There is lots of highway construction heading west this fall. Work on repaving some worn out stretches of I-70 climbing lanes is underway on Vail Pass in three different locations. Hopefully the construction will be complete before ski season begins. Repaving has been ongoing on westbound climbing lanes from I-70 from Silverthorne to the Eisenhower Tunnel.

It is somewhat amazing that none of the political candidates have addressed transportation issues within the state of Colorado. There is almost no bus service left, except to the casinos, and there are very few scheduled air routes flying to rural towns with reasonable fares.

As the mountain towns populations expand, the I-70 issues will continue to be a Sunday afternoon plague on drivers heading home or rushing to catch airplane flights on of DIA. The delays can last up to five hours, creating a real case of heartburn for drivers and no doubt missed air flights by tourists.

Saturday night at the tables – poker time

HOO HOO – it was Saturday night BY and time to play LARRY some cards. The JOHNSON kids were all busy; the wife was out with friends; and work was caught up. It’s poker time baby.

My plan was to take $500 that was burning a hole in my pocket and really make some money - doubling or even tripling the bankroll. And on this night I was ready to gamble and put my money in the middle.

I walked into the Ameristar Poker Room just after 7 p.m. and the room was absolutely rocking. All the tables were packed; the lists for the $1 - $2 / $100 Hold’em games were long; and the thick wood rail was lined with spectators observing the games in action.

Luckily for me, I had called in

an hour before on the way up so was quickly called to a full $2 - $5/$100 Hold em game. As I walked up with my rack of red chips and evaluated the table, it was like old home week.

Just like in the iconic poker movie Rounders when the lead character Mike said, “Beautiful, welcome to the Chesterfield south. Come all the way to Atlantic City just to see your mugs”, I knew 7 of the 9 players at the table.

But, tonight I was going to play just a bit different – aggressive; over the top; and maybe with just a bit of arrogance / hopefully surprise the regulars.

Three hands after I came in, I looked down and saw the As - Ks / also known as Big Slick. As the betting came to me there were 3 callers for $5 apiece and I raised to $35 -

aggressive to start the session.

Almost before I could get my raise out, the player behind me loudly said “raise” and pushed in a stack that looked like $100. When the dealer counted it, there was $95 for a $60 raise. The player on the button called the $95 and the players in front of me folded. This left it to me and I stuck with my aggressive plan and pushed $165, crying loudly “Raise it up again.”

The gentleman next to me stopped, leaned back, and took a long look at me - he was one of the players I had never seen before - and slowly counted out his chips and called, followed by the player on the button.

The flop came 3s, Kh, 10c and I had flopped the top pair with a backdoor spade flush draw. I bet out $80 as the pot was nearly $600 and the player behind me just called - although once again slowly. The player on the button once again called quickly, and the pot had grown to

nearly $900.

The turn came a 9s and I smelled a rat (or a straight.) While it did give me the nut flush draw, I had a feeling the gentleman on the button had hit his hand as he immediately sat up and began fanning his chips with his fingers. I checked along with the player behind me and the button pushed out a stack of $100 so quickly it toppled and the dealer had to restack it. I had played with him before on numerous occasions and he was fully capable of calling with a J - Q for $95 before the flop - thus calling seemed the prudent thing for me to do and the player behind me did the same.

The river was the 10s - an interesting card. It gave me the nut flush but also paired the board so a full house would beat me. At this point I decided to see what the players would do and just checked. The player next to me checked and the

button pushed in his last $90.

I immediately raised to $190, sure there was no full house. The player next to me was exasperated, simply not knowing where to put me. After a long 3 minutes he tossed his hand in - face up, and his pocket A’s were dragged into the muck (yep, he stayed with them to long.)

The button turned over his Jd Qc for a straight and he was already mumbling about bad luck when I turned over my nut flush.

Big win to start the session and I had stuck to my plan with aggressive play.

Four hours later and after a wild and unpredictable roller coaster ride, I drove down the canyon with $730 - a $230 winner and completely worn out from the poker battles. Whew.

And the best part is … I can’t wait to do it again next week. WHOO HOO. Remember - Play your game.

Many of the Pokertoriums in Colorado offer some kind of ‘Bad Beat’ [BB] prize, or Jackpot. If you watch the dealer as they rake the game, you may see chips go down the house side [the ‘Dragon’] drop – usually to the right of the dealer. That is what the house is taking to offer and run the game.

However, to the dealer’s left is another, smaller drop – that is where a chip or two go after each hand PAGE 10

sits there waiting for the BB to hit. [Of course, with banks paying a whopping quarter of a percent compounded bi-annually, it’s not much but hey, it can add up].

In general – and you’ll have to ask dealers for the house specifics – the qualifying hands for a BB are Quads beaten: Meaning one players’ four-of-a-kind is beaten by a higher value hand. Again, usually both players’ hole cards must play in addition to three on the board. House rules may dictate that three-of-a-kind on the board negates the BB, but you’ll have to

ask around for the exact qualifying hands and related rules. Many casinos post these rules for awarding a BB somewhere around the poker room. So when you show up to play and you’re awaiting a seat, look them up so you’re informed as to these rules. I have seen some rooms where the qualifying hand for the BB is Aces full of 10’s beaten, but again – ask around.

A few issues ago I wrote about having a hand which, on the surface, looked like a BB could just have been declared except for the fact that the straight-flush I made would not have counted as my bottom hole card would not have played as the straight-flush continued higher than my five cards and the other player would also have only a one-card to the high end. Close but no cigar…

I have in my years of playing, however, been involved in BB hands, both as a player beating and getting beat, and as one who received a table share. When a BB is declared – and confirmed by the floormen who have security review the tapes – the losing hand usually receives 40 percent of the

prize pool and the winning hand 30 percent. The remaining players at the table who were dealt cards in that hand [a missed blind button disqualifies that seat-holder from participating] share in the remaining 30 percent. Depending on the size of the prize pool, even a table share can make for a great payday.

My first one was at the old Lady Luck in Central City back in the $5 days; my Aces full of Kings beat Aces full of Queens and I walked away with a whopping $900 and change – a big payout for those days! The next one occurred to me at Ocean’s Eleven casino in San Diego. Only this time I had the Aces Full of Queens beaten by the same hand; that was an $11,000 payout. I took the parents out for a nice dinner that night.

Most recently, I was in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Hard Rock hotel & casino in Catoosa, just east of Tulsa. We had flown in, gotten our room and were settling in when I decided to play for two hours before talking my Sweetie to dinner.

I had barely gotten myself settled in when the BB hit at the adjoining

table! I think it was Quads beaten, but there was the usual hootin’ and hollerin’ and carryin’ on when something like that happens. Cool.

Good for them.

Then I discovered that this house policy was to award table shares to everyone in the room playing the same game! And since there were but two tables and we were both playing the same $1 - $2 No-limit Hold’em, all of us got a share. Mine turned out to be $7,794! I then went on to win another grand or so, so it was a very profitable night at the felt and more than paid for the entire trip.

So despite the huge odds against this event occurring – and even more astronomical to be involved as one of the top two money-makers, it can be done.

All it takes is being at the right table, playing the right two cards, with opponents playing the right two cards, and having the dealer dealing the right flop, turn and/or river, just at the right time. Simple, right? Just another opportunity to be thinking about poker.

‘Unsinkable Molly Brown’ a delightful fantasy

Maggie Brown would have loved the Denver Performing Arts Center production of “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.” And the audience should too, as long as they don’t take it seriously. Based on the 1960 Broadway production and a 1961 movie starring Debbie Reynolds and Harve Presnell, the play celebrates the life of the future Titanic heroine.

According to Denver Center Director Kathleen Marshall, “This is not a documentary, this is historical fiction. This is the journey of Molly Brown and part of that is her journey as a woman and her marriage.”

Well, OK then….

The production is great fun, with lively music, a pleasant flow and top notch, costumes and sets.

The cast, especially Colorado native Beth Malone as Molly and Burke Moses as J.J., put their all into their performances. If Malone bears a closer resemblance to a young Debbie Reynolds than any photos ever taken of Margaret (Molly) Brown, well so be it. In fact, it’s more like Malone playing Reynolds playing Brown, but it works.

Other cast members including Whitney Bashor as Julia and John Hickock as Horace Tabor do credit to their roles.

The musical, never wildly popular to begin with, faded into obscurity until 2006, when writer Dick Scanlan, a three-time Tony nominee, got permission from composer Meredith Wilson’s widow to revisit the production and add previously

The book, written by Richard Morris, took much of its tone from the fanciful Denver Post reporter Eugene Fowler, who was never particularly troubled by a need for accuracy. New songs and a revised script give the production a freshness the audience should appreciate. However, while it takes a more respectful tone toward Colorado’s famous Titanic survivor, an opportunity was missed to set the record straight.

The facts are these: Margaret Brown (never called Molly during her lifetime) was a farm girl from Hannibal, Mo., who moved to Leadville with her brother Daniel to join other relatives in the town’s Irish Catholic Community. Although poor and not well educated, the well-built redhead had dreams and hoped to improve her status by snagging a wealthy husband. She

met Brown at a church picnic in the early summer of 1886. Brown was 13 years older than Maggie, bigboned, blue-eyed and devastatingly attractive to women. A self-trained geologist with a talent for sniffing out ore deposits, he easily found a job as a shift manager for the mining interests of David Moffat and worked himself up to superintendent. Although Maggie doubted that J.J. would ever be able to provide the luxuries she wanted, romance won the day. And theirs was indeed a love match, stormy and passionate.

After a brief courtship, they married on Sept. 1, 1886, and moved to J.J.’s small two-room cabin in Stumpville, near the mines. Maggie embarked on a career as a not-sotypical Victorian housewife. With an eye toward self-improvement, she began taking lessons in reading, literature and music. During

the next three years they had two children, Lawrence Palmer in 1888 and Catherine Ellen in 1889. Following several years of moderate financial success, the couple finally hit the jackpot and, like many Leadville millionaires, including Horace Tabor, immediately moved to Denver. They purchased a relatively modest home at 1340 Pennsylvania St., flanked by two stone lions and furnished with all the latest modern conveniences.

Maggie was a public relations genius and an unabashed self-promoter. She became well known in Denver for her involvement with fundraising activities and multiple charities. Despite her good works, she often felt the sting of criticism by snippy reporters who considered her a publicity-happy social climber.

One snarky Denver Times reporter wrote, “Perhaps no woman

in society ever spent more time or money becoming civilized than Mrs. Brown.”

Eventually her ambition and need for attention wore on J.J.’s Victorian sensibilities. (He must have been mortified when she took up yodeling and performed at Elitch Gardens.)

With a good deal of bitterness, they finally separated for good in 1909, although they never divorced. Maggie testified in court that her husband was “given to periods of moroseness with an insane desire to kill me … He tried twice.

I got the gun both times, while he welt and afterward cried, begging me to go away where he could not kill me.”

While the attempts on her life may have been imaginary, no one doubted that J.J. wanted her to leave.

As the production shows, Maggie took off for Europe. She became a super star with the Titanic disaster, raising nearly $10,000 for the Survivors Committee Fund. She came home to Denver a heroine and Mrs. Crawford Hill even held a luncheon for her. Mrs. Brown later ran for Congress but was defeated.

The Browns may have quarreled constantly, but evidence suggests they always loved each other. Take away the mountains and the millions, and their story could be written today about any prosperous couple, one of who has ambition and an interest in personal growth or political aspirations and the other who is content to sit back and enjoy the good life. To use a Titanic metaphor, it’s now called “drifting apart.” They are buried next to one another in Long Island’s Holy Rood Cemetery.

A Ranch in Wyoming and Utah: Settling the Land

W

h e n discussi n g how western lands were settled after 1862, it is necessary to understand the effect of the Pacific Rail Road Act of that year and the subsequent one of 1864.

Abraham Lincoln signed both of these acts because he felt that a transcontinental railroad was critical to keep California in the Union during the Civil War, to bind the country together, and to increase trade with the Orient after the war. He was receiving strong encouragement from leaders in both western territories and eastern states.

Finances were a major concern. The country’s coffers were seriously depleted because of the war, so, rather than using entirely government funds, methods were devised to encourage investment capital from the private sector.

One of these was the division of land along the tracks into a checkerboard of one mile square divisions of land into odd numbered sections owned by the railroad and even numbered sections owned by the government. Land was one asset the government had to give. This system had been used to encourage the building of railroads prior to the transcontinental railroad.

Created in the Pacific RR Act of 1862, these divisions extended for 10 miles on either side of the track, 20 square miles in all. For every mile that the railroad progressed, it received 10 square miles of land against which it could issue bonds that were intended to help raise money for continued building of the road. The Pacific RR Act of 1864 increased this allotment to 20 square miles on each side of the track, or 40 square miles divided by the railroad and the government.

Once the railroad was complete, there were still large portions of railroad land that had not been purchased. There was also government land available,

but large amounts of it remained unsold for an even longer time. Much of this was land referred to as the “Great American Dessert” and was considered unfit for raising or growing anything. The Chapmans’ ranch, called “Neponset Land and Livestock,” included some of this harsh land.

There may have been earlier purchases, but one early one was filed on Aug. 6, 1878. “.... Joseph R. Porter of Rich County, Utah Territory, has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States a certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Salt Lake City, Utah Territory. Whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said Joseph R. Porter according to the Provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April 1820 entitled An Act making further provision for the sale of the Public Lands and the acts supplemental thereto for (therefore referred to as A1): [In reading land descriptions, note that they should be read backwards: Range and township, then sections and parts thereof.] West half of the North east quarter. The south east quarter of the north east quarter and the North West quarter of the South East quarter of Section twenty in township eight north of Range seven east in the District of lands subject to sale at Salt Lake City, Utah Territory containing one hundred and sixty acres ...”

Porter’s claim included water rights. He took claim to this section of prime grassland containing a portion of creek.

On Sept. 10, 1880, Thomas Spackman took out a United States Patent according to an act of Congress approved May 20, 1862. (This was known as the Homestead Act, and the 150th Anniversary of its signing by Abraham Lincoln was noted in 2012.)

twenty-four in township eight north of Range 6 east in the District of lands subject to Sale at Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, containing 80 acres.”

The importance of this section of land was that it had excellent sources of water. There will be more information on water in my next column.

On Dec. 10, 1883, George F. Chapman and his partner Charles Strong purchased the following from Spackman by signing a mortgage for $35,000 which was due one month later on Jan. 10th, 1884. The purchase included:

by Spackman from Porter, “the North East quarter of the North East quarter” of the same section 20 as mentioned above; Spackman’s claim (A2) in Section 24.

These land purchases formed the early nucleus of what was to become “Neponset Land and Livestock.”

Those parts of section 24 and the nearby land that was added to them became known to the Chapman family as the “Home Ranch,” and it is known by that name now,

nearly 130 years later.

The Mortgage Release was recorded in the Territory of Wyoming, Uinta County on Jan. 26, 1884, and in the Mortgage Record of Rich County. In addition to the lands recorded the purchase included: drilling machinery with drills, hammers, saws, planes, level, carpenter’s bench, hay racks and knives and cutters, harnesses with collars, log chains, saddles, wagons, sheep dip and dipping pens 7 miles from the ranch, about 3,900 head of sheep with marks, barley, oats and more. River Front soon became home base for Denver’s beloved baseball team, the Mountaineers. Games were played at a bandstand on Colfax Avenue, first created for special concerts by the Great Gilmore and his 55-piece band. Walker’s horse cars drove guests directly to the park entrance and returned spectators home at the end of the performance. The carriages were colorcoded for those who couldn’t read.

In 1887, Walker introduced another unique feature to landlocked Denver, a side wheel paddler that sailed to Brighton and back for 50 cents. When the South Platte proved too shallow for efficient navigation, the river was dammed at 19th St. to form a lake that extended back to 15th Street. One year, the paddler was converted into the H.M.S. Pinafore for Gilbert and Sullivan’s famous operetta. Performances were originally held every evening, but the Sunday show was dropped after the manager and company were arrested and fined for breaking the “Sunday blue laws.”

Walker subsequently sold River Front Park to the City of Denver, missing by months the Panic of 1893. He moved the family (which eventually included nine children) to New York, where he became publisher, editor and occasional writer for Cosmopolitan Magazine. He had purchased the magazine at a Walker’s Castle, the centerpiece of Riverfront Park, burned to the ground in 1951.

Wasting Time If we’re average— not that very many of us are— we’ll spend a full year of our lives looking for lost objects, eight By Dorothy Rosby drosby@rushmore.com months g o i n g through junk mail, and 43 days listening to recorded messages telling us to please hold for the next available operator. I read it on the internet, so it must be true.

I don’t mean to brag, but I’m way above average, at least when it comes to looking for misplaced items, possibly because I’m way above average at misplacing them. And I appreciate that someone has researched these timewasters, considering the effect they must be having on our gross domestic product.

How much time do we spend worrying about things that don’t happen and would it be more helpful to worry about things that do happen?

How much time do we spend standing in the aisles at the grocery store trying to choose between all the product varieties? Do I want gel, paste, mint, or cinnamon toothpaste? Should I get it with mouthwash, peroxide or baking soda? Do I need tarter control, cavity protection, whitening, or breath freshening more? Don’t answer that.

The point is I’ve been at the grocery store 15 minutes, and I still don’t have any food.

How much time do we spend looking for our vehicles in parking lots? I just wasted twenty minutes a few days ago myself, walking back and forth, clicking my key fob, hoping to hear my doors unlock. I was about to hit the panic button when I remembered I’d driven my son’s car that day. Ah-ha! I’m just

Unfortunately, there are many others that have not been studied yet. For example, how much time do we spend lying on the sofa, trying to muster the motivation to get up and go to bed? Or complaining about the weather instead of doing something about it? Or standing in the middle of the room, wondering why we’re there?

And how much time do we, as a nation, spend peering into our refrigerators, looking for food that’s not there? I know I do it far too much. It’s like I think someone made a lemon meringue pie since the last time I looked, which was approximately ten minutes ago and nowhere near enough time to make a lemon meringue pie, even with a premade crust.

How much time do we waste circling the block, looking for a better parking spot? There are times I could walk to the store, do my errand, and mosey back twice in the time it takes me to find the perfect spot.

For you men, the answer is probably “not that much.”

Good for you, but I’m sure you

make up for it with the time you spend flipping through television channels, something I almost never do, mostly because I can’t get the remote from my husband.

However, I estimate I’ve spent at least two years of my life digging through my purse looking for my car keys and another six or seven months looking for my sunglasses. I’ve also used a significant amount of time shuffling through the large collection of discount and loyalty cards I haul with me everywhere. I have so many that it’s hard to find the one I need for the business I’m in, so I finally give up and pay without it. Not only is this costing me money, it’s wasting my time.

And if you’re in line behind me, it’s wasting a big chunk of yours, too.
