Many Opera patrons were in the Mid City Grill and among the Saturday night crowd were Lucy and Bob Showalter, attorney and long-time board member of the Colorado Opera Association, chaired by amazing Nancy Parker. Bob was dining on a tender filet while I was enjoying a generous cut of juicy prime rib, complete with the salad bar, soup and fries. Gerri opted for the spaghetti that she really enjoyed on thin angel hair pasta. Our waiter Ben was attentive and the service was fast and efficient.

Adjacent to the main dining room is a fast food court where Patty Pacheco and Geri Gallegos were enjoying some gigantic delicious hotdogs. I plan on having one of those on our next opera experience and Century Casino visit.

The casino was busy and fancy – dressed operagoers were strolling through the aisles of slot machines with busy waitresses serving beverages.

The early day miners loved music and had the good taste and fortune to build themselves a fancy opera house that has been so successful for decades.

We were out the front door and up the Bud Wells street to the opera by 7:30 p.m. A short line led us to the interior of the famed Central City Opera House built shortly after the Civil War. There wasn’t a Confederate flag atop of the building since the Union forces defeated the Confederates at the Battle Maverick Sharp Tony Thorpe of Glorietta Pass along the Colorado/New Mexico border.

The creative George Wallace was one of Colorado’s more colorful developers. disguised contempt for people who didn’t appreciate his vision or, worse, stood in his way. He also could be narrow-minded. Because of a racial slur he allegedly made at a private luncheon, his flying pal, Governor Roy Romer, fired him from the Metropolitan Transit Board, setting light rail to the Corridor (nicknamed Wallyrail) back about twenty years.

Many of his associates remember meetings with Wallace after he became ill – red face, fists pounding on the table, steamrolling style, punctuated by drags of Marlboro cigarettes and hits from his oxygen tank. And, although he denied it in public, Wallace had difficulties with alcohol and took occasional “sabbaticals” for his health. He died in 1994 at age 77.

In many ways, Wallace was ahead of his time. A staunch believer in “the greenhouse effect” long before its acceptance, he had concerns about the environment, pollution,

and the future of this planet, which he gave about 400 years. He even had an idea for a mass transit system in outer space once the U.S. colonized Mars.

Deemed an impractical dreamer by more down-to-earth colleagues, Wallace had a vision for the entire I-25 southeast corridor (Denver south), the first developer to see the “big picture.” Although he may have been short on social skills, his imagination, determination, and drive jumpstarted one of the most productive business areas in the country, which now stretches from the junction of I-25 and I-225 to the Ridgegate development.

He made a lot of enemies, but they certainly respected him. And, he was never boring.

That familiar “Poker” itch came back over the past few days.

So I headed up to Black Hawk and the Ameristar Casino’s poker room to play some $30 - $60 limit hold em with a ½ kill / the Big Game.

There was one game going and I was able to grab a seat, buying in for $900.

Immediately I saw it was an active game with many callers in each hand.

I came in right after the button and on the 2nd hand woke up with pocket 9’s and called $90. The flop came 9h - kh 4c, giving me a set! A player bet, I raised and another raised with 4 players seeing the turn for $90 apiece.

The flop came As - Qh - 10s and, even though the flop missed me completely, I bet out $50 fast as I was in first position with the local player calling. The turn came the 2s, putting a flush on the board and I bet $100 fast and hard. The local player looked at me and once again slowly called. The river card was the Ac, putting As - Qh - 10s - 2s - Ac on the board.

Once again I bet fast and the local player said, “Got it on the turn?” and tossed her Qs - 10d (two lower pair in the muck) giving me the win. She had thought I caught the spade flush and then when the Ac hit, she was sure her two pair were no good and tossed the hand in. Wheeeeew - the bluff worked!

I immediately stacked and counted my chips with the end result totaling exactly $904 - I had made it all the way back from $31 and the session was profitable by $4.

Time to get off the roller - coaster while ahead! I racked up, cashed out, and headed home with the poker itch satisfied for another few days.

The blinds were coming up and I leaned over to Jerry the dealer, held up my 3 chips (one green, one red and one white) and said, “Now, this will be a story” and the turnaround began!

The next hand brought me the Ah 8s and I called all in, winning when an Ace hit on the river giving me two pair / bringing my total to just over $130.

The next hand brought me the Ah Qc and I raised again with 4 callers seeing the flop for $60. I flopped two pair and won another hand when their draws didn’t come in / bringing my total to over $500 with the win.

Since I had won 2 in a row and the last one was over $300, I had to “Kill” the pot which means the betting goes to $50 - $100.

When Jerry dealt out the cards I looked down to a 6h - 3c, definitely not the hand I wanted to see and I did the unexpected, I raised the bet to $100 with one full - time local player calling. My idea was to play the hand aggressive no matter what the flop as my table image was tight and maybe I would win this one through aggressive betting.

The turn brought the Ah and a new player bet out immediately signaling a flush. The rest of us just called.

The river brought the 2h putting 4 hearts on the table. The player bet and I folded quickly with him showing a Qh for more than a $1,000 win and I was down $200 in the first hand.

A few hands later I called with a 6c - 7c for $30 and got involved in a draw that cost me another $300.

The 8c - 9c - Ah flopped and did not improve.

The next hand I looked down to pocket Kings and raised to $60 with the pot being capped at $120 and 4 players seeing the flop. The flop came Ah - 4c - 2s and by the time the betting got to me it was already capped so I folded rather than chase a King.

Thus, here I was sitting for less than an hour and I was down nearly $800 to just over $100 in front of me. It was time to find a hand and commit to it.

A few hands later I picked up the 5d 6d and raised, hoping I could get all in, but the betting only went to $90. The flop was Ah - Kc - 10h and no help to me
