ISHANGO STEM Summer Camp 2022
This one-week summer camp will use the unique archaeological discoveries at the African U.N. World Heritage site of Ishango to explore the origin of mathematical thought and applications to modern science. Age-appropriate for Middle/High School. Day 1. Origins of Math Activity: Deciphering the 20,000-year-old Ishango Prime Number Sieve and African Sexagesimal Finger Calculation Day 2. Exploring the Microcosmos - Microscopy of Your Body and Nature Activity: Foldscope Microscopy of Human Blood and Microfauna of City Park Day 3. Exploring the Macrocosmos - Geography and Natural History Activity: iNaturalist Field Bioblitz Day 4. Anatomy, Anthropology, and Health Activity: PCR Lab Testing for Sickle Cell and Mock COVID Test Day 5. The Big Picture - Understanding Human Populations and Evolution Activity: Casts of 3 Million Years of Human Ancestors
