Virtual reality Bij de introductie van de film, eind 19e eeuw, kon het publiek niet geloven dat wat het zag (de binnenstormende trein van de gebroeders Lumière) niet echt was – mensen sprongen bijna op om weg te rennen. Eenmaal gewend aan de geregistreerde werkelijkheid werd al snel begonnen met het spelen ermee. Grenzen tussen de echte, gespeelde en gemanipuleerde werkelijkheid vervaagden – zowel in het genre speelfilm als in de documentaire. En naarmate de technologie voortschreed, bleek en werd het steeds gemakkelijker de geregistreerde werkelijkheid te verzinnen. Een snelle tocht op het internet toont ons dat mensen zich verstoppen achter profielen, dat collectieve verontwaardiging of waanzin heel simpel op verzonnen feiten gestoeld kunnen zijn, net als bewondering of angst. Toch blijft het lastig om wat ons wordt voorgeschoteld op het grote scherm – zeker als dat onder de noemer ‘documentaire’ gebeurt – niet als waarheid te beschouwen . Filmmakers als Ulrich Seidl spelen daar graag mee, door de realiteit een klein beetje naar hun hand te zetten , terwijl innovatieve creatieven als DocLabbers als Fredo De Smet en Christian Cherene compleet nieuwe werkelijkheden creëren die door het publiek ‘echt’ beleefd kunnen worden en weer anderen, zoals Joshua Oppenheimer, de realiteit van het verleden na laten spelen om een toekomstige werkelijkheid mogelijk te beïnvloeden . Uiteindelijk is alles wat we door andere ogen te zien krijgen subjectief, een interpretatie van de werkelijkheid. Dat levert soms prachtige films op, veel stof tot discussie en soms ook lieve plaatjes van de filmfestivalrealiteit zoals nog geen enkele bezoeker die beleefd heeft . Die uiteindelijk net zo echt of virtueel zijn als alles wat er op het festival te zien en ervaren is. Want bijna twee weken lang ondergedompeld zijn in documentaires, is dat niet de virtuele werkelijkheid in optima forma?

Balie-college I IDFA is even terug in de Balie, met onder meer de vertoning van That Sugar Film, waarin maker Damon Gameau een maand lang suiker eet om de gevolgen voor zijn gezondheid te ervaren. Eraan voorafgaand vindt een minicollege voedingswetenschap plaats van professor Jaap Seidell, bekend als expert op het gebied van overgewicht.

Balie-college II De dag erop geeft prof.dr. Gerard Ribbers, bijzonder hoogleraar neurorevalidatie een minicollege over het herstelproces na een hersenbloeding. Hij doet dat naar aanleiding en ter introductie van My Beautiful Broken Brain van Sophie Robinson en Lotje Sodderland, van wie de laatste als slachtoffer van een beroerte het onderwerp is van de film.

Geen publiek zo online als het DocLab-publiek, zelfs bij een live event in de Brakke Grond, over Love & Other Digital Sins, met echte mensen en hun virtuele projecten. Of was het een moment van massagêne, na de vraag wie van de aanwezigen mee zou willen werken aan een virtuele pornofilm?

Groen doen Zoals elk jaar is er een Green Screen Day op IDFA, met op donderdag 27 november drie documentaires uit de IDFA-programmering in de Brakke Grond Expozaal, geselecteerd door het Green Film Making Project.

Geïnteresseerd in biologisch-dynamische landbouw? Dan is Good Things Await (14:15 uur) van Phie Ambo iets voor u. Beeldschoon betrokken fotografie wereldwijd? Ziet The Salt of the Earth (19:30 uur) van en over Juliano Rebeiro Salgado met coregisseur Wim Wenders. Of toch maar gorilla’s? Virunga (16:45 uur) van Orlando von Einsiedel is een van de publieksfavorieten gebleken. Daarnaast wordt na de vertoning van Unearthed (12:00 uur) een discussie gehouden over de controversiële fracking-techniek, waarmee de Verenigde Staten de wereldwijde olieverhoudingen op hun kop heeft gezet.

De Uren van de Wolf NTR’s Het Uur van de Wolf staat al twintig jaar garant voor kunstdocumentaires van hoog niveau. Ter gelegenheid van het jubileum worden woensdag 26 november drie films vertoond op De Avond van de Wolf. Om 17:30 uur The Need to Dance van Peter en Petra Lataster-Czisch, over de Belgische choreograaf Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui; om 19:15 uur The New Rijksmuseum van Oeke Hoogendijk, over de jarenlange verbouwing van ’s lands belangrijkste museum; en om 22:00 uur Finding Fela van Alex Gibney, over afrobeat-meester Fela Kuti. IDFA goes West!

Traditiegetrouw slaat IDFA zijn vleugels tijdens het festival over de hele stad uit. In het westen strijkt het festival een aantal dagen neer in Podium Mozaïek aan de Bos en Lommerweg 191, waar woensdag tot en met zondag elke dag een selectie uit alle windrichtingen van het programma te zien

is. Woensdag zijn dat Warriors from the North (19:30) en The Dream of Shahrazad (21:15). Donderdag draaien War of Lies (19:00) en The Green Prince (21:15). In het weekend zijn vooral muziekdocumentaires te zien, waaronder Wolflady en Who the Fuck Is Jett Rebel.

Deense docs ‘Staged documentaries’ noemt de Deense filmmaker Jon Bang Carlsen zijn werk, waarvan de klassieker Hotel of the Stars (1981) en de korte nieuwe Cats in Riga op het festival worden vertoond. Het is een zelfgemunte term die niet ver weg staat van het begrip ‘hybride documentaire’, waarmee de afgelopen jaren de discussie over het gebruik van fictie-elementen in documentaires nieuw leven is ingeblazen. IDFA heeft de films van Carlsen opgenomen in het programma Framing Reality, waarin met name documentaires te zien zijn waarin de protagonisten, op de een of andere manier, zichzelf acteren. Als online spin-off wijdt IDFA.tv een retrospectief aan Jon Bang Carlsen, met naast Hotel of the Stars nog zeven ‘geënsceneerde documentaires’ van de ervaren Deense filmmaker. Te vinden via IDFA.tv en de knop ‘auteurs’.

Alweer het laatste Live Event van ­IDFA’s DocLab. In ‘Stories from the Digital Lowlands’ gaat het over bijzondere verhalen die op innovatieve manieren worden verteld. Er is een wereldpremière van de interactieve documentaire Refugee Republic van documentairetekenaar Jan Rothuizen, multimediajournalist Martijn van Tol en fotograaf Dirk-Jan Visser. Ontwerper Daniel Disselkoen presenteert zijn fotografie-app Cucalu en cabaretière en radiomaker Paulien Cornelisse en Chris Bajema vertellen wat hun favoriete radio- en multimediaverhalen zijn.

Radiomaker Katharina Smets (Radio in the Dark) praat de avond aan elkaar.

Verder vragen Mensen die er verstand van hebben praten na afloop verder over documentaires tijdens de Extended Q&A’s. Zo laat voetbaltrainer Henk ten Cate onder leiding van sportjournalist Barbara Barends zijn licht schijnen over het fenomeen Messi, na afloop van de gelijknamige documentaire op woensdag 26 november om 16:45 uur in Tuschinski 1. In Tuschinski 2 spreekt filmcriticus Peter Delpeut na afloop van Pixadores (11:30) met regisseur Amir Escandari en cultureel commentator Joyce Roodnat bevraagt regisseur Morgan Knibbe over zijn poëtische vluchtelingenfilm Those Who Feel the Fire Burning (14:30). Donderdag 27 november leidt Sunny Bergman haar eigen Our Colonial Hangover in en uit in Tuschinski 1 om 21:30 uur.

Zo extatisch en verbluft als IDFA-bezoekers reageren na het gebruik van de Oculus Rift, zo nuchter reageren professionele gebruikers Fredo De Smet en Christian Cherene. ‘Er wordt nog veel te weinig gebruikgemaakt van de mogelijkheden’, zegt die laatste. ‘Hier op IDFA hebben werken gelukkig wel vaak een diepere bodem, maar in veel projecten worden verhalen nog steeds lineair verteld.

Terwijl je met immersive reality parallelle verhalen kunt creëren, waarbij de kijker zelf de weg kan zoeken in het verhaal.’ De Smet voegt toe: ‘Als je voor de Oculus Rift gemaakte filmpjes op YouTube bekijkt, zie je vooral variaties op games uit de jaren negentig. Terwijl we verdorie een soort tijdmachine in handen hebben!’

Disneyland Er wordt nog te weinig geëxperimenteerd in de wereld van virtuele toepassingen, vindt het tweetal. Dat geeft niet, het is allemaal nog pril – elk kind leert door vallen en opstaan. Maar de opwinding over fysiek

aanwezig zijn in een digitaal landschap moet gauw plaatsmaken voor enthousiasme over het verhaal waarvan je deel uitmaakt, zeggen De Smet en Cherene.

Zo splinternieuw is virtual reality niet; maar in de jaren negentig zijn de ontwikkelingen ergens spaak gelopen. ‘In verzonnen werelden rondlopen bestaat al lang, kijk naar Disneyland of vliegsimulaties. Het gaat nu meer om een nieuwe manier van samenkomen, waarbij de verteller en toehoorder het verhaal delen’, zegt De Smet. Door er deel van uit te maken, eigen je je het verhaal toe, is de gedachte: beleef het en het raakt je dieper.

‘Virtuele toepassingen hebben nooit de weg naar de consument gevonden, omdat de kosten te hoog waren’, zegt Cherene. ‘Intussen is de gehele industrie op zijn kop gedraaid: op internet kan iedereen leren hoe je een programma maakt en financiering gaat via crowdfunding. Daardoor zitten we in een stroomversnelling.’ Vroeger was je afhankelijk van grote bedrijven die in je idee wilden investeren, zegt De Smet: ‘Nu nodigen reu-

zen als Disney en YouTube kleine creatieven uit om een weekend lang toepassingen te ontwikkelen.’

Lichaamswitch Cherene en zijn internationale collectief van kunstenaars en wetenschappers ontwikkelden vanuit standplaats Barcelona de machine die mensen van lichaam kan laten ruilen. Een optisch experiment, gelukkig, dat een hoop filosofische bespiegelingen genereert. Maar ook interesse wekt in medische hoek: ‘Psychologen en neurowetenschappers willen het gebruiken om zich in patiënten te verplaatsen. Het kan een praktische toepassing zijn.’

Het lichaam leek in ons digitale bestaan irrelevant geworden: ‘We kijken op onze telefoons en tablets, we zijn met onze gedachten op tien plekken tegelijk, maar het lichaam staat buitenspel. Met onze machine mag dat weer meedoen.’

Hoe ziet de toekomst eruit, als deze ontwikkelingen voortduren? Zitten we straks alleen nog in kale ruimtes met Oculus op

alles virtueel te beleven? Cherene rilt: ‘Wat je daar schetst, is mijn horrorscenario. Ik ben doodsbang dat het zich in die richting ontwikkelt. Ik hoop dat deze techniek gewoon iets toevoegt aan de werkelijkheid, dat je de bril gebruikt en daarna afzet om gewoon met vrienden aan tafel te zitten.’ De Smet knikt: ‘Real reality is just fucking great! De gemiddelde persoon gebruikt digitale toepassingen nog altijd om één reden: om samen te zijn met anderen, om dingen te delen. Kijk naar de hypes van drukbezochte muziekfestivals, of hier op IDFA: terwijl je juist deze dingen allemaal vanachter je computer kunt doen, willen mensen dat toch samen delen, desnoods door een foto op Facebook te zetten.

Dat is de uitdaging voor digitale creatieven, om op die drang in te spelen.’

Alles moet een ‘event’ zijn, zegt De Smet, en hij wijst op het IDFA-programma: ‘Zelfs een live event, haha! Hoe kan een event niet live

De één hielp een apparaat ontwikkelen waarmee gebruikers virtueel van lichaam wisselen; de ander gebruikte de interactieve 3D-bril Oculus Rift om geschiedenis tot leven te wekken. Maar ze hopen hetzelfde: dat de kijker verhalen intenser gaat beleven – en delen.

plaatsvinden?, vraag ik me dan af. Maar dat terzijde.’ De Smet vormt met collega Wim Forceville het collectief Fisheye. Ze creëerden voor de Oculus Rift het interactieve beeldwerk Ernst over de Eerste Wereldoorlog.

In de projectie van een originele loopgraaf in de buurt van Ieper (‘van de Duitsers, het schijnt dat Hitler er in zijn dienstjaren heeft gezeten’) trekt de bezoeker door de modderige gangen, waar gesproken dagboekfragmenten de emoties weergeven op het slagveld. De Belg ontwikkelde het werk pas een maand geleden en verwerkt nieuwe ideeën zelfs tijdens DocLab nog in het project.

‘Het is een complex proces. Sommige ideeën kosten bijvoorbeeld zo veel data, dat kunnen computers niet aan. Daarmee moet je rekening houden. Zo heb ik de wanden van de loopgraaf met de helft ingekort, omdat het te zwaar werd.’

­Disclosure in virtuele werelden rond te lopen?

‘Ik bedacht me pas een jaar geleden hoe cool ik dit had gevonden op mijn twaalfde’, lacht Cherene. Maar beide makers benadrukken dat ze geen game-freaks of IT-nerds zijn; ze hebben allebei een artistieke achtergrond (De Smet in theater, Cherene in visuals en system design) en hameren erop dat de techniek daaraan dienstbaar moet zijn. De Smet: ‘Ik ben geïnteresseerd in verhalen vertellen en virtual reality is de moeilijkste manier om dat te doen. Dat maakt het een uitdaging.’ Hij corrigeert zichzelf en wijst erop dat virtual reality een achterhaalde term is, die suggereert dat het de werkelijkheid vervangt. ‘Daarom is immersive een beter woord: je voegt iets toe aan de realiteit, het is een manier om je onder te dompelen in de werkelijkheid van een ander.’

Hoe zou hun droomproject eruit zien? De Smet: ‘Mijn droom is dat mensen mijn werk zien en geraakt worden, dat het een verschil heeft gemaakt.’ Cherene: ‘Ik hoop dat we als mens elkaar wat beter gaan begrijpen. De

techniek kan een hulpmiddel en startpunt zijn, maar uiteindelijk gaat het om de resultaten in de werkelijkheid.’ Cherene mist debat over de mogelijkheden van uitvindingen als de Oculus Rift. Hij hoopt dat daarin verandering komt door een experiment in Londen, waarbij een kunstenaar 28 dagen gaat leven met een Oculus op. ‘Hij zoekt nu nog financiering op de crowdfunding-site Kickstarter, maar als het lukt kan het een doorslaggevend project zijn.’ De Smet heeft bescheidener ideeën over de perfecte reality-ervaring: ‘De werkelijkheid waarin we nu zitten is voor mij perfect: een boeiend gesprek voeren, over en weer inspiratie opdoen. Eigenlijk is dit mijn ideale wereld.’

In Constantin Wulffs documentaire Ulrich ­Seidl – A Director at Work, ook hier op IDFA te zien, zegt u dat u per se geen extreme praktijken wilde laten zien. Maar iemand met een kelder vol nazi-parafernalia is tamelijk buitenissig.

‘Het gaat me om het normale. Dat je je als toeschouwer met deze mensen kunt identificeren en je gaat afvragen wat de duistere kanten in jezelf zijn. Niet iedereen heeft thuis een nazikelder maar in ons allemaal zit iets xenofobisch. Iets racistisch.’

U denkt dat die keldernazi echt racistisch is?

‘Hij maakt het onschuldiger, het racisme en het Duitse verleden. Maar ik ben er verder niet op doorgegaan. Ik heb bijvoorbeeld niet gevraagd wat hij over joden denkt.’

Wat zou u wel te extreem vinden?

‘Ik weet niet wat extreem is. Ik ben geïnteresseerd in alles waarin ik iets van mezelf

herken. Betrok jij niet op jezelf wat die sm-meesteres over haar man zegt, haar slaaf?

Ze noemt en vindt hem een zwijn. Ik heb gehoord dat veel vrouwen daar zo over denken.’

Worden mensen nooit kwaad als ze zien hoe u ze afbeeldt?

‘Nooit. Voor deze mensen is dit de waarheid.

Ze generen zich er niet voor.’

In Wullfs documentaire zien we u een scène opnemen met twee vrouwen die in de kelder pingpongen… ‘… dat is een tableau. Staat los van de rest van de film. Daar heeft Wulff trouwens een fout gemaakt. Eerst zie je ze met hun kleren aan pingpongen. Dan vraag ik of ze dat in hun bikini’s willen doen. Dat weigeren ze. Wullf kapt die scène af en in de volgende scène zie je toch vrouwen in bikini’s. Maar dat zijn andere vrouwen. Slecht gedaan. Heb ik hem ook gezegd.’

Die plumeau in de kleuren van de Duitse vlag waarmee de keldernazi zijn parafernalia en portretten afstoft, was die echt van hem? Het is bijna te mooi.

‘Ik heb van alles geënsceneerd. Feit is dat hij er echt van houdt om zijn kelder te poetsen.

Dat is zijn rijk. Z’n vrouw poetst boven, hij poetst de kelder. Of die plumeau van hem was weet ik niet meer. Hij zou ’m ook best van mij gekregen kunnen hebben. Maar ik heb niet dat portret van Hitler aan de muur gehangen.’

Vanwaar de symmetrie in alle scènes?

‘Weet ik niet. Misschien is het mijn katholieke opvoeding. In kerken doen ze ook alles symmetrisch.’

De film opent met een man die in z’n kelder staat te zingen. Waarom dat beeld?

‘Omdat het een mooie scène is. Daarin zie je de tragiek van zijn leven. Die man had

operazanger willen worden. In plaats daarvan zit ‘ie in z’n kelder met een zelfgebouwde schietbaan.’

En zegt: ik heb trouwens ook nooit geprobeerd om zanger te worden.

‘Hij is wel echt iemand die vaak zomaar begint te zingen.’

Weigeren mensen nooit wat u van ze vraagt omdat ze weten hoe ze in beeld worden gebracht?

‘Met zulke mensen werk ik niet. Als mensen weigeren komen ze niet in mijn film. Het is geen democratie.’

En daarom zitten die vrouwen in bikini’s niet in uw film.

‘We zijn ons verleden’

In The Act of Killing – over de massamoord op communisten in Indonesië – gebruikte Joshua Oppenheimer ensceneringen als een manier om de werkelijkheid te ontmaskeren. The Look of Silence borduurt daarop voort.

Hoe belangrijk is dat ensceneren in The Look of Silence?

‘Hoofdpersoon Adi ontdekte wie z’n broer vermoordde en ziet in beelden die ik al in 2003 maakte hoe de daders hun misdaden pocherig naspelen. Hij wil ze confronteren met hun daden, in de hoop ze spijt te laten voelen en ze te kunnen vergeven. Gevaarlijk, maar ik begreep dat The Act of Killing een podium had gecreëerd waarop zo’n gesprek kon plaatsvinden.’

The Act of Killing was dat we de nationale leugen onderuit konden halen door te laten zien dat voor de dader zijn leugen instort – al was dat maar in zijn lichaamstaal. Door het reframen van dat patserige discours van de daders, op de school van Adi’s zoon en in hun re-enactments, zou het niet meer te ontkennen zijn dat de sociale structuur in Indonesië verscheurd is en hoe dringend er waarheid en verzoening moet komen.’

Adi zegt dat ze opscheppen omdat ze spijt hebben. Dat vraagt nogal wat mededogen.

‘Ongelofelijk. Ik kwam pas veel later tot het inzicht dat opscheppen en spijt twee kanten van dezelfde medaille kunnen zijn. Opscheppen om trauma te verdrijven. Tegelijk had ik het beklemmende gevoel dat het iets systemisch was. Dat opscheppen was een gedeelde taal. Ik had het gevoel alsof ik in Duitsland was, veertig jaar na de Holocaust nadat de nazi’s gewonnen hadden en mijn [Amerikaanse, red.] regering en de rest van de westerse wereld de moorden hadden goedgekeurd.’

Kan er verzoening zijn?

‘Die moet er komen. We kunnen het verleden niet ontlopen. We zijn ons verleden.’

Je laat inderdaad zien hoe het verhaal van de winnaars – communisten zijn vuilnis en moesten vermoord worden – op scholen wordt onderwezen.

‘Mijn films zijn opgezet als interventies in dat regime van angst. Een reframing van de leugen. Het idee achter

Ze hebben het al decennialang geprobeerd.

‘En gefaald. Kijk hoe bang iedereen is. The Act of Killing was een film over de afwezigheid van gemeenschap, een land verdeeld door angst en wederzijdse achterdocht. Toch ben ik optimistisch. The Act of Killing lieten we in kleine zalen in het geheim in première gaan, nu hadden we twee uitverkochte screenings in het grootste theater van Indonesië. Waar Adi na elke screening een tien minuten staande ovatie kreeg en nu een nieuwe held van Indonesië wordt genoemd.’

The Machine to Be Another

El (muzikant) en Claire (filmmaker) uit Amsterdam

De rij wachtenden groeit gestaag bij The Machine to Be Another van BeAnotherLab, in de hoek van DocLabs Virtual Reality Screening Room. ‘Het is het waard’, constateren El en Claire, die hun virtual reality-ervaring net achter de rug hebben. ‘Het verdient nog wat nadere uitwerking, maar het basisidee is veelbelovend.’

Het stel moet even bekomen van het tien minuten durende experiment met de speciale Oculus Rift-bril. ‘Je kruipt als het ware in elkaars huid’, legt Claire uit. ‘De één gaat aan de ene kant van de installatie naar binnen en de ander aan de andere kant, maar dan wordt de één de ander en de ander de één. Je ziet de handen van de ander alsof het je eigen handen zijn.’

‘Op een gegeven moment was ik je handen kwijt’, bekent El. ‘Prompt kreeg ik de aanwijzing “Act slowly”.

Een kalibratieprobleempje, dat ook opspeelde toen ik onverhoeds mijn hoofd naar links bewoog.’

‘Ik ken je handen zo goed dat ik weet wat je voelt’, zegt Claire. ‘Daardoor is het vervreemdingseffect bij ons niet optimaal. Het wordt leuker naarmate je echt iets en iemand anders voelt. Als ik bijvoorbeeld aan mijn tieten zit, zou jij moeten voelen hoe het is om die te hebben.’

El: ‘Ja, er zit absoluut potentie in deze virtuele attractie.’ (PvdG) The Machine to Be Another – Be AnotherLab.

Draait er nog wat leuks?

Kopje onder in de liefde Giovanni (10) hoopt over vier jaar als allereerste jongen mee te doen aan het Nederlands kampioenschap synchroonzwemmen. Een man met een missie! Maar het blonde, aandoenlijk slissende knaapje bevindt zich in een meidenwereld, waarin volgens geheime codes wordt gegiecheld en wordt gewerkt aan de ultieme wedstrijdlook.

Giovanni blijft ondertussen noest oefenen op zijn split en het hoofd boven water houden tijdens de choreografie.

Het examen dat gaat bepalen of hij mag doorstromen naar wedstrijdniveau, komt snel naderbij. Zijn spaarzame vrije tijd brengt hij door met Kim, zijn verkering. Hoewel het duo van dat laatste niet altijd even zeker is. Is het eigenlijk nog aan? En wat houdt verkering hebben eigenlijk in? Giovanni, een tikkeltje twijfelend: ‘Dat je wilt trouwen met elkaar, later.’ Of dat ooit zover komt is de vraag. Het gaat,

zo zegt Giovanni, ‘ietsepietsje’ minder goed. En dan is er ook nog de zoenkwestie. Hebben ze nu wel of niet gekust?

‘Echt wel!’ ‘Niet!’ ‘Wel!’ Bovendien vindt Giovanni een ander meisje ook best leuk. Schrale troost: hij wil verkering met haar ná Kim. Waarop Kim verzucht: ‘Soms ben jij de raarste knul die ik ken, weet je.’ Ondanks alle relatiestrubbelingen staat juist Kim vierkant achter hem in zijn streven naar een glansrol binnen het synchroonzwemmen.

Kim weet het zeker: ‘Jij wordt de eerste jongenskampioen.

Framing

Beelden regeren de wereld. Toch wil het besef dat ze de waarheid niet laten zien er maar niet in.

Ceci n’est pas un terroriste.

Orson Welles begon en eindigde z’n carrière met een fantastische leugen.

Eerst was er in 1938 die radio-uitzending van War of the Worlds. Welles vulde deze met nieuwsberichten om het echt te laten lijken, waardoor paniek ontstond bij de luisteraars. In 1974 maakte hij z’n laatste voltooide fi lm, F for Fake, een fi lm over oplichters die zelf ook constant met de waarheid speelt. Het heet een documentaire te zijn maar haalt het onderscheid tussen fictie en feiten compleet onderuit.

Film is gelogen werkelijkheid en werkelijke leugen tegelijk.

Het IDFA-programma Framing Reality wil nog eens laten zien hoe vaag dat onderscheid tussen fictie en documen-

taire is. Het besef is al zo oud als fi lm zelf: in de docu-achtige actualités van de Franse broers Lumière die ze vanaf 1894 maakten, werd het onderscheid zelfs minder scherp getrokken dan we sinds 1975 doen, toen de gebroeders Maysles met Grey Gardens de cinéma vérité introduceerden. Jean-Luc Godard zei ooit dat elke fictiefi lm een documentaire van z’n acteurs is. Een andere Franse regisseur, Jacques Rivette, zei het preciezer en stelde dat elke fi lm een documentaire over z’n eigen totstandkoming is en een venster op de cultuur waaruit hij voortkomt.

Angst Ulrich Seidls In the Basement laat zich door de realiteit in ieder geval niet beperken. Seidl ensceneerde bijna alles. Dat wil zeggen de beelden, niet de feiten. Nou ja, sommige feiten. Zoals de plumeau in de kleuren van een Duitse vlag waarmee een man de naziparafernalia in z’n kelder afstoft. Die had Seidl misschien

gegeven, zegt ’ie. Gelogen werkelijkheid.

Is die enscenering een probleem? Zodra de camera draait, legt deze realiteit vast, hoezeer iets ook geënsceneerd is. Dat doet Seidl trouwens al langer. In Animal Love zaten compleet geënsceneerde scènes met geobsedeerde dierenliefhebbers.

Joshua Oppenheimer van The Act of Killing en The Look of Silence gaat verder, door de werkelijkheid na te spelen. Hij noemt z’n fi lms ‘interventies’ in de realiteit, die in Indonesië de leugen van het regime ontmaskerden met de inmiddels beruchte re-enactments van daders die spelen hoe ze in 1965/1966 hun slachtoffers vermoordden. De leugen dat het land vrede heeft met z’n gewelddadige verleden. En dat iedereen behalve de heersende klasse niet al decennialang in angst leeft. Volgens Oppenheimer heeft The Act of Killing een podium gecreëerd voor verdere verwerking. Een fi lm die zijn eigen werkelijkheid creëert en mensen in staat stelt verder te komen.

Rijker verhaal Lonnie van Brummelen en Siebren de Haan mixten voor Episode of the Sea de geschiedenis van Urk met de geschiedenis van fi lm. De zwart-wit beelden moeten het gevoel van neorealistische fi lms oproepen maar ze fi lmden geensceneerde taferelen, die net als bij Seidl uit de werkelijkheid gegrepen zijn. Zo konden ze na twee jaar draaien laten zien hoe het leven voor de vissers van Urk in de laatste eeuw veranderde. Zozeer zelfs – internationale wetgeving, schaalvergroting, overbevissing – dat de visserij in Urk dreigt te verouderen. Ingehaald door de tijd. Waarom ensceneren en niet gewoon registreren? Misschien omdat je door die interactie een rijker verhaal kunt vertellen. Misschien omdat de vissers dan meer acteurs worden dan figuranten. Misschien omdat je dan juist meer context kunt geven. Framing reality om die te verrijken.

Niet meer te zien.

Framing reality heeft ook een lugubere kant, die je ziet in films als Drone en CITIZENFOUR. Voor dronepiloten had het oorlogvoeren op afstand sowieso al veel weg van een game, maar om de kans op psychische problemen te verminderen is de herkenbaarheid van doelwitten nog verder teruggedrongen. Werd de realiteit nog verder reframed en ontmenselijkt.

Terwijl door die drones juist over leven en dood beslist kan worden, over zijn of niet zijn. Ook het datadelven door geheime diensten en het vaststellen van profielen aan de hand van die data creëren hun eigen realiteit, met reële consequenties – zonder proces vastzitten op Guantanamo of op een zwarte lijst komen en bij elke vliegreis worden vastgehouden, zoals CITIZENFOUR-regisseur Laura Poitras.

Net als de dating-app Tinder trouwens, ook een reframing van reality. Eentje die iemands werkelijkheid reduceert tot een paar foto’s en een paar zinnen beschrij-

ving en tot basale vegen over een scherm waarmee je mensen goed- of afkeurt.

Contact zonder context.

Data maken een verhaal van mensen, maar wel een gebrekkig verhaal, een verarmde realiteit. Een afbeelding van een pijp is nog geen pijp. Ceci n’est pas un terroriste.

Vlaggetje Michael Palm maakte in 2011 de documentaire Low Definition Control, over bewakingscamera’s waar steeds vaker geen bewaker meer achter zit, maar waar patroonherkenningssoftware bepaalt of iemand zich verdacht gedraagt.

Sta je te lang stil in een winkelcentrum, gaat er een vlaggetje omhoog.

Dat is relatief onschuldig, maar het is wel een realiteit die geen rekening houdt met werkelijke motieven, waarin de context ontbreekt. Een reframed virtual reality waarop je geen grip hebt maar die wel dramatische gevolgen kan

hebben. Waar menselijkheid zo veel mogelijk is uitgehaald. Oppenheimers fi lms doen het tegenovergestelde: ze creëren een context waar die was weggemoffeld. Ze brachten menselijkheid terug in het collectieve bewustzijn van Indonesië.

Beelden regeren de wereld. De laatste fi nanciële crisis ontstond omdat de virtuele economie – te veel schulden door te veel verstrekte hypotheken – te veel was losgezongen van de realiteit. Net als de door drones gevoerde oorlogen en de profielschetsen van geheime diensten, draait de wereldeconomie grotendeels op beelden die de werkelijkheid gebrekkig representeren. Beelden die verhalen vertellen waar de personages uit die verhalen nul invloed op hebben.

Aan dergelijke reframing van reality zitten grote risico’s. Welles zei het zo in F for Fake: ‘Any story is almost certainly some kind of lie.’

Van buitenaf en van binnenuit

Als een olievlek verspreiden terreurorganisaties zich over het Afrikaanse continent: Al Qaida breidt uit naar Mali, Boko Haram heerst in Nigeria en Al Shabaab houdt na Somalië nu ook Kenia in zijn greep – mede dankzij jonge, westerse jihadstrijders.

Vierentwintig slachtoffers sleurt Abdi mee, onderweg naar zijn paradijs. Tijdens de diploma-uitreiking van een groep artsen ontploft het bomvest van de knul uit Kopenhagen; de feestzaal van het hotel in Mogadishu verandert in een bloedbad.

Jongerenwerker Nasib Farah hoort van de aanslag en schrikt.

Hij kent Abdi wel, ze groeiden samen op in Kopenhagen.

Hoe heeft zijn vriend zo ver kunnen komen? Binnen de Somalische gemeenschap wil niemand erover praten: de ouders niet omdat ze zich schamen voor hun zoons; de ex-jihadstrijders niet uit angst voor stigmatisering.

Na anderhalf jaar weet Farah een van hen te overtuigen en samen met fi lmmaker Søren Steen Jespersen houdt hij

urenlange gesprekken met de voormalig jihadist die ze ‘Shadowman’ dopen. ‘Hij merkte dat het hem hielp de episode achter zich te laten’, zegt Farah. ‘Het luchtte hem op om erover te praten.’ De twee regisseurs hopen dat hun fi lm islamitische jongeren en ouders stimuleert om te praten over dit onderwerp: nu het werkterrein van terreurorganisaties in Afrika zich meer en meer uitbreidt, blijven organisaties actief ronselen. ‘Jonge westerse moslims zijn zeer gewild vanwege hun geschoolde achtergrond, kennis van moderne media en computervaardigheden’, vertelt Farah. ‘Zo kunnen ze fi lmpjes van zelfmoordaanslagen wereldkundig maken.’ Daarnaast zien terreurorganisaties het recruteren van deze jongeren ook als een triomf op het Westen, vult Steen Jespersen aan, dus het stopt voorlopig nog niet.

Het zijn vooral politieke maatregelen die het debat beheersen, zoals afpakken van hun paspoort. ‘Als je van plan bent om een zelfmoordaanslag te plegen, kan dat je weinig schelen’, lacht Farah. ‘Je bereikt hooguit dat deze groep zich nog meer buitengesloten voelt. Politici kunnen zich beter afvragen waarom jongeren zelfmoordterrorisme overwegen als alternatief voor een leven in Kopenhagen.’ (OvD) Warriors From the North – Nasib Farah en Søren Steen Jespersen.

Afrika: schitterend en uitgestrekt continent met een tragische geschiedenis waar Europeanen moeilijk zonder schuldgevoel naar kunnen kijken. Neem Congo. Wie wil weten hoe het land met de rijkste bodemschatten en het grootste aaneengesloten oerbos van heel Afrika er tegenwoordig voorstaat, kan op IDFA een kleine fi lmtour samenstellen. Beginnend in Kinshasa, waar de deplorabele staat van de publieke sector valt af te lezen aan de doodse stilte die heerst in een vervallen postkantoor, een brandweerkazerne en een spoorweghuisje (Elephant’s Dream), terwijl op straat in de behoefte aan spektakel wordt voorzien door excentriek uitgedoste worstelaars (35 Cows and a Kalashnikov). Wanneer we naar het oosten trekken komen we in Virunga National Park, het laatste overgebleven leefgebied van de berggorilla, dat door een groep gedreven mensen met hand en tand wordt beschermd tegen stropers en mijnbouwers, die geweld niet schuwen om alles uit het gebied te kunnen halen wat maar geld oplevert. We zitten hier in de grensstreek waar twintig jaar geleden, ten tijde van de bloedige etnische zuivering in buurland Rwanda, belaagde Tutsi’s naartoe vluchtten.

Enkele jaren na die dramatische gebeurtenis zocht Hubert Sauper hen op en maakte Kisangani Diary, terwijl Gilbert Ndahayo in The Rwandan Night laat zien dat de wonden van toen nog altijd schrijnen. Hij weet tot in pijnlijk detail waarover hij het heeft en levert anders dan de makers van de hierboven genoemde fi lms een blik op Afrika van binnenuit. Die blik wordt op IDFA verder vertegenwoordigd door Hajooj Kuka (Beats of the Antonov), Victor Ghizaru (A Day at School), Ryley Grunenwald (The Shore Break) en Jolynn Minnaar (Unearthed). Misschien zijn zulke lokale verhalen wel het beste antwoord op de historische erfenis waarmee Afrika is opgezadeld. Want terwijl je gerust heel schuldbewust mag stellen dat kolonialisme een vorm van geweld is (Concerning Violence), moet dat niet blind maken voor het feit dat nieuwe kolonisatoren (We Come As Friends) de draad allang weer hebben opgepakt. Safari is kleiduiven schieten vergeleken bij de leeuwenjacht van de Gao. Hun intensieve voorbereidingen en rituelen maken het doden tot een bijna religieuze daad.
