† FELL

Scott Raymond Fell, age 58 passed suddenly on February 24, 2021.

Scott was born June 27, 1962 in Ionia to Gerald R. Fell and Judith A Fell ( Benedict) VanderVeen.

Scott grew up in Lyons and Ionia. He attended Twin Rivers and Ionia Jr and Sr High School Graduating with the class of 1980.

Scott attended trade school after high school.

Scott was an amazingly talented trumpet player and started in Jr high school. He continued playing through high school, won awards and was first chair his senior year. He passed his love of jazz and band to his children, grandchildren and countless youngsters in Ionia public schools. He was active with the high school jazz band and annual band camps for many years. He inspired many to believe in their talents and was their #1 fan. Scott was also a talented and well known guitar player and also shared his love of thrash metal with many. He was in several bands through out his life time and taught several young people in the community to play. He is best known for his ability to “ shred” on his guitar. He was active in Ionia community band, he was a founding member of Contact Buzz and was most recently in the unknown Band. He made many life long friendships in the music community.

Scott also had a love of U of M sports and was an avid fan of football and basketball. He was also a fan of anyone playing OSU! Scott is also well known for his sarcasm, quick wit and the gift of words. Scott loved cars especially his mustangs. Most of all he loved his family and friends who will miss him dearly.

Scott is survived by his wife Keli Fell of Cedar Springs, Daughter Heather (Ron) Stacey of Portland, son Zachary Fell (Samantha) of Pewamo, daughter Cathrine Fell of Grand Rapids and step son Tyler Woods of Cedar Springs. Grandchildren Hunter, Jenna, Cameron and Jackson Stacey, Memphis Fell, TayLynn Schneider. Mother Judy VanderVeen and step father Bob of Ionia, step mother Sharon Fell of Portland. Brothers Jon VanderVeen ( Deb) of Grand Rapids, Derek VanderVeen. Sister Stacey( Bob) Nurenberg of Woodland.

Many nieces, nephews , cousins and countless in laws and outlaws.

Proceeded in death by his father Gerald, grandparents Jane and Albert Benedict and Don and Rosella Fell. And several very special people in Scott’s life.

Cremation has taken place and the family will hold a celebration of life at Hazel DeVore Park in Lyons on June 26th 2021 from 2pm - 6pm please bring a memory of Scott to share with his children. In Lieu of flowers or donations please consider Ionia Band Boosters in memory of Scott.

† SCHANSKI Linda Schanski age 72 of Portland, MI passed away March 2, 2021. She was born on April 13, 1948 in Ionia the daughter of Joseph and Rose (Cook) Schanski. Linda dearly loved her family and all of her caretakers, who gave her such wonderful care. She was a positive person with a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. Singing, knitting, and shopping were some of her favorite pastimes. Linda loved purses, jewelry and having her hair and nails done. Looking nice was very important to her. She attended SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Portland.

Surviving Linda are her siblings Pete (Saundra) Schanski of Ionia, Rich (Pam) Schanski of Lewiston, Deb (Scott) Pickens of Duck Lake, Sheila Fuller of Ionia and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Private services will be held at a later date. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Several items were discussed with no action taken at this time.

Motion made by W Marcussen and supported by R Alexander to accept payment of the township bills as submitted. Motion passed 5 yes, 0 no.

Portland Creates Dust off your art supplies, because after a pandemic-related year off, Portland Creates is back! Have fun creating an original masterpiece, and have it displayed at the Portland District Library. Artists ages 6 and older can submit artwork of all types--paintings, drawings, sculptures, photos, and more.

Get Creative with Cookies A plethora of cookie-themed television shows has created a surge of interest in royal icing techniques, and now you can learn to pipe, flood, marble, and decorate like a pro. Starting March 25, sign up for a takeand-make bag that contains everything you need to make a batch of royal icing and decorate a dozen cookies. Then follow along with our instructional YouTube video, which will be posted that same day. This program is limited to ten participants, so claim your spot today! Portland District Library's teen book club, Page Turners, is off and running! Our first book is “The Grief Keeper” by Alexandra Villasante. Virtual Storytimes Spring Storytime fun is in full bloom at the library starting Monday, March 8 so don’t wait to register your Busy Bee and Book Cub. New sensory items and Take-and-Make bags will be available starting March 8 and the new videos will premiere on March 15 for you and your little one to follow along with.

Our friends at the Ionia County Great Start Collaborative will be partnering with us again to explore all sorts of topics includ-

STEM Club In March, Virtual STEM Club: High-Flying Hovercrafts finds us exploring these flying marvels.

We will be using basic items to see how high we can propel a paper plate into the air. Registration for this program begins Wednesday, March 17, which is the same day the video will be posted to YouTube. This is not a live video, so the program can be done on your own time. STEM Club: High-Flying Hovercrafts is recommended for ages 6-12, requires parental supervision, and is limited to 25 patrons.

Bee Crazy Buzz into the library on Wednesday, March 31 to register for Bee Crazy! Follow along to our YouTube video where we will listen to stories, sing and dance, and learn about the importance of these little flying insects.

Upon registration, patrons will receive a Take-and-Make bag with the supplies to create a “lifecycle of a bee” mini-book, complete with jumbo googly eyes and antennae. This program is recommended for ages 12 and under; some parental supervision may be required to complete the project.
