A joint letter from the Head of School and President of the Board During the past several months University Lake School has benefited from many wonderful new developments.

The school has designed and implemented a new education plan, renovated and reopened the Stackner Middle School building, and conceived and completed the Campus Green Project — an effort to move the school’s system of roads and parking areas to the campus perimeter while crafting a safe, green, walking campus. Having completed these initiatives, our school now enjoys a stronger set of strategic advantages and stands poised for future growth.

Despite all of these changes, the time-tested traditions and truths residing in the heart of the ULS experience remain strong. The Green and White Competition, Barn Sale, school concerts, musicals, athletics, and school leadership trips continue to deliver the same personal, unique value that has existed as part of a ULS education for the past 55 years.

Our school’s commitment to providing an exceptional education to Lake Country sons and daughters has not waned. ULS remains dedicated to offering a constructivist, liberal arts model of education; a participatory approach in which every student serves as a scholar, field researcher, athlete, performing artist, community servant and peer leader. Now, more than ever, our teachers, administrative staff, board of trustees and community of parents remain deeply committed to ULS, for they steadfastly believe in its mission of serving as a college preparatory school of high standards.

In these trying economic times, it is particularly critical for our community to pull together to ensure the school’s budget is fully funded beyond what is received in tuition income through the support of its donors.

Because the cost of a ULS education far exceeds tuition, we rely on Annual Giving pledges and fundraising events like the Barn Sale and Spring Auction to ensure the continuation of small classes, state-of-the-art instructional technologies, no-cut athletics programs, incredible visual and performing arts classes, and dozens of related offerings that combine to make ULS such a uniquely engaging and compelling school.

fter finishing the traditional super relay and tug of war during University Lake School’s annual Field Day on May 20, hundreds of children dressed in green and white, covered in grass stains and a little sunburnt, ran to the top of Hawk Hill to see the realization of the school’s 55-year-old dream: a Campus Green. They were met by a humongous bulldozer, a dozen shovels, and many hard hats for the project’s ground breaking.

In 1956, the founders of University Lake School, along with the school’s architect, Maynard Meyer, envisioned an amazing learning space atop Hawk Hill among the 180 acres of woods and prairies for outdoor classes, play, and community events.

The dream was rekindled by Barbara and Tim Michels, a current ULS family. They proposed turning the massive parking lot into a Campus Green just as the founding families had dreamed. “We are so passionate about ULS. We think this project will help highlight the beauty of the campus, become a much safer space for the children when arriving and playing at school. It will truly become yet another amazing outdoor learning space for the students at ULS,” the Michels said.

Thank you to the Michels family and to our other Campus Green donors for helping make this decades-old dream come true. Work was completed this summer, and this fall ULS students and their families put the final touches on the project during Family Bulb Planting Day. The entire ULS community is excited about the possibilities for learning, sharing, and building community in the beautiful, new natural space at the heart of our campus.

Branches of the Pine Intellectual Curiosity

Our new Spring Intersession Courses in the Upper School perpetuate the “Intellectual Curiosity” Branch of the Pine by engaging students in unique courses for credit. Every intercession course will extend discovery beyond our campus and provide hands-on opportunities for learning, leadership and service. The courses will integrate the following components into every trip: academics, service learning, leadership activities, cultural immersion experiences, and a rich experiential approach. Students at ULS are required to attend the at least one trip per year as a graduation requirement.

The courses offered this spring are: “Costa Rica Environmental Science/Ecology and Spanish Language” A 12-day trip to Costa Rica that includes turtle patrols, reforestation, Bri-Bri Tribe visit, organic farming, a stay on dairy farm, local school visit, and more! Led by Ann Mocchi (US Spanish) and Steve Tomasini (US Biology & Environmental Science).

“New York City Arts and Cultural Study” This New York intersession trip offers our students an opportunity to experience arts and culture in the Big Apple. The group will spend four days touring art museums and landmarks, attending the symphony and other music performances, as well as experiencing theater both on and off Broadway. Led by David Bielot (Fine Arts 7-12), Rhonda Huckstorf (US English & Drama) and Vicki Taylor (Choral Arts 7-12).

“Professional and Business Ethics and Leadership” Students will explore the current trends in large corporation and small business leadership philosophy and practice by meeting with the CEOs of a variety of for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Students will

“Criminology” Students will work with Brian Dorow, chair of the internationally recognized Law Enforcement Department at Waukesha County Technical College, who will guide them to intelligently and critically consider personal, financial, and social aspects of crime and the criminal justice system. Experiences may include a crime scene investigation study, a day in the legal system, discussion of homeland security, and law enforcement training. Led by John Fritzke (US Economics) and Ron Smyczek (Upper School Head and Chemistry).

“Character Through Service” Students will have the opportunity to work as a group with an organization like Habitat for Humanity, Hunger Task Force, MACC Fund, and Growing Power.All need significant contributions to make the most of their resources. Students can begin realizing that no matter the size of the contribution, the time and effort they can offer will make a major difference to others in need.

The student group will collaborate to make the decision on the location and organization that will make the greatest impact. Led by Mark Bronner (US AP Math).

“A Sense of Place: Wisconsin Authors and Landscapes” Students will have the chance to study area sites that capture the settings of books, from the mansion of Jay Gatsby to the shack inhabited by Aldo Leopold. Led by Patrick Mulrooney (US AP English).

Original Thinking For the second year in a row, University Lake School faculty and high school student volunteers hosted students from the United Community Center in Milwaukee. ULS students led more than 50 students from UCC (all recent eighth grade graduates) through a series of activities that promote teamwork, collaboration, and self-esteem. The activities are part of the ULS leadership curriculum, which is taught throughout the elementary, middle, and high school years.

“Having ULS students run these activities for other kids helps solidify the leadership concepts they’ve learned over the years,” says Mrs. Nancy Bicha-Dale, leadership teacher at ULS. “Not only does it fit with our philosophy of hands-on learning, it also supports one of the core values of the school: original thinking and developing character through service to others.”

This “original idea” and our partnership with the UCC has now grown beyond this one-day experience into an opportunity for students from the UCC’s Bruce Guadalupe Middle School to consider ULS as an option for high school.

This fall members of the Leadership Team took part in the UCC’s High School Fair, where they met bright, articulate eighth grade students and their families and told them about the benefits of a ULS education. The connection has resulted in tours, shadow visits, and admissions applications from several Bruce Guadalupe students. “We are so enthusiastic about building a relationship with Bruce Guadalupe Middle School,” said Angie Wenger, director of admissions. “The school is committed to providing students a wonderful elementary education, and their students are bright, articulate, and engaging. It has been rewarding to develop a connection with their students and families, and we are excited about all the wonderful gifts their graduates will add to the ULS Upper School community.”

also investigate university and private college degree programs that prepare students as leaders in business. Led by Nancy Bicha-Dale (Leadership and Guidance) and Tim Horner (Business and Finance).

Personal Integrity After saying “We pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America” every morning, ULS second-graders were inspired to create their own pledge. They began by brainstorming ideas in small groups and then brought all their ideas together. It wasn’t always easy agreeing about the words to include in their pledge. The second-graders voted democratically for which words were the most important to include. They chose to use the word “promise” rather than pledge because “we understand it better.” They created a second grade flag to go with their pledge.

They found it as difficult as creating their promise to ULS. They started with individual sketches and then compared their drawings to see what elements they had in common and all the interesting ways to symbolize their class and school.

This in-depth study of creating a pledge and flag has taught our second-graders that integrity is a very important quality when creating something that is very meaningful to them as a group.

They have learned to be patient and embrace each others’ opinions, yet hold strong to their own voice, and keep great integrity throughout the process of building their second grade community.

Character Through Service The 54-year-old tradition of Character Through Service of the annual Barn Sale began again last spring with our traditional Green and White Competition for drop-offs of items gleaned from closets. That led to a summer full of sorting and organizing by our 80 department heads (past ULS parents, grandparents, alums and current parents). In the fall, students, both little and big, served with their classmates, teachers and parents. Our tent dads raised tents and set up parking. Each and every one of our students volunteered for the Barn Sale. Students in grades 1-8 spent two hours with their teachers and parents down at the Barn. I can still see Helen Ring (87-year-old alum parent and Men’s Department Head) teaching Nick Gmur (ULS fourthgrader) how to measure the length of men’s pants.

The second and fourth grade students prepared more than 80 goody bags as a thank you to each Barn department head for working tirelessly all summer. I can even still

smell all of the cookies, brownies and caramel apples our Lower School students made and delivered to the bakery department. The Barn Sale ended with more than 300 parents, students, alums, and faculty serving food, cashiering, and baking our famous ULS Apple Crisp. It left us all with high, high spirits, a few tired muscles, and lots of smiles as we realized once again how special our ULS community is.

We raised $125,000 for financial aid and scholarships. More importantly, we provided our wider community with great items at really good prices. Our neighbors in the community in which we live truly benefit from the Barn Sale. Sweaters,

boots, and socks found new homes, and any items that did not sell were packed up in four huge trucks and donated to a church in downtown Milwaukee to be distributed to those in need.

LOWER SCHOOL

Lower School Head Lower School teachers have been focusing on the best ways to make learning exciting. Through student interaction and mentoring, professional partnerships, new spaces, and revised teaching methods, the Lower School is an exciting place to be.

Lower School classes are led by co-teaching teams, which allow for dynamic and fluid lessons as well as attention to students’ individual needs and interests. Combining classrooms has doubled the usable space for elementary grades and our new furniture fosters more student collaboration. Many teachers, students, and parents have already expressed appreciation for improved student-led research, deeper academic study, and various methods of display and documentation. Our partnership with Alverno College has also brought several opportunities for on-campus professional development.

We are also experiencing a rich interaction among divisions.

Exciting connections happen when students are given the chance to share what they know. Middle School Spanish students led a weeklong preprimary unit. Upper School literature students assisted second-graders with editing their entries for Fright Write, an all-school writing contest.

These interactions are meaningful and powerful. They help us build a strong bond, concentrate efforts toward common goals, and gain the true sense of community that is characteristic of ULS. The recently elected Student Council is developing projects that inspire Character Through Service and is planning several activities that will involve Lower School students.

New spaces have allowed teachers and students to work in even more creative ways. The STEM lab has been fully equipped and has hosted great moments of exploration, research, and learning. The new Academic Support Room has become a resource room housing our collections of books. The Spanish room is equipped with a Smart Board

and lots of educational resources. Stay, Study and Play has space for students to play together and for those to do homework after school.

Lower School preprimary students are the most curious explorers. They enjoy the outdoors and daily express their connection to the nature that surrounds them. In the classrooms they learn about themselves while listening to stories, drawing self-portraits, or cooking. Sharing the lunch table with their older buddies is also an important part of the day for preprimary children.

Children in first through fourth grade start the day with classroom meetings that allow each student to share myriad thoughts and ideas, which offers students the opportunity to be actively engaged in the process, show ownership of the daily schedule, and understand the importance of each individual for the good of the group.

Elementary grades take turns planning and leading weekly assemblies, showcasing important ongoing projects and results. Students have learned the meaning of each branch of the pine and how to identify when someone has showed us an example of one of the branches. Music opens and closes each assembly where students reach out to each other when they sing the all-school song that says, “together joining hands.”

Together joining hands we move forward through joyful learning experiences, by learning who we are and what we mean to each other.

We join hands to understand the environment that surrounds us. We learn how to respect it and how to make it better. Hand in hand we sing, we think, and share our thoughts. We have visions of a better world that starts right here at this very moment because we are building it together.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Middle School Head/Head of School The refurbishing and reopening of the Stackner Middle School building this year is a tremendous growth opportunity at ULS as the new facility provides the perfect setting to clearly recognize the unique sensibilities of the middle school child.

Middle school students are rapidly transitioning from childhood to adolescence, and matching a learning environment that complements this special developmental period is of paramount importance.

During the middle school years, ULS teachers gently raise the level of academic structure and rigor while incrementally increasing their expectations of students.

This is accomplished, in part, by separating fifth through eighth grade students into two distinct populations within the Stackner.

In the east wing of the Stackner building, fifth- and sixthgraders are led by two teachers for each grade who facilitate core academic classes and integrate subjects that are traditionally taught as separate disciplines. For example, teachers can combine subjects like science and math; language arts and social studies can also be taught in a complementary manner. During the course of the day, fifth and sixth grade students have larger blocks of time to pursue their ideas; the act of shifting from class to class is intentionally minimized. Physical education, Spanish, and fine arts teachers from the Lower School also serve these younger middle school students, helping them maintain a strong social-emotional connection with the Lower School faculty, facilities and students.

In the west wing of the Stackner, the learning environment deliberately shifts for seventhand eighth-grade students. In preparation for the rigors of high school, students move to a departmentalized learning model in which separate instructors teach a core academic subjects.

Personal organization and time management skills are emphasized and developed, while social opportunities, team sports programming, and leadership responsibilities increase.

Higher-level fine arts and physical education classes are taught by Upper School teachers in the Treiber Fine Arts Center and Brumder Gymnasium facilities, exposing seventh- and eighth-graders to our fantastic Upper School programming. Each seventh and eighth grade student is

assigned a personal notebook computer to promote the development of digital inquiry, publishing, and presentation skills across the curriculum, which will continue as they progress to the Upper School.

Every middle school student engages in service learning endeavors that bind classroom learning experiences with service to the community. Our students regularly mentor and teach younger students in the Lower School, participate in environmental service projects, and share ideas and energy at sites like the Barn.

Our child-centered approach combined with multiple opportunities for the authentic assessment of learning provides unlimited possibilities for the developing preadolescent or early adolescent student. Our optimal teacher-to-student-ratios provide repeated opportunities for students’ voices to be heard and leads to the development of a sophisticated, confident learner who can successfully navigate his way through high school and beyond.

Indeed, the long tradition of providing a quality middle school foundation has been fundamentally strengthened with the reopening of the Stackner Middle School building. Every day our middle school delivers a 21st century education that fully develops the potential within each and every student.

We are thrilled to be once again nurturing minds within this wonderful and historic building, and we look forward to doing so for many more years to come.

Upper School Head The Upper School has the charge of completing the college preparation process for the oldest ULS students and subscribes to the philosophy of finding the college that will best fit the student.

Ideally, the process occurs over many years. Whether a ULS student for one year or a “lifer” of 14 years, the hard work and preparation that take place in the Lower School and Middle School, are now “on the record.” More often than not, after transferring into the Upper School, a student often will confide that he would have been better off at ULS for his entire academic career. Many parents comment they wish they had gone to a school where they would have played sports, been expected to get on the stage or lead an assembly, and experienced the field trips and had discussions that bring their education into context.

Teachers can help to develop positive and healthy patterns as the student emerges from this transitional period in his or her life.

As teachers work with students to master their lessons of trigonometry or literary analysis, or develop secondary colors in a painting, their intellectual development is the template for each activity. UPPER SCHOOL

Engaging teachers present material in all disciplines and recognize the need to construct the school experience to be relevant and motivating. School size is a great advantage in this aspect of Upper School life.

Teachers go to great lengths to recognize students’ strengths, and help them to identify, understand, and address their weaknesses.

It is imperative that teachers model honest communication and feedback. In being part of a team raising these children, teachers certainly assess academic progress. But a larger task These lofty ideals work perfectly in the abstract, but in the messy, day-to-day world of adolescent living, there are bound to be missteps. Staff reaction to these events has a great influence on how the student can handle successes and failures.

The bottom line in nearly all of the guidance rendered at ULS comes down to doing what is best for the student’s development, and ultimately a successful adult life.

The women’s field hockey team featured three “lifer” seniors: Piper Rosenheimer, Victoria Mount, and g o a l k e e p e r Kate Seiberlich. Allconference selections went to Piper, Victoria, Kate, junior Hannah Glavas, and sophomore Sarah Brownell. In addition, the team travelled to St. Louis for its regular preseason tournament and advanced to the state semifinals after defeating Kettle Moraine High School.

The men’s soccer team finished a strong season behind senior goalkeeper and captain Sean O’Neill. Sean and senior cocaptain Stevie Johnson earned all-conference awards, and led a new midfield squad that boasts several up and coming freshmen and sophomores.

The women’s volleyball team earned a fourth-place finish in the conference behind senior Kaylen Podjaski and sophomore Marie Mulvaney. Marie and Kaylen were both named to the all-conference team; Kaylen was also voted to the conference all-tournament team.

The men’s basketball season extended into the second round of the state playoffs, though the team lost to eventual regional champion Lake Country Lutheran. The men advanced by earning an upset win in the first round behind seniors Chenzo Scampini, Jack Muzzey, Quinn Dolan and captain Sean O’Neill. Sean was also selected to represent ULS on the all-conference team.

The women’s basketball team capped its very successful season with a conference championship. Senior captain Kaylen Podjaski won all-conference honors and became the school’s alltime leader in 3-point shots made.

The alpine ski team had a very successful season, with the women’s team finishing in third place at the state championships at Mount LaCrosse. The team was led by two seniors in Piper Rosenheimer and Shelby Bourdo, with a possible second-place finish up for grabs until the very last run.The men’s team was led by senior Stevie Johnson who also qualified for state as an individual for the second year in a row.

The Laker Cross Country squad was paced once again by unflappable and unstoppable Molly Seidel, who finished her junior season with her third consecutive cross country state championship in Wisconsin Rapids. Molly’s sister Isabel also qualified for the state meet as a freshman, with Isabel finishing in eighth place overall.The men’s team was led by senior stalwart Quinn Dolan.

The 2011 coed tennis team finished a stellar singles season with a 41-8 record, with wins against St. Francis and Westosha, and a 1-point loss to Jefferson High School. Seniors Quinn Dolan, Chenzo Scampini, and Victoria Mount competed as one, two, and three singles respectively. Junior David Wean competed in the number four singles slot.

The women’s soccer team once again competed as a co-op with Lake Country Lutheran, and the girls were crowned WIAA regional champions behind senior Kaylen Podjaski.

The team finished lost a double-overtime heartbreaker in the sectional playoffs against Mayville. The Lightning/Laker squad also won the LCL Quad Invite for the second year running.

The golf team fought trying weather in 2011, but persevered to win the Indian Trails Conference Championship behind seniors Sean O’Neill and Stevie Johnson and juniors Maddie McFadden and Saad Khan. Sean was also the first state individual qualifier in school history after he secured a spot in a three-man playoff at the sectional meet. On the first playoff hole, Sean drove his ball into the middle of the fairway and drained a birdie putt to be the first to move on.

The 2011 track season featured sister superstars Molly and Isabel Seidel and Piper and Maisie Rosenheimer. Team “Seidel-Heimer” qualified for the state meet in the 3200M Relay and eventually finished in fourth place overall. Isabel also qualified as an individual in the 1600M run, and Molly capped another unbelievable season as the 1600M and 3200M state champion for the third year in a row. Molly is on pace to become the most decorated runner in state history with her dominating wins in cross country and track and field.

“Every gift truly does make a difference and we have so much to be thankful for. Gifts large and small have helped many of the dreams we have for ULS come to fruition. The Campus Green is generating new life on our campus. As the grass grows, we can envision students playing soccer, sketching, reading, and even skating during recess. The Lower School students are bursting with excitement over their new classroom spaces, engaging new teaching teams and inquiry-driven curriculum. The Middle School’s fifth- through eighthgraders are just plain giddy about having their own vibrant space, and the Upper School students are already planning for their new Spring Intercession Courses.

The retention of 91 percent of our student body shows how much our families believe in ULS. Our new education plan has already greatly enriched the academic and student life experience for every student. As we strengthen and grow our school, we must continue to invest in our children and preserve ULS for many generations to come. It is our school’s time. Gifts support the school’s leadership curriculum, focusing on the drug and alcohol awareness component of the program.

Katherine Davis Tornehl Memorial Fund Established in May of 2008 to recognize and celebrate the life of Kate Tornehl. A teacher for 35 years, Kate was instrumental in creating and leading the preprimary department, bringing the Reggio Emilia approach to ULS. Funds will be used for professional development, specifically to immerse faculty in the theory and practices of the Reggio Emilia approach by sending teachers to Reggio Emilia, Italy, for their immersion courses.

College Guidance Enhancement Fund Established in 1997, this fund helps ensure the best college placement for each ULS graduate. It augments and enhances our college placement activities and can provide for activities, software, and ULS Guidance Counselor visits to colleges throughout the country to become acquainted with the college and educate the college about the caliber of students at ULS.

Competitive scholarship awarded annually to a new, incoming Upper School student. Criteria for the award include an interest and competence in science, good citizenship, and is needs based.

The Second Mile Faculty Recognition Award, established in 2007, is presented each year to a ULS faculty member who exemplifies those traits most valued in our teachers by the student body. By Kate Seiberlich … Some of us were born and raised on traditions like the Barn Sale, Field Day, and the Big Toy. Some of us just came, and look at the others like we’re insane at the thought of oversized rummage sales, pulling each other into mud-pits, or ancient jungle-gyms. No matter how long you’ve gone here, something about ULS, whether it’s the absurdity of a single-hall high school or the craziness of Leadership Trips, drags you in. Some people fight it. They leave in middle school, only to come back three years later for high school.

Some of our classmates have left and come back, because they know ULS is the place to be for a sound education….

EXCERPTS OF GRADUATION SPEECH CLASS OF 2011

Even though we’re leaving, there’s always a piece of us left behind wherever we’ve been. When we left at the start of Senior Projects, there was a piece of our camaraderie left behind in the silence. When we cleaned out our lockers, there were memories left behind in the Senior Room itself. As we leave the school for the last time, there are pictures left behind of green gowns, green and white tassels, and laughing faces…. It’s the pieces we leave behind that tell you what people remember the most about you and what they miss about you. It’s these pieces we take with us and leave in new places.

My grandfather, Richard Burke, was quoted once as saying, “I want to be remembered as someone who was fair and made a difference.”

I believe we as a class have followed in his footsteps and made a difference. We didn’t just impact the people around us. We made a difference in the school and in the community. We did what we thought was right and we’ll keep on doing it. A lot of people might look at ULS and say, “They make you do that. What’s to say you won’t stop when you get to college?”

My answer is, “They don’t make us do anything. ULS encourages us to share what we have with others.

By the time you graduate, selfishness has sort of been trained out of you.”…

As life continues on, the door to our high school careers slowly swings shut. As we continue to move forward, the diplomas fall from our hands to be replaced with textbooks. Our caps and gowns fade into memory to become jeans and T-shirts with our college logos on them.

Our minds shed the feeling of being high school students and accept the opportunities and challenges of college life. The door may have closed, but as it closes, a window opens. And, as the window opens, there’s a flicker of a realization that life, ike the seasons, changes. We may only be able to remember what used to be, and think of it fondly.

On behalf of the Class of 2011, I would like to use a family (adage) and say, “Thanks , it’s been a great ride.”

Kate Meurs ’82 writes that after five wonderful years at Washington State University, she has relocated to the East Coast to be closer to her family.

Kate is now working at the North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine.

Formerly the principal at Starr Elementary in New Richmond, WI, Greg Gentle ’86, is the new principal at Cushing Elementary in Delafield.

Kristin and Eric Olson ’91, and big brother Matthew welcomed D a n i e l D e n n i s i n t o t h e i r family on Feb. 27.

Congratulations, also, to Holly and Jim Barkow ’94 on the birth of their first child, Jackson James Barkow on June 21. Jim, Holly and Jack reside in San Francisco.

Katie Kuehn ’95 found time in her busy life last spring to stop in for a visit with twin daughters, Kailin and Kallan, and their younger brother, Konrad William Hauk Kuehn Habben, born April 14, 2010. Katie is in her 11th year with Verizon, currently managing the Financial Exchange and Strategic Sales Vertical Team in Chicago. She writes, “In my abundant free time I rediscovered my art roots.

I started showing my children's photography, under heavy pressure from some friends, and to my surprise won honorable mention in New York Women's Professional Photography Magazine for a photo I took of Konnor and my husband, Tim! I also had portfolios in two additional international competitions. I hope this finds everyone at my ULS family well…!”

More congratulations go out to Lauren von Bereghy ’97 and John Mrozowski on their recent engagement. John, a native of Long Island, NY, and Lauren will be married July 21, 2012, at Lauren’s family home in Chenequa.

Best wishes to David Manegold ’98 and Julie Skinner of Oklahoma on their marriage Sept. 3 in Hanover, NH. Julie is a doctoral candidate in astronomy and David works in mechanical engineering and software design.The wedding was held on campus at the Dartmouth Outing Club House, with the reception at the Dartmouth Skiway.

David’s brother, Tyler ’03, served as best man. Groomsmen included Tom Dunlop ’99, John Fritzke ’99, and Chris Mortonson. Sally Barkow ’98, Kari Koeper ’98, and Michael Koeper ’00 attended.

Tom Dunlop ’99 began his pursuit of a law degree at Denver University’s Sturm College of Law this past August.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Justin Booth ’03 graduated from last spring from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Justin, and his wife Julie, are currently stationed in Utah.

Heath Nunnemacher ’03 writes that he “started a new career with Charter Automotive as a market analyst in September 2010.

The company is a leading tier 1 supplier of valve train components to the automotive industry, currently supplying 11 of the world’s top 14 vehicle manufacturers from its facilities in Milwaukee, England, and China …. The company’s business in China continues to rapidly expand along with growing vehicle demand, and it is in the interest of overseeing that growth I am announcing my move on April 1 to Wuhu, Anhui Province, China to assume a newly developed role as Charter Automotive’s China business manager. In that lead role I will be assuming full profit/loss responsibility for all business conducted in China, including management of the Wuhu facility operations and personnel.”

Kyle Duke ’05 is one of four students from IIT Institute of Design’s graduate program chosen to design an out-patient unit for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Their goal is to create a hotel environment for bone marrow transplant patients and their care givers to use during the twoto four-week recovery time.These 24 rooms need to be separate from the main hospital in order to distinguish them as out-patient rooms vs. in-patient rooms for health insurance reasons. A doctor entering the area would change the patient’s status to in-patient, so the design team must also create a communication system for use between the medical staff and the patient.

Video conferencing is one possibility that is being considered.

Kyle and the other students make their final presentation to the hospital in December.

Congratulations to Pete Neils ’05, on his graduation last December from the University of Denver with a degree in business and marketing.

Jalissa Booth ’07 received the Chancellor’s Award for the 2011 spring semester at UW-Stout.

Good job!

Julie Ditkof ’07 graduated from Ohio State University last December with a B.S. in Geological Sciences, Honors in the Arts and Sciences, and Research Distinction. Last January, Julie began an Internship in Geological Research with the University of Texas in Austin.

Best wishes to both Meredith Quail ’07 and Lauren Blackman ’08 who are also recent graduates from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio!

Katie Karnes ’10 was at ULS last spring, observing Mrs. Wold’s third grade class as part of her Education 100 class at Carroll University.

Mike Ameel ’11 has taken his ULS leadership skills along to UW-Milwaukee where he has been elected a senator for the Student Housing Administration Council. Mike is also a Big Brother for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Milwaukee.

GOOD-BYE This past year, two of our ULS beloved teachers and our favorite teacher’s aide retired from ULS. All three truly have an amazing passion for teaching and nurturing students’ love of learning. With great fondness, the following quote says it all:

“Good teaching is as much about passion as it is about reason. It’s about not only motivating students to learn, but teaching them how to learn, and doing so in a manner that is relevant, meaningful, and memorable.

Fourth Grade Teacher 26 years of service to ULS “I wish that I could have gone to school here … taking advantage of and experiencing the woods, the great teachers, the beautiful buildings and all of the wonderful friendships.”

Gary Gmur (ULS retired math teacher of 40 years, Lower School head and interim head) fondly remembers hiring Mary as ULS’s first certified reading specialist. As a fourth grade teacher she created many traditions at ULS that are now more than 20 years old. One of Mary strongest skills is her ability to create the most amazing integrated learning units.

One of the favorites of the entire Lower School, not only for the student but the customers, is the “Fourth Grade Business Unit.” The study of Wisconsin history was also one of Mary’s hallmarks. So much so it continued again this fall with the fourth-graders reading “Paddle to the Sea” and learning about the use of rivers before trains. The most beloved activity is the culmination of the project with a visit to Mary’s family farm.

For more than 20 years students have ended their school year creating many incredible memories. Her passion for education will continue for many years to come as the next generation continues to experience Wisconsin history at Koepke Farms and meet one of our ULS legends – Mary – during their visits.

Pam Hansen

Second Grade Teacher 26 years of service to ULS “My favorite memories of ULS were graduation, watching students learn, and watching my own children graduate from ULS.” Pam was hired at ULS the second year the Lower School was opened, starting as a secretary to the head of the Lower School, Richard Butt. Soon after, Pam became a second grade teacher where she blossomed and stayed for the next 24 years.

Pam was instrumental in the creation of the Gifted and Talented programs as both an advocate and expert.

One of Pam’s strongest assets as a teacher came from being a mother of three boys. Gary Gmur reflects: “Pam got the boy thing and embraced it with a strong and loving hand, always engaging their energy in amazing integrated projects.” One of the most unique memories was the second grade pig unit that Pam created during which the students read every book they could find about pigs. The unit culminated with a field trip to a pig farm; the essence of the farm lingered for days throughout the hallways. Fond memories and learning experiences from Pam will remain at ULS for year s and year s to come.

Barb Cahill

Teacher’s Aide 20 years of service to ULS “My favorite memories of ULS are every Halloween parade, backpacking leadership excursions in the UP, and watching the super relay at every spring Field Day.” Barb Cahill was hired as an aide to the ULS 5-year-old kindergarten program more than 20 years ago and was a key player throughout the growth and changes of the preprimary program. Always smiling, Barb stepped in many times as a substitute teacher in the Lower School, and continues to lend a hand when duty calls.

Gary Gmur, then head of the Lower School, recalls the amazing outfits Barb and Jean Dorn would dress up in as they would re-enact their children’s stories like “Missy Wishy Washy.”

Barb also lives for Halloween, with a new costume every year.

This year she came to substitute teach and donned on a goofy doctor costume. Barb’s license plate says it all “Run for Fun” — maybe it should say “Run for ULS.” Whether coaching soccer, tennis, track, or just chasing students, we will always love her contagious energy, smile, and spirit she shares with everyone she meets.
