DOING GOOD, IDAHO
Nestled snuggly against golden Tamarack and deep green pines on a hillside overlooking the St. Joe River, about 25 miles east of St. Maries, the three-room schoolhouse of Calder Elementary is a beacon for its community that serves 19 students and three teachers. Inside, just off the secondary school classroom in the basement is a renovated closet that serves as the school’s small library.
“Learning begins with reading. It is where young students can let their imaginations run free,” said Megan Sindt, the school’s administrator when she received a Bucks for Books award from the Idaho Lottery.
The Idaho Lottery was created specifically to make a difference for Calder Elementary, and all of Idaho’s public schools, and for the Idahoans who prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s success.
Calder School Bucks for Books Recipient $1,000 Award

In 2024 the Idaho Lottery celebrated its 35th Anniversary returning a record dividend of $84 million to the People of Idaho on July 19, 2024, during a public ceremony with Governor Brad Little at The Village in Meridian. Since 1989, the Idaho Lottery has returned $1.273 BILLION to benefit our good causes: public education and the State of Idaho’s permanent building facilities, like our public universities and college campuses.
DIVIDEND DISTRIBUTION
During the 2024 legislative session, the Idaho Legislature passed Governor Little’s plan for school investment and property tax relief for Idaho’s citizens that emphasizes fiscal responsibility and a long-term vision that ensures lottery proceeds optimally benefit Idaho’s schools, students, and property taxpayers.
Therefore, effective FY 2025, there will be changes in priorities in how dividend monies may be spent by schools. However, there will be no changes to the formulas. The Department of Education will continue to receive 5/8 of the Lottery dividend annually, and the Permanent Building Fund will continue to receive 3/8 of the Lottery dividend for state-owned facilities.
The legislation enacted a hierarchy for Idaho public school districts to use the funding in the following order of priority:
1. Reduce the levy for voter-approved school bonds.
2. Reduce the levy for voter-approved temporary supplemental school levies.
3. Reduce the levy for voter-approved school plant facility levies.
4. Any remaining funds may be used for construction, renovation, or maintenance needs, used to secure/ make payments on a new school facilities bond, or may be reserved for future school facility construction or renovation needs.
The Idaho Lottery continued its trademark performance of rigorously managing their budget. Here is a breakdown of Where the Money Goes:
DO GOOD PROGRAMS
When the Idaho Lottery was voted into existence by Idahoans in 1988, it was done with the intent of providing supplemental funding to enhance public education and the State of Idaho’s permanently owned facilities. Thirty-five years later and after pumping more than a billion dollars in additional funding for Idahoans this mission remains at the core of the Lottery’s everyday operations.
The Idaho Lottery offers four Do Good initiatives beyond the annual dividend: Love Your School, Bucks for Books, Classroom Wishlist, and Scratch for Schools. These participatory ventures provide specific resources for classroom needs and libraries. The combination of these four programs reached 579 public schools with a total of $394,319 awarded for individual classroom and library needs.
Scratch for Schools had some swashbuckling fun with ten events; hosting 459 schools who won over $160,000.
The competition was fierce, producing some of the most competitive scratching in Scratch for Schools history. At each event, schools received 200 unscratched tickets, an entire pack of Blackboard’s Loot, a pirate themed ticket created specifically for Scratch for Schools.
Now in its 23rd year, the original and longest running Do Good initiative has held 185 events and awarded more than $1.8 million for specific classroom and school needs since October 2001.

Priest River Lamannah High won $267 for their school.
TThe Idaho Lottery jump-started Anne Gigray-Kinley’s Food and Finance classroom at Middleton Middle School with Classroom Wishlist items of new cooking equipment, cake pans, new knife sets, air fryers, and four brand-new stoves.
In FY 2024, Classroom Wishlist enjoyed its best year, awarding a total of 91 school projects worth $173,856. Since the program began, there have been an amazing 274 school projects funded worth $439,199.

A thousand dollars can make a big difference for any Idaho school. And, in Idaho, we stretch our dollars further. That’s why during FY 2024 the Idaho Lottery created the Love Your School program where players get to be the hero for a school!
Using the Lottery’s VIP Club, players use their points to get an entry into a drawing. At the end of each month, the Lottery selects one player and that player gets to give a $1,000 award to the school they LOVE the most.
For a list of recipients and our VIP Club heroes, visit www.idaholottery.com/giving-back/love-your-school

For the fifth year, the Idaho Lottery teamed up with the Idaho Commission for Libraries to deliver this year’s Bucks for Books awards. At every school, the experience is often the same. Young students become excited to see new books and oftentimes new books they’ve requested from their librarian. Bucks for Books is making a difference for early education literacy in Idaho.
There were 20 recipients for a total of $50,000 this year. Since 2019, Bucks for Books has awarded 109 schools with a total of $275,000 for new book acquisition.
