Perfect Poker in 2015

T

he New Year is here which means it’s time for a new Poker Tally Book.

BY Keeping this reLARRY cord of my play up JOHNSON to date and accurate will be one of the keys to my success at the tables in 2015. Simply put - a playing record and overall total makes me be honest with myself concerning my play.

In 2014 I averaged $4.78 as an hourly rate playing poker. The great news is – it’s a positive number.

The not so great news is – it was not as good as it could have been if I played better consistently. After a few weeks of thought I would not grade my play for 2014 any better than a C plus. I can do better – much better.

Overall, I played an average of seven hours a week with only five

poker talk

tournaments for a total of 364 hours of play. I had an average of two wins for every loss, but the losses were usually larger than the wins. Sadly, I was up almost twice the amount I ended up winning late in the summer but had a very tough fall.

Why? The answer is simple: I lost my confidence and began to play too many hands. This equaled into an avalanche of losses in September and October. While I did come back a bit over the holidays, I still was playing tight and, to be honest, a bit unimaginative – allowing other players to lead the way. So, while I won at the end of the year, I did not like the way I got there - and 2015 is going to be

different.

I’m 49 years old. I’ve played poker for the past 24 years (almost half of my life) on a regular basis at almost all levels - both live and tournaments. I understand how to play the game; how to read my opponents; and deep down know when it’s time to get up or stay at the table and play the steak - so, now it’s time to WIN. How? Well - I’m going to play “my game” and stick to perfect poker. By this I mean I will play my “A” game - adjusting as necessary, playing pot odds when it makes sense, and staying focused. If I have an unlucky night, I’ll lose a little and if I have a lucky night I’ll win a bunch.

The goal will be to win. The key will be to stick to this every session / all it takes is losing control during one big game and the Perfect Poker Plan could be in jeopardy. So - perfect poker in 2015.

The first thing I am going to do is move back to the game I am

comfortable in. While I moved to the $2 - $5 / $100 hold em game more in the fall, it’s back to the $30 - $60 ½ kill hold em for me in the upcoming year. It’s not as much of a trap game, the pots make the risk worthwhile - and I can really play the game of poker the way I want to. So, along with moving back to the Big Game, here are a few other things I am going to do a bit different: More large tournaments. I like them and the payoff is very good if you can hit your steak at the right time. Hopefully I’ll have an article coming up on my 1st big win of the year.

Avoid playing short stacked.

Have enough to play my game correctly in whatever limit, or don’t play.

Keep an accurate book. Write down every win and loss - learn.

Play aggressive when ahead.

Make it expensive for my opponents to call through building pots

when I am ahead and giving no relief - bet and keep betting.

Pick my game. Pick the game that fits what I am trying to do, and jump in. If a seat is not available at the limit I want, check the other limits and see if the games work for me. If so, jump in - if not, do something else.

Win the war. Play the year like one long 365 day session; do not worry about individual sessions (or battles) - win the 2015 Poker War. Listen more than I talk. I am very gregarious and outgoing which makes it easy to become distracted.

The rule this year: Listen but do not become involved, I am there to play and win.

Watch out – 2015 is going to be the best poker year of my life with loads of fun and an overall winning year. Remember - play your game and good luck in 2015 (unless you are playing against me of course).

Now a question for you, faithful readers: Have you ever misplayed a hand – or mis-thought through your actions for a hand – that you wish you had managed differently? Well, yours truly did exactly that during this session; I’ll tell you why this column has the title it has – because in this hand I was not ‘Thinking About Poker’! I looked down finding two black Aces: Being in early position I could have raised and with table dynamics being the way they were, could likely have won the blinds. So I risked whatever might come by merely calling the blinds.

The flop held an Ace, so I began the hand with two opponents and Trips.

Being first to act I checked, my opponent on the button bet $20 and the other folded. The Turn was check-check and when the River came I was first to bet but my opponent on the button made a $40 out-of-position bet. I told the dealer technically I was first

to act and the opponent, realizing his mistake, pulled back his bet. I then checked, he checked, and my trips took the pot. If I had kept my mouth shut, allowing his bet to stand, I could have called or even made a raise for more money.

Again, a little thought about what was going on – and not standing on a righteous technicality – might have resulted in more profit than what was made.

The last unique hand in this session was after about four hours of play; the hand I just related to you had provided profit for continued play and while again up-down-up play went on, nothing really stood out until… I look down to find Ah – Kc in my hand, so I raise the blind to $20. By the time the play gets back to me four players had gone all-in! Quiet table for hours and then what we used to call a ‘Mad Minute’ when all hell breaks loose! The average all-in amount was around $130 so there was at least $550 in the pot and I had yet to act. Into the thinking tank I go to try and make sense of this – what could they have?

If anyone had A – A or K – K I was screwed if either one flopped; if they held J – J, Q – Q I had outs against them and the pot odds were good. I would split the pot if up against A – K and either one fell and if the opponents had A – Q, A – J or less I was dominating them. So what to do? Calling the top all-in player would cut my stack in half but still leaving me with a profit – albeit much smaller – for the night. Well, I could think myself out of participating in this hand or…give myself the chance to get lucky.

The flop held three small hearts, the turn brought another and the river a meaningless black nine. I faced pocket Queens, pocket Jacks, another A – K and an A – Q; since I had the nut heart card in my hand I scooped the entire pot and had the others shaking their heads. An eminently favorable flop and turn following a decision to step out giving myself a chance to get lucky and voila! A very successful night with a basis on Thinking About Poker.

By Bud Wells My son Dale and I about 9 p.m. on a recent cold night had parked and were out pushing a neighbor woman in her front-wheel-drive Hyundai from deep snow along the side of the street.

About the same time, my iPhone, left at home, was informing Jan and daughter-in-law Sandy where we were. The iPhone pinpointed on a map the address of where our car was parked, actually only half a block from home (we were driving toward home when we came across the car in distress).

The next morning, adding to the iPhone’s involvement in this automotive review, I parked the car in my driveway after a drive-through at a Starbucks, walked into our house and my phone beeped, and then messaged me that “Your Volvo is unlocked.”

Not only was I able to lock and unlock the car from my phone, I could also remote-start the vehicle.

It is the 2015.5 Volvo V60 T6 R-

Design Sportswagon featuring the Volvo On Call Smartphone App. At the suggestion of Dan Lantowski, representing Volvo for Waggener Edstrom Communications, I downloaded the Volvo on Call app onto my iPhone shortly after the V60 was delivered to me.

It (the app) allowed me to access a status overview of the vehicle and recent drives, determine its current position, and enjoy the aforementioned connections.

The arrival of the new V60 wagon in the past year is inspiring to the future of Volvo, which had been in somewhat of a slowdown mode since the Swedish firm was sold to China’s Zhejiang Geely four years ago.

I drove the V60’s initial offering last spring, a sleek, low-slung, front-wheel-drive T5 wagon powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine and 8-speed automatic transmission.

Showing up last week, though, with all-wheel drive and enhanced

performance was the T6 R-Design with twin-scroll turboed inline6-cylinder which “out-horses” the T5 by 325-hp to 240. Mated to the inline-6 is a 6-speed automatic transmission. With 354 lb.-ft. of torque, outstanding power is delivered, particularly with the steeringforce level set on high and paddle shifters at hand in Sport shift mode.

Handling is improved with a lowriding sport chassis, and acceleration and cornering are excellent.

All that power and the T6 carries an EPA fuel-mileage estimate of 19/28; my overall average was 22.8.

The R-Design package includes soft, stitched luxury leather seats.

The center stack is tilted toward the driver, controls within easy reach and storage behind and below the stack. Sensus Connect navigation/ audio is highlighted with a 7-inch color monitor, with MP3, USB, Bluetooth and Sirius radio.

The rear cargo area provides 28 cubic feet of storage space. The review model had no spare tire; one is

offered as an option, though it must rest in the cargo space.

Sticker price on the V60 T6 was $49,275; the lesser-equipped 4-cylinder model I drove last spring carried a price of $42,225.

Adding $1,550 to the R-Design’s price was heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel and windshield and heated windshieldwasher nozzles. Blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, lane-change aid and front and rear park assist were added as options, though the vehicle had no rearview camera.

2015 Lexus LX 570 is king of the road

Wow, might be the description of the 2015 Lexus LX 570 that arrived in the driveway this week to preview. This is the “daddy” SUV of them all with shiny “Nebula gray pearl” paint on this large framed vehicle.

This is a Lexus that one could tour America and live in the rear space. Built to pull a trailer, boat or camper, this is a workhorse featuring a V-8 engine capable of producing 383 horsepower with a sixspeed sequential transmission.

A parking attendant told me what a great vehicle it was in sheer admiration.

“King of the Road” might be a description of this all-wheel-drive that

has every feature known to the automotive industry attached. This of course drives the price to $82,930 and the test model added a few more extras such as a Mark Levinson 19-speaker sound system; and a luxury interior package including leather and wood trimmings.

Weighing more than 6,000 pounds, this LX 570 would qualify for tax credits for those who like tax deductions. Because of the size, weight and horsepower, fuel consumption averages around 17 mpg.

Not so painful with the lower price of gasoline, but fuel prices won’t stay down forever with growing world demand.

A large SUV is considered by

many to be safer and this vehicle is so new it is not safety rated but no doubt will have the highest five-star rating soon. Since Wyoming was known for its summary justice, they feared being lynched by vigilantes without benefit of trial. Horse theft was serious business, and they had added to that by firing at lawmen. Fred and Patrick were becoming known as dangerous desperadoes.

they purchased 300 rounds of ammunition. They rode through Coalville and Wahsatch, avoiding Wyoming by veering to the west of Evanston. They settled down the night of July 29th in an empty shack belonging to a Mr. Palmer.

Palmer had taken his family on a trip, so the Palmers had the good fortune of not being at home. The shack was about 2 miles south of the southern boundary of Neponset Land and Livestock, the ranch belonging in part to my greatgrandfather, George Chapman.

150 Years Ago The Indian Raids of Julesburg

I

n 1859, Jules Beni, a French trader, established Julesburg as a trading post along the South Platte River in the northeastern corner of Colorado.

From the beginning, this was an important stop along the Overland Trail, although the trail only crossed this small section of what would become Colorado. Yet the north/south fork of the Overland trail occurred at Julesburg, making it a strategic supply point. The north trail followed the North Platte River through Wyoming to South Pass, on into California and Oregon. The southern trail followed the South Platte River to the early settlement of Denver City. As traffic increased along the route Fort Rankin was constructed nearby to protect the travelers from the often roaming Indian raids.

Following the brutal massacre of innocent Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians at the peaceful Indian camp in southeastern Colorado known as Sand Creek, in November 1864, the Plains Indians formed an alliance for war and revenge, the likes of which the western settlers had never experienced, culminating with the 1876 massacre known as the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

Following the Sand Creek massacre, Indian war councils were held and concluded, preparations for raids along the Platte River were made, including a massive raid at the town of Julesburg, Colo. The immediate concern was fortification of supplies.

“The tradition of the war pipe, when necessary, was sent out in the spring, but after the slaughter at Sand Creek, the war pipe went out in the winter, this was early December. To my knowledge, from the old ones, never before had the war pipe been sent in the time of winter until after Sand Creek,” said John L. Sipes, Cheyenne Nation historian.

Following several small raids along the Platte River, the massive Julesburg raid occurred in January 1865. More than 1,000 warriors of Cheyenne, Sioux and Arapaho made the attack. Included in this war party were the many women who traveled with the group, herding the extra horses needed to carry the supplies obtained back to their camp. Among these women was Mo-chi, a survivor of Sand Creek, who insisted on helping her people in whatever way she could. She would prove herself worthy.

Warring Indians sacking Julesberg settlement.

It was an incredible attack; thoughtfully planned and executed brilliantly. The collective warriors, led by the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers, approached the bluff above Julesburg, hiding in the sand hills. It was a crisp cold night, yet it mattered not. Most of the warriors were deep in thought and preparation. The warriors readied their lances, shields, bows and arrows. Only a few had firearms. At sunrise on Jan. 7, 1865, a separate group of warriors, led by Big Crow, quietly approached Fort Rankin and rushed the guards outside the fort walls. The soldiers returned fire and then the gates of the compound opened with over 40 mounted soldiers in pursuit of the Indian war party. The decoy worked perfectly.

Soon the Indian scouts sent the signal and the hidden warriors converged upon the fort and nearby settler quarters. With the soldiers away in pursuit of the decoys, the remaining warriors were at their leave to plunder the area. Barrels of flour, sugar, and molasses were taken, as well as sacks of cornmeal, beans, sides of bacon and canned goods. Both Charles and George Bent, members of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers, and sons of the famed fort owner, William Bent, participated in the raid. George later recalled the plundering, saying the Indians did not understand things in a can, and were disgusted when George

opened a can of oysters and slurped down the contents. Bent also recounted the discovery of green paper by the Indians. Not knowing it was federal currency, they threw it aside, at which point Bent, who knew all too well the value of the money, scurried to scoop it up. George Bent also found a new soldier’s uniform, which he took and proudly wore in future Indian raids.

A short time later the women, led

by Mo-chi, entered the fray with packhorses and began loading the goods onto the animals. As the warriors began to leave the scene, Mo-chi busied herself with herding the captured horses.

Meanwhile, with the plundering of Julesburg in progress, the pursuing soldiers who had followed the decoys, amazingly (perhaps in confusion,) had dismounted and staged a counter fight. The warriors pounced on the soldiers, killing 15, including a bugler, who many warriors first counted coup on. When Old Crow made the final attack of death, Cheyenne warrior Medicine Water took the bugler’s horse as his prize. The victorious warriors made their way to the retreating group, where Medicine Water turned his prize horse loose with Mo-chi’s horse herd.

The Indians retreated from Julesburg for a time, and the U.S. Army responded. Within 30 days of the Julesburg attack, the U.S. Army sent

added troops to guard stage stops and various trails, including the Overland Trail.

The Indians responded by simply changing tactics and destinations; the raids continued. Julesburg was raided again, burned to the ground, and the town relocated, two miles north of the army post.

The town of Julesburg would move two more times, unprecedented in Colorado history.

The Indian raids continued along the various overland stage routes, eventually forcing famed overland stage owner, Ben Holladay to near bankruptcy. By 1868, the U.S. government became convinced that peace negotiations were needed once again. Successful at first, Julesburg and most of Colorado Territory were spared from further Indian raids.

And for a time, the U.S. Army prevailed in raids of their own, such as Summit Springs, and Beecher Island.

This did not end the Indian wars in Colorado or the West until 1876, in Montana, at a place known as the Battle of This historical marker, highlighting the the Little Big Horn. history of Julesberg, was erected in 1931.

found in Death Trap Canyon, Arizona. It is a pendant consisting of a hardwood ring, 3-1/4 inches across, bearing a mosaic formed of 81 pieces of turquois affixed to wood with gum. In Colorado, turquois was found in the same areas where miners dug for gold and silver during the 1880’s, including Cripple Creek and Leadville.

Today, the finest turquois in the world, called Persian or Persian blue, comes from the southwest slope of the AliMirsa-Kul Mountains in Iran.

Turquois is also mined in China and Tibet. Australia mines turquois in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales. Today, the United States is the world leader in the production of turquois, most of which comes from the southwestern states.

Treated turquois: - Most turquois bought today is “stabilized.” Stabilized turquois has been soaked in a plastic resin or paraffin, which darkens and toughens it. Hard natural turquois cannot be scratched by a sharp object. Stabilized tur-

quois often has a transparent plastic-like appearance and looks almost oily. Fully, 90 percent of all turquois sold today is stabilized or treated so it will be less porous and have better color.

There is nothing wrong with that, but it is illegal to pass off treated stones as natural turquois, a more valuable and rare commodity. Stones with a lightcolored matrix are often wiped with a liquid shoe dye for a more appealing look. Some imitation turquois is made from a soft white stone that has a spider-like matrix very much like that of matrix turquois. This stone is called howlite and is found mostly in California. The stone is first cut and polished and then placed in a blue dye.
