U kraine President Volodymyr Z elenskyy, if he can live through this nightmare, is a likely winner for the Nobel Peace Prize. His courage has earned the honor with his bravery and taking to the streets to fi ht ith his people rather than eein the country.

U krainians have a population of 40 million and tho sands have ed into neighboring states, all members of NATO. This is creating an immigration challenge for neighboring countries that seem to be

welcoming the war refugees. Many U krainian citizens may be granted asylum in the U nited States, and some reach Colorado.

If the peace talks fail, the invasion will be grinding onward, and many more casualties will result and massive deaths and destruction of the country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has miscalculated the bravery and national pride of U krainians and their love for freedom and a democratic system of government, unlike communist Russia.

It is a sad state of affairs for the world, a tragedy for U kraine and crippling decision and economic isolation for Russia. This ar creates financial p nishment for the Russian people who already toil and suffer under the yoke of a communist regime.

Thousands of Russians are protesting this ar in ma or cit streets and to ns across Russia. The late J ohn McCain described Russia as a “gas station” for the world.

Russia is now shipping oil to the U nited States, where our energy independence has been decimated under the present administration.

While watching the news channels, there is considerable coverage of the citien vol nteer fi hters t almost from the military forces. I failed to see any generals or spo espeople for the arm t st overnment officials o do t the re lar arm forces are fi htin at the orders but they must have a very silent command center, at least for western news sources.

Strangely, the Russians have not destroyed mass communication, railroads, and water and power plants. Gilpin County taps Central City’s Ray Rears as new manager

Ray Rears is the new manager for Gilpin County. He was hired by the Gilpin County Board of Commissioners’ meeting on Tuesday by a unanimous vote.

It was a “Back to the Future” moment for Rears, 44, who worked in Gilpin County’s Community Development department for 11 years before leaving to become Central City’s director of community development and historic preservation in 2017.

During his previous work for the county, Rears also served as the county planner and historic advisory liaison.

“I am absolutely thrilled for this opportunity,” Rears told the BOCC. “I’m really excited to get started.” He will start his new position on Monday, March 7. A “meet and greet” for Rears will be held on March 8 at 11 a.m. in the old courthouse in Central City.

Commissioner Linda Isenhart noted, “This is a happy day for the county,” regarding the hiring of Rears, who was among eight candidates for the manager’s post. Added Commissioner Web Sill, “Ray has a great deal of experience in Gilpin County. He’s what we’ve been looking for. He will be a fabulous addition.”

The position of Gilpin County manager had been something of a revolving door since the departure of longtime manager Roger Baker, who held the post from 2003-17 before his retirement.

After leaving, Leslie K lusmire was hired to be the Gilpin County manager in 2017. However, she was removed from her post in April 2018 by the BOCC. The W eekly Register-C all reported at the time that after much deliberation, the BOCC agreed that K lusmire’s management style “was inconsistent with its goals and it o ld enefit the co nt and its employees to relieve her of her responsibilities.”

Later, the commissioners hired Abel Montoya, who departed suddenly last J uly to accept a position with nearby J efferson County in its development and transportation department. Since then, County Attorney Brad Ben-

ning and the three commissioners t o of hom too office in 2021 – ha ve stepped in the handle some of the manager’s duties.

Rears, who was working for Central City during all the count mana er sh f es last ear received a Master of Public Administration degree, with honors, as part of the executive program with the U niversity of ColoradoDenver campus. Between his first stint ith ilpin o nt and Central City, Rears has spent 18 years of his professional life serving businesses and residents in the area.

At Central City, Rears ran one of the largest departments in the city, offering various programs and community efforts in addition to a staff of seven. The department’s budget has ranged from $1.5 to $4.1 million during his tenure. In addition, Rears has served on Central City’s Belvidere Foundation Board of Directors a non-profit that is tr in to

restore the former theater that is at the corner of Nevada and Main streets.

Rears grew up in J efferson o nt a fifth- eneration oloradoan and attended Arvada West High School. He attended the U niversity of Northern Colorado and received a Bachelor’s degree in applied geography with a minor in history.

Before Montoya, K lusmire was the county manager. In April 2018, the commissioners put K lusmire on paid administrative leave and relieved her of any further responsibility for county management.

Rears, the same as Baker, has been in Gilpin County for decades. Baker had worked in the county for 30 years, starting with his first position as a li rarian and later working at several positions in Black Hawk.

He and his wife, J anisse, have been married almost 20 years, and have three children; Isabella, Alex, and Sophia.

County places 90-day moratorium on short-term rentals

A 90-day moratorium on new short-term rental property applications will begin on Monday in Gilpin County.

During the freeze on Short-Term Rentals (STRs), the county will seek to modify its regulations and fees while also allowing its staff to catch up on inspections, code enforcement and paperwork related to the 131 known STRs operating in Gilpin County.

S s have ecome a si nificant iss e in Colorado’s mountain communities the past years, including Gilpin County. County ode nforcement Officer April ielsen told the Board of County Commissioners that there is a backlog of paperwork related to the STRs, which requires about 75 percent of the staff’s time to handle. The workload is causing the planning and code enforcement staff to put other unrelated matters “on the back burner” while it is trying to catch up.

The BOCC, by a 2-1 vote, decided to impose the 90-day moratorium with Commissioners Sandy Hollingsworth and Linda Isenhart voting for the approval. Commissioner Web Sill voted no, citing he doesn’t want to cause a negative impact for Gilpin County residents who currently own and operate a short-term rental.

According to the county, 69 percent of short-term rental properties are owned by people or companies who live outside Gilpin County. STR regulations, imposed a year ago in Gilpin County, require property owners to pay a $200 annual permit fee, which has raised an estimated $18,400 in fees.

Chair Hollingsworth said the subject of S s has ca sed si nificant disc ssion Some residents who operate short-term rentals use the fees they charge visitors to help supplement their incomes. On the opposite side of the issue, other county residents complain a o t noise par in potential fire danger and other negative impacts from the rentals.

Isenhart noted that other counties, including neighboring Clear Creek County, has limited the number of short-term rentals that can operate there. Other counties have different rules, including designating zoning that permits STRs and requirements that the property owner must live in part of the rental space. “There are a lot of approaches,” she said.

The commissioners said future discussions may include whether Gilpin County can substantially raise the cost of a permit fee for out-of-county rental owners.

Sill expressed concern that the moratorium could potentially harm residents who operate short-term rentals. However,

Nielsen said not all Gilpin County STR owners act responsibly.

Isenhart said several problems have been determined with certain rental properties.

They include a potential lack of well-water at the site, overloading septic systems and parties who advertise their properties for more renters than what the STRs can accommodate. Added Hollingworth, “It’s getting out of hand.”

The moratorium isn’t expected to impact existing STR owners, many of which will need to renew their permits during the next 90 days. Dominion has been used to handle the allot-certification process for the co nt for several years. The second check by Clear Ballot will help ensure accurate vote counts in 2022, when several key state, county and local races will be on the ballot.

According to McCormick, about 3,425 of Gilpin County’s estimated 4,900 regis-

tered voters cast ballot during the 2018 midterm elections, compared to the 4,240 votes cast during last year’s presidential election.

ballot-tabulation company “will let voters know that the results are accurate,” McCormick said.

Missouri Lakes residents torch fire-mitigation plan

Maybe it was a lack of communication. Perhaps it was “too short of a notice.” But whatever the reason a plan to start a firemitigation program in the Missouri a es HOA to ched off a firestorm of responses at the Gilpin County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday.

In cooperation with the Gilpin o nt Office of mer enc Management, Timberline Fire Protection District announced plans to start a fire-miti ation pro ram in the homeowners’ association shortly. A meeting was scheduled to be held last night (Wednesday) et een representatives of the fire district and the HOA. During Tuesday’s BOCC meeting, several residents and Missouri

Lakes HOA board members denounced the plan, criticizing efforts to remove trees from around their nei h orhood a move that firemen said would help reduce potential dama e if a forest fire occ rred Bill Merline, a resident and Missouri Lakes HOA board member, offered some of the most amin criticism. “We came here to live in a forest, not a city park. Without trees, Gilpin County would be a wasteland.”

Commission Chair Sandy Hollingworth said the plan “is a starting point to have a discussion.” a l Ondr im erline fire chief and Nathan Whittington, Gilpin County’s emergency management director, said the county wants to develop ways to ensure improved ingress and egress for residents if an evacuation is needed.

Hollingsworth said misinformation about topics – including the subject of a discussion on shortterm rentals last month – tends to spread quickly. “When misinformation gets out, it takes on a life of its own.”

Whittington said he wants to work with the community and the commissioners to develop plans to help residents plan for any potential evacuation. “We are open to any suggestions. I want the community’s input,” he said, noting that if Missouri Lakes residents don’t want a program, it could be offered to other neighborhoods in Gilpin County.

Rural Gilpin County, which measures about 150 square miles, includes parts of two national forests – Roosevelt and Apapaho – plus Golden Gates Canyon State Park. The heavily-forested areas are beautiful but involve concerns, too, according to Chair Hollingsworth.

Black Hawk unveils new, interactive city map online

Access to the map is on the front pa e of the cit s website, www.cityofblackhawk.org. A symbol, labeled “maps,” is the access point to a multi-layered map that should answer many questions about the city for residents, developers and the curious. It also may delight geeky maplovers, too.

The interactive menu enables a viewer to click and view many things about the city, including the locations of bus stops and routes, casinos, bike routes, trails, mining claims, zoning districts, special districts, growth areas and more.

Wenzel announces candidacy for county commissioner This week, Rick Wenzel has announced his candidac for ilpin o nt ommissioner for District 2.

The Navy veteran has lived in olorado for nearl ears and ilpin o nt for almost

ears D rin those ears he has been involved with olorado Sierra ire rotection District and im erline ire rotection District D for over ears starting as a volunteer firefi hter et een and 2012. Then in 2008,

he served on the Board of Directors of olorado Sierra, including being vice president.

Shortl after oinin the oard olorado Sierra ire and Hi h o ntr ire began talking about merging the two districts into the Timberline Fire Authority. He became president of the board for the next three years and another two years as vice president.

Thinking the board was in good hands, Wenzel decided not to run again.

transit service, coordinated rural broadband access, and electric vehicle charging stations — that support the ways travel can and will change in the future. It also includes new air quality monitors and provides a redundant route for when natural disasters disrupt highway travel.” As a transit option, “In J uly of 2021, CDOT allocated $2 million to initiate a new transit shuttle service along I-70 as Bustang Pegasus… Pegasus will operate frequent departures between the Denver Metro area, Summit, and Eagle Counties and utilize the new Express

Lane constructed as part of the Floyd Hill Project. Pegasus… is designed to reduce traffic during the Floyd Hill construction period and peak weekend leisure travel.”

Bennet also noted that Colorado will receive $6 billion overall from the federal infrastructure bill. Buttigieg pointed to the nexus of transportation and climate change, saying, “Transportation is the single largest contributor of greenhouse gases in the U .S. economy and one of many reasons why we need to make sure transportation is a big part of the solution.”

Within the $1 trillion infra-

structure bill, $7.5 billion is allocated explicitly to electric vehicle infrastructure nationwide, which essentially means charging stations. Buttigieg explained that plentiful charging stations around the U .S. will give Americans the confidence to p rchase electric vehicles, knowing they will be able to charge them as needed.

The more electric vehicles there are on U .S. roads, the fewer gas-powered cars, leading to less

greenhouse gases that add to the climate change problem.

Ensslin, Rocky Mountain News, October 22, 1986) If they dig deep enough into their pockets, Central City residents may be able to turn what some local rail buffs dubbed a train robbery into a refurbished round trip. Residents of the small mining town were up in arms Friday when the Colorado Historical Society tried to move Old No. 71 from the hillside where it has resided since 1942. Despite a 40-auto effort to loc the at- ed tr c carrying the train, there wasn’t much the residents could do. The train wasn’t theirs.

But under an agreement reached between the city council and the historical society Monday, residents will get a chance to convert their sentimental attachment to the 90-year-old narrow gauge engine into actual ownership. The agreement gives the town 30 days to come up with a plan to raise the $25,000 the society paid for the train plus transportation costs of roughly $5,000, said Barbara Sudler,

president of the historical society.

Meanwhile, the society will refurbish the engine and the three cars in Central City and at its Georgetown Loop and Historic Mining and Railroad Park in Silver Plume – at no cost to Central City. “It’s in bad shape,” Sudler said, citing damage done to the train by weather and vandalism. “It really needs some tender loving care.”

The society bought the train from the Central City Opera House Association as rolling stock on the Georgetown Loop. When steamed up, residents ral-

lied around the train; the society reconsidered its plan.

Sudler said there “were no hard-edged fi res on how long the residents had to raise money but said six to 12 months would be a reasonable amount of time. “At this point, the city council is dedicated to the effort through private fundraising,” said city spokeswoman Patricia Wendleton. No public funds will be used to buy the train, she added.

But Old No. s fans are confident the can raise the cash. “The phone’s been ringing off the hook,” said Angelo Di Benedetto, a Central City artist who led the blockade.

“People have been calling wanting to know where to send their checks.”

DiBenedetto said fundraising events will include a jazz festival and a contest to write lyrics for a song to the tune of C hattanooga C hoo C hoo but with a Central City theme.

The Gold Country Actual Past Masters Assemblage had a fantastic gathering on February 26 at the Idaho Springs Lodge #26 Masonic Temple. Nearly 70 Worshipful Brothers (Masters of their respective Masonic lodges) from across the state gathered for a wonderful barbecue dinner prepared by our great friends Joe & Kara Tinucci at JKQ in Central City. The Brothers then went upstairs to the Lodge room and the 28 candidates received the Actual Past Masters Degree. This is an important part of a man’s Masonic journey as he moves into the leadership of his Lodge.

It was a great evening of Masonic fellowship and brotherhood.

A life well lived Peak to Peak Rotary dignitaries

By Tim Richard If you follow men’s college basketball you know we are a mere two weeks from the start of March Madness, when the best college teams play to win the top NCAA honor. Since 1939 when this famous tournament began, North Carolina has won the top title six times, and K entucky has won eight times, however, the university which has won this honor the most times is U CLA. The Bruins have wound up on top an amazing 11 times.

What makes this number particularly astonishing is that 10 of those wins came under one coach, the legendary J ohn Wooden. To put this in perspective, the second most winning college basketball coach has won exactly half that number.

During one streak, U CLA won 88 games in a row. From 19671973, U CLA won 205 games and lost onl five he on the AA championship seven years in a row, a feat no other college basketball team in history has ever come close to achieving.

What makes Wooden most impressive is that he taught his players more than basketball, he taught them how to live well. Throughout his life players repeatedly called to thank him for his impact and ask for his advice. Arguably, Wooden’s most famous player is K areem Abdul-J abbar who, in 2017 released his New York Times bestseller, Coach Wooden and Me: Our 50Year Friendship On and Off the Court. An incredible tribute to the man he credits with having a pro-

fo nd in ence oth on his as etball career, and more importantly on his life.

How did J ohn Wooden make such an enormous difference in his player’s lives? What was the source of his incredible impact? When author J ames Bryan Smith interviewed him in 2006, shortly before the great coach’s death, Smith asked him the secret of his life, Wooden told him, “I made up my mind in 1935 to live by a set of principles, and I never wavered from them.

They are based on the Bible and the teachings of J esus. Principles like courage and honesty and hard work, character and loyalty, and virtue and honor— these are what constitute a good life.”

Could it be that the primary reason Wooden was so successful both on and off the basketball court was that he chose to live his life with a higher calling? Yes! Consider the challenge J esus gave near the beginning of The Sermon on the Mount, when he said, “… let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:16, NLT) Doing the right thing not only makes our lives better, but it also helps others discover the difference God can make in theirs. Very few will ever be a coaching legend, but each of us can help others by consistently following J esus like Wooden did. We may never know the impact that kind of life will have on others, but the chances are it will be more profound than we imagine.

Time for Butter we met.

“That’s right,” Peter said.

“Time passes too quickly! ” He is always saying that.

He also says that, while he doesn’t know how much time we’ll have together, he knows it will not be enough. (Peter is a romantic. There’s no denying it.)

We are traveling in Mexico now. My temporary desk is set up against a window.

I can see the progress on the house next door, which is acquiring a new story.

I can see the spires of the churches in the distance. I can hear the traffic of cars going by, which seems unnaturally loud as they travel over cobblestones and the sounds of the roosters and the dogs, who always seem to have something urgent to

“I don’t have time for butter! ” he insisted. I never knew how much time butter took, but apparently, it was more than U ncle J ohn could spare.

Time passes so often without notice. A day seems to pass in the time it takes to butter a piece of bread. Last night, my husband, Peter, said that we met seven years ago.

We will celebrate our seventh wedding anniversary next month and, while the romance was quick, we had known one another for a year. We married on the first anniversar of the da

My days blend into one another, and, before I know it, it is afternoon, and I am taking my daily walk through the streets of this Mexican city, seeing something that surprises me—e very single afternoon—s aying hello to several dozen friendly strangers and greeting their dogs.

The weather has been cool.

But when I think back on a year ago today, time did slow down for a while.

Peter and I stayed at home, and the only people we saw were Peter’s sister, Lori, and her husband. Every week, Peter cooked, and I read, and time seemed to slow to a stop. There was no pressure to do more— there was nothing more we could do. And so, we talked until Lori was tired and, a few days later, we did it again. Lori died later in the year.

Now that time has resumed its normal pace. It’s good to be traveling and seeing friends and family again. But sometimes, it feels as if I’ve forgotten something important about the time that just passed.

Often it seems to me that there was a lesson in that time that I could use now, as m calendar fills Because the time that just passed was not like the time that came before or the time after, time took time off for a while. For a while, I had time for butter.

Not the updates on baseball negotiations or speculation about the March Madness bracket and which teams are “on the bubble,” as they say; I’m talking stories about some of the biggest names in their respective sports— headlines like these: “Phil Mickelson offers apology for Super Golf League comments ...”

“Michigan men’s basketball coach J uwan Howard suspended for rest of Wolverines’ regular season ...”

“You can fail and not be a failure, Miaela Shiffrin re ects “Aaron Rodgers’ go-to cleanse would involve oily enemas, bloodletting, vomiting . . .”

“It was reckless. I offended people.

And I am deeply sorry for my choice of words,” tweeted Mickelson in an unsuccessful attempt to undo what he’d done when he described the Saudis as “scary” but said he was looking past their poor human rights history to use the breakaway golf league they’re sponsoring to gain leverage with the PGA Tour. My reaction to all of these stories was almost startling. I realized that no matter how much money, glory or fame prominent athletes and coaches who are former athletes—s tars, all—a ccrue, in the end, they’re just human beings, like the rest of us.

And that means they’re susceptible to the ran e of foi les a s and missteps that all other mortals (fans) deal with along the path of life.

Making a spectacle of myself at the eyeglass store

By Dorothy Rosby I recently found myself in an eyeglass store, surrounded by hundreds of shiny new frames with vacant stares. I’m sure there weren’t that many frames available when I picked out m first pair t co ldn t see then so co ld e ron I was around 10 at the time. And not only could I not read the big E at the top of the eye chart without correction, but I also didn’t know it was there. Thus began my journey with glasses, contacts and eventually laser surgery. And that changed everything. Suddenly my Eye-Q was 20-20. I could see my clock when I woke up in the morning. I could see the inside of my shower. I scoffed at the Big E, though I was a little dismayed about how the inside of my shower looked.

I went on happily without glasses for many years, but my ophthalmologist had warned me that even laser surgery couldn’t stop presbyopia, the clinical term for old eyes. Either he was right, or they started making newspaper print smaller.

And that’s how I came to be in the optical shop, generally making a spectacle of myself. I was so overwhelmed by all the choices that when a friendly technician asked if she could help me, I said, “Yes. Would you pick out some glasses for me? ” She wouldn’t, but she did narrow the selection when I told her I wanted frames that came with magnetic clip-on sunglasses. If they could also not look ridiculous on me, so much the better.

She was optimistic. I wasn’t. I knew too much. When I need advice on anything from car maintenance to choosing a pineapple, I go to my good friend Google. But what I found there wasn’t particularly helpful.

Several sites said e e ear sho ld re ect o r est feat re for example, eye or hair color. My best feature is my instep, and I don’t see how that helps.

I also read that the frame shape should contrast with the face shape. One website recommended oval or round frames for my somewhat rectangular face. But another said something to the effect that it’s a free country and we should all wear whatever we want. Open-minded, but not very helpful.

Several of the sites I’d visited said that frame size should be proportional to face size. That makes sense. Several of the frames I tried on stuck out like rearview mirrors on a motorcycle. It wasn’t a good look.

Finally, frames should be compatible with your coloring.

You might not believe this, but I’ve been told I’m cool. At least my coloring is. And cool coloring calls for cool glasses, or rather, glasses in cool colors— black, silver, blue. I wasn’t excited about wearing glasses again, cool or otherwise, so I told the technician I wanted a pair no one would notice, sort of like… contacts.

But she had other ideas. She said her philosophy of glasses is, “If you have to wear glasses, wear glasses.” In other words, be bold. And I had to admit, she looked stylish in her oversized red frames.

But I know how fashion works. You buy the latest thing and 10 years later, you see a picture of yourself wearing it and wonder what you’d been thinking.

I intended to keep whatever glasses I buy until my prescription changed or I broke them playing tetherball, whichever comes first So finall chose a classic lac frame And after the technician had tallied up the price, I decided to follow my doctor’s orders and wear them all the time. My lenses came with man options anti-scratch protection anti-re ective coating— but Bluetooth location tracking wasn’t one of them. And I can’t afford to replace them if I lose them.

And so, after many years without glasses, I’m back to wearing them all the time. I’m getting used to it. It’s nice to see, and they’re cool. Their color is anyway.

Gilpin Girls heading to basketball playoffs

For the third straight year, the Gilpin High School girls’ basketball team will participate in the state playoffs.

The Eagles (14-7) will face i ins in the first ro nd of the Class AA tournament at 7 p.m.

Friday at Soroco High School in Oak Creek. The winner of tomorrow’s game will advance to the next round the following day at Oak Creek, which is south of Steamboat Springs. The winner of the weekend tournament will advance to the “Great Eight” playoff round the following week.

“We’re excited,” said Eagles Coach J eff Schussler, who is in his 20th season with the team.

“I’m really excited. I’m looking forward to my girls getting experience (in the playoffs) and hope they’ll want to do it again next year.”

Wiggins (13-9) is led by senior Rachael White, a 5-foot-7 senior who averages 14.3 points per game.

A non-senior lineup leads Gilpin High School. J uniors who start include Abby Smith, a 5-foot-1 shooting guard, and Skyley Ramsey, a 5-foot-7 post player who leads the squad in scoring 13.8 points per game.

“Abby plays like she’s 5-10,” said Schussler. “Skyley can guard

Rounding out the Eagles starting lineup are three freshmen, including Faith Ramsey, a 5-foot6 point guard (and Skyley’s sister); Avery Ramsey, a 5-foot-4 guard (who isn’t related to the other Ramseys); and Annabelle Aloel, a 5-foot-9 post player.

“Faith is our top defender. Avery is a shooting guard who plays with a lot of energy. Annabelle is a strong kid and holds her post well,” according to the coach.

Regulars off the bench include sophomores K ailee Stark, a post player, and Sterling O’Sullivan, a guard.

The Gilpin High School team started only freshmen and sophomores in 2020-21 after qualifying for the playoffs a year earlier.

Lisa Boulter: a lady and the boys’ basketball head coach

She’s a wife, mother, business manager, bartender, slot attendant and cooks.

Oh, yeah, she’s the head coach for the high school boys’ basketball team, too.

You read that correctly— the boy’s team – not the girls’ team.

If it seems like Lisa Boulter is pretty versatile, it’s because she is. In this era of females serving as NFL and NBA referees, female sports broadcasters and sports reporters, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some women are now coaching high school boys’ basketball teams.

This year, Lisa Boulter made her head coaching debut at the helm of the Gilpin High School Eagles boys’ basketball team. She’ll be first to tell o that she s not an anomaly – it’s happening elsewhere, too. “There was at least one other lady coaching a boys’ team in our league. There are a lot more female coaches getting into it. I remember at least two more female assistant coaches this year at the boys’ level. Everyone’s

been very receptive and respectful to me as a female coach. I think it’ll get easier every year as they get used to it. It’s a big change for them, too.”

Lisa coached her three sons in basketball for many years in club and recreational leagues. “I’ve been coaching them a long time - since they were in the second grade. We’ve played in Denver, at the rec center up here, then middle and high school.” he first- ear head coach didn’t have to look far to select her assistant coach.

He’s Lisa’s husband, Steve.

“I think it’s good that being a female in a teenage boys’ sport, you still need a male voice Steve definitel as that this season.”

“It’s funny. Before every game, there is a coaches’ meeting with the refs. Of course, they always came to Steve. He’d say, “No, it’s her,” she said, laughing. “However, everyone has been very respectful. I didn’t really know what to expect.”

All three of the Boulter’s sons played basketball, baseball, track and football at Gilpin High School.

As an assistant coach, Lisa Boulder coached all of them in basketball during their high school years. Chase, the eldest son, graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in chemical engineering. He currently works in Wyoming. The middle son, Austin, is a senior majoring in business at the U niversity of Colorado in Boulder. The youngest of the trio, Blake is a freshman at the School of Mines, also studying chemical engineering. He’s also playing club basketball in college.

As a child, she was taught to give back to the community. It’s a philosophy etched into her family’s DNA. During the weekdays, Lisa is a driving force at her family business, Dostal Alley in Central City, where she grew up. At any given time, she can switch her role as general manager to serve as bartender, cook, money-cage attendant and slot machine tech. She and her siblings, CinDee Spellman and Buddy Schmalz, run the casino, restaurant and brewpub started decades ago by their parents, Sandy and the late Bruce Schmalz, who passed in

2012.

Lisa played girls’ basketball at Gilpin High School and later played some in college. When she returned to Central City, she initially served as the volleyball coach at the high school.

“I coached volleyball for seven years. Girls are totally different (to coach), compared to boys.”

Steve Boulter also works at Dostal Alley with his wife of 28 years. In December, he wrapped up eight years as a member of the Gilpin County RE-1 School Board, including president in recent years. He’s also been an assistant football coach.

One doesn’t have to look very far around Gilpin County to understand the concept, “give back to your community,” according to the Schmalz family.

Sandy Schmalz worked with neighbors to attract tourists to Central City in the pre-gaming days.

The committee organized events, including Opening Day parades and the Madame Lou Bunch Day bed races and activities.

Buddy was Central City’s mayor for six years and was elected to the Gilpin County Board of Commissioners for eight. CinDee, whose brother-in-law is Black Hawk Mayor David Spellman, was elected to the school board several years ago. Lisa, CinDee and Buddy have volunteered as coaches, scout leaders, school helpers or done other community volunteer work over the years.

“We’ve really put ourselves out there,” said Lisa.

“But, you know, the town’s been great to us, too, for three generations. We’ve gotten a lot out of this town, so I strongly believe in giving back. I try to preach that to my boys, too, no matter where they wind up. Too many people just sit back and do nothing, except complain.”

The future appears promising for the Gilpin High School boys’ basketball team, according to Head Coach Lisa Boulter.

After o in - in a firstround district playoff game at U nion Colony Prep in Greeley last ee the a les finished the 2021-22 season with a 4-15 record. “It’s been a rebuilding year.

We had a lot of young players and only three seniors,” Coach Boulter said.

A total of pla ers filled the rosters for the junior varsity and varsity teams, with between 10-12 typically being listed for varsity games.

That roster included seniors J immy Immordino, Matt Marr and Alex Rodriguez-J iminez.

“All three of them played hard and gave 100 percent,” she commented. “Alex was our defensive specialist. He was super quick, super-fast. He gave it all on every single play and is a great all-around kid. J immie Immordino has played all four years. He’s a three-sport athlete

(basketball, football and baseball). I’ve coached two of his three older brothers. J immie is a big, strong player down below the basket. Matt plays huge. He’s very scrappy and not afraid of anyone nearly twice his size. All three seniors played four years.

Alex is also a three-sport athlete, football, basketball and baseball.”

Returning next season will be juniors Lucian Amaya-Church, Trey Lindberg, Bradley Robinson, Ezra Williams and Z ach Gebhart, sophomores Vincent Garcia, Roland K eller, Lane Willis and Ben Z eckser; and freshmen Austin Ebers, Connor Holloway, Drew Starkey, Brennan Lautrup, Aiden Z eilbeck and Ryan Hanssen.

According to statistics from www.MaxPreps.com, Lindberg led the Eagles in scoring, averaging 9.2 points and 1.6 assists per game, while Williams contributed 6.2 points per game. Willis averaged 5.7 rebounds a game, and Rodriguez-J iminez recorded 2.3 steals per contest.

“The kids that I had this year

just never, ever quit,” noted the coach. “From the tipoff to the final er the never ave p The effort was amazing. That’s going to teach them more in life than anything else. You won’t remember the score – you’ ll remember the life lessons of never giving up. No matter what the score was, they played hard, and they fought.”

Next season, Boulter expects the players to return and possibly add a few new players who would be entering high school.

“It’s a lot of players, especially for t o teams ilpin fields a smaller team, with only one player standing 6-foot-4.

Before taking the helm this season, Coach Boulter was the assistant coach for the past seven years. “This year, we put in a lot more man-to-man (defense). In the past, we had more size and were a big zone team as a defensive strategy.”

A philosophy of contributing to the school and community has taught the coach since she was young. “You’ve got to give back to your community in every way

possible. I 100 percent believe that,” she said. “I have so much fun coaching.”

Although the regular season is over for the boys’ basketball team, many players have already started conditioning for baseball season. “Some of them never get a rest whatsoever,” said Boulter, referring to the fact that some of the studentathletes attending conditioning programs lift weights, go to the Gilpin Recreation Center and keep busy throughout the spring and summer. “Some of these kids do baseball in the morning, go to class and then go to basketball later after school. Some of these players never get a rest, but I think it’s good for them.

The team will take a break from me for now because of baseball.

However, we’ll do several camps in the summer and participate in some open gyms. Very few of the kids here play only one sport. That’s good because all of the coaches work together. We don’t make the players choose one sport over another. That’s especially important in a small

school.”

Gilpin, which typically graduates 20 seniors a year, plays in the 3A-2A-1A MileHigh League, including schools with varying enrollment classifications Some of the a les season opponents included Clear Creek, Lyons, Longmont Christian, Nederland, Estes Park, South Park, Vail Christian, Platte Canyon, Denver Academy, Dayspring Academy of Greeley, Twin Peaks Charter Academy, Highland High of Ault, Dawson and U nion Colony Prep. “We do not play 1A schools. We’re a very small 2A school. The competition is pretty stiff.” according to the coach.

One of the toughest teams in the league is Highland, from Ault, which this season saw its 70-game league winning streak end.

“We don’t have to travel as far to games like football does.

Greeley pretty much is the furthest we go to play, and we play several different teams from up there,” she said.

Wildlife officials relocate mountain lion out of Boulder neighborhood

BOULDER Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers, with a helping hand from Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks (OSMP) and Boulder Police Animal Protection Officers, removed a mountain lion that was under a porch at a residence on 23rd Street and Panorama Ave. Sunday morning.

Homeowners reported the mountain lion at 7:30 a.m. right after seeing the cat. Their dog alerted the family that something was in the backyard underneath the decking that had roughly only a foot of clearance from the ground. The homeowner went to see what it was, thinking it was possibly a raccoon that they often find in the area, but upon looking with a flashlight noticed it was a mountain lion and called authorities.

OSMP Rangers and a Boulder PD Animal Protection Officer

were the first to arrive on-scene.

Once CPW Wildlife Officer Tyler Asnicar arrived, he tranquilized the mountain lion and they pulled it out from under the porch just before 10 a.m.

The mountain lion was relocated and released in a remote area in southwest Larimer County by 1 p.m.

It was a sub-adult male mountain lion, in good body condition, weighing approximately 115-120 pounds.

Asnicar described the various circumstances that come into play when looking at relocating a mountain lion. Given the time of day and how this lion was in a confined space that created a safe opportunity to attempt to tranquilize it, the decision was made to move it out of the area.

“One factor we look at is location when we get cats that come into town,” Asnicar said.

“This one was pretty far east in Boulder in a populated area and it is not a good situation to have a big predator like that close to so many people. It is better for the

people and the cat to try to move it. Relocation was our best approach in this case.”

Mountain lion activity is not new in Boulder and is to be expected. Since Jan. 15, CPW has had 17 reports of mountain lions in the City of Boulder, not including Sunday’s call that led to this relocation.

“Leading up to this over the past couple weeks, we’ve had several pets taken in town by a sub-adult lion, probably siblings in town,” Asnicar said. “They’ve been spotted a lot in north Boulder. This may or may not have been one of those cats, but increased winter activity is fairly typical as they follow their prey base down, and particularly the mule deer that move into lower elevations this time of year. The cats concentration around the western edge of town and that leads to an increase in sightings and probably led to this cat being in town looking for something to eat.”

Obituary

Judith Rose Thompson Judy Thompson passed away in Spokane, Feb. 16, 2022 after a long fight with several medical issues. She was born in Greeley to James and Denzil Solan on May 24, 1940, making her a 5th generation native to Colorado.

She loved dancing and started her teaching career as a dance instructor. Then became a co-owner/director of the family business, Kiddie Kampus, as well as a preschool, prekindergarten and kindergarten teacher for over 30 years. She touched many lives while teaching and was especially proud of the school being a member of the USO and bringing joy to many local service members and veterans. The children also performed for senior citizen centers. This taught the children how to treasure the value of having the elderly in their lives.

Upon the sale of the school in 1991, she went to live in the mountains of Black Hawk, and worked as a greeter/coat check lady at the Colorado Central Station Casino. Being that she was a social butterfly, she loved this job until a serious health issue caused her to leave her casino family.

Upon her recovery a year later, Judy and her husband Jack, went on to manage the local KOA Campground, and again, she was in her element of being delightfully social, while making many new friends.

She relocated to the Spokane area in 2018.

Being a warrior for animal rights, she rescued many animals and helped many rescues. The Rainbow Bridge’s strength must have been tested due to the number of animals that greeted her in Heaven upon her arrival.

Judy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Joel Cannon, her nephew, Chris Solan, and her beloved dog Oreo. Her husband, Jack Thompson, preceded her in death.

Judy will have a celebration of life service in the Spokane area in March, and one in Colorado April 16, 2022.
