How to obtain tickets

• With a Festival Pass Light, Guest Pass, Forum Pass, Docs for Sale Acquisition Pass, Press Pass, or IDFAcademy Pass, you can attend the Industry Screenings without a ticket (first come, first served basis). You will need tickets for all other screenings and Meet the Makers. • Tickets can be obtained from the Guest Box Office in the IDFA tent. • With your pass, you can get free tickets for screenings for the same day or the following day. • If you want tickets for any days thereafter, there is a charge of €5 per ticket. • For holders of the Guest Pass Light, there is a charge of €7.50 per ticket. • Tickets for music documentaries plus concert can be obtained at the discount price. • At sold-out screenings, pass-holders (except Festival Pass Light-holders) can line up at the entrance to fill “no-show” seats (no ticket needed: first come, first served). • Please have your pass and ticket ready for inspection at all screenings. • There will be no admission after the starting time stated on the ticket. • Telephone reservations are not possible.

Your Pass also provides access to • the industry panels, talk shows and other

secondary programming; • the services of the First Aid Clinic on the first floor of the Schiller Hotel; • the awards ceremony and awards party on 25 November (a ticket can be obtainedfrom the Guest Box Office starting on 24 November); • the writing room with laptops and Internet access, located at Brasserie Schiller.

Films from the IDFA Competition for FeatureLength Documentary, IDFA Competition for Mid-Length Documentary, IDFA Competition for First Appearance, IDFA Competition for Dutch Documentary, and a selection of films premiering in the IDFA Competition for Music Documentary, IDFA Competition for Green Screen Documentary, and a Reflecting Images section will also be screened during Industry Screenings. In addition, the Dutch Film Fund will present eight Dutch films not included in the regular IDFA program.

To attend these Industry Screenings, you do not need to make any advance reservations, nor do we require any special tickets. All you need to do is present your pass at the door. (first come, first served). For the program, please see the day-to-day schedule in this program guide.

Press Desk

The Press Desk is located at Brasserie Schiller, Rembrandtplein 26. At the Press Desk, you can get information about the festival and arrange for interviews with filmmakers and other guests. At this location, there is also a writing room with laptops and Internet access available to press.

At Docs for Sale, located in Arti et Amicitiae, there will be six viewing booths available for holders of Press Passes.

Host Amir Labaki of Sao Paulo’s It’s All True Festival offers us 10 notes on the state of Brazillian documentary, while a Mardi Gras of Brazillian reality makers offer us competing schools of Documentary

These days, documentary filmmakers are taking up different popular, populist strategies - popdocs are taking hold. Hosted by Sean Farnell, former curator of Canada’s Hot Docs festival, this session will explore how contemporary documentary filmmakers now provide audiences with all the pleasure, drama, characters, humour, entertainment and action that fiction films once did. Popular docs are no longer just about causes and problems, the form of the message is as important as the message itself. Documentary makers are becoming better storytellers. The public is now part of the picture. Docmakers are helping people discern fact from faction in the audio-visual languages they understand, in the popular forms they want. Industry Panel: The Future of Documentary Financing

The budgets of documentary’s traditional financiers (television and film funds) for single television documentaries and feature length documentaries are shrinking - what are the alternatives for documentary makers to tell their stories? The countless workshops and pitch forums organised throughout the world give the impression that everything has never gone better in the creation and financing of documentary films. However in reality there are less documentary slots on television, and there is less money available from the traditional financiers. Moderated by Screen International’s Wendy Mitchell, experienced producers and other professionals will look in more detail at the current state of the documentary landscape. They will discuss topics as diverse as the future of television financing, alternatives to the traditional financiers (crowdfunding, NGO’s, VOD, etc.) and the use of alternative platforms (digital). Competition Programs IDFA Competition for FeatureLength Documentary

Seventeen feature-length documentaries are competing for the VPRO IDFA Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary. The VPRO IDFA Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary consists of a sculpture and a cash prize of €12,500. In addition, the jury may grant a Special Jury Award. The jury: Sandy Lieberson (USA), Dennis Lim (USA), Suzanne Raes (Netherlands), Moussa Sene Absa (Senegal), Laila Pakalnina (Latvia)

IDFA Competition for Mid-Length Documentary

Sixteen documentaries between 45 and 60 minutes are competing for the NTR IDFA Award for Best Mid-Length Documentary. The NTR IDFA Award for Best Mid-Length Documentary consists of a sculpture and a cash prize of €10,000, provided by Dutch broadcaster NTR. NTR Television will also buy and broadcast the winning film. IDFA DocLab Competition for Digital Storytelling

IDFA’s new media program DocLab (supported by the SNS Reaal Fonds) presents emergent forms of documentary, including online projects, live cinema presentations, video installations, mobile applications, and locative media. The IDFA DocLab Award for Digital Documentary Storytelling will be awarded to the DocLab project that employs digital technology in the most creative and effective way to tell a documentary story. The IDFA DocLab Award for Digital Documentary Storytelling consists of a sculpture and a cash prize of €2,500. The jury: Ingrid Kopp (USA), Rob McLaughlin (Canada), Martijn de Waal (Netherlands) The nominations will be announced on 23 November at the nightly Talk Show in Escape. The winners will be announced during IDFA’s Awards Ceremony on 25 November in Escape. All pass holders can pick up a ticket for the Awards Ceremony at the Guest Box Office starting on Thursday 24 November.

Mediafondsprijs Documentaire 2011

In the IDFA-Mediafonds Workshop, organized in cooperation with the Mediafonds (Dutch Cultural Media Fund), IDFA aims to discover and foster new documentary talent. Each year, in what has now grown into a complete seven-month course, aspiring documentary filmmakers learn to turn an original idea into a practical documentary film plan, ready to be made. The final versions of the film plans will be assessed by a jury of filmmakers and representatives of the Dutch broadcasters. On the opening night of IDFA, the winner will receive the Mediafondsprijs Documentaire (€125,000) for the most promising film plan resulting from the IDFA-Mediafonds Workshop. The workshop and the award are made available by the Mediafonds.

Blackberry IDFA DOC U Award

Each year, IDFA presents the DOC U program, aimed at introducing a young audience to documentary cinema. Eleven films from the IDFA program are selected, together with a group of young people ages 15 to 18. DOC U is also a competition program. A youth jury evaluates all DOC U films and will announce the winner during the official Awards Ceremony. The winner is presented with the Blackberry IDFA DOC U Award for the youth jury’s favorite film and a cash prize of €1,500. Steve James Retrospective

The American director Steve James is known for his personal style, investing himself in the lives of protagonists who are often trying to improve their lives on the bottom tier of society. In honor of his outstanding work, IDFA is presenting a retrospective that includes the well-known masterpieces Hoop Dreams, Stevie (winner of the IDFA Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary in 2002), and No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson, as well as his most recent film The Interrupters. In addition to the retrospective, IDFA is screening James’s Top 10 favorite documentaries.

Steve James’ Top 10

Each year, IDFA asks a renowned filmmaker to present his or her personal documentary Top 10. This year, the honor goes to the American filmmaker Steve James. Known for investing himself in the lives of his protagonists, James has included the classics Le joli mai (Chris Marker), Grey Gardens (Albert and David Maysles), and The Times of Harvey Milk (Robert Epstein).

Paradocs

Paradocs is a program in which the “periphery” of the documentary genre takes center stage. It showcases what is going on beyond the frame of traditional documentary filmmaking, on the borders between film and art, truth and fiction, and narrative and design. This year, Paradocs is featuring 23 films.

Kids & Docs

Kids & Docs is presenting 18 of the best new international youth documentaries. Nine of the selected titles are a result of the annual Kids & Docs Workshop, which offers directors the opportunity to develop a documentary for young people.

Cinema do Brasil Retrospective As part of Amsterdam’s Brazil Festival, IDFA highlights the development of the Brazilian documentary in the last decade with a selection of films by established masters such as Jose Padilha, João Moreira Salles, and Eduardo Coutinho, as well as works by promising young talents. This program is supported by the Netherlands

Film Fund - Central de Cultura and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.

Eduardo Coutinho Retrospective

Part of the Cinema do Brasil program is a retrospective of four films by Brazilian master Eduardo Coutinho, whose new film Songs was selected for this year’s IDFA Competition for Feature-Length Documentary.

Also part of the Cinema do Brasil program, this is a special section of Paradocs, the IDFA program in which the “periphery” of the documentary genre takes center stage.

Doc Next: D-I-Y documentary makers zoom in on Europe

With Doc Next, IDFA presents short documentaries by the next generation of makers. These do-it-yourself media makers are ready to represent Europe with fresh ideas, new forms of documentary and unexpected local heroes. Doc Next is a partnership between IDFA and the European Cultural Foundation (ECF).

Doc Next films are personal reflections that capture another side of Europe: what crisis means to young Greeks, nightlife in a London launderette, a Turkish immigration story, and the neighbor who knows everything about everyone in Warsaw. How do they deal with daily life? Which images of Europe do they reveal? IDFA scouts for new talent by visiting film schools, writings to broadcasters, and using international scouts. Many young filmmakers also know where to find IDFA and send their work directly to the festival. Through its Doc Next Network in several European countries, the ECF aims to give a voice to young people who are often excluded from sharing their views and stories with a broad public in mainstream media. Doc Next is a program of screenings, meetings and debate. Doc Next films are screened prior to feature-length documentaries in the main program. The 19th FORUM for the International Co-financing of Documentaries takes place in the Compagnietheater. The FORUM is Europe’s largest gathering of documentary financiers, television commissioning editors, and independent documentary producers. It stimulates the co-financing and co-production of new documentaries, enabling producers to pitch their proposals to assembled professionals and follow up with individual meetings. The FORUM is made possible with financial support from the MEDIA program and the Dutch Ministry of Education, Science and Cultural Affairs.

Docs for Sale November 18-25

Now in its 16th year, Docs for Sale is an extensive, internationally-oriented market for documentaries. Featuring more than 450 titles this year, the market takes place in Amsterdam’s art society Arti et Amicitiae. Docs for Sale offers digitized viewing services with 60 viewing sets, backed by an extensive database and catalogue. The documentaries viewed are recorded in the database, which can then be consulted by producers. Visitors to Docs for Sale are mainly buyers from international TV networks, festival programmers, and distributors looking for new documentary material.

Docs for Sale online

Through the Docs for Sale online platform, buyers and exhibitors can view documentaries whenever they want and wherever they are. This way, buyers and festival programmers who can’t make it to Amsterdam

still have the opportunity to catch up with the Docs for Sale selection. The Docs for Sale online catalogue contains titles selected for IDFA 2011, as well as older documentaries that don’t deserve to be left on the shelf. The catalogue is continuously updated throughout the year.

Jan Vrijman Fund

IDFA’s Jan Vrijman Fund has been supporting independent documentary filmmaking in Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe since 1998. This year, the Fund is presenting 15 new documentaries - a harvest that shows the diversity of filmmakers, regions, styles, and subjects that the Fund supports. The films are found in the different competition programs as well as in Reflecting Images: Masters, Best of Fests and Panorama.

The Fund’s involvement differs from film to film. It can be a small contribution to get a project started, such as in the case of Noosfera, a captivating portrait of sociologist Nicoalae Dumitru who preaches a theory about true love, and ¡Vivan las Antipodas!, Victor Kossakovsky’s breathtaking new work. In some cases, it was involved in both development and production, for instance with the critically acclaimed The Night Watchman, in which a graveyard is the setting for a serene look at Mexico’s excessive violence. Six filmmakers are presenting their directorial debuts. These include Citadel, an idiosyncratically filmed portrait of a Bolivian prison were inmates live with their families, and King Naki and the Thundering Hooves, which tells the story of a man’s persistence in pursuing a dream of wealth and victory to escape the treadmill of poverty. In addition to the 15 new films, the program also
