PRE-K AT IDEA Where the Road to College Begins

IDEA’s Pre-K program offers so much more than a traditional Pre-K classroom. It’s a learning-intensive half-day program that gradually develops the tools children need to engage with and retain the lessons they’re exposed to. When it’s time for a full day at school in kindergarten, they will be more than ready.

MATH MASTERY Scholars learn their numbers, their shapes, how to count, add, subtract, and more in our math Pre-K curriculum. Our math lessons provide the practice needed to achieve mastery.

LITERACY FOUNDATION Scholars learn basic vocabulary, sentence forms, and more in our English language Pre-K curriculum. For non-native English speakers, our Español to English program teaches the skills Spanish-speaking scholars need to gradually transition fully into our English language program.

THE JOY OF LEARNING One of the greatest feelings a parent can have is to watch their children grow and take pride in their own personal development. Nothing gets children more excited about learning than having fun and enjoying the process, so we infuse a joy of learning into our Pre-K classrooms.

CITIZENSHIP, SCIENCE, AND SOCIAL SKILLS Beyond reading, language, and math, our teachers guide Pre-K scholars through science lessons, field trips, and activities that promote academic, social, and emotional growth.

The Overall Impact of Classroom-Based Pre-K1 Data shows that scholars who enter school in Pre-K, as opposed to Kindergarten, have a competitive advantage over their peers and are: • More likely (by 11.4%) to graduate from high school

ELEMENTARY AT IDEA A Balanced Approach with High Expectations

Our Pre-K–5 academy curriculum provides a foundation that puts scholars on the path to graduation and success in college. All elementary scholars focus on core subjects including reading, writing and math. Our unique approach also provides every scholar with opportunities to develop problem-solving and social skills.

Our youngest scholars are exposed to a detailed and systematic approach to learning that allows them to build on their skills in each grade level.

IDEA’S CULTURE OF READING In IDEA’s K-5 academy environment, we create a culture of reading to help scholars master the art of reading fluency and comprehension that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Students are learning to read, by identifying letters and their sounds, and how sounds form words. Students are developing an understanding that words form sentences and sentences form stories. Teaching sounds helps your student read many more words. If we taught your student these 10 sight words, they would know 10 words. When we teach them sounds, they will know 350 “3 sound” words, 4,000 “4 sound” words and 21,000 “5 sound” words. Students practice reading aloud and writing, with a focus on letter formation, every day at school. Students should read with their families for 30 minutes every night.

MASTERING MATH

Our IDEA Academy scholars are excelling in their essential core classes.

Students are learning how to solve real-world problems, not just memorize math facts. Every day, students learn new skills to apply in the real-world and different strategies for problem-solving using hands-on tools and models.

MAYA BENAVIDES READS 190,000 WORDS as a second grader at IDEA San Benito. That’s the same as reading Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone almost three times! Half-way through her 2nd grade school year, she mastered the second grade reading material. She is delighted not to have to wait in place with her adventures in reading - she has eagerly moved on to third grade materials.

When Maya first entered an idea classroom, her teachers fostered her reading growth in small group instruction of no more than ten students. Because of the small, leveled reading groups, Maya never had to feel anxious about becoming a great reader. While idea’s program challenges students, it’s also motivating to learn together with friends who constantly support each other, maya reflected. This is how she learned to read with the confidence she has today.

At IDEA, we integrate cutting-edge education technologies into learning through our ilearning hotspots and accelerated reader (AR) zones, as early as first grade and extending all the way to eighth.

All these programs together are contributing to outstanding academic success. Whether it is in reading or mathematics, our students work with passionate teachers to shoot for the moon.

INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING Across the Pre-K – 12 Continuum • We believe reading is the key to a successful education that requires frequent practice. Our AR program gives students in grades 1st – 7th daily opportunities to practice reading at their own independent reading level. The ultimate goal is to increase reading growth through substantial amounts of practice and to make reading fun for all students.

• In our iLearning Hotspot space, 1st-7th grade students work in a computer program that adjusts to their level to review foundational math concepts, re-learn and practice concepts that the math teacher is covering, and preview future concepts. We believe that this extra math practice helps students to not only master math concepts, but to also learn to enjoy it • We believe that through fitness and movement; our students will increase their rates of learning. Our PE department has implemented a technology to track the quality rate of movement. The wrist-based monitor allow students to challenge themselves to meet their daily fitness minutes of Moderate to Vigorous fitness goals.

• Students participate in PE several times a week in grades 1st-7th and have to complete 1 PE course in high school.

• We offer the full continuum of services and educational settings for students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs). We have certified teachers and licensed personnel providing support for students such as speech therapy, occupational or physical therapy, and academic or behavioral interventions so that students are able to meet high academic expectations and reach their full potential with the level of support they require.

• We take responsibility for creating an environment that meets each individual child’s needs through programs like speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and adaptive PE. • We believe every student can meet their academic goals. If your student has difficulty with reading or math, a staff member trained in providing intervention will work with your student in a small group during the school day in a dedicated intervention time.

• There is also additional intervention support available after school and on Saturdays.

• Our goal is for every student to end the school year either on grade level or close their academic gap by 2 years so that they are on track to meet AP goals and to succeed in college.

Leveraging Our Resources for Individualization: CSI Critical Scholar Intervention, known as CSI, is additional reading and math instructional time for our most struggling scholars in grades 3–7. In CSI, scholars work in small groups using a research-based intervention program to address skill gaps. Scholars engage in CSI during AR Zone/iLearning Hotspot/ Blended Learning Space time.

MIDDLE SCHOOL AT IDEA Ensuring a Successful Transition

Middle School at IDEA may seem hard – taking Pre-AP courses and engaging in more comprehensive areas of study, but IDEA provides scholars with the support, guidance, and instruction they need to ensure each scholar reaches their highest potential. This includes access to college counselors, expert teachers, college field lessons, and a variety of extracurricular, community-based and leadership opportunities beyond the classroom.

PRE-ADVANCED PLACEMENT Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) coursework is built specifically for our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade IDEA scholars. Through these courses, scholars learn to master strategies that prepare them for the next phase of IDEA’s college preparatory program—high school.

Pre-AP courses get scholars ready for Advanced Placement (AP) courses in the 9th grade and ultimately improve college readiness. Our academic model at IDEA ensures scholars are preparing for college at the start of middle school.

HIGH SCHOOL AT IDEA College For All

To create a college-like experience in our high schools, we require all students to take a minimum off 11 Advanced Placement courses.

Students who take AP courses and pass the exam at the end of the year are more likely to graduate from college. Students who pass AP exams can earn college credit; a student who passes all 11 courses can enter college as a Sophomore! Our goal is for every student to be successful in college. Everything that we do as a school is planned with that ultimate goal in mind.

Scholars will take The Road To and Through College course in all four years of high school. In this class, they’ll define their own passion and purpose, and align them with the college or university that is the best fit for them.

In 11th grade, scholars will be encouraged to participate in the IDEA Collegiate Summer Away Program (CSAP). Through CSAP, they will attend summer programs at colleges and universities across the country before they start their senior year.

College Signing Day is an event where scholars reveal their college choice to a packed arena of IDEA staff, friends, and family. It’s a time to commemorate their hard work as they transition to college!

Scholars receive the financial and personal assistance they need to succeed in and graduate from college. The Class of 2018 secured more than $41 million in grants and scholarships, and thanks to the generous support of IDEA staff, students can receive zero-interest emergency loans. Our counselors and alumni team also offer personal connection and support throughout each scholar’s college commitment­—from start to finish.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS AT IDEA Frequently Asked Questions

DOES IDEA SERVE STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS OR 504 PLANS? Yes. IDEA Public Schools serves and provides equal educational opportunity and a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to scholars with Special Education or 504 eligibility and 33% of our population are identified as English Language Learners.

WHAT DOES IDEA SPECIAL EDUCATION LOOK LIKE AT IDEA? Scholars identified with special needs are serviced via their IEP (Individualized Education Plan). More specifically, IDEA Public Schools initiates a service delivery approach that offers intervention to all scholars who need extra help to reach grade level academic proficiency. Here are more details:

• Pre-K, K, 1st and 2nd grade - Direct Instruction (DI) is the curriculum that is utilized at each campus for Pre-K–2nd grade scholars. Every scholar in DI is receiving instruction at their individual level in Reading, Writing, and Math.

• 3rd through 12th grade - IDEA always seeks to provide scholars instruction in the Least Restrictive Environment, but support services are offered along a continuum from being fully main-streamed into general education classrooms to a self-contained classroom with low scholar/teacher ratio based on each scholar’s individual needs per their IEP.

DOES IDEA PUBLIC SCHOOLS OFFER A LIFE SKILLS UNIT (SELF-CONTAINED) FOR MY SCHOLAR? Although the self-contained classrooms are not at every IDEA campus, we have strategically placed these campuses in our regions so that if a scholar requires this setting, they are able to attend a campus nearby to receive the support they need.

The centralized locations allow IDEA to focus its resources towards helping scholars in these environments. Assignment to one of those classrooms will be made by the ARD Committee as appropriate and per IEP.

MY SCHOLAR WAS IN A BEHAVIOR UNIT AT THE PREVIOUS DISTRICT. WILL IDEA PUBLIC SCHOOLS PLACE MY SCHOLAR IN A SIMILAR UNIT? IDEA Public Schools will offer comparable support services for any scholar based on their need. In the case of a scholar who requires behavioral support, the comparable service will be provided through the scholar’s behavior intervention plan developed through the ARD process. The scholar’s ARD Committee will determine the scholar’s placement based on the Least Restrictive Environment.

WILL MY SCHOLAR BE PROVIDED THE RELATED SERVICES AS REQUIRED BY THEIR IEP? IDEA Public Schools will provide related services (ex. Speech, OT, PT, AI, VI) as noted in the scholar’s IEP through their employees or a contract company that is employed through the school district.

WHAT IF MY SCHOLAR IS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE 504 SERVICES? A scholar’s 504 accommodation plan will be followed according to the scholar’s documented needs. If intervention is needed based on the criteria established by the district, the scholar will be placed in an intervention class. This includes services for dyslexia via our Direct Instruction Decoding program.

WHAT TYPE OF SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE FOR MY SCHOLAR WHO IS AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER? IDEA identifies scholars who are English Language Learners within 20 days of entry into our schools so that we can offer them the type of instructional supports that the Texas Education Agency recommends for scholars at different levels of English language acquisition. We offer targeted language acquisition support programs such as Imagine Learning, Español to English, Direct Instruction for Spoken English, and Rosetta Stone for our scholars during their intervention blocks.

Donde Inicia El Camino A La Universidad El programa Pre-K de IDEA ofrece mucho más que un aula tradicional de Pre-K. Es un programa de medio día de aprendizaje intensivo que desarrolla gradualmente las herramientas que los niños necesitan para participar y retener las lecciones que se les enseñan. Cuando llegue el momento de un día completo de escuela en el Kínder, ellos estarán más que listos.

MAESTRIA EN MATEMATICAS Los estudiantes aprenden sus números, sus formas cómo contar, sumar, restar y mucho más en nuestro plan de estudios de matemáticas en Pre-K. Nuestras lecciones de matemáticas proporcionan la práctica necesaria para lograr el dominio.

FUNDACION DE LA ALFABETIZACION Los estudiantes aprenden el vocabulario básico, formas de oraciones y aún más en nuestro plan de estudios de Pre-K. LA CULTURA DE LECTURA DE IDEA En el ambiente de la Academia K-5 de IDEA, creamos una cultura de la lectura para ayudar los estudiantes a dominar el arte de leer con fluidez y comprensión que llevarán con ellos por el resto de sus vidas. Los alumnos aprenden a leer identificando las letras y sus sonidos y la forma en que los sonidos forman palabras. Los estudiantes desarrollan una comprensión de que las palabras forman oraciones y las oraciones historias. Enseñar los sonidos ayuda a su estudiante a leer muchas más palabras.

Si nosotros enseñamos a su estudiante 10 palabras, solo sabrían 10 palabras.

MAYA BENAVIDES LEE 190,000 PALABRAS como estudiante de segundo grado en IDEA San Benito. ¡Eso es lo mismo que leer “Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal” casi tres veces! A la mitad del segundo grado en el año escolar dominó el material de lectura de segundo grado. Ella está encantada de no tener que esperar para leer sus aventuras y ha pasado con entusiasmo a materiales de tercer grado.

Cuando Maya entró por primera vez en un aula de IDEA, sus maestros fomentaron su crecimiento en la lectura con la instrucción en grupos pequeños de no más de diez estudiantes. Debido a estos pequeños grupos de lectura nivelados, Maya nunca tuvo que sentirse ansiosa por convertirse en una gran lectora. Mientras que el programa de IDEA es un desafío para los estudiantes, también es motivador aprender junto con amigos que se apoyan constantemente, reflexionó Maya. De esta forma es como ella aprendió a leer con la confianza que tiene hoy.

APRENDIZAJE INDIVIDUALIZADO A través de Pre-K -12 Continuo • Creemos que la lectura es la clave para una educación exitosa que requiere una práctica frecuente. Nuestro programa AR da a los estudiantes en los grados 1° a 7° oportunidades diarias para practicar la lectura en su propio nivel de manera independiente. El objetivo final es aumentar el crecimiento de la lectura a través de una cantidad considerable de práctica y de hacer que la lectura sea divertida para todos los estudiantes.

• En nuestros puntos de acceso “iLearning”, los estudiantes de 1° a 7° grado trabajan en un programa de computadora que se ajusta a su nivel para repasar y practicar los conceptos básicos que el maestro matemáticas está cubriendo, y obtener una vista previa de conceptos futuros. Creemos que esta práctica de matemáticas adicional ayuda a los estudiantes no solo a dominar los conceptos de esta materia, sino que también aprende a disfrutarlo.

• Creemos que a través de la condición física y el movimiento; nuestros alumnos aumentarán sus tasas de aprendizaje. Nuestro departamento de educación física ha implementado una tecnología para rastrear la tasa de calidad del movimiento. Un monitor en la muñeca permite a los estudiantes ponerse a prueba para cumplir con sus minutos diarios de aptitud física de objetivos moderados a vigorosos.

• Los estudiantes participan en educación física varias veces a la semana en los grados 1° a 7° y tienen que completar 1 curso de educación física en la escuela secundaria.

Aprovechando nuestros recursos para la individualización: CSI Intervención Académica Crítica, conocida como CSI, es el tiempo adicional de instrucción en lectura y matemáticas para nuestros alumnos con más dificultades en los grados 3° - 7°. En CSI, los estudiantes trabajan en grupos pequeños utilizando un programa de intervención basado en la investigación para recortar las brechas de habilidades. Los alumnos participan en CSI durante el tiempo de Zonas de Lectura Acelerada /Puntos de Acceso “iLearning” /Espacio de Aprendizaje Combinado.

ESCUELA SECUNDARIA EN IDEA Asegurando una Transición Exitosa La escuela secundaria en IDEA puede parecer difícil: tomando cursos de Pre-AP y participando en áreas de estudio más completas, pero IDEA proporciona a los alumnos el apoyo, la orientación y la instrucción necesaria para garantizar que cada alumno desarrolle su máximo potencial. Esto incluye el acceso a consejeros universitarios, maestros expertos, lecciones universitarias de campo y una variedad de oportunidades extracurriculares, comunitarias y de liderazgo más allá del aula.

COLOCACIÓN PRE-AVANZADA El trabajo del curso de Colocación Pre-Avanzada (Pre-AP) está construido específicamente para nuestros alumnos de IDEA de 6°, 7° y 8° grados. A través de estos cursos, los alumnos aprenden a dominar estrategias que los preparan para la próxima fase de Preparatoria del programa de IDEA para la Universidad.

Los cursos Pre-AP preparan a los estudiantes para los cursos de Colocación Avanzada (AP) en el 9° grado y finalmente mejoran la preparación universitaria.

Nuestro modelo académico en IDEA asegura que los estudiantes se estén preparando para la universidad al comienzo de la escuela intermedia.

ESCUELA PREPARATORIA EN IDEA College For All (Universidad para Todos)

Para crear una experiencia como la universitaria en nuestras escuelas secundarias, requerimos que todos los estudiantes tomen un mínimo de 11 cursos de Colocación Avanzada (AP). Los estudiantes que toman cursos AP y aprueban el examen de fin de año tienen más probabilidades de graduarse de la universidad. Los estudiantes que pasan los exámenes AP pueden obtener créditos universitarios; ¡Un estudiante que aprueba los 11 cursos puede ingresar a la universidad como estudiante de segundo año! Las lecciones de campo universitario, que comienzan para nuestros alumnos desde el 1° grado, son solo una de las muchas formas en que nos esforzamos por crear un ambiente que enseña a los estudiantes a soñar en grande y entienden que pueden asistir a la universidad de su elección.

EL Día de la Firma Universitaria es un evento donde los estudiantes revelan su universidad elección en una arena llena de personal de IDEA, amigos y familiares. ¡Es el momento de conmemorar su arduo trabajo mientras hacen la transición a la universidad!

Los estudiantes reciben la asistencia financiera y personal que necesitan para tener éxito y graduarse de la universidad. La clase del 2018 aseguró más de $41 millones en subvenciones y becas, y gracias al generoso apoyo del personal de IDEA, los estudiantes pueden recibir cero intereses en préstamos de emergencia. Nuestros asesores y equipo de egresados también ofrecen conexión personal y apoyo de principio a fin a lo largo del compromiso universitario de cada estudiante.

Los estudiantes tomarán el curso “EL Camino Hacia y Durante la Universidad” en los cuatro años de secundaria. En esta clase definirán su propia pasión y propósito, y se alinearán con el colegio universitario o universidad que mejor se adapte a ellos.

En el 11° grado se alentará a los estudiantes a participar en el Programa Universitario de Verano Afuera de IDEA (IDEA Collegiate Summer Away Program (CSAP). Mediante CSAP, ellos asistirán a programas de verano en colegios universitarios y universidades de todo el país antes de que comiencen su último año.

PROGRAMAS ESPECIALES EN IDEA Preguntas Frecuentes

¿IDEA SIRVE A ESTUDIANTES CON NECESIDADES DE EDUCACIÓN ESPECIAL O PLANES 504?

Si. IDEA Public Schools sirve y brinda igualdad de oportunidades educativas y una educación pública apropiada y gratuita (FAPE) a estudiantes con educación especial o elegibilidad 504 y el 33% de nuestra población se identifica como Estudiantes Aprendiendo Inglés.

¿CÓMO ES LA EDUCACIÓN ESPECIAL EN IDEA? Los alumnos identificados con necesidades especiales reciben servicios a través de su IEP (Plan de Educación Individualizado). Más específicamente IDEA Public Schools inició un enfoque de prestación de servicios que ofrece intervención a todos los alumnos que necesitan ayuda adicional para llegar a su nivel de grado. Aquí hay más detalles:

• Pre-K, K, 1° y 2° grados: Instrucción directa (DI) es el plan de estudios que se utiliza en cada campus para estudiantes de Pre-K-2° grados. Cada alumno en DI está recibiendo instrucción a nivel individual en lectura, escritura y matemáticas.

• 3° a 12° grados: IDEA siempre busca brindar instrucción académica en el área menos restrictiva,

pero los servicios de soporte se ofrecen a lo largo de un proceso continuo desde su transmisión principal en aulas de educación general a un aula autónoma con una baja proporción escolar / docente con base en las necesidades individuales de cada estudiante según su IEP.

¿OFRECE IDEA PUBLIC SCHOOLS UNA UNIDAD DE HABILIDADES PARA LA VIDA (INDEPENDIENTE) PARA MI ESTUDIANTE? Aunque las aulas independientes no están en todos los campus de IDEA, hemos colocado estratégicamente estos campus en nuestras regiones para que, si un estudiante requiere esta configuración, pueda asistir a un campus cercano para recibir el apoyo que necesita. Las ubicaciones centralizadas permiten a IDEA enfocar sus recursos para ayudar a los alumnos en estos entornos. La asignación a uno de esos salones será realizada por el Comité ARD según corresponda y según el IEP.

¿MI ESTUDIANTE ESTABA EN UNA UNIDAD DE COMPORTAMIENTO EN EL DISTRITO ANTERIOR, COLOCARA IDEA PUBLIC SCHOOLS A MI ESTUDIANTE EN UNA UNIDAD SIMILAR? IDEA Public Schools ofrecerá servicios de apoyo comparables para cualquier estudiante en función de sus necesidades.

En el caso de un alumno que requiere apoyo en conducta, el servicio comparable se proporcionará a través del plan de intervención de conducta del alumno desarrollado a través del proceso ARD. El Comité ARD del alumno determinará la ubicación del estudiante en función de ambiente menos restrictivo.

¿SE PROPORCIONARÁN A MI ESTUDIANTE LOS SERVICIOS QUE REQUIERA SU IEP? IDEA Public Schools proporcionará servicios relacionados (por ejemplo, Lenguaje, OT, PT, AI, VI) como se indica en el IEP del alumno a través de sus empleados o la compañía contratada que se emplea a través del distrito escolar.

¿QUÉ PASA SI MI ESTUDIANTE ES ELEGIBLE PARA RECIBIR SERVICIOS 504?

El plan de alojamiento 504 de un estudiante se seguirá de acuerdo con las necesidades documentadas del estudiante.

Si la intervención es de acuerdo con los criterios establecidos por el distrito, el estudiante será colocado en una clase de intervención. Esto incluye servicios para dislexia a través de nuestro programa de decodificación de instrucción directa.

¿QUÉ TIPO DE APOYO ESTÁ DISPONIBLE PARA MI ESTUDIANTE APRENDIENDO INGLES? IDEA identifica a los estudiantes que aprenden inglés dentro de los 20 días posteriores al ingreso a nuestras escuelas, para que podamos ofrecerles el tipo de apoyo instructivo que la Agencia de Educación de Texas recomienda para estudiantes en diferentes niveles de aprendizaje del idioma inglés. Ofrecemos programas de soporte de aprendizaje de idiomas específicos como Imagine Learning, Español a Inglés, Instrucción Directa para Inglés Hablado y Rosetta Stone para nuestros alumnos durante sus bloques de intervención.

Como padres/tutores que desean que nuestro hijo/hija tenga éxito, nos comprometemos a que: 1.

Apoyaré a mi hijo/hija en la escuela y lo alentaré a hacer su mejor esfuerzo en todo el trabajo escolar. Esto significa que revisaré la tarea, firmaré su agenda diariamente y dejaré que mi hijo llame o envíe un mensaje de texto al maestro cuando necesite ayuda utilizando los métodos de comunicación definidos por el campus.

Me aseguraré de que mi hijo llegue a la escuela a tiempo todos los días. Haré todo lo posible para programar las citas con el médico después del horario escolar. Me aseguraré de que él/ella se ausente de la escuela solo cuando sea absolutamente necesario.

3.

Permitiré que mi hijo/hija asista a clases de campo y programas de verano y que participe en actividades extracurriculares, incluso cuando estas ocurran después del horario escolar. Entiendo que las malas calificaciones o el mal comportamiento podrían evitar que él/ella participe.

Me pondré en contacto con el maestro de mi hijo/hija cuando tenga preguntas, inquietudes o comentarios sobre su educación.

Compartiré inquietudes, ideas y otros comentarios con el maestro y si es necesario con el director.

Permitiré que mi hijo/hija se quede después de la escuela cuando el trabajo esté incompleto o necesiten apoyo adicional. Entraré a la escuela para firmar su salida y proporcionaré transporte si es necesario.

Permitiré que mi hijo/hija se quede después de la escuela para recibir tutoría o asista a la escuela los sábados para aprovechar estas oportunidades de aprendizaje si él/ella requiere ayuda adicional.

7.

Seré lo más activo posible en la educación de mi hijo/hija, leeré cuidadosamente todos los documentos enviados a casa, responderé la comunicación de la escuela que monitorea las calificaciones de mi hijo en línea, y asistiré a las reuniones de padres y recogeré las boletas de calificaciones.

Me aseguraré de que mi hijo/hija siga el código de vestimenta de IDEA.
