Doing Good, Idaho
During a “Back-to-School” Classroom Wishlist visit on a September afternoon in Rexburg, Hibbard Elementary School 3rd Grade teacher Remi Burton exemplified the Idaho Lottery’s Do Good programs when she said, “When I was a third grader, my grandma told me, ‘If you read you succeed, if you don’t, you won’t.’ I want to foster that lifelong love of reading in these eight and nine-yearold students. This wishlist award makes a difference.” The Idaho Lottery was created specifically to benefit Idaho schools as they prepare their students for future success. Every day for 34 years the Idaho Lottery has made a difference for Idaho’s public schools and buildings. At the conclusion of Fiscal Year 2023, the Idaho Lottery returned a record-setting annual dividend of $82 million to the People of Idaho. Since 1989, the Idaho Lottery has returned $1.189 billion to benefit our good causes: public education and the State of Idaho’s permanent building facilities, like our public university and college campuses. The Idaho Lottery continued its trademark performance of rigorously managing their budget. Here is a breakdown of Where the Money Goes: Prizes 68%

DO GOOD PROGRAMS
When the Idaho Lottery was first created, it had a singular mission: to Do Good by providing the largest annual dividend possible to the State for the benefit of public education and the State’s permanent buildings. Today, in addition to the annual dividend, the Lottery also offers Scratch for Schools, Classroom Wishlist, and Bucks for Books. These participatory ventures provide specific resources to classrooms and libraries. The combination of Scratch for Schools, Classroom Wishlist, and Bucks for Books reached 540 public schools with a total of $326,000 awarded for individual classroom and program needs.
The Idaho Lottery’s long-standing fundraiser Scratch for Schools completed one of its most successful series in program history. A total of 441 public schools participated in one of ten events. The participants won more than in any other year as the program returned a record $152,680 to schools for individual classroom needs. The events in Nampa, McCall, Salmon, Pocatello, and Twin Falls all had record numbers of schools participating this year. In all, more than 1,300 school members from all corners of Idaho joined the Lottery for the fun and exciting atmosphere that characterized these events.
Lakes Middle School in Coeur d’Alene won $265 for their school.
The Idaho Lottery’s Classroom Wishlist program was an overwhelming success during the school year. Started in 2019, this program awards $10,000 every month for a variety of projects to improve classroom and learning environments. This program allows teachers to submit specific request for needed projects each month. Wishlists are voted on and then the Lottery’s VIP Club members donate points to help fund the projects. From incubators and baby chickens to rocketry and robots, Classroom Wishlist canvassed the Gem State helping 80 school projects with a total of $123,407 during the fiscal year. Here are the

On a beautiful spring-like morning, the Lottery made the special delivery to Ririe Elementary and Mrs. Weight’s 1st grade classroom. We were greeted with excitement and enthusiasm from the students when they saw the boxes. Mrs. Weight’s plan was to introduce the subject before Spring Break. When the students returned from Spring Break, the eggs would be incubating and ready to hatch in just a couple of weeks. The children were thrilled when the baby chicks were grown enough to run around the classroom. This was one lesson the children will never forget. This past year, the Idaho Lottery’s Bucks for Books program worked with the Idaho Commission for Libraries to provide 19 awards for a total of $50,000 to schools from Priest Lake to Ammon. did you know? The Idaho Lottery launched on July 19, 1989. Three-eighths of the Idaho Lottery’s annual dividend goes to the Department of Education for maintenance and operations. Another threeeighths of the dividend goes to the Department of Administration’s Permanent Building Fund for upgrades and improvements to projects. The final one-fourth of the Lottery’s dividend goes to the Department of Education’s Bond Levy Equalization Fund that helps pay the interest on qualifying, voter-approved school bonds. Dividend distribution occurs annually in July. The Department of Education handles distribution at the district and charter school level based on average daily attendance. Permanent Building Fund projects are approved by the Permanent Building Fund Advisory Committee and the Idaho Legislature.
The Idaho Lottery office is open from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM MT, Monday through Friday, and closed all state and federal holidays. For more information, please contact: Idaho Lottery P.O. BOX 6537 Boise, ID 83707 208-334-2600
