– OBITUARIES –
† CARIGON Glen R. Carigon, 91, of Ionia passed away February 18, 2019. Dad was born in Odessa Township, March 11, 1928, the son of Bert and Lillian (Weeks) Carigon and married his life-long sweetheart, Phyllis Andrews, on September 30, 1949. Dad and Mom celebrated their 65th anniversary just prior to her death in 2014. In 1946, he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Force serving with the 766th Bu 136th Sq. at Kindley Field, Bermuda where he maintained radio teletype and air to ground radio transmitters. At the time of his discharge on February 21, 1949 Dad had attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. After leaving the Army Air force, Dad came home and tried out several different occupations but found his niche as an electrician where he specialized as an electric meter technician. He spent several years working for Certified Meter Testing in Ionia before going into business for himself in the early 70’s. After retiring in 1990, Dad and Mom did a little traveling and spent many weekends at “the shack” fishing and playing cards with family and friends. Dad was a life member of the American Legion Saranac Post 175; the Moose Lodge 998 in Ionia, participating in several of their annual Euchre Tournaments (placing first and second many times!); as well as a member of the Easton United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Phyllis; sons Michael and Kevin; and siblings, Elsie, Irene, Neil and Frances. Dad is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Grant) Blood, Pamela (Gary) Erridge, both of Ionia. Five grandchildren Paul (Traci) Carigon and Mark (Cora) Carigon of Atlanta, MI; Amanda (Mike) Bitson of Byron Center, MI; Chad (Trisha) Erridge of Ionia; and Jennifer (Aaron) Little of Ithaca, MI; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister Velma Kernen of Ionia and several nieces and nephews. Dad’s memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 A.M., February 22, 2020 at the Easton United Methodist Church with Pastor Donna Sperry officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers those wishing may make memorial contributions to the - Easton United Methodist Church. Joel was born on June 26, 1966 to Hugh and Virginia O’Donnell in Ionia. He loved his music and playing the drums. He enjoyed fishing and watching the Pittsburg Steelers. He was also known to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He loved animals dearly, especially dogs. He recently went back to the God of his youth, Jehovah. Joel is survived by his siblings, Carol (George) Meyers of Ionia, Terrie (Doug) Trann of Belding, Bill (Kaye) O’Donnell of Hubbardston, Linda (Randy) Sherman of Tennessee and Dan O’Donnell of Ionia; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews, two cousins and special niece Brady. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Mike O’Donnell and Brian O’Donnell. A Funeral will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in Ionia with Mr. Dallas Houghton officiating. When they are processed in the precinct, election workers typically feed absentee ballots into the voting machines during lulls or after polls close. By contrast, AV counting boards focus solely on processing absentee ballots all day long. While AV counting boards are allowed under current law, communities can only complete the process on their own. Calley’s proposal, House Bill 5141,
would allow local governments to team up with other nearby communities or the county to establish an AV counting board. “Some of our smaller communities may not have the workforce or equipment they need to establish their own AV counting board,” Calley said. “This will allow them to pool resources with others so they can process absentee ballots in a more efficient manner.”
