Saranac, MI passed away Sunday, March 1, 2020. She was born in Grand Rapids, MI the daughter of Aubrey and Marguerite (White) Parker. Lois married John Frederiksen in 1950, he passed away in 1985. She was a lifetime member of Saranac American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and a past den mother for Cub Scouts. Lois loved to travel with her friends. Surviving are her children Dawn (Dennis) Sitzer of Saranac and Randy (Mary) Frederiksen of Saranac. Grandchildren Michelle (Jason) Morningstar of South Carolina, Darren Gravelin of North Carolina, Shanna Frederiksen of Kentwood, Tim (Lisa) Sitzer of Lowell, Angie Sitzer and Ken Ruid of Saranac, Tyler Frederiksen of Saranac, Joshua Frederiksen and Stephanie Snyder of Alto and Alicia (Cody) Shepard of Belding. 11 Great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, daughter Sandra Gravelin, brother Jerry Parker, sisters Vonnie Parker and Fayrene Shaler and special friend James Overbeck. Funeral services for Lois were held at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac on Friday, March 6, 2020 11:00 AM with Pastor Becky Poor officiating. Interment Saranac Cemetery. IONIA COUNTY YOUTH BAKE OFF
Michigan youth will have the opportunity to participate in a Youth Bake-off contest on April 18TH in Ionia Michigan. The competition is open to all youth, including non 4-H members; aged 5 to 19 year olds, the only requirement is that they love to cook. Food entries must be prepared and baked exclusively by the youth. Youth should be supervised by an adult for safety reasons while preparing and baking their entry. The item is then brought into the Ionia MSU Extension office between 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the 18TH of April, where local judges will review the baked item on taste, presentation of item and creativity among the age groups. Youth should be prepared to talk to the judge and have a written copy of the recipe with them. The 2020 Youth Categories will be: •5-7 year olds – Easy Baking, 6 cookies •8-11 year olds – Quick breads, 6 muffins or 6 baked cookies •12-14 year olds – Yeast products (rolls, bread, etc.), frosted cake, pastry pie •15-19 year olds – Baked fancy dessert, fancy pastry, tarts, tortes, or cheesecakes •9 – 19 year olds – Ethnic or International dish A winner of each category from ages 8-19 years of age will receive a $20.00 pre-paid gift card and an award certificate. Rep. Calley: New proposal would dedicate $800M more to local road repairs without raising taxes Bills devote all taxes paid at the pump to county, city and village roads
State Rep. Julie Calley today voiced her support for a common-sense reform that would help fix crumbling local roads and bridges without a tax increase. The proposal, included in House Bills 5582-85 and 5587-88, would eliminate the sales tax on fuel and replace it with an equivalent, revenue-neutral tax on fuel dedicated solely to roads. This would dedicate roughly $800 million more per year to road repairs without raising taxes. The legislation also includes strict protections to ensure schools are not hurt from the
change. “The taxes we pay at the pump should go to fix the roads – it’s plain and simple,” said Calley, of Portland. “The legislation makes this common-sense reform while also giving our local road agencies the boost they need to fix the roads we drive every day on our way to work, school and the grocery store.” Under the legislation, Calley said all revenue collected by the replacement tax at the pump would be dedicated specifically to local road funding – filling a gap left behind in the governor’s

people who have been proven innocent for the time they spent wrongfully imprisoned. It intended to give anyone who had been wrongfully imprisoned 18 months to file a claim. At least 11 claims were later dismissed by the Court of Claims when the court said another section of state law limited the filing deadline to six months. “No one who has served time in prison for a crime they didn’t commit should be denied the damages they are due because of a technicality,” Calley said. “Now, people who were wrongfully convicted and imprisoned in Michigan will be able to seek compensation, so they can get back on their feet and pursue a brighter tomorrow.” The bipartisan plan – which Calley sponsored alongside Rep. Kyra Bolden (D-Southfield) and Sen. Paul Wojno (D-Warren) – will give people who were exonerated of a crime before the Wrongful Imprisonment Act went into effect on March 29, 2017, an additional 18 months to file a claim. All three measures received unanimous support in both the House and Senate.
