Department of State takes action against Ionia County driver education provider

LYONS, Mich.-- The Michigan Department of State (MDOS) has suspended the provider and instructor certificates of an Ionia County driver education provider for alleged violations of the Driver Education Provider and Instructor Act that were discovered during an investigation by MDOS staff following a consumer complaint.

IDRIVE Academy LLC, owned by Brian and Jessica DeShane and located at 8283 Sunset Drive in Lyons, has been summarily suspended, effective February 24. The numerous violations discovered during the investigation include but are not limited to: exceeding the number of students allowed in a classroom by the fire marshal; failing to provide integrated and related classroom and behindthe-wheel instruction; failing to provide at least 24 hours of classroom instruction as required for Segment 1; failing to provide behind-thewheel instruction and hours of

observation as required; and misrepresenting the quantity and quality of instruction provided to students.

MDOS has suspended the instructor certificate of Brian DeShane, and the provider certificate held by Brian and Jessica DeShane, and will be seeking revocation of the certificates.

The Department of State cannot issue certificates of completion to students who have participated in the courses. Consumers may seek remedy by filing a formal criminal complaint, filing a claim against the surety bond held by the provider and/or pursuing civil litigation.

MDOS inspects and investigates driver education providers and instructors to ensure compliance with the Driver Education Provider and Instructor Act. Consumers who have a complaint against IDRIVE Academy LLC, are encouraged to file a complaint online.

…which is Morse Code for “BTW” or for those non-texters, “By the way…” and I thought was a clever way to link a grandfather of technology, the telegraph, through the eras of the telephone, teletype, the fax and on to the Internet, and all that followed.

So, BY THE WAY, how much do you know about the very early days in the development of modern tech, and how it first arrived in Saranac?

In the early 1830s, Samuel F.B. Morse, started tinkering with how an electrical impulse initiated in one place and transmitted over a distance through wires could activate an electromagnet somewhere else. Operators would push down on a button attached to a small brass plate that made an electrical connection between two wires, thus sending electricity through the wires to a metal strip in a second place. This transmission made a clicking sound. A short press of the “key” created a short burst of sound, a “dot,” while holding down the “key” a little longer created a longer click or a “dash.” By 1838, Morse had

formalized this series of dots and dashes into a language which became known as “American Morse Code.” It was immediately apparent that “straight key” (telegraph) operators – “straight key” being the name for the contraption that used up-and-down keys (aka a brass key) - could tap out clear messages across vast distances, where it would be translated back into words on the other end.

In the Spring of 1858, the Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad had arrived in the village of Saranac, and already telegraph technology (using Morse Code) was in use, not only relaying important messages and information but helping to prevent trains that shared main lines from running into each other.

Before the final piece of track was laid connecting the transcontinental railroad (which was in 1869), on October 24, 1861, the first transcontinental telegraph system was completed, making it possible to transmit messages rapidly (by mid-nineteenth-century standards) from coast to
