A joint letter from the President of the Board and the Head of School The year 2010 marks a time of renewal at University Lake School. The school’s community has recently engaged in an enormous collaborative project in an effort to peer inwardly upon itself, evaluating programs and structures with a critical eye while making room for stronger expectations through the strategic visioning process. New leadership has joined the community, and exciting new ideas are already taking shape.

Despite all this change, however, the time-tested traditions and truths that lie at the heart of the ULS experience remain strong. The green and white competition, Barn Sale, school concerts, musicals, athletics, and school leadership trips all continue delivering the same kind of personal, unique value that has existed as part of a ULS education for the past 54 years.

Indeed, our school’s commitment to providing an exceptional education to Lake Country sons and daughters has not waned. Our teachers, administrative staff, Board of Directors and community of parents remain deeply committed to the school, for they steadfastly believe in its mission of serving as a college preparatory school of high expectations.

As in any year, it is critical, however, for our community to pull together to ensure that the school’s budget is fully funded beyond what is received in tuition income through the support of its donors. Because the cost of a ULS education far exceeds tuition, we rely on Annual Giving pledges and fundraising events like the Barn Sale and Spring Auction to ensure the continuation of small classes, state-of-the-art instructional technologies, no-cut athletics programs, incredible visual and performing arts classes, and dozens of related offerings that combine to make ULS such a uniquely engaging and compelling educational community.

PassionateLearningatULS As soon as you drive up the wooded driveway to the hilltop campus at University Lake School, you are reminded that this is a special place. On any given day, you may find senior kindergarten students on their weekly hike through the groomed trails that are laced throughout the 180-acre campus. You may also find Upper School environmental science students working on their ongoing study of the great blue heron rookery that has formed in a heavily wooded area behind the lower school building. And you will likely see at least one group of students outdoors with their physical education teacher just like the students from decades past.

There is no doubt that the school continues to take full advantage of this “outdoor classroom” in administering its educational philosophy to over 300 students between 3 and 18 years old. This emphasis on experiential learning, and the idea that a hands-on approach instills passion in students, is not limited to the outdoors.

Educators throughout the grades present curricular materials and skill-building opportunities using an interdisciplinary approach. One perennial favorite is the fourth grade business study, which still continues today. After reading several actual business plans from local and national companies, students are asked to create their own manufacturing company and manufacture a product to sell at a campus-wide sale. Not only do students learn the obvious math skills connected with such a task (budgeting, calculating net profits, pricing, graphing results), but they hone their writing skills (in their letter to shareholders and their product advertising) and flex their creative muscle (concepting and producing products from hair clips and refrigerator magnets to silly putty and snow globes).

Students at ULS are especially adept at making these connections because they have been learning that way since they entered the preprimary program at 3 years old. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to education, the 3, 4 and 5 year old classrooms, and the campus beyond, offer a rich environment that inspires discovery, creativity and a joy of learning. Unlike more traditional preschool programs, the University Lake School teachers don’t work from a prescribed catalog of units. Instead, they co-construct the learning with the students in their class each year by observing their play and tapping into the interests of the children. According to 4-year old teacher Cathy Wilkowski, “We believe children learn best through discovery and directed play. Children are capable, curious, and creative. They are natural researchers as they question what they see, hypothesize solutions, predict outcomes, experiment, and reflect on their discoveries. Whether they are out at the great blue heron rookery studying the effects of the nesting on our forest, trying to hypothesize if the mom is hunting for fish or dad is sitting on the eggs in the nest, to simply sketching these majestic creatures in flight – learning truly comes alive in our students’ minds and hearts. Our program is filled with opportunities for students to explore and nurture their sense of wonder and curiosity. Tell me and I’ll forget.

Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me and I’ll understand.”

The idea of putting learning into practice – known as transference – is executed in very practical ways once students reach the Upper School. Students learned how to shoot sight lines and gather data in the field, which they took back to the classroom and, after applying their trigonometry skills, plotted the trees that form the perimeter of the blue heron rookery on a map of the ULS campus. The

students and teachers plan to use this information as part of a larger study of the impact of the rookery on the overall health of the forest.

The culmination of years of hands-on learning experience comes in the form of the Senior Project, a month-long capstone experience constructed by individual students. This experience, still unique among other area private schools, has been part of the ULS curriculum for years. During the fall of their senior year, students submit a proposal for their Senior Project and do research on the topic. The projects range from political internships to experiences in the medical and science fields to music exploration and composition. The students find their own professional mentors who help them construct a 3-week, full-time schedule that will immerse them in their chosen topic. Students articulate their learning experiences in a 10-minute presentation to an audience of their teachers, peers and parents.

This philosophy of education is a new brand of college-prep, although it originated with the founding of the school over 50 years ago. Beyond mastering material and acquiring skills, University Lake School students graduate with the “soft skills” that others often lack. Colleges and universities – and down the road employers – increasingly identify interpersonal communication, creativity and flexibility as key attributes for success. College counselor Mike Dolan notes that these skills make ULS students stand out in the crowd during the highly competitive college admissions process. “Sure, University Lake School students have access to all the most important elements of a college-prep program: strong academic offerings, a highly-qualified faculty, and a strong emphasis on the arts and athletics, but the students here have access to so much more that is hard to quantify. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and flexible to meet the needs of all kinds of learners.Their teachers and the adult community around them inspire them to dream, create and wonder.They leave here not only with knowledge of academic subjects, but knowing themselves and what they have to offer to the world.”

Alumni of University Lake School agree. When asked about their experiences at ULS, graduates speak often about the life skills they

learned that have helped them succeed. 1994 graduate Peter Ward, Managing Partner of RSW Management, reflected on his time at ULS. “I truly believe without all the skills and tools that I was taught, neither I nor our company would be where we are today. Not only did I get a great education, but I learned about life, responsibility, and how to manage my time to balance my life and truly got the tools to succeed. The skills I learned at ULS enabled me to capitalize on my future educational experiences and go on to be successful in life.”

University Lake School is also very excited about the arrival of new Head of School, Paul Atkinson. Paul was most recently Head at the Berry Elementary and Middle School in Georgia. He is completing his coursework for a Doctorate in Education, and holds Masters degrees in Social Work (M.S.W.) and Teaching (M.A.T.). “I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of the University Lake School community. The school’s joy and warmth, exceptional programs, top-notch facilities, compelling traditions, and culture of caring are inspiring. It is a place with a strong sense of community, for the bonds among students, parents, faculty and staff are clearly apparent. I am enthusiastic about the renewal and growth our partnership will reap for ULS in the years to come.”

The legacy of the school’s rich history can be felt in its enduring connection to the founding families and alumni community, as well as the perpetuation of long-standing traditions like the Green and White competition and the Barn Sale.

Upper School students are putting their math and science skills into practice as they study the great blue heron rookery in the woods on their school campus.

Math teacher Nathan Smith and science teacher Steve Tomasini are collaborating on the effort to merge the two disciplines and give the students a way to apply their knowledge first-hand. Tomasini explains, “The rookery project came out of my desire to have a long term, hands on science project that can utilize several of the concepts presented in class. Our biology students learn about ecosystems, habitats and soil chemistry and the Environmental Science classes study land use policy, destruction of habitats, and overpopulation. All of these concepts can be studied first hand in the great blue heron rookery.” The teachers have been teaming up with Allen Schneider, a land surveyor with Bonestroo, Inc, a consulting engineering firm based in Mequon. Schneider is coordinating with the teachers to organize a public outreach project between the Society of Southeastern Wisconsin Land Surveyors and the students.

More than 50 University Lake School students have been working with land surveyors to locate and map the trees and nests that are home to approximately 75 nesting blue herons. The rookery is currently the largest concentration of great blue heron nests in Waukesha County. The primary goal for the students is to create a map with scientific data that can be used as an analysis tool for years to come. Schneider also hopes that the students will have a better appreciation for practical applications of math and the current technology used in the field of land surveying. “Land surveyors understand the need to balance land development with an eye towards protecting our natural resources. It is a very fulfilling experience to share our passion for surveying with the students and at the same time show them that there are real world applications for the math and science they are learning at the University Lake School."

What renowned metal sculptor Paul Bobrowitz, working as our Artist-inResidence, inspired our students to create this past spring was abundantly apparent.

“Spectacular Sculpture” was created at ULS as guest sculptor Paul Bobrowitz shared his expertise with lower school students.

Mr. Bobrowitz is a nationally known sculptor specializing in work using reclaimed metal and other recycled materials.

Recently, Molly won the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational on October 8th with a new state-record time of 13:44.39, where she outpaced the competition by 73 seconds.

Molly has been featured prominently in the local media with countless articles in the Lake Country Reporter and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (she won Athlete of the Week honors twice this season). Additionally, she was profiled by Time Warner Cable Sports 32, with the interview airing during halftime of the Brown Deer/New Berlin West football game on October 15th.

Molly succeeded in her quest for a third straight WIAA cross country state championship on October 30th at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids and blew away the competition with an official state record of 13:44.32.

Mr. Bobrowitz helped stimulate thought, emotion and joy as students designed and created work from discarded objects. It was truly a recycling project as all sculptures began with found objects.

Personal Integrity You would never know from the monthly “All School Assemblies” that ULS Junior Molly Seidel is running away with almost every award and honor the sport of cross country has to offer. Her modesty and integrity is beyond comparison. Never once does she mention how she did – she only refers to the team and hopes people will come cheer the them on. She is all class and a wonderful role model for our ULS students. Molly is already a three-time WIAA state champion in the 4K, and is ranked by ESPN/DyeStat as the 16th best female runner in the nation. In late September, Molly ran in the Janesville Craig Midwest Invitational, winning easily in 13:55.00, and giving her the top time in the nation in the 4K distance in 2010.

Character through Service The Wisconsin Lakes Partnership recently awarded the students of University Lake School with the 2009 Lake StewardshipYouth Award and truly exemplifies our own ULS motto “Character Through Service”. The award was given in recognition of the work the students have done over the last five years to restore a portion of the Oconomowoc River upstream from North Lake. The river restoration project is integrated within the 5th and 6th grade ULS science curriculum. Under the leadership of ULS teachers Joe Hardgrove and Jody Koehler, and mentors John Muelh of North Lake Management District, Charlie Shong of Pewaukee Lake Sanitary District, and Jayne Jenks of Waukesha County Citizen Stream Monitors, students have combined their classroom study of river ecology and restoration with hands-on experience rebuilding shorelines and creating wing dams. “This project allows the students to not only learn science in the real world, but to learn to work with community groups and see that their work can make a make a big difference to a natural habitat,” says Hardgrove.

According to Hardgrove, the role of the students in the restoration project will be expanding in future years as they become river monitors. In this capacity, students will be conducting a series of monthly and semi-annual tests on water quality as well as on the health of invertebrates living on the bottom of the river as part of a larger data collection program coordinated by the state of Wisconsin.

Lower/Middle School Head

“The Lower School is such a vibrant place with dedicated teachers, enthusiastic students, engaging lessons, and the most supportive parents on this planet.”

In preparation for this school year, the faculty has spent much time dialoguing about our philosophy of education and has collaborated with each other to make sound decisions based on the best teaching practices to meet our students’ needs. As a result, the teachers have chosen a new math series that combines the most powerful elements of standards-based instruction with the best approaches, and they will continue to discuss our curriculum at weekly meetings. We have also implemented changes to our daily morning routine with the student led pledge and morning announcements, and we have added weekly assemblies for student sharing. All classes have made a concerted effort to focus on using good manners and to be respectful at all times, so students have been practicing how to model this on the playground and at lunch. In a continued effort to care for our space, each class has been exploring how to integrate our all school unit activities on Sustainability and Stewardship into our curriculum to make our campus and world a better place.

Even though they’re little, and sometimes even brand-new to our ULS community, the pre-primary children have shown great ownership and pride in their school, as they understand their active role in this special school community. The junior kindergarten helped rebuild two cracked and splintered benches by removing rusty screws and weathered boards. This shows that everyone can and does make a difference at ULS! When the first and second graders aren’t recycling or helping with the worm compost bin, they are enthralled with their reading. The first graders have written books in Spanish, and the second graders can’t wait for their next mystery readers.

Mrs. Horner’s first grade classes wrote a version of Good Night Moon called Buenos Noches Primer Grado. It is available from the ULS library. What a great opportunity for students to create their own amazing stories and hear such enthusiastic readers share their favorites with the class!

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders each have a designated area on the ULS campus to demonstrate how they are stewards of the land. The 3rd graders are taking care of the outdoor classroom behind the Lower School and plan to cut back the buckthorn, add more wood chips, clear out the dead trees and build more benches. The 4th grade students have spent much time observing and studying the campus trees, wildlife, invasive species and plants. They are learning how they can protect and preserve our ULS environment. The 5th grade has created animal shelters in preparation for the winter as well as a community sitting area, inviting their JK buddies to their plot for story time. In May of 2010, sixth and seventh grade students germinated a wide variety of pumpkins in science class and planted two large beds behind the Stackner Middle School. After the rainy summer season, they were able to harvest some beautiful pumpkins and ornamental gourds!

The Lower School is such a vibrant place with dedicated teachers, enthusiastic students, engaging lessons, and the most supportive parents on this planet. I am excited to be part of the invigorating faculty discussions, and I am thrilled to come to work every day and to watch such happy students actually skip through the corridor because they are so eager to be here and thrive in such a nurturing environment where they are not only able to take ownership of their learning but also sustain our campus and become global citizens!

With the arrival of Mr. Atkinson as Head of School, ULS has the same opportunity presented as a time to look at what works well and what aspects of the program could be addressed and improved.

The community of Upper School faculty and students has had considerable discussion about the basic expectations of the Upper School student. Every suggestion we have had falls under the auspices of 3 principles:

Be Present Attend school and class; stay through the entire day; engage actively in class – listen, react and contribute; get involved in activities that will contribute to benefit all.

These main beliefs represent challenges on a variety of levels.

From the obvious to the ancillary, every ULS student needs to play an active role in the Upper School. Students who wish to shrink to the back of the classroom are not allowed to fall between the cracks. Further, students are nurtured by an amazing faculty, dedicated to the progress that each child can make in reaching and exceeding their potential. There is an aspect of self-determination that is intrinsic to the life of the Upper School student; each faces a responsibility to actively be their best.

The Upper School has embraced this opportunity to maintain our strengths and challenge ourselves to honestly assess where we can be better. Just as the students must be willing to change and grow, this division has great positive energy and is generating momentum to provide an even greater environment for student achievement.

2009-10 Athletics Year in Review

The Laker Cross Country squad was paced once again by sophomore sensation, Molly Seidel, who won her second cross country state championship in Wisconsin Rapids.

She was undefeated in her second season with an average margin of victory of 1:02 in seven invitationals.

Although small in numbers the harriers have been big in spirit.

Other medalists for the women this season have been sophomores Danielle Sayles and Hannah Glavas and freshman, Elayna Grove. The thin clad men were anchored by senior Andy Kaminski and junior Quinn Dolan.

The women’s field hockey team featured a strong senior class of Caiti Brownell, Hillary Rolfs, Nicolette Sra, Tonie Michaels, Katie Effertz, and Francesca Forcinito. Caiti, Hillary, Nicolette, Tonie, and junior goalkeeper Kate Seiberlich were selected to the all-conference team. Caiti and Tonie are now playing NCAA Division 1 field hockey at Saint Louis University and Denison University respectively.

The men’s basketball season was led by our new coaching staff of Danny Ehnert and Nathan Derks. The team’s overall record was 4-19, and they were 3-9 in the conference. The season ended with a loss to the Randolph Rockets, the eventual Division 4 state champions. Two players earned conference recognition, with Tommy Hiller winning first team allconference and Sean O’Neill on the second team. Tommy Hiller led the team in scoring at 16 points per game and rebounding at 6 rebounds per game, while Sean O’Neill led the team in assists at 3 per game.

The women’s basketball team finished with a .500 season record, and was notable for several individual accomplishments.

Junior Kaylen Podjaski and senior Sadie Millen were honored with all-conference awards. Sadie also became the women’s leading rebounder and shot blocker in ULS history, and Kaylen was ranked 3rd in the state with three-pointers made.

The alpine ski team had a very successful season, with the women’s team winning a state championship at Mt. LaCrosse in February. The team was led by a strong group of seniors in Hillary Rolfs, Tonie Michaels, and Katie Zastrow, with Hillary finishing 4th as an individual at the state championships. The women’s team earned 3rd place honors in their conference, and the JV team 5th. The men’s team was paced by junior Stephen Johnson who also qualified for state as an individual.

Seniors Jack Tyson and Braiden Sorgenfrei once again represented ULS on the Laker’s Ice Hockey co-op team with Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, and St. John’s Military. Braiden was a starting defenseman on the team, with Jack finding ice time and the back of the net at forward.

The 2010 coed tennis team finished their .500 season with wins against Cudahy, St. Francis, and Jefferson High Schools, and a 2nd place finish at the East Troy Invitational. The team was led by senior Yianni Glavas in number one singles, and juniors Quinn Dolan and Chenzo Scampini at two and three. Senior Evan Tuson and junior Victoria Mount competed in the number one doubles slot.

The women’s volleyball team was led by seniors Sadie Millen and Tina Dimicelli, both of whom were honored with allconference awards, and were also awarded all-tournament team honors.

The women’s soccer team had another successful year as a co-op with Lake Country Lutheran. Senior Caiti Brownell played on the defensive side, and junior Kaylen Podjaski threatened the goal as a forward.

The men’s soccer team finished a strong season, at times struggling with injuries. Junior goalkeeper Sean O’Neill won first team all-conference honors with his stellar play in the nets, and Stephen Johnson and Yianni Glavas were awarded second team honors. Senior defensive stopper Braiden Sorgenfrei was missed through most of the season due to an eye injury sustained during Fall Field Day.

The golf team enjoyed a challenging schedule in 2010, playing terrific courses and in prestigious tournaments. Highlights included hosting the Laker-Lancer Invite with St. John’s Miltary, the Lake Country Charity Invitational, a fundraiser for Cancer Research, the Waukesha County Championship and the Indian Trails Conference Championship. The team was led by junior Sean O’Neill, who was the medalist in several meets and missed sectional qualifying for the State tournament by 1 stroke.

The 2011 edition will include and experienced team joining Sean, with seniors Casey Litow and Stevie Johnson and junior Maddie McFadden.

The 2010 track and field team finished another stellar year with distance superstar Molly Seidel leading the charge.

Throughout the season Molly competed in area meets against top D1 competition. In a repeat of 2009 Molly claimed WIAA D3 state championships in the 1600M and 3200M events.

THE 1956 CIRCLE University Lake School was founded in 1956 to become a premier college preparatory school in the Lake Country of Waukesha County.

Throughout its history, the support and dedication of many individuals, businesses and foundations have enabled ULS to become that premier college preparatory school.

The 1956 Circle grants lifetime membership to those donors whose gifts have reached a cumulative total of $5,000 or more to one or more of the School’s charitable giving funds.

This circle encompasses seven levels of giving and includes contributions received from 1956 through June 30, 2010.

Katherine Davis Tornehl Memorial Fund Established in May of 2008 to recognize and celebrate the life of Kate Tornehl. A teacher for 35 years, Kate was instrumental in creating and leading the pre-primary department, bringing the Reggio Emilia approach to ULS. Funds will be used for professional development, specifically to immerse faculty in the theory and practices of the Reggio Emilia approach by sending teachers to Reggio Emilia, Italy for their immersion courses.

Established in January 2008 through the estate of Robert W. Leaf to provide scholarship aid to deserving Upper School students. Mr. Leaf was a resident of Oconomowoc, a long time teacher, and a dear friend of the ULS Barn.

Second Mile Faculty Award Endowed Fund The Second Mile Faculty Recognition Award, established in 2007, is presented each year to a ULS faculty member who exemplifies those traits most valued in our teachers by the student body. Over 250 people attended Thursday night’s festivities and 520 shoppers came of the weekend to the Spring Faire and visited wonder shops and vendors at the spruced up Barn. This second time event raised more than $54,000 over the three day weekend. Sponsorships, ticket sales, vendor donations, the auction, and great shopping were all a tremendous success.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for coming today and sharing this special day with us; today we celebrate the end of one journey and look forward to the next.

Looking back at all the experiences we’ve had at ULS and all of our accomplishments, we realize that none of it could have happened without the love and support from our friends, family, and the caring community at ULS. There are no words to express our appreciation for helping us to grow and become the talented people we are today.

Graduation is a simple ceremony, but it commemorates many years of friendships forged, experiences enjoyed, and memories made. From “assuming the pine” at basketball games, to cheering for your team on field days, to comparing senior projects, this journey has built a strong foundation to prepare us for new and exciting experiences at college.

On the first day of Leadership 9, Mr. Dolan read Oh, The Places You’ll Go, by Dr. Seuss.

The book aptly describes the journey we will undertake as we step out of our University Lake School home and begin something new.

There will be many ups and many downs. It will require courage.

But just like the character in Dr. Seuss’ book, we will persevere.

We take the tools we have gleaned from our time at ULS. We are ready. In the words of Dr. Seuss,

“Today is your day!

Your mountain is waiting.

So…get on your way.”

Institutional Advancement Assistant Kathe Manegold Biersach ’64 and Bill Biersach ’63 tell us that they recently traveled to Goteborg, Sweden to visit Katy Gutschenritter Nicholson ’64 and her husband, Nigel. They then drove to Oslo, Norway to visit AFS student Grete Raeder Østby ’62 and her husband, Jon Birgir Østby.

Katy’s business is intercultural training and coaching for global corporations.

Nigel has recently retired from his job as a civil engineer, specializing in water systems. Grete is a retired teacher of high school French and English.

They found she has an amazing recall of 1960’s songs and television advertising jingles, as well as all the lyrics to the ULS school song. Her husband, Jon, is the former head of all the museums, libraries, and archives of Norway. “We were the very fortunate recipients of a wonderful, day long, personal tour of many historic sites in Oslo.

Needless to say, we all shared many fond memories of our ULS olden days,” they write.

Charlie Brumder ’68 has joined the Children’s Hospital Foundation as development director. Charlie will focus his efforts on critical needs at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, including expansion of the hospital’s surgical space, emergency depar tment, and Herma Heart Center.

Sister Kathy ’75 wants to point out to everyone that Bruce got in just under the wire of his 50th birthday!

John Koepke ’91 continues to operate Koepke Farms, Inc. in partnership with his father and uncles, along with serving on the advisory board for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection. John and his wife, Kim, have three boys – Auggie, Colton, and Samuel.

Ryan Olson ’93 recently purchased ABEE, Inc. (Adventure Based Experiential Educators). ABEE, Inc. is a full service challenge course company that builds ropes courses, zip lines, climbing walls, canopy tours, and adventure parks. They also provide training and equipment sales. Check it out at www.abeeinc.com. Ryan lives in Holmen, WI with his wife Michelle, and their children Samantha and Benjamin.

Congratulations to Jim Barkow ’94 and Holly Lynn Siebers on their recent marriage. Holly and Jim were married April 9th on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii.

After honeymooning in Hawaii, they returned home to San Francisco where Holly is employed

by AT&T Interactive and Jim is the co-founder of Longboard Media.

Best wishes to Ruth Koepke ’94 and Cody Hiemke on their marriage April 8th. Ruth and Cody have a 10 acre sheep farm near Stoughton, WI. Ruth is working as an epidemiologist for UW and the Public Health Department in Madison.

After completing graduate school at the University of Louisville, Lauren Boyler ’01 accepted a position with the Aurora Sports Medicine Institute in Milwaukee.

She is contracted to Marquette University as a licensed athletic trainer, primarily supporting the men’s soccer program.

Best wishes to Katie Moranchek ’02 and Geoff Wold ’02 on their recent wedding on August 21st in the Caribbean. Katie is a graphic artist at Digital Edge, and Geoff is a sales manager with Apple Automotive. They are making their home in Oconomowoc.

Justin Booth ’03 recently enlisted in the United States Air Force. He will begin basic training shortly.

Adam Wegner ’97 is currently in his third year of medical school at Vanderbilt University and doing his clinical rotations. Adam is a 2001 graduate of the College of Wooster.

John Fritzke ’99 recently began his pursuit of a law degree at Marquette University. In his spare time, John teaches sixth grade math at ULS, and is our Athletic Director.

While on break from Rennselar Polytechnical Institute in Troy, NY this summer, Tor Hagemann ’09 continued to bless our technology depar tment with his help for the second consecutive year. Thank you, Tor; your skills are greatly appreciated!

Former faculty member, Ellen Langill, recently wrote: “I had the great pleasure of teaching at ULS from 1971-1989, and have many great memories from those days. I was recently with a group of some of my favorite alumni and they urged me to send in an update about my ‘post-ULS life.’ So, I agreed to do so…. Thanks and best wishes to ULS!”

Congratulations to Marc Reese ’04 and Cathi Brownell ’05 who were married in Oconomowoc on June 19th. Cathi and Marc are making their home in Indianapolis where Cathi is attending Indiana University School of Medicine. Marc received his masters from Penn State.

Kyle Duke ’05 has been accepted into the graduate program at the Illinois Institute of Design in Chicago, beginning in January.

Kyle was the only 2010 graduate accepted into the program this year!

Ryan Edmund Myhre into their family on February 3rd. Their daughter, Hannah, is very excited to be a “big sister.” Congratulations!

Jalissa Booth ’07 is in her senior year at UW-Stout, majoring in Art Eduction.

Emily Metz ’05 and Joshua Meredith were married on August 14th at the Oconomowoc Lake Club. Joshua is a recent graduate of Syracuse University School of Law, and Emily is in her second year at Seton Hall University Law School.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in film and television from Boston College, Erich Onzik ’05 traveled many parts of the world and wrote a screenplay. He has recently returned to Wisconsin.

Tiffany Bava Bernard ’07 currently lives in Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada with husband Nathaniel, and their 10-month old daughter, Eliana Grace.Tiffany is enjoying being a full time mom to Eli, while Nat is a chief programmer and installer for a security company.

Dr. Ellen Langill was elected president of the Board of Curators of The State Historical Society of Wisconsin, effective July 1, 2010.

The Society houses the largest North American History Library outside the Library of Congress, and also operates the State History Museum in Madison, as well as 13 historic sites around Wisconsin, including Old World and Pendarvis, etc. The Board of 24 curators consists of elected members as well as four state legislators – two from each party – and two gubernatorial appointees.

An author of more than 20 books about business and legal history, including the City of Milwaukee’s official sesquicentennial history in 1996, Ellen teaches history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

She and her husband Ross live in Waukesha and have two daughters, Kjersten and Kari. She has many wonderful memories of teaching history and Latin at ULS, of Senior Seminars, coaching field hockey and basketball, and working with college guidance and sends fond greetings to former students.
