach extremes, but the United States has bolstered military aid to Ukraine while attempting to stay out of a major war with Russia. I credit President Biden and the Pentagon for not putting boots on the ground and “no-fly” air support and delivery of jet planes from NATO countries. The conflict is painful to watch and endure for all Americans and the civilized world. We can only pray for a peace treaty to end this conflict before a more significant war explodes.

Ukraine fighters have captured the hearts of Americans, and we want them to maintain their democracy and freedoms. Many local Russian/ Americans are appalled at what Putin has done to their Russian reputation and image. There is a message to heed; the Russian public would not support this war if they had transparency in their media. We still enjoy the freedom of the press, and we must never lose that constitutional privilege.

Putin may find the old proverb, “If you live by the sword, you may die by the sword.”

Employment in 2022: “Everybody wants you!”

Thousands of Americans lost their jobs during the last significant economic downturn, which stretched from December 2007 through June 2009. Thirteen years later, it’s a vastly different scene nationwide – including Gilpin County.

There are swarms of employment signs on display at local businesses. They include “now hiring,” “join our team,” and “start a new career,” to name a few.

According to Black Hawk City Manager Stephen Cole, finding the “right people” isn’t easy.

“To compete in today’s tight labor market, Black Hawk staff routinely evaluates employee compensation to ensure we offer a competitive salary and a benefits package that will attract new employees and retain current employees. Our City Council has created an employee-friendly workplace that establishes a pro-

work/life balance. Although it’s taking longer than in the past to fill vacancies, we feel confident we will be able to fill our vacant positions once we get our message out to job seekers about the benefits of working for the City of Black Hawk. It is more difficult to recruit and retain employees, a situation occurring across the country.”

The arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020 resulted in a significant financial impact on many businesses. Some leaders, who owned restaurants or walk-in operations, closed completely during stay-at-home mandates. Employers in other industries reduced staffing levels as business income fell. Other bosses were able to keep running by allowing staffers to work remotely from home, using computers, cell phones and video conferencing technologies to stay in touch with customers and fellow employees.

As the nation slowly recovered from the worst pandemic in

memory, employers found themselves with a new set of workplace challenges. Some employees didn’t want to return to the office daily. In contrast, others put in their notice and sought new opportunities elsewhere. Tens of millions of workers quit their jobs since last summer, creating situations labeled “The Great Resignation” or “The Great Reshuffling.”

Although the employees said farewell to their old jobs, they didn’t necessarily seek new positions. Business leaders said the “The Great Absence” of potential employees could potentially be the result of several things: ● Older employees (age 55 and up) watched many older family members and friends die due to complications associated with Covid-19. Those in that age category took early retirements, hoping to enjoy their remaining years during these uncertain times. ●

Those in their prime working years don’t want to relocate to accept new positions.

Many seek remote work or jobs that don’t require regular trips to an office or commutes that may cost them hours from their personal hours.

●

Some potential workers may not want full-time work because they want to spend more time with their schoolage children and families.

●

Younger employees, including those considered Generation Z or young Millennials, are not joining traditional companies and organizations.

Some in those age categories are trying to generate their own incomes as media influencers, YouTube or Tik Tok stars.

In recent months, Black Hawk casinos have been reporting record revenues and increased visitors, especially on weekends.

Operating a business during high-volume times requires dozens of workers. The Monarch Casino Resort Spa held its grand opening in March, completed a $400 million expansion. The casinos website has openings for several positions, including IT and tech; leadership, food and beverage; hospitality; engineering and facilities; and positions on the gaming floor. Neighboring Ameristar Casino Resort Spa also is seeking dozens of workers for various jobs ranging from hotel and casino workers to those who specialize as massage specialists or finger-nail technicians.

Nearly two dozen different job posts are offered at the Isle Casino in Black Hawk’s GOLD (Gaming, Outstanding Lodging and Dining) District along Main Street.

Anyone stopping in at a casino in Central City or Black Hawk recently has seen the signs offering employment opportunities.

Maverick Gaming, which owns Z Casino in Black Hawk and the Grand Z and Dragon Tiger in Central City, has offered new employees a $1,000 hiring bonus.

It is seeking to fill 36 positions at

the trio of casinos. Their newspaper ads offer new workers food and gas discounts (the company owns the Z Stop gas station on Highway 119), a 401k retirement plan, medical, dental and vision benefits, and other perks. “No experience needed – we will train you,” according to the listing.

Easy Street and the Famous Bonanza casinos in Central City are offering to pay for a new employee’s gaming license for new hires if their new job requires one.

They also offer a $300 signing bonus. The illuminated screens hanging outside the Red Dolly Casino tell passers-by of job opportunities, including line cooks.

Other “now hiring” signs can be found at Dostal Alley Brewpub in Central City.

The same as businesses, local governments are scrambling to attract and land new workers, many of whom will be coming from neighboring counties. Enticements include increased salaries, benefits and perks.

By leafing through the pages of the Weekly Register-Call, there are dozens of available government jobs available in Gilpin County, the city of Black Hawk and Central City. Many of Gilpin County’s 6,600 residents are already employed in the local gaming-hospitality industry, while hundreds more hold government positions.

Local employers, including government leaders, depend on workers who live outside the county’s boundaries to fill positions. Increasing pay rates, improving benefit packages and offering new employee sign-on bonuses attract those who live in Jefferson, Denver, Arapahoe, Adams, Boulder and Clear Creek counties to work in Gilpin County.

Currently, Gilpin County has 17 positions available for prospective employees, ranging in pay from $12.54 hourly for a youth camp aide to a full-time finance director, whose income could be negotiated between $60,222 and $72,266 annually.

The county offers benefits packages for many positions.

For months, Central City has been looking for a public works maintenance worker and a water treatment plant operator. Pay for the public works position starts at $18.96 per hour; the water treatment plant post range from $19.91-$23.40 per hour, plus benefits.

In Black Hawk, where casino tax revenues set a record last year, providing higher starting salaries and benefits isn’t an issue.

In recent months, the city gave bonuses to all employees. It also has allowed employees to stay on the clock during lunch breaks as an additional benefit.

Black Hawk has job openings in the police, public works and water departments. Pays start at $46,902 for a maintenance worker while a new water department manager could be paid, depending on experience, from $120,308 to $138,354.” The city’s job postings say Black Hawk offers an “unbelievable benefit package and exceptional opportunity to serve in Colorado’s premier gaming community.”

Last year, Central City went to a four-day workweek (Monday-Thursday), offering many employees a three-day weekend.

Last week, the City of Black Hawk adopted a similar four-day plan for many jobs that are not in the police, fire or public works departments, most of which require 24-hour or on-call availability. The four-day workweek is expected to continue into September when it will be reevaluated.

Cole commented, “Our commitment to City employees includes looking for ways to support their work-life balance in the wake of rising inflation and fuel costs as 85 percent of our employees live in the Denver metro area. Our employees agree that a four-day workweek will help them manage rising gasoline prices better and still provide City residents with the high level of service they expect and deserve.”

Colorado wants more water, but not floods

Droughts and wildfires have been news topics in Colorado and the West during recent years. However, often omitted from the conversation of potentially perilous natural events is the subject of floods, which also have devastated parts of the Centennial State.

Lower-than-normal precipitation amounts have sounded the alarm bells around the western United States, including most of Colorado. Terms, including “megadrought,”

“severe drought,” and “moderate drought,” are frequently used to describe conditions in various regions.

Another term, “aridification,” used by climate scientists and researchers, describes the continued dry condition of soils over a prolonged period. It has been reported – many times – that the West is in its driest period in more than 1,200 years. That lack of rainfall has reduced the flow of the Colorado and other rivers, leading to less water being available to more than 20 million people in

That lack of precipitation also is considered a factor for the growing numbers of forest fires and wildfires. In 2020, Colorado experienced the three largest wildfires in state history: the Cameron Peak, East Troublesome and Pine Gulch fires. Three months ago, exceptionally-strong winds fueled the Marshall Fire in Boulder County, destroying more than 1,084 homes, killing two people and displacing thousands of Louisville and Superior residents on Dec. 30, 2021. The quick-spreading inferno is

considered the most destructive wildfire in state history, causing an estimated $1 billion in losses. As recently as last weekend, another blaze started near the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder.

Floods, like fires, also can result in the substantial loss of property and life. Fortunately for humans, they don’t occur as often.

In Gilpin County, there have been several floods – mostly flash floods – during the past 150 years in the valleys tucked between hills and mountains. One of the most historic floods occurred following several rains around Black Hawk during the summer of 1887. The ordinarily gentle stream that flows along Gregory Street from Central City to Black Hawk turned into a raging torrent, reaping heavy damage to buildings along the stretch.

At the time, Black Hawk was a quarter-century old and a boomtown. Thousands left their homes in the eastern U.S. and flocked to Black Hawk, Central City and surrounding Gilpin County, hoping to find gold and strike it rich.

Black Hawk had other flash floods, one in 1914 and another during the mid-1980s.

A few years before 1990, the latter took place when Colorado voters approved limited gaming for Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. In that modern-era “gold rush,” developers flocked to Black Hawk to build casinos, aspiring to make a fortune from visitors who came to play slot machines and video poker.

Clear Creek in downtown Black Hawk.

Here’s a cringe-worthy question: What would happen if a flash flood – akin to the one that occurred in 1887 – struck Black Hawk today?

Given certain weather-related circumstances, it could happen.

However, thanks to newer technologies - including satellite imaging and drought monitoring equipment - early awareness of a potential flood are possible. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed an executive order that created the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA). It was given the dual mission of emergency management and civil defense. When a hurricane, tornado, fire, flood or other emergency occurs, FEMA dispatches teams to help local governments and civilians recover from the disaster.

FEMA also provided supplies and funds to organizations nationally during the Covid-19 pandemic, including assistance to Gilpin County.

FEMA also has developed a nationwide plan to assess areas for potential floods and offers property owners in those areas the opportunity to purchase government-backed flood insurance. The federal authorities also designate flood zones throughout the county, which give property owners awareness of whether or not their home or business could sustain damages in the event of a flood.

Locally, FEMA has updated flood-zone information to government leaders in Gilpin County, Central City and Black Hawk. In February, Gilpin County and Central City officials approved updates Continued on next page

to ordinances and flood zone maps recommended by FEMA. Last week, Black Hawk’s city council adopted its revised guidelines ahead of FEMA’s April 8 deadline.

Such revised ordinances establish flood zones for potential building projects, requiring contractors and developers to build structures where the potential for flooding is minimized.

Municipalities can also develop stormwater runoff standards, potentially reducing the amount of water that will flow through a low-lying area following rain or after snow melts.

FEMA also lists areas most likely to sustain heavy damage during infrequent, larger floods. The agency categorizes “100-year floods” or “500year floods” as potential events that may occur only once in a lifetime or longer.

In approving its new ordinance for FEMA, Black Hawk announced a new way for residents and businesses to learn if they are in a flood plain. On its website (www.cityofblackhawk. org), the City will list its flood zones as part of its Global Information System (GIS) mapping system. The city launched the new mapping section last month and contains a state-of-the-art look at Black Hawk. **** Concerns for destructive floods arise after wildfires. When trees are destroyed, and soils are covered by ash, rain is less likely to be absorbed into the ground, reaching streams more quickly. Fallen trees and landslides also can impact waterways. Following the Cameron Peak Fire, destructive debris flow in Larimer County led to flash flooding in the Poudre Canyon on July 20, 2021. The floods destroyed five homes and killed one person.

streams in the region. Officials cited that sediments, debris, dissolved nutrients and heavy metals could clog intake pipes, cause algae, reduce reservoir capacity, cloud and contaminate water – quickly raising the cost of water treatment. Those providers used water – previously stored in large underground and above-ground tanks – and alternative methods to supply customers until polluted streams became suitable again. **** Flood Factor, a free online tool created by the nonprofit First Street Foundation, makes it easy for residents to learn their property’s risk of flooding and understand how flood risks are changing because of the changing environment.

According to Flood Factors, 1,375 properties in Gilpin County have a

“greater than 26 percent chance” of being severely affected by flooding during the next 30 years. The report said that the 1,375 properties represent 16 percent of all properties in Gilpin County.

In addition to the damage to properties, flooding can also cut off access to utilities, emergency services, transportation and may impact the overall economic well-being of an area.

Overall, according to Flood Factor, Gilpin County has a “major risk” for severe flooding during the next 30 years, which means flooding is likely to impact day-to-day life within the community. **** The Mile High Flood District, available online, has information about the eight largest floods in the Denver metro area. The largest flood oc-

curred in 1965, resulted in 21 deaths statewide and caused an estimated $4 billion in damages.

More recently, a September 2013 flood killed 10 people and caused nearly $4 billion in damage across 24 Colorado counties. That included four people who died in Boulder County.

In Idaho Springs, an elderly man died when the ground collapsed beneath him, and he was swept away by Clear Creek. A section of Coal Creek Canyon (Highway 72) on the GilpinBoulder-Jefferson County boundary was damaged, resulting in the road being closed for two months. Overall, the flood-displaced 18,000 people and destroyed more than 1,800 homes and 200 businesses.

Another clipping from the Central City Register of June 25, 1872, described the grand opening of the building: “Four years ago, the Register began the agitation of the hotel subject, and its editors resolved that it should never cease until a new hotel went up or the paper went down…

This resulted in a proposition from Henry M. Teller, a $60,000 structure…if the citizens would subscribe $10,000 cash towards purchasing the

ground. Three gentlemen canvassed the city and, in about three days, raised the money…

The furniture cost $20,000… the Senior partner and his estimable lady supervising arrangements throughout the building…The Parlors are perfect marvels of elegance…all sleeping rooms to the number of 90 are tastefully fitted with all essential conveniences…

The majority are without transoms…Guests may therefore lie down to peaceful slumbers undisturbed by apprehensions of getting their heads blown off or valuables lifted by burglars...”

Present were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Knoll and Dale; Donald Mattivi and family; Miss Kathryn Eccker and Mr. and Mrs. Carrol Barker of Rocky Flats.

Rollinsville Amalgam: Jimmy and Pat Collins of Denver were in Rollinsville and Central City on Saturday.

Accompanying them was their new little Sealyham Terrier named “Sam.” They visited Pat’s folks in Rollinsville and Jimmy’s in Black Hawk and Central City.

The latest developments are that the kidnappers of the Lindbergh Baby have been located, and a demand of $500,000 has been made by them for to return of the infant. The several parties who

have been named to make the deal are in touch with the kidnappers, but nothing has yet been completed, which would warrant the completion of the deal.

120 years ago April 4, 1902 Easter Sunday was a great day at the M.E. Church, the whole day being given over to missions, and the contributions to the missionary cause totaled $300. In the morning, the sacrament was administered, and Dr. Phifer delivered the sermon. In the evening the programme was given by the Sunday School and choir.

Mrs. Samuel Bostwick returned to Denver Saturday afternoon after being up to visit her mother, Mrs. Feehan, in Black Hawk, who had been on the sick list for a few days.

Mr. E. Manson, the feed and lumber dealer of Black Hawk,

left for Denver Saturday afternoon on a visit with his wife and daughter over Sunday.

Operations were suspended this week at the California and Hidden Treasure properties on Quartz Hill, which have been operated by the Patch Mining Company, and the properties were turned over on Tuesday to Mr. A.L. Collins, representing the English owners. Mr. Collins says he has notified the English owners, and he expects that arrangements will be made to hold the water in the mines and look to the early operations of the properties.

Our sense of community depended on those groups to some degree.

Once gaming arrived, some of the group spots began to disappear. A restaurant with more or less vacant space didn’t mind a coffee group. The local coffee drinkers might not be big spenders, but they were reliable. If you wanted to contact a certain person, you’d often begin at the restaurant where they had a regular coffee group.

One of these groups moved to midcounty at the gas station, one stuck it out at the store in Black Hawk. Most simply went away. No restaurant could dedicate space to coffee tables.

Every square foot was far more valuable as gaming space. There were big debates about what gaming space meant anyway. Did it include cabinets? How about the walls between devices? Arguments about space took up lots of time at the gaming commission. Like it or not, most coffee groups did not survive.

A community center gained A big gain for our sense of community was and is the community center.

While the old coffee groups didn’t survive, some members still greet each other at the community center. Teens now have a fairly safe spot to play games and socialize. Senior activities provide a busy calendar. Especially nice is the swimming pool—nothing like taking a swim class to develop a friendship. We have to thank gaming taxes for a really fine community center.

Another big change was available money for historic preservation. Those early gaming checks probably saved a dozen buildings.

151 years ago April 5, 1872 A festival was given in Black Hawk Friday evening by the M.E. Church, which netted them $440.12. Considerable interest was taken in the cake contest between Mrs. George Briggs and Miss Lena Grimes, the former having 633 and the latter 628 votes, this being a prize for the most beautiful lady. The vote for the homeliest man was to favor of Mr. Ives.

The main shaft on the Caribou Mine was down 275 feet, and the property was making daily shipments of between 30 and 40 tons of mineral.

Excavations were being made for the blast furnace for the Boston & Colorado Smelting Company in Black Hawk for the treatment of silver ores.

During the past three days, the company had paid out the sum of $8,000 for that class of ores from Clear Creek County.

The Congregational Church of this city gave a bazaar on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, at which the sum of $650 was raised.

Ghost buildings saved The Gilded Garter was a great spot for lunch. Their jalapeno burger was well known. Unfortunately, the building was about to become a ghost. The rear wall was obviously leaning out.

It looked like the end until the first gaming checks came in. A building crew was set up to replace the whole rear wall.

Apparently, the jiggling and jostling was too much. When the crew arrived the next morning, the wall was gone.

Only a whiff of dust remained. Over the next week, a scaffold was erected, and the second floor at least was kept intact. No doubt the new money saved that ancient watering hole.

It wasn’t the old Gilded Garter. No fancy girl would be lowering her derriere in black mesh stockings through that trap door above the bar. That was a thing of the past. On the other hand, there would often be some music like a country-western trio.

The tale of the Glory Hole The new gaming money did save several buildings. One of the most obvious is the Glory Hole. It had an elaborate iron front. It was quite interesting in design. Unfortunately, it was quite out of plumb too. The front doors leaned eight degrees to the side. As the front was rebuilt, the front doors were preserved, leaning to the side. It’s become a photo shot.

A topic that never grows old Was bringing gaming to Gilpin County worth it? That debate will never cease. I’d give gaming a plus overall. I wonder what readers think.

Fritz Peak Observatory Continued from page 1

The elevation of FPO and Dutch Peak were attractive to researchers because they could get away from light pollution and atmospheric pollution from larger communities, including Denver and Boulder. In approximately 1958, scientists from the University of Colorado began using the site to study the aurora borealis.

Dr. Eric Williams, a Deputy Director (Planning) at the Chemical Sciences Laboratory and Earth Systems Research Laboratories at NOAA’s Boulder division, previously told the Weekly RegisterCall that most upper atmospheric observations occurred during the wintertime. After a few winters, the scientists realized they needed a “base camp” due to the arduous conditions. The Commerce Department’s National Bureau of Standards purchased the nearby three-story building – now known as the Fritz Peak Observatory – in 1965.

The building enabled scientists to have a full-time research and staging area while allowing them to lodge overnight. No dome or large telescope was ever installed atop the building. FPO was primarily used as a laboratory to conduct scientific research on the Earth’s atmosphere in an effort to better understand and predict its behavior. Today, NOAA’s Chemical Sciences Laboratory (previously the Aeronomy Laboratory) research focuses primarily on several issues related to atmospheric chemical composition: climate, air quality, radiation and clouds.

The government observatory was the second life

for the building, which initially was built as the Severance Lodge

by Horace “Skip” Severance, a World War II veteran, and his wife Dorothy in 1946. A kitchen, gift shop, bar, and ballroom were on the ground floor. The ballroom area included a large brick fireplace. When Severance Lodge became a research facility, scientists and their associates ate at tables in the former ballroom. Next to the room was a stone staircase, which offered passage to the dormitorystyle rooms upstairs.

Scientists brought in various instruments and built wood and metal shops inside, where they created new equipment. One experiment included shooting different colors of laser beams from the building to conduct measurements.

The laser beams lit up the skies in part of the county.

Said Ondr, “We know that many people in the area have driven past the Observatory for years and wondered what it looks like inside.

Today, it is empty because the observation equipment has been removed, but it is still interesting to see! We are still learning about the history of the building and would appreciate any information that the community would like to share.”

Community Resource Day in Central City Five Organizations Coming Together

St. James is graciously opening their fellowship hall (lower level) for the event. St. James is an active church in the Central City and Gilpin community, helping people in need through funds raised by sales at the Ermel’s Thrift Shop just down the street. This is a natural extension of their community outreach program.

The Resource Days have been strategically timed to fall on the Wednesday immediately following the Food Bank of the Rockies truck delivery at Gold Mountain Village every third Tuesday of the month.

By David Josselyn Tamara Orndoff visited the Levitt Street Market in Central City in the summer of 2021 and fell in love with the town and, more importantly, the community. As she wandered among the stalls talking to the locals, she wondered what the County had to help people find the resources they needed in health care, food and nutrition, and other services.

As a Resource Outreach Coordinator for Benefits in Action, Orndoff is continually reaching out to make sure rural counties, like Gilpin County, are connected to important sources for healthy living.

Benefits in Action is a nonprofit in Lakewood that serves individuals across the state by increasing understanding and access to healthcare resources.

The organization was started

by Kim Powers, Jane Barnes and Debbie Showalter in 2015 when they realized that there were many Coloradoans in need of benefit assistance.

Since their inception, they have grown “exponentially” and serve more than 2,800 individuals providing navigation and application assistance for Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, Connect for Health Colorado and other programs.

Orndoff has worked her magic to bring together several organizations, including Kaiser Permanente, the Audio Information Network of Colorado, Gilpin Human Services and Martinez Mobile Dental, for a pilot program in Central City appropriately titled “Community Resource Day.” Together, they aim to equip people with what they need; each organization brings its own unique skillsets to the table.

Perhaps most exciting is that Martinez Mobile Dental of Lakewood will provide on-site basic dental care. General cleanings and exams and oral health education will be available at no cost. There are additional services for older adults over 60 if they qualify for the low-income dental program.

My work history uniquely qualifies me for Assessor. I moved from Chicago, hired as a comptroller for a new Chevrolet Dealership in Colorado Springs.

Over the next few years, I worked as comptroller and GM for other new car dealerships, overseeing budgets of over $13 million ($31 million in today’s economy), 50 employees, and 10 support staff. I was in the top 5 percent of the nation for GM comptrollers, leading the stores into the computer age and improving profitability.

After moving to Gilpin County, I joined others working in the casino business, eventually becoming Player Development Manager for Colorado Central Station/Isle Casino. I furthered my computer and people skills education, overseeing approximately 1800 VIPs accounts.

In 2006 I started my own Farmers Insurance Agency and earned four insurance licenses

and my security license. I ran a profitable business that allowed me to sell my agency in 2020. After the sale, I started a small independent insurance agency from my home and managed income properties in Colorado and Florida.

My insurance agency specialized in mountain properties, and I have inspected and insured many homes in this area. I am familiar with the differences between reconstruction value, appraisal value and market value in homes and I’m trained and experienced in calculating each of those.

As Assessor, I want to encourage more coordination between County departments and increase communications with the community. As Assessor, I will manage an efficient but customer-focused department that will be an integral part of the Gilpin County government.

Missouri Lakes 1 HOA approves fire-mitigation plan

A fire-mitigation plan will begin April 4 in Gilpin County’s Missouri Lakes 1 Homeowners Association (HOA), following weeks of discussion between the HOA Board, residents, Timberline Fire Protection District and the county’s Office of Emergency Management.

The project, expected to take up to two months, will include removing trees near the unpaved roads in the 87home development.

Timberline Fire Protection District Chief Paul Ondr said Monday that he has already talked with 30 residents about the potential tree and branch removals for their properties with talks with another 10 are planned for this week. During a three-hour meeting with HOA Board members and residents earlier in the month, Ondr promised to speak with each property owner about their trees that encroach on the county’s right-of-way for neighborhood roads. If the owners don’t want any trees removed, Timberline will abide by their decision.

Several HOA Board members had been pushing back against the project, claiming that removing trees would hurt the neighborhood’s aesthetics and result in a drop in property values. Ondr said residents might be unable to evacuate – in the event of a sudden wildfire – if trees are burning and potentially blocking the narrow roads. In addition, firetrucks might not be able to drive around tight bends because of trees too close to the streets.

Existing narrow, tree-lined roads could prevent residents from evacuating or allow firefighters to move equipment into the Missouri Lakes 1 neighborhood.

On Saturday, March 26, the HOA emailed a notice to residents, saying the association’s attorney determined the county has the jurisdiction to conduct the mitigation plan.

Four of the five HOA board members approved the idea on the condition that trees would not be removed without prior approval from each property owner.

“I’m ecstatic about the decision,” Ondr said this week. “I didn’t anticipate the hurdles that we ran into, but we’re going to work closely with each individual homeowner. Our plan is to make this mitigation program a model project for other neighborhoods in the county.”

In approving its 2022 budget in December, Gilpin

County authorized $25,000 for the fire-mitigation project, but the county commissioners didn’t decide the merits of the proposal. Ondr said county officials and the Missouri Lakes HOA still have a few related matters to resolve before the work begins.

By mid-May, most of the dead and diseased trees – along with potentially problematic branches – will be removed from the rights-ofway in the neighborhood. A woodchipper will arrive in Missouri Lakes 1 and be used for the felled trees. Neighbors will be permitted to have additional branches or trees chipped as part of the program should they have them removed from elsewhere on their properties.

Whittington, the county’s Emergency Operations Manager, previously said they want fire-mitigation programs expanded throughout Gilpin County to protect residents in an emergency. The majority of the county’s roads are narrow and unpaved, which can cause problems if evacuation orders are issued to a neighborhood.

Getting first-responders and their equipment into a community can be difficult if residents are evacuating the area simultaneously.

In February, Whittington and county leaders announced they were purchasing newlyavailable equipment, intended to give faster notification of a possible wildfire to first responders. The N5 sensors, developed by a Maryland company, are small box-sized

modules that will be mounted initially in six places around the county. Each sensor can detect heat or fires more than a half-mile away. Advanced algorithms in each module continuously monitor and detect air quality and heat changes. Alerts are sent to the company and designated Gilpin County authorities when significant changes are detected. A similar test of N5 technology also will occur in California this year.

Whittington said he hopes to obtain grants or other funding to purchase and install more than 150 N5 sensors in the future around Gilpin County, a 150-square-mile region made up primarily of forests.

“We want to get to a wildfire before it becomes a wildfire,” said Whittington. “In Gilpin County and the throughout the rest of Colorado, we’ve got to look at wildfire mitigation and wildfire prevention differently.

We’re always waiting to see a plume of smoke going into the air before we find the fire.

With this technology, the hope is that we can identify the fire, locate the fire and put that fire out before that plume of smoke even exists.”

A new wildfire that started several days ago near the National Center for Atmospheric Research in southern Boulder County, and the destructive Dec. 30 blaze in the towns of Louisville and Superior, Boulder County, have heightened public awareness of wildfire dangers recently. In an emergency, minutes can make the difference between life and death or a successful effort to prevent homes from catching on fire, according to Whittington.

New Gregory Street retail project moves ahead Coverage of the Black Hawk Council session on March 23

A new chapter is coming for Black Hawk’s long-vacant Eureka and Lucky Star casino buildings.

Black Hawk City Council approved a site development plan for the property at last week’s meeting. In May, remodeling is expected to begin to combine the two structures into one. The city will start pursuing new retail or commercial tenants for the remodeled building before work is completed late this year or early in 2023.

The plan, which was unanimously approved, finalized the concept for the two-story building. The council had given the original plan the green light in May 2020.

However, the project didn’t move ahead at that time because the Covid-19 pandemic arrived. A state-mandated, three-month closure of casinos resulted, in slashing income for Colorado’s three gaming communities, including Black Hawk. As a result, some city projects were delayed.

City officials said that the front of the long-vacant casino buildings would be remodeled to match other historical properties along Gregory Street in Black Hawk’s History Appreciation Recreation Destination (HARD) District. There will be a common entrance hall, including a new elevator and restrooms, in an enclosed common area between the two structures. The development plan for the 5,623 square foot structure includes having four retail/office spaces, two on each floor.

Last month, the council approved a $4 million bid to Palace Construction, which will renovate 221 Gregory Street and build a “Grand Staircase” just up the street.

The $800,000 custom staircase will enable pedestrians to walk past 221 Gregory

Street, the Green Solution dispensary and Skyline Properties real estate office building while heading to or from the new Gregory Plaza.

The remodeled Lucky StarEureka building is across from the closed Crook’s Palace restaurant and saloon at 200 Gregory St., which will become the new home for JKQ Barbecue and Grill later this spring.

Office hours Black Hawk’s main administrative offices will be closed on Fridays, beginning March 26. Staff members will work four 10-hour days Monday through Thursday, although some Friday hours may be available by appointment.

The change will not affect the police, fire and public works departments, many of which operate on a 24-hour or on-call basis.

City Manager Steve Cole said the change will benefit existing staffers and would be considered attractive for potential employees, many of whom would be required to travel from outlying counties to work in Black Hawk.

Liquor parking The Aldermen approved new parking-space rules for new distilleries, tasting rooms and distillery warehouses built atop Gregory Hill. The new regulations require one parking space for every 500 square feet of a distillery building, one for every 150 square feet for a tasting room and between one and three parking spots for a distillery warehouse measuring more than 4,000 square feet.

Baseline Engineering’s Vince Harris, a city consultant, said his firm studied parking regulations for similar operations in other communities, including Stranahan’s whiskey distillery in Denver.

Currently, construction of the Rick Thomas Distillery is underway on Gregory Hill.

It is expected to be the first of several alcohol-creating emporiums in Artisans’ Point, a neighborhood of craftbrewing operations. Artisans’ Point will be near the forthcoming Lake Gulch Whiskey Resort, a $50 million project slated for a 340-acre site.

Proximo Spirits, which owns Stranahan’s in Denver, plans to build Lake Gulch Whiskey Resort. The international spirits company hasn’t submitted final site development plans, yet that will require Black Hawk’s approval. The Proximo Black Hawk distillery operation on Gregory Hill, expected to be the largest distillery in the state, will be the home for its Tincup Whiskey brand operation.

Crook’s thumbs up The city’s Aldermen approved a resolution approving a “certificate of appropriateness” for exterior work proposed for Crook’s Palace by a unanimous vote.

The resolution confirmed a report from the city’s Historic Preservation Commission, which gave its nod to proposed alterations to the building during their March 15 session.

Last month, the city council approved a plan to install an awning and frosted glass panel

in the front of the building.

The additions would enable JKQ Barbecue to offer expanded outdoor patio seating to patrons. The Historic Preservation Commission said the proposed work would not remove or alter historic materials on the property. The changes could be removed sometime in the future without harming the original structure.

The commission further noted that the awning will look different from the original building but would allow visitors to continue to view both the historic and non-historic parts of the original structure.

Local businessman Tom Feeney suggested that some materials for the proposed patio should include stone veneer rather than metal. “I love the idea of the patio,” said Feeney, who owns a convenience and liquor store on Black Hawk Boulevard.

“I think stone would look so much better.”

The Crook’s Palace building received a Local Landmark Designation from the city in 2011. A 48”-by-33” bronze plaque, listing the history of Crook’s Palace, will be installed in the dining room area later this year, according to Mayor David Spellman.

New contract The Aldermen approved a new contract with Weecycle Environment Consulting of Lafayette. The consulting company will be paid up to $50,000 this year to provide the city’s testing and abatement consulting services.

Black Hawk previously hired the company to determine if there is any asbestos, radon, mold or lead-based paint on homes in the city.

Six of 22 eligible Black Hawk property owners applied for rebate funds to have their homes repainted this year. Work will occur sometime between June and late September. Rebate funds for the painting projects are provided to eligible historic homes. According to city literature, the city established the program in its budget many years ago to continue and enhance a “functional, sustainable, healthy, and vibrant residential community.” The City established a painting cycle for the homes, enabling each property owner the chance to have their house repainted periodically.

The City offers a palette of several colors from which owners can choose for their homes.

Vietnam War Veterans Day Commemoration

By Danny Tomlinson March 29 marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. The Clear Creek County Veterans Coalition, in partnership with Idaho Springs Elks Club #607, held a commemorative ceremony on Sunday, March 27, at the Elks Club. The mission was to thank all veterans for their service and sacrifice, especially those brave men and women who served our country in the Vietnam War. More than 50 veterans, family

members and friends helped us honor these heroes.

The Elks served a burgers and brats luncheon, and then the Veterans Coalition presented a brief program in the dining room of the Elks Club.

The 14 Vietnam War veterans in attendance received a Vietnam War Veteran Lapel Pin – “a lasting memento of the Nation’s thanks.” They each received a copy of the Presidential Proclamation designating March 29 of each year as National Vietnam War

Veterans Day. The ceremony was especially meaningful for these veterans to receive the thanks of their friends and neighbors, in contrast to the reception they received upon their return back in the 1960s and 1970s.

We spoke of the sacrifice that wives and families made during the Vietnam War and the 58,276 names carved in the Vietnam Wall – those killed during the Vietnam War or are still missing in action. The total includes eight women

killed in the war.

The Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Census Bureau numbers indicate that those 6.4 million living Vietnam veterans are equal to one in every eight Americans 65 years and older. When you consider just men that age, it’s one in every three.

An anonymous writer once asked, “What is a Veteran?

A “Veteran” – whether active duty, discharged, retired or reserve – is someone who, at one point

in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his or her life.”

That is an honor. And there are far too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Brewmaster gives Central City a reason to say “Cheers!”

When he walks into the bar, no one shouts “Bruce!” to greet him.

Meet Mr. Schmalz, best known as Buddy. Not even his mother calls him by his given first name.

It’s well known around the region that Buddy Schmalz loves his family and serving various community efforts around Central City, where he’s lived since childhood. His passion, however, is brewing beer at the family business, Dostal Alley Brewpub, Casino and Restaurant in Central City.

“It’s more exciting to me now than it was over 20 years ago,” said Schmalz. “I still have a hard time sleeping the night before a brewing day, anticipating the excitement.”

Dostal Alley was just another small casino along Main Street after limited gaming arrived in Central City and Black Hawk in the early 1990s. Because micro-brewed beers were becoming popular around the county, Schmalz figured that starting a brewing business would give Dostal Alley a competitive edge that would differentiate it from other local casinos.

In 1998, it was decided that Dostal Alley would get into the beer-making business. The problem, however, was that Schmalz didn’t know much about the subject. One bartender who worked at Dostal Alley had done some home brewing, which gave Schmalz a few pointers. It wasn’t until he grew a friendship with Dave Thomas that things took off. Thomas, who had spent decades as one of the top brewers at the Coors factory in Golden, collaborated with Schmalz to help create some custom beers at Dostal Alley.

“I was very, very fortunate to have good friends in the brewing business who helped me. After Dave retired from Coors, he wanted to stay in the beer business,” said Schmalz of Thomas, who wrote a book about the history of beers and brewing in Gilpin County.

At first, the locals who stopped at the bar at Dostal Alley weren’t keen on the idea. “Most of our customers were older. They wanted their traditional beers: Bud Lights, Schlitz and Coors. It took a while for our beers to catch on.”

Schmalz’ efforts to get into brewing paid off in 2001 when Dostal Alley’s Pub Ale won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival. The barely-known local operation won out over other entries at the festival, attracting tens of thousands of brewers and beer drinkers to Denver annually.

The success didn’t stop. Dostal Alley won four more GABF medals for its Shaft House Stout and Pub Ale in the years that followed.

Today, there typically are five different, locally-created beers on tap at Dostal Alley. They also sell growlers (64-ounce glass bottles), crowlers (32 oz. cans) and 22-ounce bottles to go. The varieties of beer also change throughout the year.

The Summer Wheat brew is available in spring and early summer. During the winter, SnowLine Winter Ale arrived.

Central Haze (named in honor of Central City) is a spring tradition, and Pumpkin Porter shows up before Thanksgiving.

“The quality of the beer is my highest priority,” said Schmalz, who has developed more than 50 styles of beer over the years. “Some are a one-time thing. We are constantly trying to define what we sell.” Those crafting experiments have included barrelaging some products to create new tastes in recent years.

One beer you won’t find these days is Colonel Selak’s Amber Ale, which Schmalz brewed and bottled one time exclusively for Black Hawk’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2014. (Selak Street is the location for Black Hawk’s city offices.) “It was a great project for us to do. I glued on each label by hand,” recalled Schmalz, who has been friends with Black Hawk Mayor David Spellman since they were kids.

Schmalz said using the combination of the right ingredients is the key to making good beer. The primary ingredients include water, malt (malted grains), yeast and hops.

hand-picked hops from around Central City for use in the Jacob Mack beer, which tends to sell out quickly.

While grain prices and other ingredients have been subject to inflation, Schmalz said beer prices haven’t risen.

“Grain prices have increased 10 percent this year, but we aren’t planning to pass along those increases to customers,” he noted.

It takes between four and five gallons of water to create a one-bottle gallon of beer. One of the reasons Dostal Alley’s beers are good, he said, is because of the water in Central City, which comes from the city’s mountain reservoir. “It is first-use water. No human lips have touched it before,” said Schmalz. He also considers water a precious resource.

“I’m very water-conscious. We recycle a lot of the water we

use for other purposes. I don’t want water to just go down the drain.”

When water – and other things – get into the sewers in Central City, Schmalz is there.

He is one of five board members on the Black Hawk-Central City Sanitation District, the local agency that collects and treats wastewater. Spellman is chairman of the group.

Schmalz also has been a board member on the Gilpin Ambulance Authority, which provides medical assistance to Gilpin County residents. He served as Central City’s mayor – following in his father’s footsteps – for six years before being elected to the Gilpin County Board of Commissioners for eight. He’s also served as the junior varsity boys’ basketball coach at Gilpin County High School and has been involved with other youth

sports activities.

While working at Dostal Alley, Schmalz hears lots of local stories and gossip about the area. Occasionally, he catches “a little grief” because the last bottle or keg of a specialty beer sells out.

Because of limited space in the building, there isn’t room to expand the brewing part of the business. “It’s not on the table,” he commented. Most of Dostal Alley’s beers are available only in the bar. However, a few of the custom beers are sold at the Base Camp convenience store in mid-county, Annie’s liquor/ convenience store in Central City, and at the White Buffalo Grille in the Lodge Casino, Black Hawk.

Schmalz’ parents, Sandy and (the late) Bruce Schmalz, converted their rock shop and souvenir storeroom into presentday Dostal Alley after gaming arrived. Bruce Sr., once Central City’s mayor, former Black Hawk Mayor Bill Lorenz and others were the driving forces behind the movement to allow limited gaming in three old, former mountain mining towns – Central City, Black Hawk and Cripple Creek.

The Schmalz’ children, Lisa, CinDee and Buddy, eventually took over the family business and continue to run it today. Lisa, who is married to Steve Boulter, serves as the general manager, while CinDee Schmalz Spellman handles the accounting and audit information. (Steve Boulter was president of the Gilpin County RE-1 School Board for years and works at Dostal Alley, too. CinDee’s late husband, Mark, is the brother of David Spellman).

Buddy Schmalz and his wife, Gwen, are the parents of Rachel and Ty, who are college graduates who also have worked in the family business.

Buddy Schmalz isn’t thinking about retirement or giving up his community involvement. He’d rather concentrate on whipping up more possibilities for new beers. “It’s a very physical process. As I get older, the kegs don’t get any lighter,” he said, smiling.

Addiction nation Addictions are a personal challenge, a familial hardship, a workplace issue, a community concern, and a national tragedy. Addiction is on the rise. According to the CDC, over 81,000 people died from drug overdoses in one year. This is alarming as it is the highest number of overdose deaths ever recorded. The increasing mental health issues, violence, homelessness, crime, isolation, depression, and suicide associated with addiction is shocking. It is beyond disturbing that adolescents are getting addicted earlier and earlier in their young lives.

Why do individuals become addicted? The answer is highly complex. Adverse childhood experiences, hardships, lack of coping skills, lack of relationship or communication skills, disconnection, unhappiness, disappointment, abandonment, overwhelming obstacles, lack of hope and the list goes on.

Johann Hari, an expert on addiction, states that the only reliable treatment for addiction is connection.

In his book, Chasing the Scream: The Search for Truth About Addiction, Hari outlines the data about the importance of closeness, attachment, bonding, support, positive relationships and social connections.

Additionally, societies that are community-minded, unified, share food, traditions, music, language and passions have the highest longevity rate regarding life expectancy.

Another expert in the field of addiction experimented with rats. He had rats living alone in one rat cage with no rotation wheels, toys, plants, or color. These rats chose to drink pure water or water laced with heroin.

The solo rats preferred the drug-ridden water, and most of them died from an overdose of heroin. Dr. Bruce

Alexander also set up a rat cage with toys, colors, wheel platforms and other rats to befriend. The choice was the same, pure water or water laced with heroin. These social rats avoided the drug water and chose pure water instead.

This study and others like it highlight that social connection is the key.

One can cultivate social connections with a prosocial tribe. This is a healthy way to overcome any kind of addiction, whether drugs, alcohol, gambling, pornography, food, or shopping.

One must find people and meet up groups that have common interests. Things like bowling, painting, concert-going, sports, cooking classes, fitness groups, faith-based groups, Bible studies, political affiliations, and book clubs are great ways to be surrounded by like-minded people.

Those who care for an addicted individual need to be the one to help build this community. Many times, the addicted individual does not have the bandwidth to do so.

Preventing addiction should be a call to action for our nation. Teaching the next generation coping skills, building assets and resiliency, empowering adolescents with self-regulation and decision-making capabilities and strategies, teaching relationship and life skills, and assisting young people in building their prosocial tribe and training youth to protect their delicate and developing brain from substances that would affect the growth process, particularly around the pre-frontal cortex which is where decisions and executive cognitive functioning are stored. age 50, along with people who have weakened immune systems. But you can’t catch shingles from someone else.

Early signs of the disease include pain, itching or tingling before a blistering rash appears several days later, and can last up to four weeks. The rash typically occurs on one side of the body, often as a band of blisters that extends from the middle of your back around to the breastbone.

It can also appear above an eye or on the side of the face or neck.

In addition to the rash, about 20 to 25 percent of those who get shingles go on to develop severe nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN) that can last for months or even years. And in rare cases, shingles can also cause strokes, encephalitis, spinal cord damage and vision loss.

Shingles Vaccine The vaccine for shingles called Shingrix (see Shingrix.com) provides much better protection than the old shingles vaccine, Zostavax.

Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Shingrix is 97 percent effective in preventing shingles in people 50 to 69 years old, and 91 percent effective in those 70 and older.

Shingrix also does a terrific job of preventing nerve pain that continues after a shingles rash has cleared – about 90 percent effective.

Because of this protection, the CDC recommends that everyone age 50 and older, receive the Shingrix vaccine, which is given in two doses, separated by two to six months.

Even if you’ve already had shingles, you still need these vaccinations because reoccurring cases are possible. The CDC also recommends that anyone previously vaccinated with Zostavax be revaccinated with Shingrix.

You should also know that Shingrix can cause some adverse side effects for some people, including muscle pain, fatigue, headache, fever and upset stomach.

Shingrix – which averages around $205 for both doses – is covered by most private health insurance plans including Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, but there may be a cost to you depending on your plan.

Sandwiched between the blockbuster The Batman and the drama of the Academy Awards, Paramount Pictures released a comedy adventure titled The Lost City starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum.

The film was shot midpandemic wholly in the Dominican Republic, well isolated from the chaos of the world, which gives the movie a realism in location and limits the amount of CGI used, instead of getting incredible backdrops of a tropical paradise. Rotten Tomatoes currently has an audience score of 86 percent, but is it really up to the hype?

The plot Loretta, played by Sandra Bullock (Miss Congeniality, The Proposal), is a reclusive romance writer who has lost her passion for the fan-favorite heroine, Angela, and her adventures with Dash. Loretta’s book covers feature the Fabio-esque model Alan, played by Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, Foxcatcher), and they go on book tours together. Loretta’s latest Angela and Dash novel features an exotic adventure trying to find the scarlet crown worn by the princess of the lost city of D (the native name for the city which is many syllables long and I am unable to find in today’s Google searches) and the book has caught the unwanted attention of treasure seeker Abigail Fairfax, played by Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter movie series, Now You See Me 2). Fairfax kidnaps Loretta believing she knows the location of the Lost City, and Alan, wanting to prove he can live up to his book character’s fame, goes on the hunt to rescue Lorette, whom he secretly loves.

The movie is mostly devoid of adult content in terms of language. Even the violence is comedic mainly (except for one shockingly gory scene); however, there is a prolonged nude shot that starts appropriately but remains unnecessarily long on the same image.

We get it, know what’s happening, the joke happened, and don’t need to keep seeing it.

Finally, there is really no redeeming takeaway from the movie. Sure, it’s a comedy and doesn’t really need one, but if there were some impactful statement on culture, society, humanity, love, whatever, it would have elevated the movie into an exceptional comedy.

In summary The Lost City is full of visual and audio gags that will get you laughing.

This movie does them well, whether you are into the raunchy double-entendres, the witty wordplay, or the vaudevillian physical gags. What it doesn’t do well is bring the romance. Unfortunately, there was little chemistry between the co-stars and the relationship seemed forced. Nevertheless, this is a tremendous check-your-brain-atthe-door kind of comedic entertainment that would be a good distraction for a couple of hours. It is rated PG-13 for violence, some (one) bloody images, suggestive material, partial nudity and language. I saw the film with friends, and on a scale of five, my friend Katy rated it four on-loan purple sequin jumpsuits, and my friend Abby rated it four and half butt leeches. My lovely wife rated it four and a quarter “not bad.” I rate it four red shells.

Now, back to the original premise that I accept my body’s “new” aches and pains that accompany the aging process. They certainly serve to separate life from death. In death, we feel no pain. I once took my dearest canine pet to be put down at the veterinary hospital. She was very old, and in acute pain, and while feeling the pain, she never stopped loving and believing I would save her. Before the vet could give her the fatal injection, I held her in my arms, and she looked up at me and died all on her own.

Her pain suddenly ceased, and so did mine. I put her down on the table, closed her eyelids, and felt an ocean of relief that she was finally no longer hurt. As her pain stopped with her death, so did my tears.

You can go along for days, weeks, even months and years, taking health for granted, until something happens and you become under the weather. All of a sudden, your body reminds you that it’s alive. If you embrace the fact that you hurt, for whatever reason or reasons, and accept it as a condition of life, you should realize that it’s a good thing. That goes for emotional as well as physical ailments. I’m sure you remember the well-known dictum of Rene Descartes, “Cogito, ergo sum,” or “I think, therefore I am.” This could have been the source of the French substitute teacher’s personal philosophy on pain. To paraphrase, “To be aware is to be alive.” Or, “To hurt is life.” Pain causes us to be conscious of our body and our mind. Although it shouldn’t make us happy to hurt, it should give us a sense of being or existence that is absent when we’re “feeling no pain.”

As an old man, I’ve concluded that my body is showing signs of wear and tear that I have never experienced before. I’ve got new aches and pains that don’t seem to ever really go away, but along with them has come a strange sense of acceptance.

Once in high school, when my French teacher, Miss Valente, was out sick for a few days, there was a substitute teacher. I remember nothing about him except the one thing worth remembering.

Interestingly he was filling in for someone who was ill, yet he was not feeling good. In fact, he had a toothache. I’ll never forget how he related to the class that he was in pain, but he didn’t mind because he said, “It makes me feel alive.” That one statement has stayed with me for around 60 years, through thick and thin and through minor and sometimes major ailments.

2022 Toyota Highlander Platinum is well named

Toyota’s mantra is “Let’s Go Places” and the 2022 Highlander platinum allwheel drive made a test drive into Nebraska this week fighting fierce winds along U.S. 80.

The V6/ 295 hp. engine and eight-speed versatile transmission made for plenty of power, speed and comfort in the seven-passenger Highlander with the windy weather.

There are three driving modes, sport, eco, and normal, and for the drive the eco produced an amazing 30 mpg highway mileage. The radar cruise control worked perfect following the many trucks that travel on U.S. 80 and the radar feature automatically flowed the Highlander with

the cars and trucks.

The leather trimmed captain seats were soft and comfortable with great leg room in the spacious cabin. The JBL ll/ sound system with subwoofer and amplifier provided clear and continuous Sirius XM music and news channels. The UBS outlets and charging ports kept the cell phone on full power for

the duration of the trip.

The larger size Highlander gives the driver and passenger the feeling of height and safety along the busy highway, and the vehicle boasts a perfect overall 5-star safety rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Road sign alerts were continually posted on the windshield to obey changing speed limits.

The dark “Blueprint” metallic finish paint shimmers in the sunlight on the attractive body style of one of Toyota major allwheel drive popular SUVs. The platinum model is loaded with navigation and safety features that add to the drive with lane departure warn-
