– OBITUARIES –
† ALLERDING Steven Richard Allerding
With great sadness, we share the passing of our husband, father, grandfather (Papa) and friend to so many. Steven Richard Allerding was born July 19, 1948 in Hastings, Michigan. He passed away on February 15, 2024 in his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
Steve graduated from Hastings High School in 1966. He attended Kellogg Community College until he joined the Air Force in 1967. In 1971, he married his love, Sue.
Steve, Sue and son, Joshua, moved to Ionia in 1977 where he managed the men’s clothing store, Clevelands. After taking ownership, the store’s name was changed to Country Gentlemen, spending years providing quality men’s wear, fitted business suits and special occasion tuxedos. Most importantly, he developed lasting friendships in the community he served. Steve had a passion for many activities in his lifetime. He played baseball for many of his younger years with a traveling team. When baseball was no longer an option, he taught himself tennis. The sport became a family joy and we spent many hours playing together over the years. He went on to coach both girls and boys varsity teams at Ionia High School for many years. Steve had a love of every season. He spent every winter out fishing on the ice, spring prepping his gardens and flower beds, summers in his boat fishing all of the local lakes or laying in the sun watching his grandchildren in the pool, and in the fall, he was out in his blind waiting for the next big buck.
Steven is survived by his wife, Suanne (Wellfare) Allerding, and children Joshua Allerding, Abbie Whorley (Ken Whorley), and Tim Allerding (Julie Allerding). He was blessed with grandchildren who called him Papa; Sophie and Isabella Whorley, Brayden, Xavier, Rhys, Liza and Simon Allerding, sister Tracy Allerding (Eric Gale), several nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Vivian Allerding and his premature babies, Tiffany and Timothy Allerding.
Cremation has taken place and the family will be hosting a Celebration of Life at Outreach Christian Church, 7831 N. Jordan Lake Road, Lake Odessa on February 25, 2024 at 3pm. Memorial contributions can be sent to Outreach Christian Church at 7831 N. Jordan Lake Rd. Lake Odessa MI 48849.
† GOODEMOOT Bernice (Bernie) Mae (Fredricks) Goodemoot, age 87, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at Trinity Health Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI, 8 days from celebrating her 88th birthday. Other than a short time in Thompsonville, MI after retirement, they resided in Lake Odessa, MI where they raised their four children.
Bernie’s door was always open and she could put together a meal for the multitudes with very little effort. Her home was “lived in” but always decorated beautifully, regardless of whether or not it was a special holiday. She also loved her flowers…..inside and outside. Her last “job” was working at Swift’s Flower Shop thoroughly enjoying every moment of being a florist and she continued to do wedding flowers after retirement. She is survived by her four children, Chery (Jim) Valentine, Kyle (Marilyn) Goodemoot, Jill Andreau and Doni (Randy Nurenberg); eight grandchildren, Alana (Tim Bergy) Valentine, Keith (Sara) Valentine, Lance (Kristen) Goodemoot, Emily (Andy) Spitzley, Stacy (Rob) Bryson, Eric (Andrea) Andreau, Jared (Libby) Nurenberg and Jack (Jordyn Werkema) Nurenberg; eighteen great grandchildren, Logan, Ella, Brady and Sadie Acheson; McKenna, Caroline and James Valentine; Case, Cole, Kinley and Corbin Goodemoot; Millie and Jake Spitzley; Bobby, Porter and Don Bryson; Jocelyn and Kosta Andreau. In an era where many children do not know their grandparents well she enjoyed a loving and vibrant relationship with all of her grandchildren AND great grandchildren. Bernie is also survived by her brother Roger Fredricks, sisters Marva (LaVerne) Kneale and Linda (Roger) Altena, as well as sistersin-law Marilyn Fredricks, Barb Fredricks and her treasured Yaya’s, sister-in-law Eunice Goodemoot and niece Becky Livermore. NOTHING got in the way of Wednesday’s with her Yaya’s! She is also survived by “bonus daughter” Dawne (Bill) Vowler and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Bernie was preceded in death by husband, Don Goodemoot, on October 28, 2015, and son-in-law, Rick Andreau, on October 27, 2019; her parents, Herb and Bertha Fredricks; siblings, Elaine (Jay) Wigger, Don Fredricks, Harvey (Darla) Fredricks, Sandy Fredricks, Keith Fredricks; parents-in-law, Don and Sadie Goodemoot; in-laws Francis (Ethel) Goodemoot, Marion (John) McDowell, Ford (Lorraine, Madeline) Goodemoot, Helen (Ray Livermore, Doc) Robinson, Mike (Lois) Goodemoot, Peg (Lyle) Faulkner and Rex Goodemoot.

With a hunger for exploration, Jim also ventured with Carol across the many waters of Michigan on their kayaks. From the smallest rivers to the greatest lakes, they paddled all around the mitten.
Jim was an excellent golfer and a patient teacher of the sport to his family as well. Renowned locally in his early years as a multi-sport athlete, Jim was an integral teammate on the football, basketball, and baseball teams. † HASKINS Lionel Lee Haskins Sr., age 82, of Saranac, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. The son of Harol and Volta “Tiny” (Poulson) Haskins. Lionel was born on June 6, 1941, in Grand Rapids, MI. He attended Saranac Community Schools, graduating with the Class of 1959. Following graduation he joined the Navy dedicating four years of his life, 1960 to 1964, to serving his country with pride.
On August 13, 1960, Lionel united in marriage with his beloved Jane Magee of Saranac. Together, they embarked on a 53-year journey that would see them raise five remarkable children. Lionel experienced the loss of his dear Jane on August 25, 2013, leaving behind a void that could never be filled. We know in our hearts their heavenly reunion was filled with joy.
Lionel was a methodical man of ingenuity and integrity. He established Saranac Builders where his expertise in construction led him to serve as the Building Inspector for Ionia County, later evolving into the Director of the Board of Public Works. Lionel’s entrepreneurial ventures continued with the inception of Haskins Construction, where he and his son, Tim, developed the Morrison Lake Condos. His legacy extended far beyond the realm of construction when he assumed the position of Ionia Free Fair Manager, overseeing many memorable years of community celebration and success. Assisted by his wife Jane, who had an incredible gift of hospitality and a heart to serve, they also launched Haskins Family Concessions.
Lionel never met a stranger. You knew you were loved if he blessed you with a nickname, the more nonsensical the better. Hugs, a listening ear, and support were freely given to all who were lucky enough to call him friend.
As a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church of Saranac, Lionel’s faith was an integral part of his life. He was also a proud member of the Saranac American Legion.
After Jane passed away, Lionel found unwavering companionship and support from Diane Suppes. Together, they shared life’s joys and challenges, enriching each other’s lives in immeasurable ways. Furthermore, heartfelt appreciation is extended to his grandson Ryan Thomas for his solid care and support.
Lionel’s legacy lives on through his devoted children: Lionel Haskins Jr. of Ionia, Mark (Gina) Haskins of Florida, Christine Haskins of Ionia, Timothy (Danielle) Haskins of Hudsonville, Theresa (Andy) Nurenberg of Saranac, and bonus son Jim “Pitty” Pittman of Saranac.
His memory also continues through a host of adoring grandchildren; Amber (Darrell) Whitmire, Corey (Danielle) Haskins, Alex Haskins, Hannah Haskins, Haley (Jay) Haskins, Cody Haskins, Kelsey (Tyler) Etheridge, Trevor Haskins, Martin (Ashlee) Lemke, Marcus (Katie) Lemke, Anthony Lemke, Matthew Haskins, Holly Haskins, Jake Haskins, Aric Haskins, Isla Haskins, Griffin Haskins, Ryan Thomas, Karlee (Andy) Thomas, Andrew (Gabrielle) Nurenberg and Ryleigh Nurenberg; 27 greatgrandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; Diane Suppes and her children, Dustin Suppes (Lindsey) with their children Lydia and Collin, and Darcy (Jeremy) Ingraham with their children Braeden Piggott and Owen, Rylie, Garrett, and Wyatt; and his sister Rosemary (Dan) Healy of Florida.
In Lionel’s passing, he joins his parents, wife Jane, brother Chuck and his loving wife Karen, grandson Matthew, and Derek Suppes in eternal peace. Friends and loved ones are invited to pay their respects during the visitation at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Friday, February 23rd, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
A funeral Mass honoring Lionel’s life will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Saranac on Saturday, February 24th, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Father Michael Goodwin. Following the service, all are welcome to join the family for a luncheon at Buzz (Sallie) Possehn’s place at 325 Johnson Rd, Saranac. Although neither of them would ever openly admit it, Lionel and Buzz have been lifelong best friends.
With a heart for those in need, Lionel wished for random acts of kindness to be performed in his memory in lieu of flowers or a formal donation. Online condolences and tributes may be shared at www.lakefuneralhomes.com, for friends and family to commemorate the life of this extraordinary man whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
