Living the Good Life in Brunswick Forest, NC, with the Goodmans!

by Kim Henry

When Alan and Debra Goodman were considering their next chapter, they had a very clear list of prerequisites that needed to be met. Having dealt with the harsh winters of New York City for many years, their top priority was a warmer year-round climate, and that’s exactly what Brunswick Forest, situated near the coastal town of Wilmington, NC, has to offer.

golf, and even the occasional kayak trip. With long hot summers and generally mild winters, this part of North Carolina is ideal for enjoying an active lifestyle in all four seasons.

Brunswick Forest has every amenity to make this dream a reality, including a fitness center, a stunning swimming pool, bike trails, water access, and a championship golf course. Designed by the golf guru Tim Cate, who has more than 23 years of experience in building golf courses, Cape Fear National is an 18-hole, award-winning course in a setting of unsurpassed natural beauty and was a significant part of why the Goodmans chose Brunswick Forest.

“Now we can do all sorts of outdoor activities all winter long,” exclaims Alan, referring to his love of low-impact outdoor hobbies such as walking, swimming,

The New York couple had been visiting the area for over a decade. Once COVID-19 hit in 2020, they were able to work remotely and suddenly had the opportunity to test run living in the area full time. It didn’t take long for them to realize there was no going back—their love for the place was confirmed. “It’s been fun to move to a new part of the community,” says Alan, “everyone wants to make friends, and there’s just a great atmosphere.” They built their forever home, complete with a formal dining room for hosting events, which they love to do, and stellar outdoor living spaces such as a hot tub for everyone to enjoy.

With the marked difference in property taxes and prices compared to up North, the Goodmans have enjoyed upsizing and creating plenty of space for them to entertain friends and for their family to visit. The location is on point, with a choice of pristine beaches nearby and the vibrant city of Wilmington less than 10 minutes away.

“Wilmington is a cosmopolitan place, which is important to us. There are great high-end restaurants and an impressive theatre scene. We’re taking advantage of the growth around here. It’s even interesting enough for our kids to want to come and stay, which is a bonus for us,” laughs Alan.

The Goodman’s search began at an Ideal-LIVING Real Estate Show held in New York for people interested in moving down South. “We were in the early stages of figuring out where we wanted to go, and it really helped us focus and find our dream place,” says Debra. Her advice for those just beginning their search? “Do your homework, and take time to check out different communities. You’ve just got to find what’s right for you.”
