Say ‘hello’ to Carlos at the Monarch

T

he Monarch g a r a g e is disappearing at a rapid pace as the brick parking building was carefully imploded and will give rise to a new Black Hawk hotel. Carlos, the con- BY BOB SWEENEY genial valet, at the Monarch is welcoming his many customers as they park with him. What an asset he is to the Monarch. He and his fellow valets are the first people to greet customers. It is the people behind the scenes that make these gambling casinos work—the lady in the elevator cleaning the glass, the cooks who prepare the fabulous buffets. Legalized gambling in Colorado has provided an estimated 10,000 good jobs and is one of the leading tourist attractions in the state. Along with these accomplishments, millions of dollars are paid into the

state treasury in gaming taxes, where some of the money goes to historical preservation and parks and recreation. The hotels can help both Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek, by having people stay overnight on weekends, and if the cities are smart they will promote mini-conventions in these facilities that will bring many new visitors to the area. My friends are shocked when I bring them up for a buffet or gourmet meal at many of the casino locations. Our mountain towns can offer great gaming, meals and entertainment. Gamblers and nongamblers have discovered the great food at reasonable prices and club-card members can usually eat for free or at a very reduced rate for prime rib, crab legs and all the trimmings. Fortunately, there is an app available for your cellphone to check phases of the moon, or you can invest in a copy of the Farmer’s Almanac. For a romantic boost, on the 17th night of the Storm Moon (February and March), those wishing to keep a love affair “hot” should light a white candle and put a lock of the loved one’s hair and his or her own in a red envelope sealed with candle wax. While drawing a heart around an ankh with a green felt pen, one should recite, “Bring life to my love, Let it grow into eternity, So mote it be.” Lousy poetry, admittedly, but it might be pretty steamy in the days to follow. restaurants, and the National Chicken Council says Americans eat 1.3 billion chicken wings during the game. Holy guacamole, Colonel Sanders! If that number is accurate, and I don’t see why the Chicken Council would lie about it, that’s enough wings for every man, woman, and child in America to eat four each. Now there’s something to crow about. In the crunch heard across America, four million pounds of pretzels, eight million pounds of popcorn and two million pounds of nuts are consumed during the Super Bowl. It’s a wonder anyone can hear the play-by-play. Add to that 28 million pounds of potato chips, which would make a trail 293,000 miles long if you laid them all out end to end, though I’m not sure why you would. It’s all washed down with

some 325 million gallons of beer, or enough to fill 493 Olympic-size swimming pools if you drained the water and poured it in. Don’t though. After spending the afternoon snacking and yelling at the television, a leisurely swim might be just what everyone needs. Is it any wonder there’s a 20% increase in antacid sales on the Monday following the Super Bowl and seven million employees call in sick for work? What isn’t clear is if they’re staying home to mourn a loss or because they overdid it on chicken wings and guacamole. Before I go any further, I have a disclaimer, which a better writer would have put at the top of this column. I don’t know who comes up with these numbers or how they do it, and the estimates vary widely. But when it comes to the food consumed on Super Bowl Sunday,

there is one indisputable statistic: It’s A LOT. In fact, I read that the average American will put away some 6,000 calories on Super Bowl Sunday. That’s two or three days’ worth for most of us, and we’re not even the ones running up and down the field. We burn some calories cheering, but probably not enough to break even. Stand up, sit down, bite, bite, bite! At any rate, now I know who’s facing off in Super Bowl 51. It’s the Americans versus the Scale. Go team! (Dorothy Rosby is the author of several humor books, including I Used to Think I Was Not That Bad and Then I Got to Know Me Better. Contact drosby@rushmore.com.)

thinking about poker

Better than a Poke in the Eye…

By Drew Chitiea

…with a sharp stick’ is how the rest of that famous phrase goes. Meaning: What has just occurred is better than that particular event, but not a whole lot. That phrase came to me as I was driving home from the second of two sequential days of poker fun. For once in the proverbial blue moon my schedule for days off abutted several days’ worth of enforced time off due to weather – so I had my days off and extra ones as well. Woo-hoo! After completing my chores du jour, I descended on the local Pokertorium for some long overdue time in the felted arena. Both days began in the $2 - $5 NLHE game and in short time moved me into the $30 - $60 limit HE game. I’ll write more on making that move another time, but it’s the next logical step; in past games, it’s treated me well. Looking back on both games played 24 hours apart it’s amazing how similar they were in view of my performance and the results of each days play. Both

days had a number of cycles – I’ll call them – where looking back I could see and [now] readily identify the separate dynamics of the game. Both games were amazingly similar in their style and content. Both games resulted in amazingly similar results. When I begin in a new game I tend to play quiet and conservative until I ‘make the table’, that is until I am able to read the players, their play style and get the dynamics of the table – especially if I join a game already in progress. Thereafter, can I begin playing the players in addition to playing my game. Who is a rock, who is a loose player? Who can be bluffed and who is a calling station? As you who have been reading this

column for some time, you know I focus partly on the mathematical probabilities of the game but reading people and using those reads to develop a strategy is equally if not more important to success in the game. In both games after the ‘Recon Period’ I began to move out aggressively into the hands I elected to play. Please recall that a good starting hand selection is one of the keys to developing a winning game. In both nights’ games, I then raked in chips to where I was

close to doubling up my starting stack. This process took about two hours. Then came a time where I either felt I was golden and began with too many weaker hands or the table was making me. My stack dwindled slowly down until I had about half my starting stack. This was the time I was mentally kicking myself for not departing when I was up twice my buy-in. But I had been there only two hours! I was reluctant to go back down the hill after so short a time. Doesn’t everyone in that position feel the same way? So, at half-stack I tightened up my game and slowly began the comeback. “Quit playing the marginal hands you had been, and straighten out your game” I say to myself. Now, after giving a lot of my chips away, began the dig-out period. Maybe it was due

to solid play, the possibility of the other players now thinking they could run over me with large bets, or just the fall of a friendly card now and then, but the digout period worked and I now was about half-again above my starting stack. I began to feel golden again. That was most likely the time I should have really thought about the game, where I was in said game and the possibilities for future improvement … or renewed loss. In both nights then I hit a plateau – and of course from there one can either rise anew or fall off the edge. In both evenings, I was aware I was again giving back chips; so, at about eight hours of play each night I racked up, cashed out for a little over $200 and a little under $200 respectively. $400 for 16 hours play = $25 per hour. Better than a poke in the eye … I’ll address game cycles and identifying them in another article, or two. In the meantime Keep thinking about poker! Have a great 2017!

Trail’s End

100th Anniversary of Buffalo Bill Cody’s Death

The Museum & The Grave With A View

One hundred years ago on January 10, 1917 William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody died in Denver. Years later, Cody’s foster son, Johnny Baker, set out to honor the life and legend of the Wild West icon. As a native of Colorado, I’ve been to the famous Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave atop Lookout Mountain, above Golden, many, many times. Over the years I have had the pleasure of working with the wonderful staff in research projects. It is much more than a museum, as their archives are the most incredible I have ever found, detailed, organized and available to any and all researchers. The life of America’s foremost Wild West icon, Buffalo Bill Cody, celebrated around the world, is exhibited in great detail at this fine museum. Behind the museum, atop a hill overlooking the town of Golden, is the burial site of William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody, and his wife, Louisa. The idea and nucleus of the museum came

PAGE 14

about in 1921, thanks to Johnny Baker, Cody’s foster son. Baker had been Cody’s closest associate in his personal life, as well as in his dealings with the Wild West Show since its inception. Baker was a sharp shooter in the show, and Cody’s arena director throughout Buffalo Bill’s World tours. Having appeared with Cody all over America and before the nobility of Europe, Baker shared in the many honors that came to the great Wild West shows. After Cody’s death in January 1917, Baker came into possession of most of Cody’s personal effects, including Cody’s silver mounted saddles, bridles, and guns. Cody’s clothing, including show jackets, and buckskins that he wore during performances, boots, gloves and hats, also came into Baker’s possession. Baker also had the last cartridge Cody fired from a gun, the coin he hit with that shot, the head of the last buffalo Cody shot, as well as a lock of Cody’s hair, and the receipt for the last money that Buffalo Bill had earned with his show. These possessions, along with the hat that Buffalo Bill had worn at his last public performance on November 11, 1916, all became the showcase of Baker’s tribute to the legendary life of Buffalo Bill Cody. To honor the life and legend of Buffalo Bill, in 1921, Baker opened the Pahaska Tepee, in conjunction with the City and County of Denver. Constructed on Lookout Mountain, near the site of Cody’s grave, the facility would house the exhibits of Cody’s possessions. Pahaska was Cody’s Indian name, given to him by the Sioux chief, Spotted Tail. Today, the Buffalo Bill Museum offers a unique array of extraordinary

exhibits related to the life of Buffalo Bill Cody. The exhibits provide a time line of Cody’s life, all with in-depth text panels, providing a wealth of information for the visitors. Beginning with his childhood years, the exhibit showcases his service with the Pony Express, still in his teen years, including his first revolver and a Bowie knife. His early life on the frontier, including the years spent as an Army scout are recounted with exhibits of his many guns, including a colt revolver, an 1873 Carbine, an 1873 Winchester, and an 1866 Springfield rifle, but it isn’t the famous “Lucretia Borgia.” According to Steve Friesen, director of the museum, that gun is in possession of the Buffalo Bill Center in Cody, Wyo. However, Cody evidently had a second 1866 Springfield rifle, featured in this exhibit, worn out, broken and with parts replaced backwards, all on full view. There are several exhibits showing his various dealings with the Native Americans. A display and interpretive panel recounts the battle at Summit Springs, Colo., where Cody reportedly, and by his own admission, killed Cheyenne chief Tall Bull with a “large Bowie knife,” and gained possession of the chief’s horse. Another display recounts the death of Yellow Hair. At the request of General Carr, in June of 1876, Cody boldly cut short his theatrical western performances, to again enlist his services to the U.S. Army. During this scouting assignment, Cody learned of Custer’s death at the Little Big Horn. Nearly a month later, on July 17, in a battle with Cheyenne Indians at Hat Creek, according to eye witness, Chris Madsen, Cody and Yellow Hair came face to face. Yellow Hair fired and missed, Cody’s horse stumbled. Cody dismounted, knelt, aimed and fired a bullet through the head of Yellow Hair. Cody then scalped the fallen chief. For years, the scalp of Yellow Hair was on display at the original Pahaska Tepee. According to Friesen, this particular display is now in Cody, Wyo., however relics and maps of the event are on display. Buffalo Bill Cody’s relationship

with the Native Americans evolved over his lifetime. Following the Indian wars, he later became an advocate for American Indians and befriended several, even before his Wild West Show days. His friendship with Iron Tail is documented with several photos, and was the inspiration for the Indian buffalo nickel. Cody’s friendship with Sitting Bull and Short Bull are also documented, with several displays of their personal effects, including a head dress and bow and arrows belonging to Sitting Bull. While the adventurous life of Buffalo Bill Cody b e c a m e well known throughout America, with the help of Ned Buntline’s dime novels and theatrical promotions, Cody ultimately gained his legendary status as the first and foremost showman of the world, through his Wild West Exhibitions. Throughout the museum are original posters of his Wild West shows, as well as celebrity paintings of the “Scout,” including those of Frederick Remington, and Robert Lenneoux. Exhibits

THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 25 Years

provide a visual chronology of Buffalo Bill’s life as a showman, including film footage of those days. Artifacts include his nickel-plated show gun, several dress clothing pieces, gloves and hats. Also included are displays of famous celebrities who performed with the Wild West Shows, such as Annie Oakley, Goldie Griffith, Texas Jack Omohundro, and Wild Bill Hickok. Rounding out a visit to the museum, is a short trip up the hill to the final resting place of William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody. Controversy, myth and legend have surrounded this picturesque burial site for decades. A very impressive display of photos of Cody’s funeral, held six months after his death, due to the frozen ground atop Lookout Mountain, show the somber scene, complete with an open casket ceremony. A trip to Lookout Mountain, the museum and the burial site of Buffalo Bill Cody, is indeed a trip through Western Americana, and a tribute to the man who made it come alive for generations.
