A modern look for Essential’s brochure to celebrate the start of a new decade

It’s time for Tempo

Essential Bathrooms has announced the launch of its new, contemporary brochure for 2020.

A new, more refined version of Ideal Standard’s popular Tempo mixer has been launched in the UK and is ready to order.

Set to be available to retailers from February, the brochure will encompass the brand’s new ranges of towel warmers and classic furniture, Maine.

Referred to as “Tempo Slim”, the stylish new tap has a tight radius where the body meets the spout and a sharp edge finish on the spout, adding a more elegant overall appearance to any residential bathroom.

Embracing both contemporary and traditional design, the Maine furniture range boasts soft-close functionality on the doors and drawers and is available in two, on-trend colour options - Cashmere Ash and Graphite Grey.

This slimmer model has been made possible by the development of a new 38mm Firmaflow cartridge, which in the case of Tempo, allows the body diameter to be decreased from 51mm to 47mm.

Essential has also boosted its portfolio with 15 towel warmers, which come in two colours, Chrome and Anthracite, making an ideal addition to the contemporary collection.

Tempo Slim is now available in two variants – one with no waste, and the other with pop-up waste.

Salamander Pumps boosts its product offering with new Mainsbooster range Salamander Pumps has launched a new mains booster range, aimed at creating a simple solution to boosting mains water pressure and flow.

The new range, comprising 11 products, features inline pumps and accumulator tanks, and provides a quiet, lightweight and easy-to-install solution.

The range is designed to make specification much simpler for the installer, without the need for a Salamander employee to arrange to visit and assess and install. The mains boosting range includes: • CombiBoost - an inline pump, boosting mains water flow up to 10L per minute • HomeBoost - an intelligent inline mains pump, which recognises when water pressure and flow are low and automatically boosts this up to 12L per minute.

Armitage Shanks launches innovative Sphero urinal range for commercial washrooms

Armitage Shanks has launched Sphero, its new collection of intelligent urinals.

The elegant range features in-built smart technology that allows for greater levels of cleanliness, easier installation and maintenance, as well as water saving benefits for all commercial spaces.

Sphero’s unique circular, concave shape has been designed to minimise splashing while also improving the cleanliness, durability and efficacy of the urinals. The new rimless designs also eradicate the buildup of stagnant water, a key issue with traditional urinals.

The range comprises three different sized urinals: Mini, Midi and Maxi that are suitable for premium high and medium traffic environments.

The Maxi model has an in-built electric sensor, which optimises the product’s flush count and water usage. It also incorporates a patented maintenance bracket with innovative hinges so installers can easily access the inner workings of the urinals.

GROHE continues with its vision of ‘Shaping the future of water’ with the launch of its Rainshower 310 SmartConnect shower head, which will provide designers with greater design flexibility and the opportunity for users to experience a premium shower experience that is tailored to their personal preference.

The shower head has a diameter of 310mm and is available in round or square designs. It explores showering in the digital age in a new way. Using Bluetooth connectivity to a battery-powered, round remote control which can be placed freely in the shower to select and control the shower head’s spray types. The shower head offers two different spray types; the relaxing Rain spray and the powerful, invigorating Jet spray. There is also the option to combine both sprays together. Operation via the wireless control means easy showering for all users thanks to the ability to change spray patterns at a height and position that is easily accessible for all.

The Rainshower 310 Connect can be easily installed, because of its battery operation and no concealed box it can also be connected to an existing shower system and arm making it perfect for retrofitting.

The Rainshower 310 Connect has already received several prestigious design accolades including iF Award 2019 and the Red Dot Award for Product Design 2019.

Roca’s new coloured brassware Consumers are using colour to design bathrooms that reflect their own personal style and create spaces that are functional yet stylish whilst aligning with their own individual aesthetic.

Baths, basins and brassware have increasingly become available in a variety of colour options in line with market trends. To meet this demand Roca has introduced new Everlux PVD brassware coatings to complement its existing product offering.

Roca’s new Everlux finishes are a stylish addition to any bathroom space and are available in seven new colours for selected brassware ranges. The PVD coatings have been through an ionisation process which creates the metal attraction. The fast rotation of the product helps to develop a uniform coating and ensures an aesthetic appearance. The benefits to PVD coatings are the durability, the coating is reliable and less resistant to corrosion. Furthermore, the process generates less residue and uses the materials more efficiently. Q. Can you tell us what, or who, inspired you to open a bathroom showroom?

The Pipescenes showroom

I have worked in the family business for over 34 years and in 2016 we relocated giving my father the opportunity to retire and my husband and I the chance to make the company our own. A showroom for all the fabulous products to be seen and touched was top of our list!

Q. What would you say has been your biggest achievement to date?

That’s easy! It’s got to be relocating and building a brand-new showroom at a time when the industry was experiencing very testing trading times. Not to mention that as we only closed for two days during the moving process, we didn’t let any of our customers down.

Q. We’re starting to hear what trends will influence the industry in 2020, what are your predictions on major trends and how will these affect your business?

I think storage will continue to be the biggest requirement when planning a bathroom so new, innovative furniture will feature heavily in 2020. We are also seeing a slight increase in bath sales, especially at the luxury end of the market so this is certainly something to keep our eyes on.

Q. With Brexit still looming, consumers are being more cautious with spending. How do you drive visitors to your showroom and convert this footfall to sales?

Customers are spending more time shopping around and doing lots of research into their projects, so you have to make sure it’s your showroom and sales team that they remember, for the right reasons, when it comes to purchasing time. It’s no longer about the products, now price and experience are key when converting interest into sales.

LAUNCH OF NEW WHITEPAPER REVEALING IMPACT OF WASHROOM DESIGN ON WELLBEING

A new report commissioned

by Armitage Shanks has revealed that wellbeing is the number one social factor that designers think will impact washroom design over the next five years.

The report, ‘Creating better washrooms’, found that 9 in 10 office washroom designers believe this space can have an impact on end users’ wellbeing – a view that is shared by three quarters of office workers themselves. 64% of office workers surveyed even said that workplace washrooms effect their general job satisfaction.

The findings of the report demonstrate a strong link between commercial washrooms and employee health and wellbeing – an increasingly vital asset for businesses looking to attract and retain the best employees and improve their brand image.

With commercial washroom quality increasingly acknowledged as an important contributor to people’s workplace satisfaction and consumer choice, this research provides timely insights for washroom designers to better adapt their projects from short-term trends to longerterm shifts in user demand.

Washroom week The report was launched at a successful event held at Ideal Standard’s recently opened Clerkenwell showroom in front of media and customers during the company’s

‘Washroom Week’ – a series of insightled events aimed at the architecture and design communities.

The launch event featured an expert panel examining the findings and their implications on the world of washrooms.

The group discussed the conclusions and focused on changes around sustainability, gender, social media and technology within the washroom space.

WHO IS... BERNARD ROBINSON In his first ever interview, Chairman and Founder of MX Group, Bernard Robinson reveals what motivated him to start the company, the best bathroom he’s ever been in, and what trends he predicts for the bathrooms of 2020 and beyond.

Q. You founded MX Group almost 50 years ago, tell us the story of how you entered the bathroom industry.

I started my career working part-time at Dolphin Showers, selling directly to the public. As a recently married man with a mortgage to pay, I was well-motivated, so started spending my weekends buying showers in bulk. Then I’d travel around the country, selling them during the week. My passion for them grew and grew, so I established Marleton Cross Limited (trading as MX Group) in 1974. The rest, as they say, is history.

Q. What do you think has been the company’s biggest success?

In the early days we would sell to the public but we saw an opportunity; we started chasing electricity boards. As a result became the UK’s biggest supplier of electric showers, and more recently Europe’s biggest manufacturer of shower trays, producing 8,000 to 10,000 units each week.

Q. We feel incredibly privileged to be the first to interview you. Is there a particular reason why you’ve never been interviewed before?

And I feel very honoured to be an interviewee for this feature.

There isn’t a particular reason really, in the early days we didn’t need any marketing as we were thriving through our work with the electricity boards – we supplied 85 per cent of the market – but now I’d like to share my story.

Q. What has been your proudest moment at MX Group?

Five years ago, there was a devastating fire which destroyed half of our factory. Thankfully no one was hurt but it took 14 fire engines to put it out. The staff were utterly brilliant; everyone pulled together and we continued to fulfil orders and within four days we had a new production line. I’m so proud of our team and have been very fortunate.

Q. How has the bathroom industry changed in your eyes over the last half a century?

A lot more products are now manufactured in the Far East and China, and the market is more price motivated due to the growth of global multinationals. Safety standards have improved but we still don’t check all inputs, which I’d like to see change. The economy of water is also more important than ever.

Q. What bathroom trends do you think will make headlines in 2020?

We’ll see a variety of finishes – not just plain white, as well as surfaces such as soft-touch, slate appeal and glitter. The environmental impact will become even more important, not just in products but in packaging, and tech will be a big influence. I definitely think we’ll start to see more innovative and ‘smarter’ features in bathrooms.

Q. What’s in the pipeline for MX Group?

We’re looking to change our packaging to be more

environmentally friendly and sustainable by being 100 percent recyclable. We’re also making investments in tech to improve manufacturing and operating systems, and we’re introducing new styles and types of trays, great finishes and range of accessories. So there’s a lot going on!

Q. You’ll soon be celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary, do you have any plans to commemorate this milestone?

Well I will also be celebrating my 50th wedding anniversary in April so I’m looking forward to marking this important milestone with my wife. Special (secret) plans are in progress for the firm’s birthday, which will be commemorated with our 200 members of staff.

Q. If you could change one thing about the bathroom world, what would it be?

I would like to see the playing fields levelled off. For those who import products from other countries, all products should meet the standards of the UK to make it fair to those who manufacture in this country.

Q. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

My brother was a senior police officer in the Birmingham City Police and my Dad once said to me when I was a child that he’d either put me in the nick or I’d be an entrepreneurial success.

Q. If you could invite anyone for dinner, dead or alive, who would it be?

It would have to be my Dad. I would love to see him again to show him I didn’t end up in the nick!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have decided to step back as senior members of the Royal Family. Harry and Meghan will become financially independent and will live across two different continents…… more controversy for the Country, from Brexit to Megxit!

Q. How do you unwind outside of work?

I avoid garden centres, drink red wine, and I’m passionate about International Rugby (supporting England of course) so love watching a game.

Q. What’s your business motto?

Life is complicated, and I like to be fair and practical, so it’s ‘keep it simple, keep it stupid’. My old boss, Jack also told me to ‘be fair to all parties’ and this has helped me throughout my career.

Q. Where is the best bathroom you’ve ever been in?

I’ve been to many beautiful places around the world, and stayed in some luxury hotels and on ships, but you know what?

The best and most comfortable bathroom is my own.
