Letters from the Head of School and the President of the Board On September 1st University Lake School opened its doors to new programs, new ideas, and a new organizational structure. With the closing of the Stackner, students in grades six and seven were assigned to the Lower School while our 8th graders joined the Upper School. In each of our Lower School classrooms students were greeted not only by their new teachers but also the new SmartBoard technology. The 6th and 7th graders congregated around their new lockers before heading over to the Cyber Café located in the cafeteria. Mrs. Karen Malhiot introduced students to the new Lower School science lab for grades four through seven while parents and students alike welcomed the new team of Lower School Head Mrs. Linnea Style and Guidance Counselor Nancy Bicha-Dale. Our 8th graders discovered both their own locker bay as well as a new outdoor classroom. All students were amazed by the transformation of the Upper School library into a new Multi-Media Center. Yet despite all these wonderful changes, the true spirit of University Lake School remains the same. Teachers, students and families reconnected with the enthusiasm and new hope that the start of the school year brings. Thank you for your support, past, present, and future, of the ULS mission.

Greetings On behalf on the Board of Trustees, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our amazing faculty and our entire dynamic school community for their support and dedication in moving our school confidently through transition towards an exciting future. Together we have already come far, with much on the agenda in the next year. As you know, we are seeking new leadership, and will be updating you as the Head search progresses. Financially, we have consolidated our operations and are working towards a balanced budget and retiring all debt. With input from the community, we will be developing a concise strategic plan to further academic excellence, enable growth, and consider a number of new initiatives. Education - vibrant and innovative, is the hallmark on which ULS was founded, and the priority still as we move forward. Great to see so many alums, their parents, current families and our students all working or shopping together over Barn Sale weekend. A great event and 52 year old tradition that bring us together. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brad Ashley and his wife Janet for their work and dedication to ULS over the last seven years, and wish them every success in their new adventure. hat more can be said about our Gary G. Gmur, our legend who chose early retirement this year? Well, during a unit on Breakfast with Morrie, ninth graders had to discuss their favorite teacher of all time. Here's a snippet of what some said: “Out of all the teacher's I've had, I understood Mr. Gmur's teaching method the most. He'd always use different approaches depending on who was in class. He'd go from the book, to the lab, and even class discussions. If you didn't understand the subject as well as other people, or needed extra help, he would always be there after school to help you. Another thing

I liked came from his sense of humor and how he could always make a lesson funny. He would often make jokes about the subject at hand and even find cool pictures and videos off the internet.

Perhaps the best thing about Mr. Gmur could have been that he made every class engaging. Whether the topic was atoms to the stars, he would find the way that you learned best and use that during classes. He would always do different things that would keep you interested.”

r another: “In 7th and 8th grade Mr. Gmur broke my “learn and forget” system and has remained my favorite teacher ever since. If you want an example for understanding, go talk to Mr. Gmur.Whenever I needed help Mr. Gmur was there. Since he helped me so much, learning tended to be a blast around Mr Gmur. He used many different resources, for example a video on periodic tables or a light bulb that signifies the sun. If you didn't understand what he was teaching, he could give you about four different examples or explanations. The impressive temperament that he added to the learning atmosphere created a perfect setting for his classes. The only time I remember Mr. Gmur being angry was when people were swinging on the giant cube we built during class.” Or yet a third: “One quality that made Mr. Gmur a great teacher was how much knowledge he had in so many subjects. His ability to teach was astounding and kept everyone interested. The homework assignments were varied to make sure we wouldn't get bored. I recall him being one of the kindest teachers that I have ever had. I remember that he would check our homework and would give us feedback or suggestions. If we had something wrong, he would give the assignment back to us and we would have a chance to make corrections and receive full credit.”

Thanks to Gary for hiring me 19 years ago, I got a fun summer job, a husband and 3 three kids out of the deal. Those are some great employment benefits!

I personally remember how he drove out to my home to deliver flowers to me when I had been in the hospital. (I had lost a baby). I guess to me this is an example of yet another side of Gary the soft and caring side. His dry sense of humor was always the best! I marveled at how he was able to deal with a building full of women. I was blessed to be hired by him. I worked along side him as his secretary. He watched both of my children grow. He was their principal but also my daughter's middle school teacher. I am honored to be teaching his granddaughter this year. He has left such a legacy. I think when you look up ULS you will find Gary Gmur's name. I remember Gary on the sledding hill, in his blue/green heavy jacket. He was always there, not interfering or saying much, but his presence was enough. The kids always knew he'd be there for him. Gary is a servant leader. I've never worked for such a man who would sweep, clean up nasty messes, and just do whatever needed to be done with very few words. It made me want to work harder! Gary and I used to take kids cross country skiing after school back in the old days. What were we thinking? Some had never been on skis, we had to practically carry them and then catch up with the kids who could ski. Good thing Gary knew the woods, or I would have been lost a lot. I loved those days. He was Gary G, the master mathlete. “G” for gentleman, and “G” for giant, (well, symbolically, anyway). Remember his giant bag of ties? He had "math geek" ties and just plain ugly ties! I really missed Gary as Head when he went back to teaching. But he was definitely happier back in the classroom, I know. His quiet manner, his humor, his math mind, made him a great boss. I still miss him a lot. Mr. Gmur was all class. He helped me out a ton in the first year I was teaching the Pre-Algebra class. Always there with a smile and was quick to ask you how you were doing.

Like a Swiss watch, Gary never needs repair-or even winding up-he is quietly present in every minute and strikes the hour precisely and continuously. He ticks off numbers and with every second impacts students’ and colleagues’ lives with his ironic humor and respectful manners. The Grandpa of the 3rd generation of Gmurs at ULS,

Gary has shared his time, his dedication, and his family with the ULS community for 43 years.

He's ageless! If you compare his yearbook photo in 1966 with the one this year, you'll note few differences. Students, take note! The fountain of youth is math!

His 3 children, Peter, Ann, and Jean, people our yearbooks and memories, and Peter peoples our classrooms with his children.

The high school has a Gary Gmur Scholar award that reflects his nature. It's given to a student who “demonstrates a positive attitude, participates in class discussions, perseveres in problem solving, has insights into math relationships, and who has helped others.”

Who can forget the duo of Gmur and (math department chair) Jim Raufus? and their 1-minute math dept. meetings in the boys'

I will always remember him as a big influence on my time at ULS.

Kindness, humility, academic excellence, humor, collegiality, student-centeredness, intelligence, the glue holding ULS together: that's what we can say about our Gary Gmur. Gary is a gentle-man. His kind demeanor and a warm disposition welcomes students and faculty. Because of his accessibility and openness, he has been a ready mentor for countless students and faculty over the years. I miss the steady, calming effect of talking with Gary. When I walk away from a conversation with him, his perspective and wisdom remind me what a great place ULS is! Gary Gmur arrived at ULS, a single, rookie teacher, fresh out of the University of Wisconsin’s mathematics program. While at ULS he married, had three children who graduated from the school, and now has grandchildren at the school. The new teacher who made a commitment to teach at ULS in 1968, has put the best years of his life into the school. Gary’s unwavering loyalty, dedication to his students, love of mathematics, and sense of humor set a standard for ULS teachers that all should emulate. Retirement is deserved, but it is a bittersweet time for the school community, as his absence makes us aware of feelings of loss. Gary was and is a true and loyal friend. He was Lower School Head in the formative years of the Lower School and he made teachers, students, and parents feel that this was the best place to be. His leadership in those years helped grow the school into a caring place for children. Of course one cannot think of Gary without thinking about not only his commitment to ULS, but also his sense of humor. Where would we be today without his humor to see us through difficult days? I think of him driving kids in the school van, teaching driver’s ed in the summer months, skiing with the Lower School kids in the ULS woods after school, frying numerous brats and hamburgers at the Back to School nights or Barn Sale days, helping out in any way asked.

What an excellent model for students and adults alike.

Director of Technology “The implementation of technology at University Lake School has been keenly focused around the needs of our students, faculty, and curriculum from providing support services for our 1:1 notebook computing program, to coordinating the installation of our 12 new SmartBoard enabled classrooms in the Manegold Lower School. In addition to our new website and the recent acquisition of our new Mac Lab to support the Art and Music programs, we've focused on becoming a more open, more collaboratively oriented, 21st century learning environment. This flexibility helps us to continue to serve the needs of each and every student in a very individualized manner.”

“Our growing challenges have become opportunities to broaden our horizons.”

Everyone loves new and exciting challenges and knows that change is inevitable. This year's changes have been enthusiastically embraced by the parents, students, and faculty of University Lake School.We've expanded the science program, added a second section of fifth grade, welcomed the sixth and seventh grade students to the building and created a Cyber Cafe just for them, as well as installed Smart Boards in each classroom in the building! Expanding the science program is an exciting way to ensure curriculum continuity throughout the intermediate and middle grades and provide an incredible hands-on science foundation. Karen Malhiot and her students love the newly remodeled science lab and the new supplies that were purchased through generous donations from our ULS parent community. Her students have already been testing water samples, and put their knowledge to work on a field trip to the Oconomowoc River. The fifth graders have warmly welcomed new students and are developing lasting friendships. Mrs. Eckert and Mr. Hardgrove are thrilled with their inquisitive students and have noticed a zest for learning and sense of community. After learning about the early explorers, the fifth graders took their lesson to heart and spent their recess time gathering sticks, building forts, and simulating what it was like to settle in this country. It is heartwarming to see the students take what they have learned in the classroom and use their imagination to reenact the lesson in a different environment. The second grade classes moved to the primary wing this year, making that space even more vibrant and welcoming for our youngest Lakers. Perhaps you've heard about the Cyber Cafe located in the Lower School cafeteria/multipurpose room.This new addition has been a special gathering place for the 6th and 7th graders to study, complete homework, or just “hang out” briefly. Thanks to a student body vision and the unconditional parental support, this became a reality. The Smart Boards not only look cool in every Lower School classroom but are also awesome teaching and learning tools. The teachers have had several meetings and participated in an extensive Smart Board training in-service. The Smart Boards are an invaluable resource and have made the students even more eager to participate! Best of all, I have the privilege of witnessing learning at its finest, and delight in the energy and enthusiasm that the students exude on a daily basis in the Lower School! Our growing challenges have become opportunities to broaden our horizons. I have seen a lasting impact on the lives of those we teach, and it completely reaffirms why my job is one of the most rewarding!

Upper School

In education, like other investments, the payoff is often not immediately realized, but can require patience, diligence and nurturing. Having the perspective of the long haul is not easy when dealing with monetary capital or a student's potential.

One of the most rewarding aspects of working with students at ULS is seeing the progress of each child over an extended period of time. Developing traits in students that transcend academic department or discipline seldom happens quickly. While the incremental progress can be frustrating, especially relative to the usual pace of 21st century life, it is remarkable to see the student as a finished high school product.

Graduation is exhilarating every spring, but for me it pales in comparison to the long term reward of our students being successful in the next stages of college and adulthood. The academic preparation is evident in the remarkable scholarship and financial awards the 2009 graduates took to college. The eight “lifelong Lakers” in last year's senior class were awarded an average of $152,693 in scholarships. The entire class received scholarships totaling $1,609,940. Whether getting an enthusiastic update from an alum's parent or receiving an email from a graduate who is enjoying a successful first semester, the impact of the ULS and Upper School community is profound. My inbox this fall has notes from members of the Class of 2009 who have found that they have significant advantages over their peers upon arriving at college. First, they are attending a college that fits them. The philosophy, school size, location and level of support match their strengths in order to be successful. Secondly, they have the ability to work independently. They can carry a full schedule and be involved in campus life and activities beyond their class load, allowing for a more connected and successful experience. Our graduates know how to study, asking critical and clarifying questions. Further, where many high students have been in the back of the classroom or cut from the team, ULS students have been in the mix and are ready to lead in college, seeking and maximizing opportunities.

Finally, and as important as the academic preparation, it makes me proud to hear that the students believe in themselves. “It was not until my departure from ULS and the start of an education class... that I was really able to take a step back and look at my high school experience from a different perspective. And as much as I never would have admitted it in years past, the experience was never about the grades I received. ULS defined me as a person, both inside and out.” Our Business Manager, Tim Horner, often includes a note about the value of investment in your child's education. Without question, it does take some patience for the dividends to arrive. However, from the Class of 1961 to the Class of 2009, our alumni share a common heritage; the support and commitment of their families and school to maximize their opportunities and rewards.

Upper School Library Transformed into a New-Multi Media Center

SmartBoards Every classroom in the Lower School grades 1-7 have a SmartBoard thanks to a very generous anonymous donor. Their gift is truly making a difference in our students learning and in the way our teachers teach. When talking to the teachers, I think Liz McSorley, 2nd Grade summed it up best “We love it!!!!!! This tremendous tool is changing the way I teach in a major way!” Mary Koepke, 4th grade reflected “Really fun and the students have finally really learned elapsed time! I've found a clock that the kids can use, push ahead or back by 1 min, 5 min, 15 min or 1 hour.They set the clock, then move back or forward depending upon the problem. This is the first time I've been able to teach elapsed time and think that the kids actually are getting it!”

Thanks to the very generous gifts and labor of a group of ULS families the Upper School Library was transformed before the start of the new school year. Teachers and students alike are using this new wonderful space for giving presentations, small group work, athletic team meetings and gathering, faculty work and inservice.

8th Grade Outdoor Classroom & Gathering Space

ULS – New Website

This wonderful new outdoor space was created this summer as part of a donation of labor and funds by the Class of 2009 to welcome our 8th graders back to the Upper School. This new outdoor classroom and gathering space was enhanced and completed thanks to the very generous donations of a few ULS families. The kids have already had their 8th grade campout, science classes, leadership workshops, and many, many social gathering.

Last November the school launched its new and improved website. The new design is intended to showcase all that is unique about the University Lake School experience. Initially intended as a marketing tool for prospective families, the site has grown to become an important vehicle for communicating with current parents. As ULS continues efforts to be environmentally conscious, we have increasingly used the website as a resource for families to access back to school forms, current event details, and highlights of campus happenings.Visitors to the site can apply for admission and donate to the school as well. Work is currently underway to include detailed curricular examples, galleries of student work and an alumni community forum.The website will continue to evolve into a valuable resource for our entire extended ULS community. Whether you’re on campus every day or thousands of miles away, you can stay connected by logging on to www.universitylake.org. By sending us your e-mail we can keep you connected even more.

Other Campus Improvements Our Upper School has a new roof thanks to the very generous donations from our entire Board of Trustees. The 8th grade has a new classroom and locker bay located in the Upper School. Our 6th & 7th graders are enjoying their new spaces and lockers as well.

University Lake School was founded in 1956 to become a premier college preparatory school in the Lake Country of Waukesha County. Throughout its history, the support and dedication of many individuals, businesses and foundations have enabled ULS to become that premier college preparatory school. The Katherine Davis Tornehl Memorial Fund was established in May of 2008 to recognize and celebrate the life of Kate – who touched the lives of so many children and individuals. A teacher for 35 years, Kate’s passion for teaching and learning was contagious. She was instrumental in creating and leading the pre-primary department, bringing the Reggio Emilia approach to University Lake School. The Katherine Davis Tornehl Memorial Fund will to be used for professional development. Specifically, to immerse our faculty in the theory and practices of the Reggio Emilia Approach for their immersion courses. Congratulations go out to Jamie Aldrich (3rd grade), Pamela Probst (1st grade) and Lindsay Sandstrom (JK) for becoming the first recipients of the fund. Jamie, Pam and Lindsay headed off Oct. 25- 30th to Reggio Emilia, Italy to attend an international course and study week “The experience of the Preschool and research contexts and continuity with Primary School.” This is a great honor for University Lake School to have three of our faculty be accepted to participate in this international course with such limited enrollment.

MOLLY SEIDEL THREE-PEAT STATE CHAMPION ULS Sophomore & daughter of & Fritz Seidel ’80

Molly completed an undefeated 2009 cross country season by winning her fourth State individual championship, as she ran away with the crown besting all three divisions in Wisconsin Rapids on October 31. She also broke her own 2008 record-setting performance for Division 3.

Year in Review

HER AVERAGE MARGIN OF VICTORY FOR THE SEVEN INVITES LEADING TO STATE WAS 1:02. Molly's 14:12 in the mud, rain and cold on 10/3 at the Lake Country Lutheran Invite was easily the fastest 4-K clocking in the state this year and one of the top times in the country. At the Arrowhead Invitational on 9/10 Molly outpaced the defending 2008 D-1 State Champ from the host school by 18 seconds and at the Angel Invitational on 9/19 she ran a blistering 14:22 the third fastest ever time on the nationally ranked course at UW-Parkside. At the meet she bested the 2008 D-2 State Champ from Catholic Memorial by 17 seconds. She was the 2008 D-3 State Champion in Cross Country and during the 2009 spring track season she swept the State Mile and 2 Mile Championships!!! The 2008 Lady Laker field hockey squad tallied one of its best records. An overtime loss in the State semifinals closed out their 17-5-1 season. First Team All-Conference honors went to senior forward Lexi Brumder and junior defensive stalwart Caiti Brownel. Seniors Tara Finch and Ali Warner along with junior Hillary Rolfs lent balance to the team and were selected to the Second Team squad, while Honorable Mention, Kate Seiberlich was a sophomore sensation in goal. In cross country, Fab freshman Molly Seidel ran into the record books by winning the Division 3 State title. Senior, Brighid Dolan was also a multi-meet medalist who along with Molly and the three other underclassmen brought home two second place and a third place team trophy performances for the women harriers. The men's thin clads were led by senior Preston Haas and sophomore Quinn Dolan. The men's soccer squad which co-oped with Lake Country Lutheran was led by two First Team All-Conference seniors, goalie, Will Villavicencio and Mark Ditkof as his sweeper. The season was highlighted by several wins over D-1 schools and a 1-0 victory in Regional play against Lake Mills. The booters were eli-

manted by eventual State champion Columbus. The nascent women’s netters registered the school's first volleyball victory by defeating Milwaukee Tech. Four of the team's losses were decided in the fifth set. The squad was anchored by three junior All-Conference selections, spiker Sadie Millan, setter Tina Dimicelli, and outside hitter Katie Zastrow. The Lady Laker hoopsters posted the best won-loss record (156) in school history for women's basketball. They led southeast Wisconsin in defensive for most of the season, allowing their opponents only 31.2 points per game. Senior forward and four year All-Conference selection, Brighid Dolan became ULS's alltime leading scorer, lighting the scoreboard 932 times for the Green and White. Junior center Sadie Millen made Second Team All-Conference and senior forward Julie Timm received Honorable Mention status. The men of the hardcourts finished regular season play at .500 and tied for second place in the Indian Trails Conference. Three point ace, senior Drew Taylor finished his career as a member of the elite 900 point club along with achieving First Team AllConference recognition. The Chairman of the Boards Will Villavicencio also closed out a stellar four-year stint by garnering Second Team All-Conference status, while the Lakers floor general, sophomore Sean O'Neill brought home an Honorable Mention award. The women's ski team cut a racer's edge to the conference championship trophy and then carved their way around the gates to a fifth in State. Leading the charge down the slope for the schussers were All-Conference selections, junior Hillary Rolfs and sophomore Molly Seidel who were typically separated in splitseconds from junior Tonie Michaels and sophomore Piper Rosenheimer. The men's downhillers were buoyed by the performances of senior Niall Jensen, junior Yianni Glavas, and sophomore Casey Litow. The blades on ice co-oped with Oconomowoc, Pewaukee and St. John's Northwestern Military Academy to form the Laker's ice hockey team. Although finishing under .500, the young squad began to gel by season's end. ULS juniors Jack Tyson at wing and Braiden Sorgenfrei,The Dr. of Defense, lent strong skating skills to the squad.

The 2009 coed tennis team completed its seventh straight winning season with many of the victories against D -1 competition. After being crowned the 2008 WIAA Regional champions, the 2009 team was runner-up. Likewise, the team won the East Troy Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years. Individual highlights included senior Will Villavicencio, junior Yianni Glavas and sophomore Quinn Dolan advancing to the state tournament, and the number one doubles team of seniors Mark Ditkof and Preston Haas tallying a perfect 14-0

The coed golf squad moved their home course to the Rolling Hills Golf Course on Lac La Belle for 2009. Captained by seniors Drew Taylor and Brett Beede and aided by the skilled sophomore Sean O'Neill, the linksmen bested schools such as Brookfield Academy and Wayland Academy in dual match play. Senior Meghan McFadden was low scorer for the women and lent depth to the squad. Individually, Drew Taylor capped off a terrific 4year career with a third consecutive trip to the Sectional round. Drew was the medalist (lowest score) at the Regional meet in Madison rebounding from a front nine 40, including 3 birdies on the back nine to shoot 76. Women's soccer once again co-oped with Lake Country Lutheran. ULS supplied offensive power with the swift feet of seniors Lexi Brumder and Ali Warner. Sophomore Kaylen Podjaski was a force at the defensive end of the pitch.

JUNE 6TH, 2009 GRADUATION Benediction It has been 18 years in the making, now it is time to go our separate ways. Though we leave for grander things, we shall never forget the journey that brought us to this point. We want to recognize our dedicated teachers for the encouragement they have given us throughout the years. Not only are they amazing educators, but incredible mentors. We want to thank our families and friends for the never-ending love and support. Without all of your guidance none of us would be here. As we embark on a new adventure, may we find direction in times of need, courage in times of hardships, faith in times of doubt, hope in times of despair, and joy in times of sadness. Let us go forth and begin a new chapter, yet as we branch out, let us never forget our roots. We part with many memories that we will forever hold in our hearts. As we diverge on the uncertain and untraveled roads of our futures we understand that our years here at ULS WILL MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. We anticipate our paths crossing in the near future, realizing that these are not goodbyes just longer “see ya laters.” To all those who have impacted our lives, we truly thank you. Althea Duersten ’68 took some time off recently from her job at JP Morgan and made a trip to Wisconsin with her sons David (13) and Ben (9). Visiting her home state brought back “lots of great memories.” They also stopped to see Lola Kappus Loepfe ’68 and her family while they were here.

Last year was quite a year for Paul Henning ’68. His work in the stock photo industry took him to L.A., Arizona, New York, and Malta! On September 2, 2008 his dad turned 90 – on October 1 he moved into Paul’s duplex in Milwaukee. His dad lives downstairs and Paul and his son, Graham (13), live upstairs. “It’s sort of a My Three Sons thing,” writes Paul. Graham has turned out to be quite an accomplished musician – piano and guitar – and was accepted into the Milwaukee High School of the Arts this fall.

Sam Dykema’71 is finishing his final year in the Foreign Service in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. He then plans to retire to the Vermont woods after 20 years with the Federal Government. He also hopes to spend more time in the Lake Country area and see more ULSers than he has in the past two decades. His wife, Zsuzsanna, and daughters Aranka (9) and Zsofia (5) will settle in Debrecen, Hungary to attend grade school in their mother country.

Cape Cod is still home for Stuart Eyman ’71, where he works at Highland Links, the oldest course in Massachusetts (1892). Trudy Erwin ’72 writes that she is still working as a surgical RN in Riverview, FL. Her 21 year old son, Ryan is an EMT. John Koepke ’91, a member of the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin, has been appointed by Governor Jim Doyle to serve on the Wisconsin State Board of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection. Governor Doyle said John’s “background as a successful dairy farmer and active member of Wisconsin’s agricultural community will be incredibly valuable to the board.” John operates Koepke Farms Inc. in partnership with his father and uncles. They have 330 Holstein cows and over 900 acres dedicated to corn, soybeans, and hay. Windwood Country Club in Watertown was the site of the November 14, 2009 wedding of Sandy Schoenherr ’92 and Dan Utech. Congratulations! Belated congratulations to Sydney Meyer Shimko ’94 and her husband, Jason, on the birth of their son Tarek on August 1, 2008. He was welcomed into the family by big sister Maia. The latest adventure for Sally Barkow ’98 was the October Rolex Middle Sea Race, a 606 nautical-mile adventure around Sicily that began and ended at Malta. Sally was one of two drivers of the Nikata, a yacht from the United

Kingdom that won in its class. In November, she will be off to the Korea Match Race, and early next year Sally will start working toward qualifying for the 2012 Olympics!

Heidi Genevieve Klink was welcomed into the world on June 27. Heidi, the daughter of Lindsey and Jeff Klink ’98, has settled in her role as a South Florida “beach ball baby.” (Grandma Tami’s quote.) Heather Mertz ’98 recently stopped in for a visit and tour of the ULS campus. She has moved from Madison to Dallas, where she is a sales executive with Humana. She also is a member of a flat track roller derby team there. Nice to see you, Heather! Last February Ali Farnham ’01 took a job as an 8th grade math teacher, filling in for a teacher who was out for the semester. She discovered she loved it and is now pursuing it as her career! Ali was emergency certified last year and has returned to school to get her full certification. She teaches during the day and attends class a few nights a week. Ali enjoys living in Cave Creek/Scottsdale, AZ but writes that she “misses fall and the beautiful drive up to ULS.” She will be finished with school in May and is planning on taking a trip to Thailand next summer to teach for a month or so. News from Marc Cabanatuan ’02 last spring – “I'm currently working as a record producer, DJ, and mastering engineer. Over the past year I've had several record releases that have gotten airplay all over the globe from New Zealand to the UK. I've had the wonderful opportunity to travel as well and DJ in clubs across the US and in the UK. If all of this wasn’t enough, I also co-run an independent record label based out of Milwaukee called Soul Fuel Recordings. All of these things have also brought me a lot of connections that I would have never dreamed of. Past and future projects include working with: Steve "Silk" Hurley (a dance music pioneer and big wig), CeCe Penniston, Mark Farina, and more.”

Congratulations to A.D. Bohl ’04 who graduated last spring from the University of South Florida with a double major in Criminology and Spanish Language & Literature. A.D. is working at a local college where she is teaching a class on medical Spanish, which is geared toward a conversation between a doctor and patient. She writes, “I am so grateful that ULS started teaching the language so early and that Señora Mocchi instilled such a passion in me that it ended up as a career path….” Jeremy Klingensmith ’05 has graduated top of his class from Northwest Nazarene University in Idaho with a double major Philosophy and Spanish. Presently, he is working at the Idaho State Capital within the justice system. Congratulations, Jeremy!

Congratulations to Kelsey Smith ’05 who graduated last May from the Arizona State University with a B.A. in Human Communication with an emphasis in Interpersonal Communication.

Libby Kocher ’05 graduated summa cum laude last June from Lawrence University with a degree in Government and was chosen during the fall of her junior year to be a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Congratulations, Libby! Libby spent the summer of ’08 in Washington D.C. working as a congressional intern. She is planning on working in a government related field for a year a two before beginning law school. Double congratulations to Emily Metz ’05. Emily graduated last spring from George Washington University with a B.A. in International Affairs and Journalism & Mass Communication. She is currently attending Seton Hall University Law School. Emily will be getting married at the Oconomowoc Lake Club on August 14, 2010 to Joshua Meredith from New York City. Joshua graduated from George Washington with a B.A. in History and will graduate from Syracuse University College of Law next May. Libby Kocher ’05 will be a bridesmaid.

Best wishes to Tiffany Bava ’07 and Nathaniel Bernard on their August 1 marriage. Tiffany and Nat have moved to Canada, near Nat’s family, and are working in graphics, videography and web streaming. Dominique Sorgenfrei ’07 has graduated from the Army ROTC Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as “Operation Warrior Forge,” at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. Dominique is a junior at Illinois Wesleyan University.
