It appears the New Year will be a good business year for gaming, as well. A new casino hotel should open later in the year with 550 hotel rooms in Black Hawk. The more hotel rooms the better, where guest can circulate around our two cities with a good bus system. Gamblers like to move around and are always looking for machine or a blackjack table that is friendly to them.

What appears to be a dealer up card six, and a certain bust card, instead turns out to be a four or five, and the dealer flops a 20 or 21 wiping out players who might have wagered on the bus bonus featured on many blackjack tables.

With a good hand, it is still a good wager to play the bust bonus against that dealer five or six card. A dealer deuce 12 against a player 12 is one of the toughest calls a player has to make. I generally let the dealer hit rather than taking a card. It is very important to stay in the game and not bust.

ew Year’s is an ancient celebration that goes back at least as far as the Babylonians more than 4,000 years ago. Their New Year actually began in March on the first day of spring and was celebrated for several days. The Romans continued this tradition with the spring festival of Lupercalia, but their c a l e n d a r By Rosemary Fetter callieanne_9@msn.com eventually went too far out of synchronization with the sun.

In 46 B.C., Julius Caesar created the Julian calendar, arbitrarily establishing Jan. 1 as start of the New Year, partly to honor the month’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, had two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future.

Both the Babylonians and the Romans made promises to the gods at the start of the New Year, hence the modern New Year’s resolutions.

Romans celebrated by offering sacrifices to Janus, exchanging gifts, decorating their homes with laurel branches and holding or attending boisterous gatherings typical of the Romans. The New Year baby also dates back to the Romans, who used an infant to signify the rebirth of the god Dionysius, the god of wine and wild parties.

In fact, the New Year has always been associated with partying. Victorians celebrated the entire 12 days of Christmas, from Dec. 25 until Jan. 6, and social events were more often scheduled after Christmas rather than earlier in December.

The affluent generally welcomed the New Year with a formal dress ball on New Year’s Eve, which lasted nearly until dawn. Auld Lang Syne, was always sung at the stroke of midnight accompanied by a champagne toast, which became popular in France shortly after the French Revolution and the beverage of the elite in 19th century America. Poet Robert Burns created the modern rendition of Auld Lang Syne, published in 1796, from an old Scots tune. The words mean “old long ago,” or “the good old days.”

Immigrant groups brought their own New Year’s Day customs to America. From the English, Swedes and Germans comes the New Year’s Day parade, also known as the Mummers’ Parade. Originally staged to coincide with the rebirth of crops, the celebration stems from the European practice of houseto-house visits to present plays for money or treats on New Year’s Day. European farmers observed the occasion with a loud thrashing of drums and tooting of horns, ostensibly to frighten away evil spirits who might destroy their crops during the New Year. Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam initiated the first New Year’s Eve party, perhaps inspired by the Iroquois Indians, who would gather up clothes, furnishings and uneaten corn and toss everything into a huge bonfire to signify the beginning of a new year with new prospects and possibilities.

Many New Year’s customs can be attributed to old superstitions, like kissing your sweetheart at midnight on New Year’s Eve to keep you together eternally or making noise to scare away evil spirits – hence all the bells and whistles as the clock strikes midnight. Some people won’t wash clothes or dishes, on New Year’s Day for fear they might wash their loved ones (or their money) away during the coming year. It’s considered unlucky to borrow money or pay a debt on New Year’s or you will be borrowing (or broke) all year.

Some foods are thought to bring good fortune on New Year’s. Many cultures believe that anything in the shape of a ring brings good fortune because it symbolizes “coming full circle,” completing a year’s cycle. For that reason, the Dutch eat donuts on New Year’s Day. In the South, people often start the year eating black-eyed peas with either hog jowls or ham. Some say the superstition dates back to Colonial days, when cattle ate the peas.

If this didn’t work out, the settlers had to eat the peas. In many cultures, the hog is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity.

Cabbage is another lucky vegetable since the leaves are green, like money.

Whatever your beliefs, the holiday always signifies new beginnings and opportunities. So have a happy New Year, eat your blackeyed peas and save the laundry for later!
