Natural gas is probably the fuel of the future, but converting these huge power plants to different fuels is expensive and long range, but will probably happen eventually with coal miners losing jobs and homes.

I understand there are more than 300 homes for sale in Craig right now. Craig is a good place to buy a home and just hang out and hunt, fish, play golf and enjoy the fresh air in northwest Colorado. The town is only 40 miles away from Steamboat Springs ski slopes and wonderful trout fishing all around.

West of Craig there was some interest in putting a casino in Dinosaur, a few miles outside of Vernal, Utah, to attract the oil workers from nearby Rangely, and the Utah folks to venture into Colorado to gamble. This never became reality and there are just not enough people living in the area to make it profitable.

Driving into Denver this morning at 7 a.m., the traffic was almost at a standstill with the cars on I-25. The metro area is booming, parking lots are full, and

Thinking About Poker: Getting back to basics 3

As a quick review, circumstances had dictated my absence from the poker tables for about nine months.

During that time when I had time to myself, I began thinking about … well, poker – duh. I looked back on the last few years of playing and decided I wanted to recharge my game. I felt I had gotten into a rut style-wise, playing too many hands and in general reverting back to an unimaginative, predictable player.

So when I had time I dug out some old poker books and began to reread that which I studied years ago to improve my play back when poker was still a novelty in the state. I won’t mention the titles per se, but many are written by well-known, “old hands” at the game and I’m sure, as a serious poker player, you too have some of these buried in your library.

In essence, I revisited the basics; what it took these authors time to write about describing the way each of them went from rookie player to

skilled professional [I ignored any reference to on-line play as, thanks to our in loco parentis beneficent politicians, we cannot enjoy that freedom any more [no doubt, for our own good].

Anyway, that gripe notwithstanding, I reviewed and studied seriously what was presented; I even took the time in some cases to break out a deck of cards and lay out the examples used in the book for better visualization. Believe it or don’t, that sure helps – visualizing the play and development of each hand.

In the last set of articles written for this august publication, I detailed some of the factors gleaned from my study and the results from using these strategies and tactics once I was able to resume my direction at the felt. The first article listed powerful hands to play – exclusively – when at the table. Grouped into A, B, C, D and E classes, the chart presented in that article showed which group played best in each

position; early, middle and late. If you wish to review the hand rankings, you can research back through the archives of this publication to find them. Most any decent poker book addresses the issue, however, so you don’t have to dig far or deep to find it. I then reported how well the results were when playing only using this chart and these hands; my first session back netted over $800 and the second better than half that. Nice start.

The second factor in my re-education at the tables was developing – well, reacquainting myself is a better descriptive – with the virtue of patience. To keep in mind that yes, I am there for a few reasons [social, entertainment and diversion] but the primary reason is to come home a winner: To return home with more folding green than I left the house with. So with the lesson of playing only powerful hands appropriately, I forced myself to wait for the hand to come around.

Poker players, having made that long, tortuous drive up the mountains, arrive at the Pokertorium and want to play. We want to mix it up, get those chips flying around the

table and we came for action. That’s all well and good for action junkies but not good for the serious-minded poker player who is dedicated to improving his game and having the poker experience mean more than a mere diversion. So I made a point to wait patiently for those few really powerful playable hands to come along and then hit the opposition hard and mercilessly. I had another three winning sessions.

Tonight [a weeknight], I had about five hours of free time so I opted to play a shorter session than my more usual 8 – 10 hour stretch.

The third factor I wanted now to focus on was position; that is, using my position in the scheme of things to advantage. Of course, later position is the nominally best position to play from but the others can be used with great benefit if one sets the tone of play and gets the opposition to play a reactive game to your action. I began to make raises from late position in unraised pots and was pleased to find that most players who limped in for the blind bet would quickly surrender in the face of an attack. Continuation bets post-flop would weed out most

others who called my raises to see a flop. By gauging the texture of the flop I could with fairly good accuracy estimate what they held and when the flop didn’t connect with their hand, could bet them out of the pot and sweep the chips my way. Granted, when a flop hit with what would easily connect with what I inferred they were holding, I bailed out if I met with resistance.

The key here was looking at the flop to see of course what it consisted of but to a greater degree to estimate if an opponent would call my raise[s] and if the flop had hit them.

I was able to then estimate if someone was chasing a straight or flush and when it didn’t hit by the river, bet them off a busted draw.

Didn’t matter what I had, I found playing the player was just as profitable as playing good cards [more on that in a subsequent article].

Tonight’s session netted just under $500 for four hours of play at a $1/$2 - $100 hold’em table – I might have to play some of these shorter sessions in the future if they’re going to turn out like this. In the meantime, keep thinking about poker.

For example, last Saturday evening the count of these games compared to other type of poker games was right at 3 to 1 in the four poker rooms I visited with many players on the waiting lists hoping to get in.

Why is it so popular?

First, in most rooms the buy-in to sit down at a $1 - $2 table is a relatively low $100. For many beginning players in today’s no-limit world of poker, this game can serve as a type of learning zone where they perceive they can’t get hurt too bad in a single hand.

Second, the ante is low with a

$1 small blind and a $2 large blind. This is perfect for the players who just like to sit and play without a large risk - maybe waiting for the big bad beat that is currently at $350,000; or who play a tight game designed to simply make a few dollars a session on a regular basis; or who are there just to have fun.

Third, the first two perceptions can be completely wrong at times. This could be due to a certain lineup of players that may be very volatile, because of the time of night, or maybe because of too much alcohol consumed - but for some reason or another some games are wild, crazy, and feature big pots. And - these big pots draw the professional, seasoned player who makes up that 3rd and most

dangerous category. These players are looking to take advantage of and take money from first 2 types of players.

Last Saturday night, while playing in a $1 - $2 game in the Ameristar Poker Room, I was able to observe all three types of players in action.

In one hand a player sat down just a few hands after I did with $70. After a moment the dealer alerted him that the buy in was a minimum of $100 and he sheepishly asked his wife for another $30. She handed it to him, and he was ready to go.

Within a round he was up to $190 and very excited. Then, he raised to $20 with what turned out to be a Kh - Qh with 4 players calling. The flop came Kd - Qc - 10d and he bet $60. One player called with a 2c coming on the turn. The raiser once again pushed out a $60 stack and the other player raised him his last $50. He called

and when the river came a 3c, his top two pair lost to his opponent’s Ad - Jd and a flopped nut straight.

The player who had bought in for $70 (then $30 more) had built his stack to $190 and lost it all in one hand. The last I saw of him he was walking away talking to his wife about his horrible luck.

Then in a second hand, a very good player who usually plays the $2 - $5 game or higher but whose bankroll had taken a beating lately, played his pair of A’s perfectly with a strong pre-flop raise of $50, One player with pocket J’s called and with low cards on the flop, turn, and river, the player with the J’s lost over $200 calling the A’s.

reached him, tapped the table as he tossed a red chip to the dealer, and said, “Thanks for the game.”

He is a local retired gentleman who plays 5 days a week just to supplement his social security - and he had just won $240 in a little over 2 hours. He plays a tight game, waits for his opportunity, then cashes out when he is ahead - taking his and others players money with him.

So, as you pick a $1 - $2 game ensure you pay attention to the players sitting at the table around you. They may be novice or beginner players without much knowledge, or someone just out to experience the poker scene without caring if they win or lose, or a professional player there for one purpose - to take your money.

Being able to identify the different type of players and adjusting your play accordingly may be the key to a winning session.

Many companies are attempting to address the slave trade issue directly by purchasing their supplies from farmers or farming co-ops on the Ivory Coast that do not participate in the slave trade. Chasing Sunshine: The Colorado cure for tuberculosis

As we complain about yet another heavy snow, let’s remember when invalids came to Colorado by the thousands to sleep outdoors in a tent or tentcottage or a thin-walled one-room cabin. All winter long. The “rest cure” or the “sunshine cure” was administered at one of the numerous sanitariums around the state to cure the scourge of tuberculosis. Starting in the 1870s, doctors prescribed the “rest cure” in a dry, bracing climate with numerous sunny days.

Colorado was promoted as the World’s Sanitarium, and treating TB grew into a significant regional industry with numerous economic, social and even architectural impacts. Visitors arrived in the Pikes Peak region and elsewhere in the state for more than the views. Colorado Springs and Manitou as a Health Resort, a brochure published in 1883, promoted the health amenities and shared testimonials from educators, business leaders and former invalids cured of TB. At one time Colorado Springs had 17 sanitariums of many different sizes. The city became a leader in international in health science with two physicians at the forefront. Dr. Edwin Solly arrived from England for his health. He started the first TB treatment facility in the mid-1870s and opened Cragmor Sanitarium in 1905.

Dr. Gerald B Webb treated thousands of patients, and also taught, lectured and published about the disease, as well as serving as president of the National Tuberculosis Association.

Essentially a lung disease, tuberculosis caused a wasting away from loss of appetite and drastic weight decline.

Its symptoms included breathlessness, an incessant cough that brought up copious sputum (phlegm), poor digestion, vomiting, insomnia, night sweats, nightmares and coughing up blood. In extreme and deadly cases, TB invaded the patient’s bones, skin and lymph nodes.

In 1882, German bacteriologist doctor Robert Cook discovered that TB was caused by mycobacteria and spread from coughing, sneezing and talking. The open-air rest cure would remain the most effective remedy until discovery of an antibiotic 60 years later.

Accommodations for TB invalids coming to Colorado from the East and Europe ranged from luxurious sanitariums with sunny southfacing porches to canvas tents clustered around a private dwelling. Each facility administered the prescribed treatment of open-air rest, consuming healthy meals in very large portions and drinking quarts of milk daily.

Many sanitariums had a private dairy farm to meet the medicinal demand for milk.

Tuberculosis invalids also stayed in hotels, boarding houses and private homes. “A very satisfactory room and board can be had in cities such as Colorado Springs or Denver for $35$50 a month,” reported a 1890s visitor publication. “At such houses the invalid is likely to get a good table and a cozy comfortable room and have his wants generally looked after by the landlady.”

In Colorado Springs, hundreds of historic homes still have “tuberculosis porches” where the lungers sat and slept outside year-round. North Nevada Avenue, built up with large front-porched rooming houses, was called Lungers Row. Small huts, tentcabins and tiny cottages also were scattered in backyards around Colorado Springs, Colorado City and Manitou Springs. Dr. Charles Fox Gardiner invented a unique conical-roofed TB hut – produced by the hundreds – distinguished by its octagonal form and pointy roof resembling a tipi.

Some TB invalids arrived and recovered and became civic leaders who shaped Colorado’s young cities. In Denver, Mayor Robert Speer implemented The City Beautiful Movement and nationally known architect Temple Hoyne Buell designed landmark buildings. Colorado Springs’ premier architect Thomas McLaren had arrived from Scotland, suffering with consumption from which his brother had already perished.

Many famous Colorado Springs residents came for the cure and recovered, among them nationally popular novelist Helen Hunt Jackson, Colorado Midland Railroad owner James J. Hagerman, journalist-historian Marshall Sprague and internationally acclaimed potter Arturus Van Briggle.

Many Colorado Springs facilities became leading medical centers. Penrose Hospital originated as Glockner Sanitarium opened thanks to a large donation from a wealthy, 22-year-old TB widow, and it was operated for decades Sisters of Cincinnati. Memorial Hospital began as National Deaconess and Belleview Sanitarium. St. Francis Hospital, which with merged with Penrose Hospital in the 1980s, started as the St. Francis Sanitarium.

Other Colorado Springs facilities were repurposed to new uses.
