PROOF IS IN THE PICTURE
Nampa Man Claims $414,015 as Last 5 Star Draw Winner
Drye, Nampa, that he had won the 5 Star Draw jackpot. Not his wife, not his mother. Sean barely believed it himself. After only playing the game for a few months, he scanned his ticket with the Idaho Lottery’s mobile app in early March and was shocked at what it said. “Claim at Lottery.”
Excited, he told his wife he’d won a big prize. She replied, “No way!” He got a similar reaction from his mother. No one believed him.
When Sean claimed his jackpot winning prize at the lottery, he asked for photos with his oversized souvenir check to prove he had, indeed, won the big jackpot.
The proof is in the picture. Sean is the last big winner on the game 5 Star Draw as the Lottery plans to retire the game in early April.
He plans to invest his winnings and set aside savings for his young daughter’s future.
Sean purchased his winning ticket from Jacksons #181 in Nampa.
Dear Retailers,
The legislative season is working its way toward Sine Die, its traditional spring-time end. There is one measure we have been working on for the benefit of our retailers. We have proposed a rule change that provides retailers with the flexibility to pay winning prizes over $100 and up to $599 with a pre-paid, no fee gift card. This measure will provide continuation of service while also providing added security to convenience store employees. This measure passed the Senate in February. In March, we had a successful hearing before the House State Affairs Committee for approval in that chamber. On March 24, House Resolution 17 was passed in the House of Representatives to formalize the rule.
I had the opportunity to attend my first ever Scratch for Schools event in Nampa in early March. It was the kick-off event for the year, with 108 participating schools. It was the largest event ever held in Nampa, and fourth largest event in the history of Scratch for Schools. In a time where players do not get excited about a jackpot until it reaches three-quarters of a billion dollars, to witness firsthand 300 teachers become excited about winning $300 and what it means for their students and their classroom, is very eye-opening. It further affirms our mission is meaningful and successful for schools.
And finally, as April arrives, so do changes for Mega Millions. The new game features will provide an opportunity to educate players on the unique multiplier feature and larger prizes that come with the changes. There will certainly be an adjustment period, but keep in mind: the changes are occurring everywhere Mega Millions is sold in America, not just Idaho. Happy Selling!
FAMILY THAT PLAYS TOGETHER, STAYS TOGETHER
The family that plays scratch games together stays together. To this point, George Slane, his wife Jacque, and their daughter Shannon have a recurring lunch date every day in Caldwell. They buy lottery tickets at the Jacksons Extra Mile on Freeport after lunch and play together. In fact, George has been playing the lottery since the very first week lottery tickets went on sale 35 years ago. His wife, Jacque, still has tickets from almost every game they’ve played over the years.
One day in late February, George and Jacque couldn’t believe their eyes when they scratched an Idaho Lottery Slimy Slingo ticket, and revealed they won $30,000. The

couple said they checked it at least 8 times to be sure.
George, a retired building inspector of 32 years says the winning money is already spent: Jacque needs a new clothes dryer.
Riley Maxwell from Buhl only plays the Lottery a few times a year, and does not spend more than about $100 during the year on games.
“I play when I feel like it, like if I feel lucky,” he described on his occasional purchases.
Riley became very chipper when he realized his $10 win on a Diamond Light ticket had increased 10,000 times over. Riley said he used his $10 winnings from

and was in disbelief that he kept revealing more zeroes. He scanned the ticket with the Lottery’s mobile app and discovered that his win was the real thing as it instructed him to sign the ticket and claim it at the Lottery Office.
“It just has a couple of more zeroes,” Riley kept reiterating in disbelief on his big win.
He says he plans to meet with a financial advisor and visit his sister who lives in Hawaii.
His winning ticket was purchased at Big Smoke in Twin Falls.

MUSIC IN GENESEE
Tucked neatly in the undulating swells of the Palouse in north-central Idaho among the sprawling fields and pine trees is the rural town of Genesee. The town lies just off US 95 between Moscow and Lewiston, away from the bustle of the main road, it’s a tight knit community and home to the Genesee School and the mighty Bulldogs.
Like the town itself, hidden away in the school is a thriving music program for pre-K through grade 12 school. On a cold, wet spring morning, the Idaho Lottery made a special Classroom Wishlist visit to Mrs. Smith, the music and band teacher for the school. To encourage the development of the school’s musical program, she asked for and was awarded 24 new pBuzz wind teaching instruments and five new trumpets.
The Lottery team was treated to a musical performance by the middle school band, with about 30 performers in all. They were outstanding! What a surprise to see that music, and music done well, was the very heart of the school and bustling community. For a school of 360 students, more than 10% were participating in the middle school band alone. Remarkable! Taking a series of backroads from Genese through Moscow to the mountains and
For some Idaho Lottery players, winning isn’t only about the prize, it’s the experience that comes with it. Such was the case for Robert Phillips, Sandpoint, who played, won, and claimed the jackpot prize of $120,800 on the Idaho-only game, Idaho Cash in mid-February.
On a stormy, rainy Monday morning, Robert arrived at the Lottery Offices after a long, soggy journey from Sandpoint to Boise. A regular player who purchases one ticket for most draw games, Robert admitted that he had won before playing Idaho Cash, but usually only $12. Of course, this prize-winning ticket also had a “12” in it, with a few more zeroes behind it.
meadows to the east, the Lottery team visited Bovill Elementary School for another Classroom Wishlist delivery. This visit was to Miss Summerfield’s second grade classroom. The small rural school has about 60 students, but her second grade classroom had a quarter of them with 15 students.
The Lottery team told the students they were from Boise. The curious students asked many questions about the big city and even offered a list of things you might find in the city like “a park,” “traffic lights,” “a zoo,” “a store,” and “big schools”.
The delivery included everything Dr. Seuss, from a complete collection of Seuss books to reading games, and Seuss-themed stuffed characters like The
Cat in the Hat. After a short story-time reading to the second graders, much like The Cat in the Hat, when the story was done, it was time to put away books, games, and characters as the students had other subjects to study. These second-grade students, as part of “Read Across America Week” were each challenged by Miss Summerfield to read every single Dr. Seuss book she received by the end of the school year. Two students have already succeeded in doing so.
There are many surprises you’ll find in Idaho if you take the back roads, but you’ll never know what they are unless you venture off the main highway. And for two small towns, they were worth the extra miles.
Easygoing and humble, Robert embraced his celebrity status by taking his picture with his souvenir check along with a couple of selfies, even though he still seemed reluctant to believe that he’d won.
“I’m still trying to believe this is real,” he
exclaimed. “This doesn’t just happen to people.”
Robert had no immediate plans for his prize winnings but was at least looking forward to the rain letting up on his drive home so he could enjoy the scenery.
The Idaho Cash winning ticket was sold at Yoke’s in Ponderay.
