– OBITUARIES –
† COOK Mary Cook passed away peacefully February 19, 2022, at the age of 85 years. She was born September 30, 1936,
in Freemont, Michigan, to Lowell and Dorothy Fisher. They named her Mary Antoinette Fisher, but the family always called her Toni. After graduating from high school as the salutatorian of her class, she married Donald Cook on May 13, 1955, and they settled in Ionia, Michigan. For the next ten years she spent her days seeing to the many and varied needs of their five children. To help her growing family make ends meet she began what today would be called a daycare center in her home. Taking care of children became her calling, one which she would answer for the next forty years. In time, the daycare center became a foster home and eventually a group home for emotionally and physically challenged children. Over the years, Mary provided shelter and care for over 350 children. Many of them were with her for years, and a few, whom she felt would have nowhere else to go, she adopted as her own. After retirement, Mary enjoyed watching her own family grow and scatter to make their own way in the world. She loved to play cards with friends and was active in her local church’s activities. When her health began to fail, she moved, with her daughter Linda, and son Matthew, to the home of her son Thomas and his wife Jean, in Illinois, where she enjoyed peaceful days reading entire books without interruption. Mary, who was called Toni by her siblings, and Ma by hundreds of others, is survived by her children Thomas (Jean) and Linda of Cary, IL, Michael (Melissa), Timothy (Theresa), and Matthew of Ionia, MI., and Douglas (Sally) of Frankfort, MI., 21 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Russell and Roger, and her devoted sister, Sheri. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy, and her sister, Karen. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is being planned for the spring.
† HUHN Ronald Huhn passed away February 5, 2022 after a short illness. He was born in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Harold and Irene (Schrauben) Huhn. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Portland. He worked at GM for 33 1/2 years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, especially deer hunting. He was preceded in death by daughter Sharon Lynn Huhn Rinard. He is survived by wife Dawn, of almost 59 years, son Steven, granddaughters Elaina Huhn, Jennifer Johnson & Jessica Rinard also great-grandson Ezra Johnson. At his request, he has been cremated and there were no services. † STAPOR Mr. Thomas Stapor,age 59, of Hastings, MI, passed away Saturday, February 19th, at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, in Grand Rapids, MI. Tom was born in Lansing, MI on March 10, 1962, a son of Charlotte (Lukins) and John Stapor. He was raised in the Grand Ledge area and attended local schools graduating from Grand Ledge High School. Tom attended Ferris State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in Automotive Technology. Tom loved automobiles, and for many years owned and operated The Village AutoSmith, in Charlotte, MI. After closing the shop, he began working with Bosch & Mitchell selling and implementing Automotive Repair Software for repair shops all over Michigan. He later joined NAPA Auto Tech as an Automotive Tech Trainer. This new position was a wonderful fit for Tom as he truly loved interacting with people. His new position offered him the opportunity to travel all over the United States training a wide range of auto mechanics on the latest technological tools related to automotive repair. During 2020 Tom was promoted to a Management position overseeing multiple
regions in the United States. In 2009 Tom met the love of his life Darlene (Patterson) Stapor. After many attempts to convince Darlene to go on a first date, it was his invitation to join him for a fish fry of fresh caught Blue Gill which his dad had caught at his home on Middle Lake, in Hastings, MI. Tom & Darlene were married on New Years Day, January 1, 2014 under the Mackinaw Bridge. The couple began their lives together in the St. Johns area, but In 2018 purchased Tom’s parents home on Middle Lake in Hastings where they established their permanent residence. Tom & Darlene loved boating, and early in their marriage enjoyed taking the speed boat to several different local lakes for a day on the water. It didn’t take long for Middle Lake to become a magical place where the entire family would spend time on the pontoon, cooking out and making lifelong memories. Tom’s favorite time of day was sunset, and no matter where he was, or what he was doing, he always took time to sit quietly and watch the day end. Tom & Darlene were the best of friends and did everything together. Never ones to sit still very long, they loved being on the go and traveling. They loved taking their Side by Side ATV into Northern Michigan to spend time exploring favorite destinations such as Drummond Island, Silver Lake sand dunes, and the beautiful Upper Peninsula. Their favorite trip, however, was a jeep excursion which led them to complete the circle loop around the entire Lake Superior. Time spent together traveling was not limited to Michigan however, the couple has also visited several Bahamas Islands, Canada, and most recently spent their 2019 anniversary in Hawaii. Thomas is survived by his beloved wife Darlene, his daughter Samantha (Michael) Robbe, two sons Shane (Kayce) Nelson, Jacob (Ashleigh) Nelson, his parents John (Charlotte) Stapor, his brother, Christian (Leann) Stapor, 4 grandchildren, Baylee, Bodey, Jase, & Zoey Nelson, Niece Olivia (Neil) Criteser, nephews Brandon (Alisha) Stapor, Jared (Cady) Stapor, great nephew Owen Stapor, & great niece Violet Stapor. A celebration of Tom’s life with food and refreshments provided will be held from 1 PM to 3 PM on Saturday, March 5th at Welcome Corners United Methodist Church in Hastings, MI. † STAUFFER K. Ernestine Stauffer age 100 of Belding passed away March 1, 2022. She
was born February 2, 1922 in Vergennes Twp. the daughter of Ernst and Katherine (Roth) Althaus. Ernestine went on to marry Lloyd G. Stauffer May 2, 1941, together they raised 3 children and she helped Lloyd run the family farm. He preceded her in death May 16, 2008. She was a member of Easton United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Ernestine was a very accomplished painter, she loved to sew, write poetry and short storys. Surviving are her children; Larry (Nancy) Stauffer of Belding and Linda Renucci of Ionia. Boston-Saranac Historical Society A VERY LARGE CARDBOARD BOX left sitting out in the rain – for years! All spongy and soggy and critter infested. With that image in mind, let’s continue the story of how a train station was turned into a museum. Since the early 1970’s, the Saranac Depot had been left waiting for its move to Grand Rapids. The wait was because the bridge over the Grand River (which collapsed in 1969) was only partially open until all repairs were finally completed in 1977. In the meantime, the Saranac Depot slowly fell into disrepair. The roof was leaking; the windows’ glass cracked or broken out and then boarded over; a tree was even growing up through the floor and out a hole in the roof. The Depot had become a true “Raccoon Palace.” One of the original members to first “visit” the derelict Depot – “visit” meaning entered by means of sneaking in through a broken window – described the common opinion on trying to save the Depot as, “What’re you thinking?!?!” Despite the obstacles, the saving of the Depot became one of the first major preservation efforts of the newly formed (1985) BSHS, and by November 1990 the society was able to purchase the building and begin efforts to repair and restore the structure. Inside, hours were spent hand scouring the wood paneling and floors, to remove the last remnants of graffiti. Many more volunteer hours went into stabilizing the building before its BIG move on July 1, 1994, to its current location on Bridge Street, and its current life as the permanent home of the BSHS and the Saranac Area Museum. After the move, and following more updates and repairs, the consensus was more like, “Why didn’t we think of this sooner?” NOTE: In recognition of the Society and community’s work in restoring the Depot, the “Keep Michigan Beautiful” organization awarded their “Presidents Award” to the BSHS on October 15, 1992. Sparrow Ionia names trio of new members to Board of Directors IONIA, MI – Sparrow Ionia Hospital has named several new members to its Board of Directors, which governs the hospital and works closely with senior leadership. Joining the Sparrow Ionia Board for three-year terms are Virgil Biggs, owner, Biggs, Dickinson, & Roberts Wealth Management Services, LLC, and John Milewski II, director of technology, Ionia County Intermediate School District. Joining for a two-year term is Brett Reich, D.O., Emergency Medicine medical director at Sparrow Eaton and Sparrow Ionia hospitals and Sparrow Ionia Medical Chief of Staff. Biggs’ areas of expertise at his wealth management firm include personal income tax preparation, and financial and investing planning services. He participates in various charitable and civic activities and was chairman of the Sparrow Ionia Replacement Hospital Capital Campaign. He previously served on the hospital’s Board of Directors from 2012-19, and in 2016 became a member of the Sparrow Ionia
Foundation Board of Directors. Biggs and his wife, Connie, have three married children, Ginger, Tammi, and Rachelle. Prior to becoming the Ionia ISD’s technology director, Milewski was Technology Operations Manager for Ionia Public Schools. Milewski is an Ionia city councilman and is involved in several charitable and civic activities. He previously served on the Sparrow Ionia Board of Directors from 2009-19. Milewski lives in Ionia with his wife, Beth, and sons, Will, John, and James. Dr. Reich is board certified and has spent time practicing emergency medicine in Detroit, Lansing, Ionia, and Charlotte. Watercraft registration renewal can be completed online, at self-service stations Customers can quickly and easily renew their watercraft registration online or at one of 160 conveniently located self-service stations statewide. “We continue to make doing business with the Secretary of State as convenient as possible,” said Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. “Watercraft renewals are just one of the many services you can now complete from the comfort of your home, or while you’re shopping at your local grocery store.” Customers renew their watercraft registration online by visiting Michigan.gov/SOS, clicking the link for online services, and choosing from two options for renewing watercraft: • An online express option for quick renewals. • An online authenticated renewal process, which allows customers to access their customer record and conduct other transactions along with their watercraft renewal. They also may print a copy of their renewed
registration. Watercraft registrations are renewed on a three-year cycle and expire on March 31 of the third year. Residents due for a watercraft renewal will be mailed a courtesy reminder in February. Reports to: Township Supervisor and Township Board Employment Status: Part-time (estimated 10-15 hours per week)Compensation: Salary (as determined by Township Board) Position Summary: The Zoning Administrator has overall responsibility to administer the Otisco Township Zoning Ordinance as well as all other applicable Township ordinances as written, without authority to deviate from the respective ordinance. This entry-level position in a local government office allows for individuals to gain experience in zoning laws and township governments. The Zoning Administrator must be available during office hours to answer questions and provide applications for zoning permits, however the office hours can be flexible. This position coordinates heavily with the Assessor on zoning matters such as land divisions and zoning compliance applications. The position also serves as staff liaison to the Township Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Ordinance Administration a. Provide overall administration and enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance via thorough knowledge of the Zoning Ordinance and the appropriate forms. b. Receives and processes applications for zoning permits, special use permits, site plan reviews, variances, administrative appeals, lot line adjustments, and land divisions. c. Determines compliance with the provisions of the Zoning Ordinance and completeness of the respective applications and issues the appropriate land use permit when all provisions of the Ordinance are in compliance while maintaining a complete file of permits issued with supporting documentation. i. Notifies applicant, in writing, if the proposed use is not in compliance with Ordinance standards and assists with an appropriate alternative procedure, appeals, or any other administrative remedies necessary to attain compliance. d. Performs periodic inspections to ensure permits and land use changes comply with the Zoning Ordinance. i. This involves driving around the township to inspect sites for violations and to ensure all projects comply with the Zoning Ordinance. You will be reimbursed for mileage. e. Maintains a variety of logs and records related to inspections and enforcement activities. f. Attends all Township Board, Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings to report on zoning matters and to advise on issues related to zoning administration. g. Testify, as necessary, at public and judicial hearings. 2. Office Administration a. Coordinates with the Assessor on zoning permits. b. Maintains the zoning map, text and office records up-to-date by recording all amendments and coordinates with the Clerk to retain all official documents; and makes copies of the Zoning Ordinance available to the public. c. Submits a written monthly and annual report to the Township Board, Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals which includes: permits issued/denied, appeals, request for amendments, request for variances, and other pertinent ordinance administration information. 3. Public Relations a. Assist the general public with zoning and permit questions and with general customer needs via telephone, email, and in person. b. Ability to work and communicate, both verbally and in writing, with elected and appointed officials and the general public with appropriate etiquette and professionalism. c. Assist the general public, applicants, developers, and their representatives with zoning inquiries, proposals, and applications. Directs individuals to the proper agencies for other needed permits. Qualifications: Successful applicants will meet the following requirements: 1.Education a. Graduated from an accredited high school or obtained GED; college-level education preferred. 2.Experience a. Working knowledge of zoning law or past experience as a zoning administrator preferred, but not required. b. Site plan and blueprint reading skills are helpful, but not required. 3.Skills and Abilities a. Have a deductive, logical system of thought common in reading and interpreting legal documents. b. Rep. Calley votes to cut taxes for all, expand exemptions for Michigan retirees State Rep. Julie Calley today voted to approve an expanded plan to cut taxes for all Michiganders and offer additional relief to families and seniors on fixed incomes. Calley, of Portland, said the revised plan will reduce the state’s income tax rate to 3.9 percent, offer a new $500-per-child tax credit, and provide additional individual and retirement income exemptions for Michigan seniors. “As inflation soars, Michigan families and seniors on fixed incomes are struggling to afford everyday essentials,” Calley said. “People need relief now more than ever before. With a multi-billion-dollar budget surplus, the state is in a great position to cut taxes so people can hang onto more of their hard-earned money.” Details of Senate Bill 768 include: Increasing the income tax exemption for seniors. Currently, residents age 67 and older are eligible to receive a tax exemption for their first $20,000 in total income, or $40,000 for those filing jointly. This plan lowers the age of eligibility to 62 and adds an additional exemption for retirement income. With the two exemptions under the plan, a person 62 or older with retirement income is eligible for $40,000 for single filers or $80,000 for joint filers. Offering Michigan families a $500 child tax credit for each dependent age 18 and younger. Between the income tax
reduction and the new child tax credit, an average family of four in Michigan could receive around $1,150 a year in tax relief under the plan. Reducing the personal income tax rate to 3.9 percent from the current 4.25 percent starting in the 2022 tax year. This would return nearly $1.1 billion to Michigan taxpayers in the first year. The cut follows through on a previous promise to restore the rate to 3.9 percent after it was raised in 2007 during Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s administration. Calley also voted for a measure that sets aside $1.5 billion to reduce debt and improve the finances of public employee retirement systems that taxpayers fund. Most of the one-time funding would go to pension plans for local and county governments and road commissions. To receive funding, a municipality will be required to have best practices in place that allow them to make ongoing contributions, and there is a claw-back provision that kicks in if a community revises its plan. An additional $250 million will be set aside for grants to communities who already have their pensions funded at a certain percentage. This serves as a merit-based model for fiscal responsibility and will allow these communities more flexibility to fund their pensions even better or pay off other debts under certain circumstances.
