I want to personally extend my thanks to each and every one of you for your part in helping Idaho and the rest of the country make history during the most recent epic Powerball jackpot run in mid-January.

This particular Powerball jackpot run really emphasized the fun and excitement this game has to offer. It became a social event for everyone as people bought tickets and discussed what they would do if they won. We say that every play pays and in this case it did. Our players got to imagine what they’d do if they won, we had thousands of winning experiences across Idaho and our biggest winners from latest big Powerball jackpot run were our beneficiaries, Public Education and the State of Idaho’s Permanent Building Fund.

We often say that we could not achieve our goals without the skill, service, and dedication we find with all of our brick and mortar establishments who sell our products, but during the run-up to the $1.5 billion jackpot, this was never more evident. And while it was “business as usual,” perhaps to the extreme, from the Lottery side of the business everything went very smoothly and successfully. Thank you for your commitment to helping our business and in turn, we sincerely hope the run was positive and profitable for you.

On a final congratulatory note, Idaho did achieve one distinction among all the other Lottery jurisdictions that offer Powerball. Idaho was number two, out of forty-seven that sell the game, for total dollars in future sales. This is not a percentage or per capita figure, it is in total dollars spent on multi-draw tickets.

Idaho ranked second behind only Massachusetts.

Back-to-Back-to-Back Winners for Best Stop

Located a stone’s throw from the Idaho-Utah border in a field of sage brush sits the newcomer to Franklin County’s retailer landscape. Not even two years old, Best Stop Tesoro is quickly gaining notoriety and attention as a Lottery retailer, and after the most recent Powerball jackpot run, is also developing a reputation for selling big winning tickets.

Within a week’s time at the end of the big run in January, Best Stop had sold three big winning tickets: a $50,000 on Powerball, a $250,000 on Super Jumbo Bucks Scratch Game™, and an $11,550 winner on the InstaPlay game Shake-a-Day. Veronica Solis was the first winner, claiming a $50,000 Powerball prize (and missing the Powerball jackpot by one number) on January 14, 2016.

The second winner, Tyson Riley from the Salt Lake Valley, happened to be in the right place at exactly the right time a week later. After traveling from Salt Lake City to Logan for a work meeting, he decided to make a quick detour to the town of Franklin, Idaho to pick up some Scratch tickets and Powerball tickets before heading home. His detour, however, turned into a day long journey that had him traveling to Boise before making the return drive back to Utah.

During his stop at Best Stop, the Tesoro in Franklin, Idaho he purchased and played a Super Jumbo Bucks Scratch Game and after seeing that his last number matched a winning number, he couldn’t believe his eyes.

“I saw it matched, so I scratched the prize amount. I’d already bought about $100 worth of tickets and I saw $250 on the prize, so I thought I was up $150,” explained Riley on his winning experience. “Then I saw the comma, and the three zeroes after the $250. It was $250,000. I didn’t think it was right. It happens, but it doesn’t ever happen to you, right? I handed it to the clerk who scanned it and told me to sign it and that I need to go to Boise to claim it.”

Riley ventured north into Idaho and five hours later found his way to the Idaho Lottery’s offices in Boise to claim his prize.

“I still don’t believe it’s real, that I’m here,” added Riley.

Riley said he and his wife planned to pay off debt and invest the remainder into a new home they are purchasing with the winnings.

The final winner to visit Boise after being at Best Stop, was Preston, Idaho resident Thomas Smith who stopped in the Tesoro on his way home from work and bought a Shake-a-Day InstaPlay ticket and won $11,550 right there on the spot.

“The store said it had been really lucky lately,” said Smith. “I’m glad I was part of that!”

Idaho’s Beneficiaries Win from Historic Powerball Jackpot Run Throughout the course of the big Powerball jackpot run, that began back with the draw on November 7, 2015, Idaho Lottery retailers, players, and beneficiaries were winners all the way around.

All totaled, during the entire run Idaho had eight tickets match four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. From the final two big draws alone, Idaho had over 246,000 winning tickets worth over $1.5 million in prizes.

During the most recent jackpot run, Powerball alone generated $8,000,000 in dividend benefits for Idaho’s public education and the State’s Permanent Building Fund. In addition, retailers statewide earned over $1 million in commissions for their hard efforts during the jackpot run as players lined up to buy their chance at winning history.

Power Pack is getting luckier and packing a whole lot of extra punch in the New Year! Starting January 31, 2016, the Idaho Lottery will be adding Lucky for Life to the Power Pack lineup. Lucky for Life is the Draw Game where players could win $1,000 a day, every day, for the rest of their lives!

To make way for this game change, Wild Card will no longer be offered as part of the package price.

The new Power Pack is now $11 and will include a $3 Powerball with PowerPlay, a $2 Mega Millions with Megaplier, a $2 Hot Lotto with Sizzler, a $2 Weekly Grand ticket and a $2 Lucky for Life ticket. That’s a lot of power and a lot of luck all rolled into one single buying option for your players.
