i Abstract

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of parents in the aftermath of the Highland Park parade shooting in 2022, and the specific actions they took to help their children cope. Few studies have examined how parents navigated their own distress while supporting the emotional well-being of their children. To answer these questions, eight parents who attended the Highland Park 4th of July parade with their children were interviewed in depth, via Zoom, on two separate occasions. The main findings that describe the lived experience of participants and their subsequent parenting strategies were: living in a world that no longer felt safe; parenting while carrying invisible wounds; actively rebuilding safety for one’s children; finding meaning in survival; and healing as a relational and collective process. Because the children experienced different degrees of posttraumatic stress at different phases of recovery, the importance of attuned and sensitive timing of support was emphasized, including parenting strategies for supporting their children’s posttraumatic recovery. Keywords: mass shootings; parenting; children; family environment; recovery from trauma
