Arapahoe coroner takes early retirement Deputy to take over office next month

By Peter Jones Arapahoe County Chief Deputy Coroner Kelly LearKaul was appointed this week to replace her boss, longtime Coroner Michael Dobersen, who will retire June 2. On May 20, the county’s Board of Commissioners voted to tap Lear-Kaul, an office veteran and candidate for the job in this November’s election, to complete Dobersen’s fifth and

final term, which ends in January 2015. Dobersen had already announced he would not run again after more than two decades of leading the county’s death investigations, but his decision to step down early from the elected post had not been official until recently. “I just turned 65 last week so I thought it was a good time to give Kelly a little time to be the incumbent. It’s time for Medicare, Social Security and all that,” he said. Coroner is the only countylevel elected seat for which
